STUPID MEDIC WON'T HEAL!!!! by wombatidaein smnc

[–]BeardNoir 8 points9 points ago

Combat Girl is an offensive character, so I never really expect much in the healing department. The only thing that irks me is when a match starts and your teams CG won't armor up anyone.

BSOD After Clearing CMOS by BeardNoirin techsupport

Thank you, so simple that I kind of feel like an idiot for not thinking of that.

After some additional digging around, I found a Tom's Hardware article where someone had seemingly the same issue with a similar setup. Looks like it may have switched back to IDE on me as well.

Kinda wish I had taken more time to research the issue before reformatting, but maybe others can benefit from this.

[Savage Worlds] Question on skill rolls by kieranthethoamsin rpg

You will also find situations where a roll will use just an attribute die (and your wild die), example: performing tricks in combat which uses either Agility or Smarts depending on the tricks.

Has anyone been afraid to write their novel? by boxmanboxmanin writing

[–]BeardNoir 3 points4 points ago

Cormac McCarthy gave an interview with The Wall Street Journal where he said rather tersely, "Anything that doesn't take years of your life and drive you to suicide hardly seems worth doing."

Or we could look for inspiration in Stephen King from his book On Writing where he said, "You can approach the act of writing with nervousness, excitement, hopefulness, or even despair - the sense that you can never completely put on the page what's in your mind and heart. You can come to the act with your fists clenched and your eyes narrowed, ready to kick ass and take down names... Come to it any way but lightly. Let me say it again: you must not come lightly to the blank page."

Hemingway put it simply, "There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed."

I could drone on, and cite example after example, some more rosy than others. You have to write your own words. You have to transcribe them from your mind to the page or the screen or they will not be born and having not been born, they will never exist.

Where do you go from here? You go to the page and write.

I am Robert Briscoe, the artist behind indie game Dear Esther AMA by RobertBriscoein IAmA

[–]BeardNoir 0 points1 point ago

The atmosphere in Dear Esther was remarkable. I recall that I was reading For Whom The Bell Tolls around the same time that I played it and wishing that there could be a translation in medium and emotion that went into your game. Very noticeably a labor of love.

What are some of the more memorable things that you have pulled design inspiration from?

Anyone interested in an AMA with the Dev's of Dear Esther? by RobertBriscoein truegaming

I would love to see that. Dear Esther is one of the best examples that can argue games are a form of art. The atmosphere was simply perfect.

"I am Jane Jensen, creator of Gabriel Knight, Gray Matter and Pinkerton Road game studio. Ask me anything." by JaneJensenin IAmA

[–]BeardNoir 6 points7 points ago

First and foremost, Jane and Robert, thank you very much for doing this AMA. I grew up during the era of Sierra On-Line's adventure game series and Gabriel Knight is a definite gem in that crown. A couple of questions that I have:

  1. Besides Gabriel Knight and Leisure Suit Larry, what Sierra titles would be excited to see brought back from the dead?

  2. Kickstarter seems to be breathing life back into a niche market that had previously fallen by the wayside. What do you feel will be the most difficult hurdle/greatest concession that you need to make in this project in comparison to what you faced during the 90s?

  3. What was the last book you read and what are you currently reading/planning to start reading.

Thanks again and best wishes with this project!

IWTL how to smell better (all-around) and/or pick a good cologne by In_the_limelightin IWantToLearn

[–]BeardNoir 9 points10 points ago

Make sure your shower is a through process, get a washcloth or loofah and scrub yourself down well with soap or body wash. After drying off apply some deodorant.

Your clothing should be clean, it should be (hopefully) obvious, but undershirts, underwear, and socks get one use between washes. Pants can get a few uses as long as you're not sweating or spilling anything on them.

You mention that you brush your teeth daily, ideally this should be 2-3 times a day and flossing is a must. Bits of food can get stuck between your teeth and will smell horrible once they start to decay. I find that a better gauge of how your breath smells than licking your wrist is to ask a friend who will be honest with you. Schedule an appointment with your dentist, you'll feel better for it.

Cologne largely comes down to personal preference, what smells good on one person is not necessarily going to smell good on another, test samples and try something that you think will work for you, but remember, a little goes a long way. I'm of the school of thought that cologne should be used when going out with friends, for the workplace you should aim for more of a neutral smell with your deodorant doing the work (no one likes a coworker that imposes their cologne or perfume on someone). I'd also suggest you ditch the Axe spray, but that's personal opinion.

Lastly, if you are outdoors, do a lot of moving, or find that you work up a bad sweat during the day, some Gold Bond Medicated Powder on your crotch can work wonders and make you feel great.

what I usually do, most commonly when a character that I don't remember gets mentioned, is search.

This is why I really like having the keyboard on mine as I often find myself saying, "Wait, who is that?"

GCCIS Penny Wars: Monday - Wednesday of Week 9! by sg_gccisin rit

[–]BeardNoir 5 points6 points ago

I'd like to throw my two pennies in the hat, so to speak, and I hope that it doesn't put anyone further on the defensive then they currently feel that they need to be.

First and foremost, I would like to commend GCCIS for working to strengthen community spirit towards a philanthropic goal, charity is always a noble endeavor.

That being said, I am part of an organization that has run an annual Penny Wars event on campus for (to the best of my knowledge) four or more years. The individuals that organize and run the event dedicate an admirable amount of time and effort to this cause; for them it has been a labor of love and their hard work and the support of the RIT community has raised thousands of dollars for charity. They have a right to be proud of their accomplishments. It would seem that some people perceive the GCCIS Penny Wars as a co-opt of that event's success. College students work with limited budgets and when they make the decision to donate part of their funds to a charitable cause we should be grateful but also recognize the risk of 'charity fatigue', excessive exposure to the same kind of events runs the risk of people becoming disinterested in that event. Does that mean that one group should have a stranglehold on one method of fund raising? Of course not, but it does encourage other organizations to be creative in their planning, rather than piggybacking on the success of others.

I wish GCCIS the best of luck going forward, thank you for being active participants in the RIT community.

I really wish I had a clear cut, step by step guide that I could offer. What it comes down to is, you have to want it.

I'd tried nicotine patches and nicotine gum, Welbutrin, exercising, and Easyway by Allen Carr (which, admittedly, I did not get that far into). The only thing that worked for me was being ready to quit, that one day where I just said, "I'm done." I think that if you go into it with the mindset of, "Well, let me just treat myself to the rest of this pack and then I'll quit," then you're not ready. You have to be honest with yourself, you have to say, "Goddammit, I'm not going to smoke another cigarette for the rest of my life and if I have to throw away this entire carton and all of my lighters then so the fuck be it."
