TROPHY CASE

Nine years old, still works great. by passimin apple

[–]BarackObamazing 0 points1 point ago

This was my favorite model because it was my first iPod. Before I got it, I had no idea that I could actually own such a great device. It revolutionized my life, as I was able to stop carrying around dozens of CDs and a bulky discman. I'll love that iPod till the day I die, and will haunt the asshole who stole it after I'm gone.

Hey women of reddit, let's talk pornography. by THECUNTHAMMERin sex

anything particularly vulgar I shriek and cover my eyes or the screen.

You know you're talking about pornography, right? It's vulgar by definition.

I'm such a girl.

You don't have to characterize all girls as puritans just because you're a prude.

Ask yourself, how does the FBI get involved with a few guys who maybe had some plans to hurt a lot of people? The FBI got involved because these guys told someone of their plans, or because they tried to buy explosives to carry the plan out. If someone told you about their plot to kill innocent people, wouldn't you tell the FBI? Aren't you thankful that these jackoffs were found out before they could kill a bunch of people?

These guys repeatedly tried to detonate what they thought were explosives on a bridge full of innocent people. Fuck them. They've done enormous and irreparable damage to your movement. And you're all falling over yourselves to justify their actions. You oughta be angry at them, not at the FBI for saving some lives.

Thoughts on a New Political Party? by ReformRealistin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]BarackObamazing 0 points1 point ago

Madison and Jefferson were both fiercely against the notion of 'party' altogether.

Jefferson and Madison were the co-founders of the Democratic-Republican Party, which was formed to oppose Alexander Hamilton's Federalist Party.

This is why the runner-up in each election was originally given the post of Vice President.

Constitution's original electoral college scheme was adopted to prevent electors from casting their ballots for their states' favorite sons, and it was a disaster.

Thomas Jefferson was elected Vice President in 1796 by accident because of complicated partisan schemes that resulted from the system, which gave 2 votes to each elector. The Federalists meant to elect Adams President and Thomas Pinckney VP, but Jefferson snuck in because the Federalists messed up their electoral math, and because Alexander Hamilton tried to screw Adams out of the Presidency by lobbying Southern electors to withhold their votes from him.

In 1800, Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans won the popular vote, and this time they accidentally allowed Jefferson and his running mate Aaron Burr to tie in the electoral college. In a tie, the House of Representatives choose the President, and in 1800 it took 36 votes (again filled with insanely partisan bickering and meddling from Hamilton) before Jefferson was elected.

They wanted many diverse perspectives brought to the House and especially the Senate, not pre-established blocs of predictable votes on every issue.

They wanted to win, just like today's politicians. And it takes a highly organized political machine to win.

In a Suit. Who am I? by Ellipsisin firstimpression

Don't take this the wrong way, but with your attitude, you'd go nowhere in politics. Humility is a prerequisite when dealing with voters and activists, and your comment reeks of arrogance and self-aggrandizement. If you think that it's easy to "get the general public to bow to [your] will," you have a lot to learn about both human interaction and political discourse.

Out of curiosity, hypothetically speaking if no one in the country voted in Nov., what would happen? by Khellendosin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]BarackObamazing 0 points1 point ago

They'd still have a police and military apparatus at their disposal, not to mention plenty of cash and credit. I think they'd do alright even if they were popularly seen as illegitimate domestically. Regardless, it won't matter because the American government is legitimate and is kept in line because people can vote. No one will snatch the right to participate in government away from the American people.

Are you kidding? They'd be thrilled. With no voters, they could finally all do what they wanted with no consequences.

I stopped taking OWS seriously when I talked to some people at a protest and they ended up shouting at me for as long as I could bear about how Obama is as bad as Hitler, the US is totally Nazi Germany, and I'm just as bad because I'm voting for him.

I've always thought the PC guy is supposed to be the audience personified. Kind, earnest, likable - but always having trouble with poorly executed technology. The Mac guy never insults PC guy, but instead explains to him that there's another way. PC users are PC guy, and Mac guy just wants to help them have a better computing experience.

What's the best shot you've ever taken with a point-and-shoot? by kymaksin photography

[–]BarackObamazing -2 points-1 points ago

Sorry for blatantly piggybacking off the top comment here, but I wanted people to actually see my picture. I took this shot of the guitarist from My Morning Jacket at the High Sierra Music Festival a few years back. It could have been framed better, but the lighting really makes it for me. I shot with a long exposure and no flash, but someone else's flash went off while the shutter was open. Taken with my sister's old point and shoot, I have no idea of the make and model.

My high school journalism teacher (Mr. H.) was diagnosed with terminal, inoperable lung cancer and given 6 months to live just before I began my freshman year of high school. But he responded astonishingly well to treatment, although chemo destroyed his quality of life. Even when he was undergoing intensive treatment, Mr. H. would leave the infusion center and come straight to the school to teach his students to conduct interviews, write articles, shoot photos, etc. During our monthly deadline weeks, he supervised the newspaper staff sometimes 12 hours a day through the weekend to make sure we turned out a product we could be proud of.

Mr. H. was my journalism instructor for all 4 years of high school during which time he taught me about everything from typography to questioning/respecting authority as appropriate. His class was the only reason I bothered to go to school. I'd never felt more honored than before graduating, when he pulled strings to get me into a journalism student honor society (despite my poor grades in other classes that technically disqualified me), and post-graduation when he asked me help his new students learn to use their cameras and computers.

He died in November of my freshman year of college. The last time I saw him was a couple weeks before, when I gave him a photo-collage print I made for him using every photo that ran in the newspaper during my time on staff. His funeral was standing-room-only in my town's biggest church. In the 4 years since Mr. H. died I haven't gone a day without thinking about him, wondering if he'd approve of where I'm going with my life. I know I'll die happy if I can ever make the kind of impact on just one or two people that Mr. H. made on hundreds of students like me during his many years as an educator.

Male Privilege. by mynistin MensRights

About 70m people were killed on WWII. Around 25m were military deaths, and the rest were civilians. I can't find a breakdown of deaths by sex. When most killed were civilians, how can you be sure that most casualties were male?
