Didn't TFC have a bitter/controversial match with Montreal as well? I remember something about people throwing chairs?

Cool info on MLS kit sponsors by mbones14in MLS

I'm curious on some of these numbers. He listed sources but not with any links. I'm pretty sure that Alaska Airlines and the Portland Timbers never released the details of the deal, as in a dollar amount.

Not sure where that $3 million amount came from, but I'd love to see the exact source.

Toronto FC Fans & Ownership At Odds by BanksKnowsBestin MLS

[–]BacteriaEP 0 points1 point ago

I didn't say it followed the article...

My guess pretty much sums it up and I still think it holds true. Toronto had little to no assurances that it would be a success by virtue of fans in the seats and, as we know now, MLS requires that from it's new expansion teams. Hence, my guess is that they wouldn't be granted one were it the case today. MLSE would have to do more to prove that they could support one.

Don't get me wrong, Toronto does indeed deserve a team. The fan support has absolutely shown that, but there just wasn't anything to back in up in 2006, at least not according to said article.

KATU just gives up journalism altogether by harmalain Portland

[–]BacteriaEP 2 points3 points ago

The people behind the survey conceded that the information gathered was limited because most gang activity is not documented consistently.

Officials with a number of the law enforcement agencies cited in the survey, including the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and the Milwaukie Police Department, said gang crime is a concern, but they do not have specific crime data to back up the survey's findings.

But Milwaukie resident Zach Adams said he doesn’t need the statistics to know things have changed. He rides the Green line to work every day.

"It seems like since the Green line started a lot more trouble has come out this direction from Portland," he said. "Clackamas used to be a nicer place and now it's a lot of graffiti and more fights out here than there used to be."

Hmm yes. Seems entirely scientific. With a headline like "Gangs and crime ride into town on MAX, survey finds" you'd expect the article to have actual, factual numbers not a pile of bullshit to ride in on.

Pull your head out of your ass KATU.

Honestly, this is the best explanation for TFC's forever struggles that I've ever heard or read.

When I hear TFC fans complaining about MLSE, it will be with a renewed sense of understanding. My guess is that MLSE was only granted a team now because MLS was desperate at the time and needed the money/publicity of an expansion. My guess is that MLSE would absolutely not be given a team today without a seriously altered conviction.

I feel for you TFC fans.

Shoutout to Portland from a Seattle paper by tiff_seattlein Portland

[–]BacteriaEP 1 point2 points ago

Ummm... what metrics are used by this newspaper and what is considered "urban" and not urban? I mean both Vancouver and Seattle technically have more people living in their core cities so, by that fact, shouldn't both be considered more urban?

Our DP: We're setting the record of the worst team in the world by martin519in MLS

What else could they be doing?

I'm not super knowledgeable about TFC, but I know they have 3 DPs, they've expanded the stadium, and they hired a coach who seemingly knew about the Ajax system well.

Yeah I saw the third one for Vita, but I figured it would probably make more sense to start from the beginning.

Also it's a little more than I really want to spend anyways.

I have all three Timbers jerseys:

  1. Green home (authentic)
  2. Rose City Red (authentic)
  3. Limited Edition (74/2000) Portland-made Retro kit (authentic)

Ahhhhh yeah!

I would get them signed if I could, but I'm not allowed to.

Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) has suspended operations permanently & is dissolving the league. by cedricisawesomein MLS

[–]BacteriaEP 6 points7 points ago

Sad, but I think this had to happen. WPS wasn't sustainable in it's current form. We already knew that.

I think in the future the hope should be that teams like the Whitecaps, and Sounders women's teams or something like what we saw happen with the Portland Timbers and the Portland Rain will be the future of the women's game here in the United States.

I know I plan on supporting the Rain both as a fan and as somebody in the media.

The kids who burnt down the high school in Woodburn say that it was the teacher's fault - she wasn't paying attention to them. No... really. They said that. by doctor_jeffin Portland

[–]BacteriaEP 2 points3 points ago

I thought it was mentioned in the article that these kids were imitating other kids involved in the same stunt.

Don't get me wrong... they're stupid. And no you might not have set a school on fire, or played with fire when you were younger (plenty have though).

But the simple fact of it is that these three kids will be tried as adults. They'll likely be convicted. Then they'll go to prison for a few years which we'll all pay for because that stuff isn't free or cheap. The school/state will still have to pay to rebuild the school. And in the end they'll likely turn into habitual criminals because prisons don't rehabilitate people nearly as often as train them for future crimes, especially since those same people can often not find any work upon release.

Again, this isn't justice. From what I can gather, these kids didn't have a plan to set the school on fire. There wasn't anything about this event that leads me to believe this was their goal.

It was a stupid stunt, compounded by stupid teenage boys, multiplied by the use of fire.

I'm not saying let them go scot-free. Probation... make them/parents pay for the damages... etc. But prison is not the answer and trying them as adults is simply unfair unless there is a huge amount of information that has yet to be released about some plot with intent.

[–]BacteriaEP 1 point2 points ago

I don't know these kids and there could be something I'm missing, but I'm assuming that these kids didn't have the knowable desire to cause injury, harm or suffering of the school. It was just a stupid stunt they saw on YouTube, according to the article. No malice...

I did plenty of really stupid things when I was between the ages of 13-18. I happened to have been lucky enough to not cause permanent damage to myself or another, but even if I had I would have at least liked to know that my actions weren't out of malice, but rather stupid teenage bravado that we all suffer from at that ages.

[–]BacteriaEP 4 points5 points ago

Prison for what was clearly a stupid prank/stunt? Yeah this might seem like justice for some, but the reality is that we, the tax-payers, are going to pay a buttload for another needless imprisonment.

  • Fine the kids and the parents to help repay the costs.
  • Put them on probation or maybe, if it's really goddamn necessary, put em in juvi for a few months.
  • Move on.

I don't have the whole story, but it honestly doesn't sound malicious in any way and trying them as adults seems like overkill that we'll all pay for.

Hey r/Portland: Who are you voting for in the mayoral race and why? by thedomilamain Portland

Seriously? Again?

Please start telling people that this is a biased site when linking to them. It's disingenuous to suggest it as "useful for quickly looking up issues" when it clearly has an agenda.

We don't need more ads for the mayoral race.

Fact-checking the mayor race by ImHighCurrentlyin Portland

A biased source.

While it's nice and easy to read, as the site itself says there's a position here being represented and the candidates are rated based on that.

That said, the money portion is quite nice.

Way to name your new Wednesday night drama, NBC. by RemyDWDin MLS

I could be. I don't know the specific issues with this trademark. In fact, I'm pretty sure this is a non-issue.

Also I'm not a lawyer, just somebody who has had experience working with patents and trademarks. For a better answer to this specific question we'd probably need to ask a lawyer.

Way to name your new Wednesday night drama, NBC. by RemyDWDin MLS

[–]BacteriaEP 10 points11 points ago

No. At least not unless the Chicago Fire were making movies, TV, or other entertainment products like that. Sports and Movies are under two different categories under the USPTO and, as such, two different companies can hold the trademarks for each.

Also, a company has to prove they are going to use it within the realm of their trademark. So, for example, when the Chicago Fire filed for their trademark they had to prove they were actually going to use and be a soccer team (or other sports team, I don't think it's delineated by sport). This makes it so a company can't just trademark the name under everything available. So even if the Chicago Fire wanted to have a universal trademark they would be ineligible unless they went out and created a movie or show called that.

The one grey area, and I'm pretty sure it's not, but since MLS technically owns everything and they do create some films I could see an argument raises as such... but it's a very long shot.

In the end, it's really just unfortunate that this happened, but then again the Chicago fire was a pivotal moment in Chicago's history so I'm not surprised another company wants to use the moniker.

Game Showdown: Skyrim or Kingdoms of Amalur? Which is better? by BacteriaEPin Games

[–]BacteriaEP[S] 1 point2 points ago

Interesting note about KoA's combat. I actually found it to be far more enjoyable than Skyrim's which really just felt like I was blocking and then taking a swing every now and then. In KoA I was dodging, blocking, and using combo moves all the time. Also loved that I could have two weapons equipped at once to make it easy to switch. Long sword + Chakram combo was pretty fun.

One thing about KoA's world that I enjoyed immensely more than Skyrim was the colors and variety of landscapes. Skyrim was beautiful, no doubt and much more graphically impressive. But the landscape got old after a little while and, at a certain point, I felt like I wasn't exploring anymore, even if I had never been there.
