Will I ever find Vegan love? by SkankFactoryin vegan

[–]BabbageFeynman 2 points3 points ago

Vegan love is the tastiest!

I'm very lucky to have met my vegan sweetie. (Disclaimer: I am vegetarian) She's also an amazing cook too!! Before I met her, I was sad and depressed thinking I could never find a girl with my same feelings about eating animal remains along with all the other things I look for in a girl.

I find the smell of meat disgusting, and having that in my house is unacceptable.

The nice thing about veg*nism is that usually the people you meet who are veg*n share a lot of same values. Once you open the proverbial conversation door with food, you can move on to other topics very easily on a veg*n date.

If you are still stuck, I suggest going to some yoga classes, busy vegan restaurants or other places that are veg*n friendly.

Also, if you are done your university, it helps to live in a big vegan-friendly city. (I'm in Toronto with 3 vegan eating places in a 500 meter radius of my home... More like 5 or 6 in a 2km radius!)

Lastly, as men, we have it easy!! The M:F ratio for vegans kicks butt. Also, veg*n girls are hotter.

Conventional Keynesian Economics is that you want to spend your way out of a recession. Most Canadian governments have followed this philosophy in recent time. (Though some argue that Harper isn't a Keynesian)

Cruelty Free Baking Soda - Boycott Arm & Hammer, Buy Bob’s Red Mill (link) by MrWinksin vegan

[–]BabbageFeynman 8 points9 points ago

Disclaimer: I hope to be a good medical-devices engineer one day, and probably don't know much about cosmetics. Also, Regulatory rules are not my bread & butter. I'm still learning though!!

I do know this: engineers hate resorting to testing like this because it's expensive and time-consuming. There is a strong financial incentive to avoid it.

If Arm & Hammer is advertising their baking soda's use as a cosmetic product they may be required to do these tests.

If they've added something (even if it's natural) to the baking soda, then they may be required to do the test to substantiate safety. (Just once)

If they cannot guarantee that they haven't accidentally something in their production line, (And proving this is sometimes harder than you think!) then they may be required to test a sample on a rabbit once in a while. Sometimes it's impossible to prove that there are no additives.

If you decide to use Bob's Red Mill Baking soda for cosmetic use, then be aware that since they do not advertise its use as such, you are exposing yourself to some risks.

If you don't like animal testing, write to regulatory bodies to consider modifying what is acceptable as "state of the art" for cosmetics. That will probably go further than boycotting a company that may have been (or may not have been) forced into doing animal testing. Companies can only be expected to follow their guidelines. The FDA already encourages companies to reduce their use of animals, and the "state of the art" is also improving.

Why you will fail to have a great career by mylonsin ted

I had him for a professor in university.

I've never had a more charismatic professor who manages to keep the full attention of the class for 3 hours straight. His lectures on economics are masterpieces.

If you are ever in Waterloo, drop by one of his lectures if you can. You won't regret it.

Also, he has great quotes! http://blog.mattgoyer.com/stories/2002/02/18/larrySmithLingo.html

Actually, not quite.

They encrypt the communications between your computer and theirs with the same security as your bank, but the similarities may end there. Their facility may not have the same security. Drives may not be encrypted.

They aren't audited to the same level.

It's a circular stone that takes the radiated heat from the stove element and transfers it to the dough by conduction.

It makes the pizza crust crispy on the bottom, while letting the rest of it be fluffy in a delicious way.

I let the pizza stone get really hot, cook the pizza as usual for a bit, then turn on the "broil" so that the toppings get cooked better. I leave the stuff that needs less cooking on the lower levels, (kidney beans, veggie pepperoni, canned sundried veggies and peppers, etc) and stuff that needs more cooking on top. (Like mushrooms, broccoli, eggplant)

Vegan pizzas are really under-rated! Daiya kicks butt.

I use a pizza stone on mine and Yves veggie pepperoni. Add some green chillis, eggplant, sundried tomatoes, and whatever else. I like using a combination of all-purpose flour, honey, whole wheat flour and buckwheat flour.

Also, I can't recommend a pizza stone enough.

Discussion: the Four Tigers, Japan, Russia, India--what do you guys think about unifying currency like EU? What does India need to do in order to improve their economy? What does Korea need to do to reach closer to Japan's economy? by jinnyjuicein Economics

[–]BabbageFeynman 0 points1 point ago

It sounds like you've described Manmohan Singh. (India's current PM and also an economist by background) He led the effort on many economic liberalization efforts in the past and he can claim a good amount of credit for the successes India has had in recent time. Though nowadays, he's gotten stuck with the nature of politics, and has had trouble making decisions.

WRT currency, It's not just trade, but their boom-bust cycles and how their economies respond to the instruments that central bankers have at their disposal (ie: monetary valuation, and interest rates) For example, I'd expect Japanese people who are die-hard savers to respond differently to changes in interest rates. Also, China seems to love their currency manipulation.

I'm an Indian and pretend to know things about economics while seated comfortably in a chair and having only taken ECON 101.

To accurately evaluate India, one needs to come up with reliable statistics about the economy. This really hard since not all economic activity is captured in India. For example, like Greece, almost all large cash transactions have a "Black" money component. Also, there is a great deal of trade that is unmeasured, or difficult to measure.

To grow, India needs to bring down barriers to trade, and for foreign companies to lay down roots. The interfaces between businesses are also weak, causing large companies to unnecessarily vertically integrate. (For example, supply chain, and production of materials)

Why let in foreign companies? Because they are good at challenging inefficient practices, and will (hopefully!) spur on innovation. For example, in getting produce to your door, there are many middlemen involved, and this means a lot of produce gets wasted because it goes bad with the changing hands. (Also inconsistent quality) It takes a lot of capital to challenge a complex supply chain (like the farmers market) to improve to make deliveries on a consistent schedule and with a consistent quality.

Also, there's corruption. Widespread corruption creates all sorts of variables. It creates political uncertainty, it means distrust between investors, customers, and suppliers, and unions. The mafia gets their hands in everything and controls many businesses entirely. People make good use of the mafia to control supply chain, and labour. (Sometimes the unions use them, sometimes businesses use them)

The corruption part scares me. When one has corrupt people trying to game a capitalist system, they can quite easily succeed. This could possibly create mighty economic crashes.

Working in India's favour, Pakistan is too occupied with its own problems to create an all-out war at the moment. However, in the long run, India needs to sort out harmonious relationships with all its neighbors to be prosperous. (China too!)

Would I put my cash in India? I'm not sure. I haven't done enough research yet.

Unifying currencies in the EU, was a gradual thing. The countries were so intertwined with trade, that they needed to peg their currencies against each other, and the Euro was the next logical step. The hope with the Euro was that the central bank could make policy decisions to guide monetary policy for the entirety of its member countries.

Unifying a currency with the tigers you describe would be especially difficult because one could not come up with decisions regarding monetary policy that would suit those countries all at the same time.

TLDR: India needs to reduce economic waste, barriers to entry, and sources of business risk. Unifying currency with all of those countries would be like having one steering wheel for 4 cars with different destinations.

I have the same problem as your roomate.

The front-door thing gets better after a few weeks of living in the place.

As for the stove, I still make that error. I've learned that my element makes a certain creaking sound, and that helps me remember. It definitely helps to cook with nobody else in the kitchen.
