I hallucinate nearly constantly, didn't know I hallucinate people until recently, and have no health care. What shall I do? by AsdfMonkeyLarkin AskReddit

When I first realized I had serious problems (which was fairly recently btw) I did try to test people somewhat, but at this point I already just don't care unless there is something noticeably weird happening or people are looking at me like I'm a freak. I mean... there really isn't anything I know of to cease the hallucinations, so I kind of just accept it and act normal.

I was much more confused than scared to be honest.

I thought I had met the hallucinated person earlier in the day and that they entered the diner with me. When I hallucinate people, they don't just randomly appear out of some mystical portal or something... I meet my hallucinations the same way I meet anyone else. It's not comforting.

There are several recurring people in my hallucinations, but new or old hallucinations don't just suddenly appear out of nothing or behave oddly (in the majority of circumstances anyway). Basically, as far as I know, pretty much anyone at any time I encounter could be a hallucination (other than people I know to be real). There are people everywhere on Earth, how the hell am I supposed to know if they are real or not? That's the main reason I want to seek help. It's ridiculously strange.

Unfortunately, there isn't any one thing/way that will allow me to identify whether a person is real or a hallucination. If it's a person I recognize in which I've previously hallucinated, then I of course assume I'm hallucinating. Otherwise, there isn't any single thing that can allow me to quickly determine if I'm hallucinating or not. Honestly, almost every time I've realized I'm hallucinating a person it's been due to something different.

It's very real feeling. I don't ever really feel like I'm in a "dream-like state" other than when I actually dream. As far as interaction goes, I have interacted with my hallucinations as if they were real (i.e a hand shake and a conversation).

I might do this tomorrow if I don't have any obligations to attend to.

It's honestly hard to recall the reactions of people before I had realized that I may be hallucinating. It was't in my mind until recently that I should pay attention to peoples reactions for the purpose of determining if I am seeing things.

I do although have several distinct memories where I did get odd looks and people asking me odd questions in which I didn't recognize as being related to anything wrong with me. My head hurts thinking about it.

I'm more concerned about the potential of doing something totally unforeseen/unexpected to harm myself or others in the future as a result of hallucinating. I mean... what happens if I go untreated and my hallucinations become worse and ridiculous things happen?

The exact moment I became suspicious is when a waitress serving me at a dinner acted like I was behaving very strangely (I was speaking to a person in my booth that wasn't actually there). She sat down in the booth at one point, and exactly where the imaginary person I thought was there was. A split moment later, the imaginary person in my booth was outside the dinner window looking at me.

As far as before that, I had no idea the people I hallucinated were hallucinations. They appeared to me to be and act exactly like anyone else.

Just up and go to the ER eh? I realize that I'm probably crazy, but I think I'm still sane enough to realize that going to the ER without health insurance IS DEFINITELY insane! I honestly don't know if owing tens of thousands of dollars to a hospital is in my best interest, though if you know of any way to be seen by a medical professional who can help me without having to owe absurd amounts of money, it would be greatly appreciated.

Not since I've realized that they are hallucinations.

After several events in which I spoke to people who were not actually there while in the presence of actual existing people I began to realize the depth of my hallucinations. My realizations progressed from that point forward essentially.

I used drugs (though not many times) in my early twenties which includes marijuana, percocet, and LSD. Drugs weren't a big part of my life, and I would doubt any of my problems have a basis in said drugs.

I don't particularly experience "significant mood changes" to any frequent degree, although I do occasionally feel unusually happy for no apparent reason.

Lastly, I don't really have anyone to talk to about this that would know what to do about it any more than I do.
