Great running snack: Roasted Red Pepper and Tofu Dip w/ Chips [VEG] [CHEAP] [QUICK] by Arkaicin runmeals

[–]Arkaic[S] 1 point2 points ago

This is -super- easy and cheap to make, and makes for a great source of carbs + protein. I have a few alterations that I think adds to to the flavor:

  • Garlic Powder
  • Red Chile Pepper, maybe a bit of Cayenne Pepper
  • Hot Sauce

I'm still playing around with the recipe, but I find that adding a few spices here and there can really liven it up. I also think cheese could work pretty well...

True. In the sidebar, there's labels for [LOW CARB] as well as [KETO], so such low-carb recipes are more than welcome.

I, on the other hand, live and breathe carbs, so r/fitmeals wasn't doing much for me.

You should submit them! Not everyone goes to Runner's World (or has seen every recipe), so a lot of people may be missing out :p

What are the positives to running twice a day? by Trail__Runnerin running

[–]Arkaic 9 points10 points ago

Doubles wouldn't make sense for long-runs; a long run is supposed to help you handle running continuously for long distances, so breaking them into a double would defeat the purpose :)

I think, given your weekly mileage, you should stick to a long-run once a week and hold-off on doubles until your easy days are high enough, mileage-wise, to necessitate them. Doubles are a way to add easy, recovery miles to your training, but not as a replacement for workouts. Running a double that's as long or longer than your long-run would be much less useful then putting in more miles to your long-run. That being said, its your training, so if you feel like running twice a day, go for it. Just be mindful of your weekly mileage, rest when you feel you need it, and don't skip out on the long-runs!

What are the positives to running twice a day? by Trail__Runnerin running

[–]Arkaic 11 points12 points ago

Doubles are actually beneficial for your easy miles because it gives your legs more time to rest while still getting in a good amount of distance. Typically though doubles make more sense when you're running, say, 8+ miles a day. Breaking a 5 mile run into 2 and 3 mile runs would be sort of redunant, as you wouldn't really be running far enough with 2/3 mile sessions to make the split worthwhile.

If you have the mileage to warrant doubles for your easy runs, go for it!

R/running, tell me about your diet. by rabid_holein running

I don't have any direct sources at the moment, but I believe that chocolate-milk primes your liver for converting carbs to glycogen, which is exactly what you want after you've been running.

Plus, after a good run, it tastes like sweet ambrosia of the gods coursing through your body.

R/running, tell me about your diet. by rabid_holein running

[–]Arkaic 2 points3 points ago

Here's a rough outline of my daily diet (currently running at ~40mpw, building to 70+)

Pre-Morning Run: Banana! It's all I need.

Post-Run Breakfast: Chocolate Milk and whole-grain cereal or oatmeal

Morning snack: An orange and trail-mix, sometimes a bagel

Lunch: Usually stir-fry or pasta; lots of veggies!

Afternoon snack: More trail-mix.

Dinner: I usually get more creative for dinner, so I can't really give a typical meal.

Before bed: PB & Jelly or Tofu Burritos

I expect to add a sort of mini-dinner in the afternoon as my mileage increases, which will probably just be more stir-fry or pasta. Sadly, the higher in mileage you go, the more utilitarian you tend to get in your eating, and it can start to feel like a job or chore.

Trail-mix makes for a fantastic (and cost-effective) way to tide you over between meals throughout the day (though they can be pretty high in calories, if you're concerned about weight at all). The best thing I've done is taking advantage of frozen veggies; it makes life much easier when you can just cook up a pot of rice or pasta and throw veggies and what have you in there, rather than having to go all out on cooking full meals. And look into Tofu; it's a versatile, healthy (and cheap!) way to add protein to a carb-heavy diet.

STREET ART TOURS ARE GAY by yomaneein Graffiti

[–]Arkaic 3 points4 points ago

What if you're visiting a new city and just want to see some cool street art while you're there? Not everyone wants to scour the internet for good spots, nor does everyone have the time/resources to explore on their own.

Get off your high horse and let people enjoy street art. Your means of appreciation is no better than anyone else's.

Does running replace lower body weightlifting? by lasertagin running

[–]Arkaic 1 point2 points ago*

I personally just do hill-work in place of squats. I run 7 days a week and I feel lower-body weightlifting would add too much stress to my training at this point.

To all you runiters who thing you know better. Who say eat this, train like that, don't worry about the speed, work on distance, yadda yadda yadda by stepqhenin running

[–]Arkaic 10 points11 points ago

The thing is, most new runners are not familiar with what could lead to injury. Often times the vets are speaking from personal experience or from seeing the same mistakes happen over and over again. The issue is that in running, you usually won't know you're doing something wrong until it's too late, which is why we try tell people not to run challenging races on too little mileage or not to jump too quickly into intense speedwork and other things like that. The criticism should be helpful, not antagonistic, but I'd say it's very necessary for most new runners that come here looking for advice.
