North Carolina here. The posts on facebook's newsfeed look a little depressing, though... by What_Are_Hot_Dogsin atheism

[–]AngelOfLight 24 points25 points ago

I believe it actually makes little difference. The California prop 8 appeal is slowly winding its way through the federal court system. If it does eventually land up before the Supreme Court, I suspect that the judges will uphold the repeal. It will be close, but historically, the Supremes have ruled in favor of the minority when it comes to civil rights.

Depending on how they rule, same-sex marriage will be restored to California, and possibly the other states under the purview of the 9th circuit court only. On the other hand, they could make a blanket ruling meaning that same-sex marriage will become legal in every state, regardless of what laws the retarded hillbillies have on their books. Supreme Court trumps State Court every time.

I think the bigot legislators have arrived at the same conclusion, hence the flurry of "pro-family" bills that they are attempting to push through. I suspect, though, that it will all be a waste of time and money in the end.

As a wise man once said: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice."

Creationists believe... by TheCreationistin atheism

[–]AngelOfLight 3 points4 points ago

Actually, there are still some who hold that the earth is stationary and the sky is solid. I'm not aware of any Christian flat-earthers, however.

I think OP's point was that if fundamentalists insist on claiming that Genesis 1 is a literal account of the Creation, then they must also embrace the view that the sky is solid and the earth is flat. The fact that they do not hold this view is indicative of their intellectual dishonesty. They loudly proclaim that Genesis gives a literal account of the Creation, but then go on to claim that the "firmament" is not to be taken literally, or that is has different meanings depending on which part of the Bible it appears.

Essentially, they are picking and choosing which parts of the Bible should be literal, and which should be figurative.

Researchers have identified the first gene to be linked to a rare condition in which babies are born without a spleen by MySkyin science

Does this apply only to infants? I had my spleen removed when I was about 19 following a car wreck. Aside from getting a staphylococcal vaccine every ten years, I have had no adverse effects from the missing organ.

Mexico advertising. Yeah... by melbob78in pics

[–]AngelOfLight 2 points3 points ago

I wouldn't. They can help you through temporary problems such as anxiety or insomnia, but you can get hooked deceptively quickly - in some cases (triazolam, for example), addiction symptoms appear in as little as three weeks.

You're then faced with a choice - a lifetime of continuous use, while your memory slowly erodes and cognitive impairment becomes more and more serious, or you can quit, and face an unknown period of crippling withdrawal symptoms.

Best not to start in the first place.

Opiates require a prescription. Benzos and antibiotics are sold over the counter. Which is a little strange, since benzo adddiction is a lot harder to break than opiate addiction.

Also, "Propecia" is spelled wrong.

The Smoke Monster? Depends on how you interpret the last episode.

r/atheism - looking for the best way I should respond to destroy his argument, help? by DX_Legendin atheism

[–]AngelOfLight 0 points1 point ago

First, introduce to him the concept of paragraphs. Then ask him for a verifiable source for his argument (Creationist websites don't count). Finally, you could explain that different methods of radiometric dating are used for different types of rock. Potassium-Argon is usually used for basalt (hardened lava). If you try a different method, you will get a wildly wrong result, because the isotopes that you are looking for may not be present in lava flows at all.

Pornography: Is it moral? by dangeroustalkin atheism

[–]AngelOfLight 25 points26 points ago

1) Does it harm anyone in any way?

2) Is it non-consensual in any way?

3) Is it performed under threat of force or any other form of extortion?

4) Does it exploit those who are too young or otherwise mentally incapable of understanding what is happening to them?

If the answer to all four is 'No', then we can say with some degree of certainty that it is not immoral.

Hard to say. She was a feral cat who just moved in one day, after we adopted one of her daughters from the neighbors.

Edit: I figured that might need some explanation. She was an outdoor cat that didn't seem to belong to anyone - she just wandered around the neighborhood. The neighbors would leave food out for her at night. One day she walked into their house when they opened the door to feed her, and started spewing out kittens. After a few weeks - once the kittens could take care of themselves - she disappeared again. We adopted one of the kittens, and after a while noticed the mother hanging around our house. We opened the door, she walked in, and she's been here ever since.

Bilinguals are smarter. by objectivetruth0in science

[–]AngelOfLight 6 points7 points ago

I always felt as though both languages (English and Afrikaans) got processed as if they were a single language. If I'm listening to someone speaking English who suddenly switches to Afrikaans in the middle of a sentence (my Maternal grandparents were notorious for doing that), I didn't feel like I needed to flip a mental "switch". In fact, in many cases I didn't even notice the switch at all.

My Grandparents were also bilingual from birth, and our conversations usually drifted from one language to the other, often unconsciously. In fact, on one occasion, I only became aware of what was happening when a British friend of mine was also present. He spent the entire conversation with a look of extreme confusion on his face.

I'm not a psychologist, but it always seemed to me that both languages were melded together, and the brain simply picked out the vocabulary and grammar that was needed in any particular situation, just as it would do for a single language. I was never aware of a "conflict".

On the other hand, it does mean that your vocabulary is approximately twice as large as a monolingual, plus you also retain a sets of grammar rules that do not exist in English. Not to mention a range of consonants that are pronounced differently, depending on the language, as well as a set of diphthongs that also do not exist in English.

Most scholars are of the opinion that the Book of Job was written in Northern Canaan and has very little to do with Judaism. Note that the name "Yahweh" is never used in the book. The major deity is El - who appears to be the father of the gods (including Satan - Job 1:6). The book of Job is a morality tale - one of a number of such stories found at Ugarit in Northern Canaan. It is very unlikely that the book was intended to be factual.

My mother is a hoarder. Here are 58 photos of her home. Don't let this happen to your family. Get help. by Child_of_Hoarderin pics

[–]AngelOfLight 4 points5 points ago

It is sometimes helpful to (tactfully) explain to a hoarder what it is that causes them to act like they do. Compulsive hoarding belongs to a class of psychological anomalies known as "anxiety disorders". This includes such disorders as OCD, addiction, compulsive gambling, etc. Essentially, the method that the victim chooses to alleviate their anxiety in turn becomes the catalyst of further anxiety, leading to a never-ending cycle of anxiety/abnormal behavior until something snaps. (This usually means that the victim ends up in a mental facility, or dead. Suicide is common among sufferers of anxiety disorders.)

A Cognitive Behavioral Therapist will usually have the therapeutic tools to break the cycle, but your mom will obviously have to consent to therapy. Sometimes, simply letting them know that they are not alone, that there are thousands just like them who have learned to live a normal will be all the impetus a victim needs.

There are reasonable explanations if you are open to accepting them. I once got perma-banned from a Christian Rapture forum for daring to suggest that the experience that the OP had may have been biological and not demonological.

Some people need to believe so badly that they are will prefer to accept that they are being harassed be demons rather than a having a fairly common neurological response.

You're aiming your ire at the wrong entity. The YP guys couldn't care less what you do with their book. Burn it, use it as toilet paper, invent an extreme form of skeet shooting, whatever. They really don't care. They DO care about the income they get from companies who are still willing to pay for ad space. And it is these people who need to be the targets of our righteous anger. If we just took the time out to explain that they are essentially wasting their money, the problem would disappear overnight.

Angry Muslims Demand That Police Protect Their Hurt Feelings From Rushdie Book Reading by hizbushaitanin atheism

"It is responsibility of police, administration and organisers to ensure that no such things happen in the event but it is unfortunate that the banned book was read," he said, adding, "action must be taken against those who did it".

Maybe I'm missing something, but surely Allah is capable of doing his own smiting when he gets pissed? Why do the Police have to be dragged into this? Isn't this a tacit admission that Allah doesn't actually exist?

[–]AngelOfLight 0 points1 point ago

Thank God that the Bible contains such detailed plans for the construction of an MRI machine. Otherwise, we would have had to spend centuries discovering things like electromagnetism, hydrogen atom spin states and high-resolution imaging techniques. Not to mention the highly complex computers that translate hydrogen spin states into recognizable images. Truly, we have an amazing God!
