Emergency rooms aren't free. I've had one break around the pivot, and a friend had the lock bar break. We don't hate on Gerber just because they're cheap chinese knives, we hate on Gerber because they're a damned hazard.

Knifeworks actually has a limited run of them right now with ~~red scales~~ their picture is a placeholder, it's black, andM390 steel. It's 189.95, but with that steel it's not a bad price.

You've been hearing wrong. Springs only wear when they're in motion. Relaxed or under tension doesn't matter.

Just a dime a dozen cheapo survival knife. Relatively soft high stainless steel. There are probably dozens of slightly different versions of the same basic design, almost all of them are under $20. Don't mean to knock your knife, but there's nothing special about it.

if the back of the blade is rubbing on it, it'll probably scratch the hell out of the finish. A knife blade is generally going to be the hardest material you carry, excepting a glass breaker I guess, so it'll pretty much scratch anything.

Sharpening the back would qualify it as a Dirk or dagger or something like that, which would make it illegal to sell across state lines I believe. Spyderco already caught hell from customs on their spyderfly balisong, I doubt they'd do it again.

Emersons are way overpriced, I agree. Personally, I'd put VG-10 about equal to 154 CM, but the latter tends to be a lot cheaper, not counting Emerson.

The Gerber axes I've had experience with all have had shoddy handles. The heads are fine, but the handles fall apart pretty quick.

Yeah for a true spearpoint it ought to curve at the spine at the same place as the bevel. It is a pretty aggressive drop point though.

Ah, I misread your comment. Still, I very much doubt he'd get in trouble for an x-acto knife. By that logic, a loose razor blade would be illegal to carry.
