As a tall male w/ a short male friend I just had my world shattered into what short guys have to put up with! Why is society so cruel? by MrTrampStampin AskReddit

[–]Acco 2 points3 points ago

It's definitely rough as an Asian male. I'm 5'7", somewhat intelligent, outgoing, sufficiently socially adept, I also work out and have decent looks (or so I'm told). I live in Europe. My current gf is my first real gf, we started dating when I was 26 (I am now 27). I had lost my virginity not long before that, mind you (a few years back). Because I was getting nowhere and it really depressed me - even though I used to go out regularly and met plenty of people/have quite a few friends, both male and female - I had to resort to online dating which is super uncommon here. Luckily, there I met my awesome and pretty SO, but that took quite a while (she's a native Caucasian btw).

The point is, if you're a short Asian male in a foreign country (and I was born and grew up here!), you're pretty much screwed. Even if there's a lot of Asian girls around, you're still at a disadvantage as an Asian male because they have no problem with hooking up with Caucasians/Blacks etc. You jsut don't show up on girls' man radars (or MANDARs), you're simply being ignored. And that hurts! You know how they say that suddenly every girl takes notice when you have a gf? I'm not so sure about that, I'm pretty convinced the majority of girls still doesn't register me. Sure, there are exceptions, but they're few and far in between. Of course I never went for the ugly girls, but hey, almost no one wants to, so you can't really judge me for that. Fact is we guys have to fight an uphill battle our entire life.

But enough with the pessimism/realism. Tell your friend there's always hope. There are definitely girls out there who would be into him. I had almost given up. No matter if he meets that someone or not though, he absolutely MUST accept that he/we get treated differently (I realize he's still shorter than I am, on the other hand, only a few of the other guys here are about my height, everyone else is taller, so I imagine it's roughly comparable) and are dramatically handicapped in the dating department. Is it unfair? Yes. Was I deeply depressed about it not two years ago? Absolutely. Will I get paid less/have no chance of climbing the career ladder beyond a certain point? Yup. But to accept it and move on is the ONLY way to even have a shot at happiness/being content with yourself and your life. I know it's very very hard when you're reminded on a regular basis. But he must try. Though I get the impression he's already quite a boss about it, isn't he? (Then I'm sorry about my rambling!)

Kudos to both of you!

Wow, I think you just opened my eyes. Thanks! Even if it means we're even more screwed than I tought. Luckily, there are girls who don't need guys who are that tall - I'm 5'7", my gf is 5'3". I'll admit though, those are few and far in between. The fact that she's my first gf and I was 26 when we started dating (we met online) says it all (I'm a guy with solid self-confidence who is outgoing and doesn't look TOO shabby, always have been - the other guys here are just ridiculously tall). It's a rough world, even for the "not that short, but still kinda short"-guys.

Fellow 5'7" guy here. I know the feeling, bro. It's an uphill battle for life - no matter if it regards dating, your career etc. I mean, sure, there are shorter guys out there who have it even harder - my sympathies go out to them - but on the other hand, I'm pretty much one of the shortest men where I live (Germany - you wouldn't believe how tall everyone is here, especially in my city).

Yeah, that pisses me off, too. You're right there talking with female friends and they say that stuff. Uhm, yeah thanks for letting me know that you could never date a guy who's 5'7" (my height) because that's WAY too short. I really appreciate that. I mean, I would never mention that I found a girl unattractive because she has a flat chest or fat ass if I was right in the middle of a conversation with a girl who has a flat chest/fat ass. I don't know, I really think it's rude and inconsiderate. Double standard indeed.

Cue this to that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5JvbD2Zc9I One can dream..

Hell, they should have made a classic boss fight ending with the crucible specifically only decimating the reapers. Afterwards, if your war assets are high enough, you'd get a slideshow with pictures like these and maybe a little text with some after-story (what happened to everyone etc.). Still would have been TONS better than that bullcrap we got. Actually, that would have been a PERFECTLY fine conclusion with the trilogy IMO.

That actually seems plausible.

There was this "red line" from which point on the killings became irratic. Maybe Gere killed the assassin dude during that period for real and then - consciously or unconsciously - became the killer himself. It would seem a little too obvious, though.

New Zealand's "Copyright Amendment Act" went into effect today at midnight; anyone caught downloading copyrighted content illegally could face fines of up to $15,000 and have their Internet cut off by mepperin worldnews

[–]Acco 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And of course, you're being downvoted.

Downloading something illegally is just that - illegal. It's theft of intellectual property.

Now how the law is made is the critical part (not that such a law is made at all, that should seem logical and reasonable): As long as the proceedings and the fines are reasonable, I don't see a problem.

Cutting off internet access for example doesn't seem justifiable to me under any circumstances (maybe except you're a super crazy notorious hacker which uses the internet as a weapon, causing significant damage - this should be a very rare case and has nothing to do with downloading stuff illegally). That would be infringing on your rights.

Also, intrusions into your 'online privacy' must only be on a need to know-basis and there must be probable cause. And of course, the burden of proof must be on the prosecutor. That's how it's done in a constitutional state.

Seriously, you're ok with there being consequences for stealing stuff in the real world but not for stealing digital stuff? It's the same, don't be hypocrites, people! The owners of said intellectual property have rights, too, btw. Like I said, the important part is how the whole copyright enforcing is implemented.

Seriously, that was disappointing. And you return to each city hub at least once. Sure, there are like two new sidequests each time, but still.. map recycling at its finest.

I'm not so much complaining about the content quantity, rather the overall presentation. Sure, Detroit and Hengsha weren't too small and very nicely done. But you really thought you were going to see Upper Hengsha and Montreal and more of Panchea - hell, you're flying there for the main plot! I believe, the devs had originally planned for them to be city hubs, but apparently had to be cut from the game - and you really notice that. Similar thing with the bosses: there was ZERO background story to them except them appearing for a few seconds in the intro/cutscenes - they were just some generic bad guys.

One additional city hub, maybe a few more off-city locations (thus also more story development), some minor tweaks regarding balance/difficulty/A.I. and this would have been the game of the decade!

In many German cities, Muslim arbiters, or "peace judges," are settling criminal cases before law enforcement can bring the cases to court. That is undermining Germany's rule of law, according to a new book. by MrTulipin worldnews

[–]Acco 1 point2 points ago

Yep. But that's a general problem, regardless of which crime has been committed, right?

Proving something in court is hard because of the in dubio pro reo (in doubt, for the accused) principle - which, all in all, is a good thing.

Don't forget though that physical evidence can also be a major factor in cases regarding physical violence, possibly even more important than witness testimonies. I think MEs can often tell whether injuries resulted from a fall or someone's fists (especially if those fists themselves have matching scratches/hematoma).

Hi guys, German law guy here (between 1st and 2nd "Staatsexamen").

Relevant article/"Paragraph" is § 230 StGB: It says that "vorsätzliche" (on purpose) and "fahrlässige Körperverletzung" ('negligent' battery/assault/whatever, don't know the correct American/english terms) are "Antragsdelikte", UNLESS there's "besonderes öffentliches Interesse" (special public interest) for prosecuting the crime - like Afirejar said.

Keep in mind though that as soon as it's "gefährliche" (dangerous) or "schwere" (severe) or "Körperverletzung mit Todesfolge" (battery leading to the victim's death), it becomse an Offizialdelikt/the crime will be prosecuted by the state regardless of the victim's opposing intention. So it basically depends on the severity of the battery. And the bar for dangerous battery isn't particularly high - it's sufficient if there's multiple perps involved or if the perp used a dangerous tool (which is pretty much anything)/weapon, for example.

I only played Privateer 2, hell, that was the first pc game I bought - and with it a joystick and a soundcard for the family desktop computer (Pentium 1 75Mhz with 8mb RAM).

I thougt it was great - especially the cutscenes with Clive Owen and Christophe Walken. How was the first part?

I really do miss joystick games, I also played racing games with my (later on) trusted Sidewinder Precision Pro. A few awesome games I remember: G-Police, Forsaken, Incursion(?), Starlancer.. ahh, good times!

Hmm I wonder if there'll be something like that in the future: a portable low power LASER PHALANX (kinda like those close range anti-missile defenses on ships) sitting in your home killing off those nasty insects. You'd only need a tracking system that's affordable and sophisticated enough at the same time. I'm sure we'll get there eventually :)

Can someone maybe decode it over and over with a program? I did it manually like 3 times but it was till jibber jabber.

Also, I'm pretty sure that upper/lower case makes a difference somehow. That's why I used the American keyboard configuration ("upper case" ; bevomes >). But that's just speculation of course.

It's ridiculous.. you should get all the stuff which you would get when hacking including all the datacores for entering the correct code/password plus a small xp bonus. After all, you want through all that trouble (sometimes more, sometimes less) to find it. That wouldn't be unfair to hackers either because there's still enough keypads and computers where there's simply no code/pw.

Ha, I think our first playthrough was very similar indeed.

Because I also killed the last guys in the pre-aug phase. I really thought that was badly handled by the devs. I mean, here I have a tutorial popping up explaining combat to me and no non-lethal takedown means, only this neat combat rifle with a laser sight. Instinct says it's okay to kill those intruders who are slaughtering your co-workers and smashing up the building.

First playthrough I did on normal with a 90% non-lethal rate (would have been 99.99% but halfway through I read somewhere that kills in the pre-aug phase count against the Pacifist achievement), second on hard as a pure pacifist. Now I just started again and I'm going all out rambo - but you're right it's not that easy. I think it will be lot more smooth sailing though once I get a silencer and don't pull half the map when I shoot someone.

Oh and it doesn't really make sense why lethal takedowns should make more noise. You would think stabbing someone with those ceramic badboys would shut them up instantly. At least Adam could KO them first and then stab them (no screaming) or choke them to death. Ah well, the game just tries to punish you for playing hitman.

1 - Ok, that's true. Having more augs makes gameplay more diverse, I see that now. I would sneak through a level first and only take out a few enemies non-lethally and then backtrack and explore all nooks and crannies and neutralize the rest of the enemies (at least I tried to). Because I could.

I just wish the heavies and bots would have posed more of a threat. Like heavies being immune to tranq darts and resistant to the stun gun and small caliber rounds. Walker bots needing 2 or 3 emp grenades (it's not like they're that rare).

I also thought that hacking was overpowered. The XP and datacore rewards coupled with keycodes from E-Mails and stuff from storage containers made you rich and strong early on. If you hacked bots and turrets it made your participation in certain parts totally redundant (waiting for the elevator in the news building, clearing out the Port level) - granted, if you play pacifist, that's not an option, but at least you can disable everything. Anyways, having high hacking makes everything easier: stealth (turning off cameras, opening up alternate paths, findings weapons, stuff to sell -> more weapons/upgrades). In DX 1 you pretty much only hacked turrets/bots and laser booby traps.

2 - Oh, the MJ12 main base below UNATCO.. yeah, that was amazing. Also, the VersaLife labs (maybe you meant that? because there's a gray there).

4 - The choice wasn't that easy for me either. Sarif lied to me but I felt he had good intentions. Darrows was a little bit nuts but I saw his point. Taggart was honest with me but on the other hand he thought himself as better than the rest and wanted only a few select people to have power which I found dangerous (the CASIE personality profile said so when I confronted hi, in the convention center).

If I had to choose for real, I'd go with somewhere in between Sarif and Taggart I think. Gimme dem augmentations, but please, get some governmental oversight in place (not too much though).

True, there's a huge gap between Fallout 3 and New Vegas. If you deviate too much from the main quest path the first few levels in NV (Goodsprings -> Primm -> Novac), Radscorpions, Cazadores or Deathclaws will eat you for breakfast in two seconds flat. The revamped skill system added to that: no easy maxing skills without DLC and only a perk every two levels.

Yeah, credits were really abundant except right at the start when you wanted to buy the praxis kits AND vendor stuff AND the informant tips. But you could always come back later and the tips weren't that great anyway.

And yup, the whole stealth enhancer tree was a joke. What actually enhanced your stealth capabilities was the silent running combined with cloak (and maybe energy).

I kept the 10mm pistol for bosses and dumped all weapon upgrades I found into it which made it ridiculously powerful. Just stunned the bosses with stun gun like you did or with grenades and let the 10mm monster loose.

Fun? ABSOLUTELY! I thought I had made myself very clear in my post. Hell, I even said DX:HR is a worthy successor to the DX 1 - which is very high praise. If I thought DX:HR was really abysmal, I wouldn't even have bothered asking others for their opinions on it.

Challenging? Certainly not too easy! A tad bit more restrictions with the praxis points was all I'm asking for. Which in the end is definitely NO gamebreaker (hence the 3rd playthrough).

Your statement just confirms what I've been suspecting all along: you thought I hated DX:HR and tried to attack me just like a good fanboy does. I can almost live that, so let's just leave it at that, mkay.
