Yes, it is the rotation of the core that causes the magnetic field, but if it was an average sized core for a planet of our size, the magnetic field would not significantly extend beyond our surface.

I have a couple. I count myself thankful that I haven't had to experience what some of the people in this thread have experienced.

1) Passing a kidney stone. A very small one.

2) Once I ran too far - above my limit - with a running buddy of mine. We did over a half marathon without training for it. I hit "the wall". Extremely painful.

3) This one, I think takes it: I bruised my heel once during rugby practice. I did not have a back-up for the game, so the team doc asked if I'd like a shot in my heel to dull the pain. The shot went in the bottom of my heel. Let me give you a point of advice: NEVER GET A SHOT IN YOUR FOOT.
