I wouldn't go to Windows 7 just because the driver sets likely aren't out for your computer to adapt to it. 2 generations behind is to far. Granted Windows 7 has a driver emulator built in, certain functions may not work right.

6 years is plenty. and all I do, and I mean a big chuck of my business, is budget repairs on older rigs.

tell me how possible is it that the hard drive is encrypted? seriously. when the OS is trying to boot with corrupt or missing boot files that is the result most all the time, a large percent at that.

believe me I know the process you are getting at and if I where there i would run through it as well but I mean when you work with enough of these instances and you've done it enough times you hardly find yourself wrong.

also he can still save his data by popping his hard drive into an enclosure AND he can get a bigger hard drive then what he likely has plus a clean install with xp is always a good thing.

enclosure deliver a lot more basic of a command through the control board which stresses the hard drive less, even if its not detecting on a motherboard iv gotten data off this way.

he doesn't even know how to get to it. beyond that if the computer goes to a black screen that means its not getting to the boot files which means the HDD is not detecting on the motherboard. otherwise it would try to boot, fail, then either restart or blue screen.

what's your rhythm or reason? at least I gave him a possibility, rather than arbitrarily giving him directions that will probably result in him not knowing what he's looking at. iv been doing this for 6 YEARS and encountered this problem a lot on older machines, 80% or the time its the damn hard drive.

buy new HDD and reinstall windows.
