Russia, Japan aim for the Moon: "We're talking about establishing permanent bases." by mepperin science

[–]5user5 5 points6 points ago

I assume that most people are thinking Star Trek warp speed when they think of interstellar travel. The two examples you point out don't defy any physics, but at the moment warp drive does. I do think that people should live with the hope of something like that being discovered and fund as much science as possible.

Robot sail boat out to break world record by eyesight2in sailing

[–]5user5 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, probably not practical. The autopilot idea might not be so bad. Can't imagine how expensive that would be once it hit the market. Maybe the fully automated boats will be picked up by drug cartels.

An autonomous delivery vehicle that requires no fuel sounds pretty cool. Not sure how they would keep them from getting stolen though.

Good therapists aren't always easy to find. If one isn't working out for you then look for another. It sounds like you learned an extremely hard lesson to put it lightly, but I don't believe you should place all of the blame on yourself. I won't attempt to do a therapist's job, but I think having your daughter to live for is a good start.

It's not about what you did. It's about what you do now.

I'm a photographer, so why not start off with a photo-shoot for my new bike? by BtotheFin motorcycles

[–]5user5 1 point2 points ago

It's personal preference. I don't really like either of these as a photographs even though I enjoy the subject matter. It's just not the style I have grown to like after many years of shooting. Doesn't mean it isn't a technically good photograph.

This makes me wonder about sizing bikes for a rider. Of course there is too big, but is there too small? Is it just a comfort issue? Sorry for the newb question.

ITAP of a Flower by flyingfencesin itookapicture

[–]5user5 0 points1 point ago

I think this photo is pretty well done. If I were change anything I might move back a little to get the entire flower, or move in a bit and shoot it off center. Try and play around with interesting crops.

Don't worry about the downvotes. Some people simply don't like the subject matter or maybe they don't find the photograph striking enough. As a former photographer and currently studying botanist, I like it well enough. I think the portion of flower to the right is a little distracting. You would probably be okay cropping that out. I also think that if you isolated that one flower and got the rest out of the frame it might provide more focus. I think the plumed achene stuck on the pedicle is really awesome, but creates a tangent with the bottom of the frame.

Getting closer in is never a bad thing. Photography is an art of deduction. Remove all unnecessary elements.

How would I go about preserving plants in lucite or other clear resin? by 5user5in answers

[–]5user5[S] 0 points1 point ago

I would prefer to have them as close to the original plant as possible (not pressed). I have plenty of pressed specimens and I was hoping to take a more aesthetically pleasing approach.

Why does it "smell like rain?" by CapnFantasticin askscience

[–]5user5 0 points1 point ago

In the desert a lot of the smell comes from secondary compounds in Larrea tridentata. Just the moisture from your breath will release a very pungent smell. I have taken children on small nature walks through the desert and one of the things we bring is a squirt bottle with water. When they spray the creosote bush everyone of those kids yells "it smells like rain!"

I recently wrote a paper on seed germination and dormancy. Chemical dormancy is just one way seeds remain dormant and is usually associated with other types of dormancy. A big one is cool or warm stratification. A seed dispersed in April will often require cool stratification. This ensures that it will remain dormant until after the next cold season. Some other types of dormancy are physical restriction, morphological, mechanical, and various combinations of those. If you want to know more about this then look up anything by Baskin and Baskin. They have done a lot of work on it and wrote the text book.

If I don't graduate, I'm killing myself. by miathrowawayin confession

[–]5user5 0 points1 point ago

Try not to let your family's expectations bring you down. Easier said than done, but life is what you want it to be and not what they want. I would also try and understand why they want those things for you. They aren't bad people for wanting it, but expecting it is another thing. One benefit of graduating is that you might be able to go to a college that is away from your parents. That would probably be a good thing for all parties involved.
