Can any of you help me out? by BurgerWorkerin raspberrypi

[–]34Mbit 0 points1 point ago

In lieu of a Raspberry Pi (which are in very short supply/high demand right now), might I suggest something like the Beagleboard. It is roughly the same size as a RP and is technically on-par or superior, it just costs about $100.

There are different sizes of mobile phone cells. For this height, a pico-cell would comfortably serve 1.5 blocks.

Cellular network antennae questions by OvermindTekin networking

This won't be an issue in your friend's RV, but depending your direction and velocity relative to the cell, you can expect signal degradation when moving.

I can't remember exactly, but GSM cells have an upper limit of 80mph+ before negative effects take place.

If you don't wear a seatbelt while driving, you are marginally more reluctant to slam your breaks on before a collision. That's a valid externality.

FLAC audio files are still quantized, they just don't use lossy compression algorithms.

Apparently records have a different 'warmer' sound to digital mediums. I think it's a load of crap, but to each-their-own.

It's like riding a fixie; there are obvious technical inferiorities, but they are outweighed by subjective airy properties.

You're getting down voted, but this is how Islamic mortgages work. Because lending money at interest is difficult/forbidden, mortgages in Islam work by where the bank purchases the house, and you buy a component of the house each month, and pay rent on what would be the 'interest'.

For a start, you can stop referring to it as Africa. There are dozens of countries on that continent; each with their own achievements and issues. The longer you keep referring to Africa as some kind of giant homogenised country, the longer people will keep thinking that downtown Cairo or Khartoum are mud-hut backwaters.

BBC News - MPs say some apprenticeship schemes are of no benefit by quentinnukin unitedkingdom

[–]34Mbit 1 point2 points ago

The influx of 'apprenticeships' for jobs that can otherwise be done with no training, is a movement by the market to employ people at less than minimum wage (£0.04/hour or whatever it is for apprentices these days).

Google data center security by KerrickLongin netsec

As is usually the case, the human part of the security system is the weakest. A lot of data centres I've worked at will put you on access lists if you just fill out the paperwork. Security By Paperwork, I call it.

So that's one (1* rated) app you need to manage, then the software for your kid's old XP laptop (which needs a different software package to the family desktop that runs 7). Network-level filtering, be it at the router or at the ISP is the most straight-forward and robust way to go about it. As long as it is opt in, there is nothing wrong with it.

How would you filter content on mobile devices? A household these days is made up of a desktop, a laptop or two, and a stack of smart phones (running a variety of OS').

Can I get some advice? I am about to refinance my (underwater) house. We will have 300-350 a month in savings because of this. What should we do with the saved money each month so that it grows over time and can be relatively liquid? by Feed_Me_No_Liesin personalfinance

[–]34Mbit 0 points1 point ago

Depending what interest rate you're paying on the mortgage, you should look into a mortgage offset account. These accounts subtract their value from your outstanding mortgage when calculating interest.

For example, a mortgage of $100,000 at 10% will generate only $8,000 in interest when paired with a $20,000 offset acount.

What are you going to do about it? Demand for tobacco is inelastic; you need your fix. Our clever representatives have learned that society can milk your addiction to the tune of billions, pay a fraction in healthcare cost, and then return the rest to the treasury.

You're a cash cow for the rest of us. Keep up the good work.

Sure thing pal. Like students never forgot about Labour actually introducing tuition fees in the first place. Or about Labour going to war with Iraq, in the face of the largest protest marches ever.

Students don't vote, and students have the most transient political voting habits of any demographic bar the committed insane (and they can't vote). When Labour are back in power once Miliband is gone, students et al will start to support the LibDems as the other socially democratic party (because they sure as hell wont support the Torys).
