It's an ethnicity as well as a religion. And if your mother is a Jew, you are a Jew as well. A gentile woman and a Jewish man have gentile children, but a Jewish woman and gentile man have Jewish children. There's an ethnic aspect as well as religious.

I don't have to work as long as I follow the rules. I am marrying a Hindu guy. That is not following the rules. Let's look at it like this:

Cost of my school per year: 40k

Average private school semester cost for a doctorate in clinical psychology (what I am going for): $16,334

So if I was cut off today, I'd have somewhere around $250,672 in costs just for my education, if I did my doctorate in four years (statistically unlikely). But I intend to have kids as well. So you add in the cost of baby things and medical costs. And then add in a place to live with more than one bedroom, and health insurance, and probably a car, groceries, utilities, taxes, incidentals and I wouldn't expect the money to last me out of grad school, let alone through residency. But let's say I do...

I hope to have more than one child, ideally three. NYT tells us that the average cost for raising a child is $222,360, not including college. So that's $667,080 right there, probably less because you can reuse furniture and clothing. I'll want a house at some point, or at least a slightly nicer place to live. And then there will be my future husband's student debt, which will probably total somewhere near my own costs.

I'm 18 now. My life expectancy is 80.8 years, probably more because I take good care of myself and my family is frighteningly long-lived, so lets call 85 a conservative estimate. That gives me 67 more years. With 700k, that is $10,447 and some change to live off per year for the rest of my life.

So no. I'm not set for life.

It's much more common than people would expect, nu? My SO and I have talked about it, and we think the historically good Hindu/Jew relations come from both being non-conversion religions. Plus we're surprisingly culturally similar.

Okay, let me try to explain. My maternal grandmother (MM) is Jewish. My maternal grandfather (MF) is Catholic. My paternal grandmother (PM) is Jewish as is my paternal grandfather (PF). MM left MF four years after my mother was born because she is completely insane and was too young to marry (she was 22 when she left him). MF raised my mother, and therefore she is ethnically Jewish, but raised Catholic. PM and PF were married my father's entire life and raised him Jewish. So I am ethnically Jewish, because my MM was, even though she's a crazy bitch who has no place in my life.

Because of this, I and my siblings are all considered Jewish. My children and my sister's children will also be Jewish, but my brother's children will not be unless he marries a Jewish woman (which may never happen; I have a sneaking suspicion he does not swing that way).

I don't drink for medical reasons and because I don't like the person I turn into when I drink. As for drugs, I like myself well enough, why would I want to become someone else? I don't like putting strange chemicals into my body. Just doesn't appeal to me. As for clubs, why would I want to go to a dark, loud place with random strangers grabbing and grinding on my ass?

Well, right now I'm sick in bed. But normally, what is there to do? I don't drink, don't do drugs, hate clubs... I play a shitton of video games (my minecraft world has gotten amazing since I ended up stuck in bed) but that is about it.

I'm in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for PTSD and social anxiety. Usually my doctor and I sit down and talk about how I've been doing, what have my stresses been, if I still am having nightmares, etc. She explains to me how to be kinder to myself when I've done something wrong, how to stop blaming myself for things, and walks me through stuff to stop blaming myself. We do a lot of worksheets.

I never got very good with the violin, because my parents thought 5-year-old-me made too much noise (in their defense, I may have enjoyed the painful violin noises better than music). I usually accompany myself singing on the piano- I never really learned how to play classically. Mozart K622 Clarinet Concerto is absolutely my favorite thing to play on the clarinet. Singing is my real passion- I learned clarinet to play in my school's orchestra, as was required by the school.
