as someone who was formally a heavy cigarette smoker for 10 years, and who has been off the tobacco for 2 years my advice: Always remember, even though it might not feel like it at times, the longer you go without cigarettes the more you have no desire to smoke. I never thought I could quit, ever. And now I can't stand cigarettes. Good luck, and be patient with yourself! This takes time.

I think at 7 days the physical symptoms are gone. Nicotine has left your system (unless you are using patches or gum) and it's all mental from here. I quit about 15 months ago, and quite literally it has changed my life. More money, healthier, happier more able to date girls due to not smelling like tar-drenched-stinky-death.

Quit like a boss!

Unless they also have it.

EDIT: Also, I'm convinced that the "smokers always have horrifying breath and no one will kiss you" adage is just propaganda from middle school health class. I have kissed many girls and boys in my day, smokers and non smokers. Only one girl complained when she saw me pull out a cigarette. And she kissed me anyway.

Just brush your teeth!

The only issue with this is that around 94% of adolescent to young adult females is sexually active :/ so if she's female, there's a strong chance she pokes. Source: my old human sexuality textbook. Stats might have changed since I read it though...

I prefer kissing other smokers because their breath is always the same. Non-smokers breath is like whatever they ate last. It's like a pallete cleanser, except more of a palette destroyer.

Pro-tip: everyone should use a tongue brush/scrapper regularly. If you're a smoker, it will reduce some of the bad breath, also for tokers. Even if you aren't consuming through smoking, it will improve your breath, and apparently your taste as well. I used it for a week and I could tell my breath was much nicer already.

Edit: nothing feels better after waking up with cotton mouth after drinking or toking

Heard/read that too somewhere. Also, at around 2(?) weeks the mental craving will be at its peak. What really sucks is that you never really lose the urge to smoke, it's always somewhere in the back of your head.

[–]DrSmoke 23 points24 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I quit, after 15+ years of smoking, here is how:

  • Save up a bit of extra money, this can't be too hard if you are wasting money on cigs.

  • Buy extra herb. A lot, enough to last you at least a couple weeks.

  • Get rid of all tobacco products. No patch or gum either.

  • The next time you feel the urge to smoke, take a hit of herb. Just stay stoned. You will stop caring, and forget about the tobacco. The cannabis is stronger.

  • Now you can spend all that tobacco money on more cannabis.

I tried all the usual methods for years, with little success, and was a very long time, and heavy smoker. I came up with this "habit replacement" strategy a couple of years ago, and have used it to stop drinking soda, and smoking tobacco. It works with just about anything.

Take one habit, replace it with something not quite as bad. For soda I went to juice, then replaced juice with actual fruit.

Hack your brain, yo.

Good Luck.

I replaced my every two hour smoking of cigarettes with weed, worked like a charm. I also picked up a Volcano, my lungs have never felt better. I'd suggest a good amount of hiking/jogging/biking to help get your lungs back in order.

Allen Carr's book performed voodoo on my brain. Went from a 10 year, pack a day habit, to nothing overnight. That was 3 years ago and I have never had a craving or urge to pick up a cigarette since, spooky, but very effective stuff.

[–]AuxillaryPriest 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. 15+ year pack/day habit.

Just over a year ago I smoked an entire pack (minus 1) while I read the book in one sitting. I destroyed that last smoke and an extra full pack I had.

I've never looked back.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here, I quit almost overnight with that book, and although I wasn't craving cigarettes anymore, I was craving smoke in one shape or another. Cigarettes were replaced by trees that day, but hey, I thought that was the point to begin with!

Can you give a sample of the kind of stuff that finally changed your mind so suddenly?

[–]snkngshps 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Here's what did it for me: the idea that smoking doesn't actual feel good, it just temporarily calms the stress your body goes through from being addicted. I used to enjoy smoking a cigarette because it felt relaxing and good. It was hard for me to even want to quit because I genuinely enjoyed smoking my cigarettes.

But Allan Carr likens cigarette addiction to wearing shoes that are way too small and hurt you feet. Smoking a cigarette is like slipping off those uncomfortable shoes for a minute or two. It relives the pain momentarily, but almost immediately after your cigarette is over, that pain returns. When you finally quit smoking, it's like taking those shoes off for good. Your body returns to normal, your blood pressure lowers and you won't be in that constant state of discomfort.

I really really hope this makes sense. I'm around an [8] and those were a lot of words.

Edit: I believe you can preview the book on Amazon.

[–]midsummernightstoker 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

haha, it almost makes sense. The only thing is both smoking and quitting smoking are "taking off the shoe". How about this: quiting smoking is letting the shoe shrink until your feet rip through it, destroying the shoe. It'll hurt like hell at first, but then you're free! [5]

Yes that book is extremely powerful. The first time I read it I quit for a couple weeks, which was the first time I went multiple days without a cigarette at all!

But then, I got big headed and thought I was over it. I smoked a cigarette, then the next week I smoked another, and before you know it I was a smoker again.

Just keep this in mind. That's not a magic book. It'll require serious discipline to pull off, but if you truly want to quit, the book helps loads.

[–]saturnblack 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This should go to the top. This book really helped me quit smoking. Someone posted a free PDF of it and I read it over the course of two or three days at work, but you could probably knock it out in a couple of hours if you went straight through. I was shocked at how easy it was and now I recommend this to all of my smoking friends.

[–]DrSmoke 5 points6 points ago

[–]evilnight 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Damn straight. /r/electronic_cigarette will get you started.

If the only ones you've ever tried are disposables, look like cigarettes (small size), or came from a mall kiosk, you haven't even scratched the surface of these wonderful devices.

Switched overnight from a pack a day to these. Vape them as much as I like, almost no mechanical difference in the 'smoking' process, get as much nicotine as you like including zero. The nicotine is not what kills you, by the way. The smoke does.

After three weeks, cough is gone, taste and smell are back, just like quitting, except I can still enjoy the activity with absolutely no health risks.

Protip: Do NOT mix tobacco and ecigs. Switch cold-turkey and vape the hell out of the ecig as much as you want, but do not have regular smokes in your reach. If you stay away from regular smokes for a month or so, they will make you sick if you go back to smoking them. You'll prefer the ecig.

Dunno if you'll see this, but "Tea Tree Therapy" tea tree oil infused toothpicks are what helped me quit. I get them at Whole Foods in the toothpaste section. Totally refreshing and helps with the hand-to-mouth thing.

[–]DidntClickGuy 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Man oh man, you will be amazed at what happens to you when you quit. I quit...jeez, 16 years ago.

Your sense of smell will come back, for better or worse. You will soon realize how bad your clothes smelled to other people.

You will still have periods of high and low energy, but less, because your nicotine levels aren't fluctuating.

You will see how fucking hard it is to quit, and that will help you realize how evil tobacco is. When I first tried to quit, I swore up and down I would not take my cigarettes with me to class. I set them on the dresser and walked out of my dorm. As I was crossing campus, I suddenly realized I was smoking a cigarette. I had put them in my pocket and lit one up as part of my morning routine, totally unconsciously. It freaked me out so bad I quit for good after that.

You will breathe easier. You will heal faster. Getting a cold won't be a 3-week process.

After a few years, the thought of it will disgust you.

I used to have to take little baby tokes or I'd break out into a painful coughing fit. I've been smoke free for just a little over a month with the help of Allen Carr's book The Easy Way and I can take HUGE. MONSTER HITS. MO-MO-MONSTER HITS!! Alright, going through the same thing as you right now, haven't smoked a cig in about a week and a half. Patches + trees is working phenomenally for me, the patch takes care of the nic fits and the trees help my need to smoke something. Give it a shot if you start struggling.

I am a pack to pack and a half a day smoker. I picked up an e-cig at the gas station on a whim 2 days ago have not smoked more than 4 "real" cigs since. Might be worth a try?

Three things helped me quit:

  1. This timeline

  2. Smoking a j when the cravings got really bad.

  3. Not giving up after giving in and having a cig. You just have to keep trying to quit. You might slip up, but you cannot use this as an excuse to completely abandon your efforts!

Good luck :) it sucks ass.

Upvote, and fun facts I learned on CDC website!: Men who smoke cigs have 23 times higher chance of getting lung cancer than non! *Lung cancer kills more people than prostate, breast, and colon cancer *COMBINED *Yeah, think about all the breast cancer madness, fundraisers, awareness thingies, WELL ITS LESS DEADLY THAN LUNG CANCER. WTF? *Not a fact: If you quit smoking, every week you'll probably save like 20 bucks and free up a few hours.

Just make them your enemy, that's all there is to it. Keep a pack with you and any time you want to smoke, take one out, say "NO", and put it away.

If you try and remove them from your life, you will fail the first time somebody offers you one on a night out, or you're around smokers. You have to get used to denying yourself actual cigarettes.

You just need to make a conscious decision to not smoke, just have the will to not buy a pack and stay away from situations where you smoked for a little while. Not having a smoke while drinking was difficult for me, it just takes will power. Also, if you have friends that smoke try to get them to quit too, its really hard to say no when everyone else is going out for a smoke.

I've been a non-smoker for 50 days today. Trees got me through the first (and worst) four days... It'll take around six weeks before cigarettes will start smelling horrid and about two months before the habit to dissolve from routines.

You, mate, have made a brilliant decision. I'll toke for yer success.

MOAR UPVOTES!

[–]soxfan2522 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hey man, hopefully I'm not too late to the party and you'll actually see this. I quit smoking last April after being a fairly heavy smoker for ~6 years. Here are the best tips I can give you:

  1. The absolute most important thing for you to remember is that it will get easier. The first little while sucks, and it's a constant battle of willpower. This was the reason I was unable to quit the first few times I tried. Not because it was actually that difficult, but because I was trying to picture dealing with that feeling for the rest of my life and kept saying fuck it. But the longer you go the easier it gets, I promise.

  2. Don't make excuses. It's really easy when you're drunk or above a [1] to break down and have one. This is crucial to avoid, because it inevitably leads to slipping up and buying a pack, then going right back into the cycle. Which brings me to my next point:

  3. Build a streak. If you slip up and decide to smoke one cig after trying to quit for a few days it's much easier to justify doing this a few days later, which again, leads back into the same old cycle. The longer you go successfully resisting urges the more of an accomplishment it becomes and the less willing you are to blow it. It manifests itself in a bunch of different ways too. If you're constantly talking about quitting and going back to smoking a couple days later, when you start a quit campaign your friends might sort of laugh and say "Yeah we've heard this one before." If you last a couple weeks it becomes real, and everyone starts to get in on it. Positive reinforcement goes a long way, and hearing your friends say "Wow man, I can't believe you've made it this far without a cig, keep it up" brings other people into it and makes you feel like you're letting them down if you slip up.

Good luck my friENT, and let me know if you have any questions.

Hey you. Yeah, you. It's me, that voice in the back of your head that really innocently thinks about how you need a cigarette no matter what the fuck the occasion. I like to make you miserable by turning every enjoyable thing in your life into sad lamentation about how you can't smoke afterwards. Dinner? Screwed. Sex? Forget it. Trees? Good luck.

You want to get rid of me, all you have to do is realize what I am. A desperate, sneaky, and disturbed part of your brain that's afraid you'll never be happy if you quit something that's slowly killing you.

So when you finish eating a bowl of rice krispies or dropping a deuce and I start to tell you how you need a smoke now, when you get trapped thinking about how you're quitting and I whisper that a smoke will make quitting feel better, or whatever lame shit I pull...ignore me, move on, and do something else. Get used to doing something other than smoking after every one of these things. Take on a new motto: I got better shit to do than smoke.

Hey! I quit smoking on December 7th. Kind of. I still smoke spliffs, and occasionally demand a few puffs from a cigarette when I'm really stressed, but I'm getting there. Either way, my lungs feel multitudes better, and yours will too. It's a slippery slope, and a long climb, but you'll do it.

Grab a piece of filter paper. the stuff you line funnels with yo seperate solid stuff out of a liquid. Blotter paper also works. Get two pieces a couple of inches across. Take a cigarette. Light it up. Draw on it, but don't inhale, keep the smoke in your mouth. Take one piece of paper and hold it close to your mouth and blow the smoke over it. Observe how filthy the paper gets.

Take second draw. This time inhale properly. Exhale by blowing over fresh piece of paper. Observe that paper is far less soiled.

Ponder where the gunk went.

Just start trading cigs for joints. Go get a $3 roller and make a pack. Smoking a pack of those instead takes a little more fortitude, and for me really took to energy out of me to smoke the cigarettes too.

Today is my day #55 without smoking, I smoked heavily for 10+ years, and it's been one of the hardest things I've ever done.

I quit everything cold turkey, and am finally making it, after having tried several times, 3 months being the longest time.

I feel different this time though, I am commited 100%, my mind is strong, unlike the other times when I just knew that eventually I would go back to smoking.

To make this work I also quit drinking, partying, and anything that could make me want to run, scream and killed for a smoke. It worked! I've gone to parties now, ppl smoking near me and though I've felt urged, I just walk away and stay in my non-smoking zone.

Just thought I'd share my story, 'cause I feel good, and strong, and feel like I actually have willpower and can do anything I set myself to do. That makes me very proud of myself.

So 1 upvote for you my friend!!!

I quit smoking 9 months ago and exercising that level of self-control made me feel very alive. I bought a bike and now I ride all the time, pushing my body in a way I could have never done while smoking. I stopped smoking and never looked back. Now I live a life I thought I would never have; free of cigarettes, no more sneak breaks at other's houses and cold nights outside when I should be inside warm and cozy. Say goodbye to the smoker and be excited for growth and change!

Read THE BOOK - Allen Carr "Easy way to stop smoking".

Basicly it is about realising how much you hate cigs, how much you force yourself to smoke. It is about realising how much you are trying to like ciggarettes.

I quit smoking over 6 months ago, thanks to that book. True story.

Listen man. A friend of mine who has been smoking since he was 17 (just turned 31) quit cold turkey a little over a month ago. I watched it happen day by day. This motherfucker didnt use anything except his own will power. He didnt end up calling out of work, or making excuses about anything. Dude straight up smoked his last cig and that was that. He drinks whiskey, but he didnt resort to copping with that. He started exercising at our local gym, adjusted his eating habits, but above all he just stuck to his guns.

If you truly are determined at kicking this habit, you dont need a patch or gum or anything, you just need to believe in yourself, and have people around you that support you. He is a redditor, but doesnt around these parts. Honestly, i love weed, and i really like /r/trees, but replacing your cig urges by tokin up is a bad idea. Do it the right way before you start kicking habits by using other habits.

Good luck man.
