I know how you feel. The people on this server are incredibly good. Some thoughts:

  • Don't act like you're on a valve server. Stick with the team, pay attention, and don't over-extend. (Although I do this all the time when I'm airblasting or cabering things.)

  • If you want, pick a class and stay with it. Practicing one class exclusively can have the fastest advancement, but it can get boring.

  • Keep playing. It's infuriating, but playing with really good people is one way to get better fast.

  • There are plenty of training videos on Youtube. There are some really good people out there with great videos, describing what they're doing and why.

  • Don't look at the scoreboard. It makes you too single-minded about your own score, which distracts you from paying attention to your team and makes the game so much less fun.

Even though I rarely get to the top, the reason this server is so much fun is because everyone knows what they're doing, and they always make it a challenge. The regulars are a fun group of people to play with, too.

Yeah. I think my next step is going to be to pick a class and focus.

What I really like about this server is that people actually talk on comms.

This. Another thing to add though, is to know who you are playing with, both inside and outside of the game. Even when not playing TF2, I talk with the fine people of the server outside of it...tactics, strategies, etc. If you know how your teammates play as well, you can adapt accordingly.

Top notch advice. West is best for a bunch of reasons.

There are outstanding players on the server and yeah, when you first come after playing Valve servers it's pretty humbling. No better place to get better at your game, though.

There are no quick ways to getting better at tf2 besides playing. That being said, what is you main right now? Try playing scout or medic and focus on avoiding spam and always trying to live. If you can learn to stay alive and anticipate their shots all you have to do is line up your own. If you want a rough kick start to trying this, try tf2lobby.

BTW, who are you?

BigJoe.

Maybe that's my problem then, I tend to jump around quite a bit between classes. I'll play Demo or Soldier when guarding a cart, scout when pushing, and medic as my fall back "everything has gone to shit, and I need to play better" class.

I've left Scout, Spy, and Sniper pretty much alone so far. Once I feel I'm solid with Pyro I might feel brave enough to try Scout and hope to be kredit to team.

(usually play heavy, engie, soldier, & medic and working on pyro)

Well nothing helps like playing a class and sticking to it, I really recommend sticking to demo, asking for kritz, and splatting the other team! If you want to try tf2lobby.com you'll have loads of fun working in a semi structured environment, if you ever need people just ask in sever, happy to fill in with you!

Seriously? My girlfriend and I are trying to improve our skills in Highlander lobbies. You clearly know your stuff. She's a medic and she's trying to learn how to call matches, flash uber, rollout heals — the basics of competitive. We both could use a little coaching. I might take you up on this.

Playing on MGE and tr_walkway will quickly improve your fundamentals and your airshots, but only do it for 15-30 minutes at a time or it will breed bad habits and tunnelvision.

Also this server is pretty casual imo. I mostly come on West to gimmick because it has nocrits but isn't very competitive.

If you're serious about getting better quick, play MGE or Ammomod. MGE mod basically just has you dueling a guy over and over again, most people on there are godly so you'll probably lose a lot but you'll learn quick. Ammomod gives you and the other guy unlimited ammo + no need to reload and a ton of health, so you can use that to work on your aim, juggling, pipe connects, etc...

Picking a class to focus on getting good at will help a lot too. I have 3x as many hours with soldier than my next highest played class (Medic). I have more hours on soldier than my next 4 highest played classes combined.

My only concern with playing MGE is if you do not already have the skills to play them it just leads to frustration. If you are not already pretty good at playing your class when you enter an MGE, you will get your ass handed to you over and over again, and while it teaches you reflexes and how to counter 1v1, it does not teach you how to play as a team or how to counter classes like heavies, or how to counter multiple people at once.

For newer players, MGE can be more harmful than good.
