I finally decided to throw all my socks away and bought 20 pair of the exact same kind of sock. Life really does seem simpler now. (self.reddit.com)
submitted 1 year ago by cunninggren
I highly recommend that people try this to simplify their laundry struggles.
[–]AnnArchist 152 points153 points154 points 1 year ago
Yup, no more sorting socks ever again.... just throw them in a drawer and take 2 out at a time. fucking worth it man.
[–][deleted] 52 points53 points54 points 1 year ago
This morning I went to my drawer, pulled out 5 socks in succession at random, trying to make a pair... all were different. I only own 5 different styles. Needless to say, I wore sandals. Close enough.

lol, you gotta get more drawers.
[–]harlows_monkeys 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
Having two different kind of socks is only slightly more complex: pull out 3 at a time and there will be two that match in that triplet.
[–]EtaoinGuitardlu 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
We can generalize this by saying that for every N styles of sock you own, you would have to remove N+1 from your drawer at random to be guaranteed a matching pair.

Last summer I came to Manhattan and discovered that a washing machine would cost me $7 per load. I could buy 10 T Shirts for $9 on 14th St. So every couple of weeks I'd take my dirty laundry to the charity down the road and buy new ones.
[–]missstar 123 points124 points125 points 1 year ago
I'm not sure I'd want to wear a 90cent t-shirt without washing it first :-s
Also: $7 for a laundry load? Woah.
[–]wartexmaul 387 points388 points389 points 1 year ago
I pick up T-shirts from hobos for 50 cents a piece, wash them at home and then sell them to some loser on 14th street for $9.

This is the best thing I've ever owned. I've done all of my laundry except blankets in the thing for two years. It hooks up to your sink.
[–]ZebZ 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
Out of curiosity (I've actually been considering one of these for awhile)... you can do shirts and pants and big towels with these? How many per load? What's it take to do a week's worth of laundry for one person? What's it do to your electric bill?
[–]loxias44 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I have a similar washer/dryer combo. It's been great in apartments! I can do what I would consider a normal load of laundry (maybe a tiny bit smaller) and it's great! It takes a little bit longer than a regular washer (a large load takes 56 minutes on mine) but it's sooo worth it. They're a bit pricey, but if you consider how much you save over a few years on laundromat or pay washer expenses, it's well worth it. Energy consumption is minimal.
[–]apathia 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
ReefOctopus just linked to a washer. Does someone also make a washer/dryer combo? Or do you just always hang it out on a line afterwards?
[–]loxias44 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
There are washer dryer combos where the dryer is on the top and the washer is on the bottom. Those tend to be more expensive. I have two individual units, one hooking to the kitchen sink, one to a standard outlet. They cost about $600 each.
[–]etdubz 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
This is amazing. Trying to get my roommate to get one with me for our apartment. There is no close laundromat, and in Boston it's like $8 to wash and dry.
[–]movzx 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
Donated clothes can be written off in your taxes. You might have come out ahead on the deal if you did the taxes proper.
[–]benjamminson 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago
If that is coming out ahead, we are so fucked.
[–]dmazzoni 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
FYI, the standard deduction is $5,700 for an individual. You'd have to have more than $5,700 worth of donations in order to come out ahead.
If you own your own home and pay a mortgage, it's pretty easy to come out ahead, in which case charitable donations are all good tax deductions.
If you don't, it's rare that tax deductions actually change the amount of tax you pay.
[–]IbidtheWriter 21 points22 points23 points 1 year ago
Just buy a bar of tide washing soap and wash your clothes in a sink. It's less than 2 dollars and will last over a year. Hang you clothes on a line and iron your collared shirts.
[–]PComotose 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
When I donate used clothes, out of simple consideration I always wash them before donating them.
Redditors might be interested in knowing that clothes aren't always "recycled locally" but are often consolidated into huge bundles and then shipped overseas (frequently to Africa) where they are sold. Here's the rub: the cost charged for these clothes is less than the cost of locally produced cloth -- economics accurately predicts what will happen to the manufacturers of locally produced cloth.
[–]Zenshai 447 points448 points449 points 1 year ago
What if you need to add socks (due to rips and other loses)? Yea you can find the same brand, but then you're in danger of one day realizing you're a depressed old man because: "They don't make my socks anymore" :(
[–]TuNiX2 659 points660 points661 points 1 year ago

Manpacks: You've got better things to do.
That's an awfully big assumption.
[–]russxbox 38 points39 points40 points 1 year ago
You had me convulsing with laughter at the mental image of some guy waking up with a big goofy smile on his face, saying, "Yippee! I get to buy new underwear today!" Upvoted.
[–]pocket_eggs 32 points33 points34 points 1 year ago
I smirked at the image of a frowning guy weighted down by the responsibility of the task.
[–]R3MY 32 points33 points34 points 1 year ago
I have virtually no emotion at the image of some guy who picks up what he needs while he is out at the store buying other items, and is completely underwhelmed by the task.
[–]HerbertMcSherbert 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
I have memories of slight awkwardness at the times I shopped for underwear while an expat in Asia. The underwear department of the store was staffed by around fifteen young ladies, all looking after different brands and styles. As I perused the underwear each young lady would tell me what I was looking at then unpack an example and hold it up in front of me as if we were both meant to visualize how they would look on me and discuss. When the result was satisfactory the purchase was consummated.
[–]Neato 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
And after the purchase, did you buy the underwear?
[–]Alcnaeon 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I find myself slightly saddened at the thought of a guy forgetting to get new underwear and having to go get new underwear and like, he's got perishables and his trunk and stuff but man, he needs that new underwear and why can't they just ship him this stuff over the internet
[–]funnynickname 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I've done this for years. Every 3-4 years, I throw all my socks away and spend $40 and get all new ones, all the same. They all wear about the same anyway. I throw away any with holes, etc. When I'm down to 7-8 pair, $7 worth, I just toss them all, and start over. I have white ankle tennis socks and black socks for work/dress shoes. Saves me so much time, it's worth it.
[–]ImaLamer 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
Call it Singlepacks - because that's what it is. I'm in the same camp, being a single adult-male I am with the OP, KISS.
Now, when I had a spouse, this was kind of done for me. I opened a drawer, the stuff was in there. Not that I'm a sexist or lazy, she helped me be everything I could be - outside of being a laundry slave.
[–]johnkeye 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
My S.O. fucks my system completely up by depositing ALL black socks in my drawer because all my 70 exactly identical pairs are black.
The thing is, she has a lot of black socks. Fucking women.

[–]insomniac84 107 points108 points109 points 1 year ago
Until you look at the price. These were heavily advertised about six months ago, and never caught on for a reason.
[–]loxias44 107 points108 points109 points 1 year ago
I just spent about 5 minutes playing around on that site. $39 for 3 shirts, 3 pairs of socks, and 3 pair of undies? I would spend $50 just washing that shit before 3 months was up. For fun I decided to try 10 pair of everything, and that would be $280 every 3 months. I could walk to Target, but 6 of each for about $20 and walk home, and be happier than with this stupid service.
[–]Carpeabnocto 66 points67 points68 points 1 year ago
You think you can buy 18 items of clothing at Target for $20? I don't think they carry burlap sacks.
What does your laundry bill have to do with anything? I think they're assuming that you have some underwear already. (I hope you do, but I don't want to know. o.O)
This service is to slowly replace your underwear, because we don't think about that kind of shit. Every 3 months when your manpack arrives, you throw away something old. $39 for 9 items works out to about $4.33...which is cheap, depending on the brand names. If your mommy still buys your undies, maybe it seems expensive.
[–]DMNWHT 29 points30 points31 points 1 year ago
It's hard to get good burlap these days
[–]fuzzysarge 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
I would like to be able to help you. My friend used to work in a factory where they made burlap amongst other fabrics. He is no longer at that mill. He got sacked.
[–]gfixler 28 points29 points30 points 1 year ago
Every 3 months when your manpack arrives...
This seems patently absurd. I've been using the same underwear for like 6 years now. They're completely out of elastic and have holes everywhere. The only ones I've considered replacing are the ones where holes have formed in a place that lets my cock flop out during the workday. That can get distracting in meetings.
Mom bought me some new ones when she visited a few months ago and did some laundry and saw the sorry state they were in. The new ones are incredible, but still, every 3 months is crazy talk.
[–]Jonnywest 15 points16 points17 points 1 year ago
I completely agree with this guy. My underwear is as old as the earth, and i aint gonna waste money replacing it.
[–]nekoooo 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Either you have no girlfriend or you take off your underwear fast enough for her not to notice it being all holy and shit...
[–]loxias44 51 points52 points53 points 1 year ago
Nope, mommy doesn't buy my undies. Yes, I can buy 18 items of clothing for $20. $4.33 for a pair of socks? That seems a bit outrageous to me. For a shirt or undies, maybe, but for a single pair of socks, that's expensive.
[–]spoonraker 68 points69 points70 points 1 year ago
I actually just bought socks at target earlier today. It was $6.99 for 10 pairs. I got boxer briefs last weekend at wal-mart, $8 or so got me 4 pairs, and I imagine target is similarly priced.
So I guess $20 might be a bit of an exaggeration, $30-$40 is probably more realistic for completely stalking up on all 3 items, but $280 is ridiculously expensive and silly.
[–]InfiniteImagination 51 points52 points53 points 1 year ago
It's "stocking," btw.
[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 46 points47 points48 points 1 year ago
...unless you let them go too long without washing.
[–]gfixler 19 points20 points21 points 1 year ago
Actually, mom just visited a few months ago and bought me underwear. These things are amazing. They were in 2 packs for about $24, making them $12 underwear that I'm wearing right now, but it's like sitting in a meringue. Every time I slide into a pair, I have to wiggle around for a minute just feeling how awesome they are. People wouldn't mind their moms buying them underwear if they were these underwear.
[–]beardybaldy 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
Is she looking to adopt a 20 something?
[–]benjamincanfly 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
They sound great - what brand?
[–]gfixler 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
Benjamin, you are the first man to get me to pull down my underwear since that one doctor that one time like 8 years ago.
Anyway, they say "Harbor Bay" in them. They're these, and a bit cheaper online than in the store. At this point I should probably say that having worn scratchy, years-old underwear for years, these may be fairly normal, and merely seem like silken wonders to me, but I do know what a pair of new Hanes feels like, and these are a great deal softer. They also very elastic, so you can buy the size that fits you, and probably still fit another of you in there for really kinky times that are sure to screw with the time continuum.
NICE!
[–]nebulianpizazz 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
This service is to slowly replace your underwear, because we don't think about that kind of shit.
I know, I stopped wearing underwear 5 years ago.
[–]chaosdude78 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
Seems like a brilliant idea, but woefully expensive. I can go to the store and get an 8 pack of shirts for $10, or less if there is a sale. That, and there is no "starter kit" to get a first-time lump of items so that you can start with a load of matching clothes.
[–]WobblyAdam 27 points28 points29 points 1 year ago
Every three months? You'd have to be pretty hard on yer undies to warrant that?!
[–]elmuchoprez 46 points47 points48 points 1 year ago
In three months I probably go through 5-7 undershirts, although I wear an undershirt every day and often as my only shirt. They just start to look dingy after awhile.
I don't think I've ever "worn out" a pair of boxers before. I've missed a leg hole once or twice and ripped them, lost them, but never really worn them out.
And socks... to be honest, I don't even know where my socks come from. That's odd now that I think about it. I just always seem to have socks around.
[–]Authority 93 points94 points95 points 1 year ago
I think all my lost socks are ending up in your laundry
[–]ploshy 36 points37 points38 points 1 year ago
I was typing a witty remark about how stupid you have to be to miss the leg hole, when I remembered I did that last week. Twice. I suppose now the rubber band is on the other claw.
[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points 1 year ago

BLEACH + MRS. STEWART'S LAUNDRY BLUING. REALLY, THERE IS NO REASON TO THROW OUT A SHIRT FOR DINGINESS, FONZARELLI.
DOES BLUING REALLY WORK? WHEN I FIRST TRIED IT, I SAT IN A BORING MEETING THE NEXT DAY. THE EARLY AFTERNOON SUN CAUGHT MY LEG AND I BECAME MESMERIZED BY MY GLEAMING WHITE SOCK. AT ONE POINT, SOMEONE CALLED ON ME FOR SOMETHING, BUT I COULD ONLY THINK OF SOCKS...
[–]drmarcj 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
I was going to complain about all caps but then I noticed you were sitting in a meeting... wearing white socks! Unless you play for the Lakers, there's no way you should be wearing white socks to work.
[–]sequentious 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
I usually wear underwear as my only wear as well, but some people seem to frown upon that.
[–]bengalqb15 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
all that chipotle...
[–]Carpeabnocto 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Is every 3 months too often? If you keep a 2 week supply of underwear, a Manpack will replace your underwear every year and a half, or 84 weeks, or about 42 uses.
Is this a serious question? Every 3 months you throw away your oldest pair.
[–]WobblyAdam 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Ah maths, the answer to everything. That makes sense.
[–]divv_work 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago

Throw away socks as they get worn out, when you don't have enough socks left, throw them all out and buy a new set. It is pretty simple. I've been doing it for years. "my brand" is the one they sell big bags of. When they stop selling big bags of socks, I will be sad.
[–]brlito 87 points88 points89 points 1 year ago
I didn't know people had so many different socks.
[–]daboku 15 points16 points17 points 1 year ago

This just fucking happened to me. I went to the store, they didn't have my socks anymore. So I went online, found what appeared to be my socks, ordered an extra 20 pairs. Got them home, and THEY'RE NOT THE SAME.
I'm only 25 years old, and they already don't make my socks anymore :(
[–]dynamicweight 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago
This happens to me too! I got to target for my socks and they are the same brand but they keep changing them on me! So now I have my most hated socks from the longest time ago, the socks I sort of like but are starting to get old, and the newest socks that are nice and new, but I don't quite like them as much. Why is my life so difficult? Why can't they just MAKE MY FUCKING SOCKS AND SELL THEM TO ME?
[–]Bensch 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I'm 28. I've been buying the same socks from Patagonia for at least 10 years. Look for a brand that is about quality, not pure profit!
[–]Flanery 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
This is why you buy all the packs at the store and only wear/use 16 (8 pairs) of them. That way you can do laundry on Sunday night and have a whole week of fresh socks awaiting you.
[–]Zenshai 41 points42 points43 points 1 year ago
Damn, all the packs in the store... that's a lifetime investment in socks. I'm not sure if I'm ready for that kind of commitment.
[–]commandx 84 points85 points86 points 1 year ago
Getting cold feet at the thought of it?
[–]UCSCtek 51 points52 points53 points 1 year ago
There's nothing wrong with stocking up.
[–]jayknow05 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Would you have them boxed up and their vintages labeled on them in your climate controlled sock closet?
I could handle 8 pairs during the summer when I only wear them to the gym or to run, but during the winter I can use 14+ pairs a week sometimes!
[–]tfx 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
You are doing it wrong
[–]Thumperings 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
I have 30 pairs or hanes t-shirts and 30 hanes tighty\ whities.. I do laundry monthy.
[–]loggedout 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
That must be a smelly boat come day 30.
[–]HoorayForReddit 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
Alternating colors is the real way to go (white/black). When you lose too many whites, you buy black, and by the time your black supply has dwindled its appropriate to replace your entire white supply.
[–]jooes 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Start the process over again. Throw away all of those socks, and then buy 20 pairs of the exact same kind of sock again.
[–]CyanPeppa 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Simple. Toss out the socks that are torn/worn out, make as many other pairs as you can, and give those to the Salvation Army. Then go out and buy another 20 or so pairs of socks. Problem solved!
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
my father-in-law spent 4 hours measuring every one of his socks, and then his feet. He then calculated the optimal length sock, then went to Sears and spent another 4 hours shopping for them.
He's 70, retired, and in Florida.
[–]ketralnis 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Throw them away and buy them again. Socks are like $8 for ten thousand of them
[–]rasp 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I've been doing this for ~10 years now. When I bought my first batch I stuck one of the labels inside of my sock drawer so I'd know exactly which socks to buy again. Now, I just take a cell photo of that label and wait until it's likely Macy's is having some sort of sale and just buy like 20 pairs of gold toe socks at once. They're pretty much bullet proof and I've only had to switch exact socks once when they changed the style slightly.
[–]supersaw 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I guarantee that if the production of black socks screeches to a halt it will be because of a much bigger problem eg. nuclear winter. Which would totally suck without warm socks.
[–]dtambling 55 points56 points57 points 1 year ago
Long have I indulged the notion of getting rid of all my socks, taking a financial hit, and buying seven pairs of badass Smartwool socks.
You, sir, are an inspiration.

[–]Southern_Yankee2010 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
I have about 5 pairs of smartwool socks and they're my favorite. They're perfect for anytime except the hottest days, and then I simply throw on some flip flops and we're all good. I've had them for almost 6 years now with 3 years of wrestling and 2 of rowing. They're some rugged mothers
[–]Spatulamarama 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
I hiked 103 miles in New Mexico wearing super thick smart wool socks in the hight of the summer. I never had any problem with sweaty feet and i didn't get a single blister.
[–]StraightToVideo 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
2 treks and a season as a ranger at Philmont here. This man speaks truth. Heavy wool socks really aren't as bad as you would think in summer, they really wick away the sweat.
[–]ho0k 21 points22 points23 points 1 year ago
With my new job, I can now enjoy the luxury of buying 20 pairs every month and throwing the others out, or giving them as hand me downs. New socks are just as good as handjobs.
[–]more_exercise 37 points38 points39 points 1 year ago
You, sir, must have had some really bad handjobs.
EDIT: Or really fucking amazing socks.
[–]bruint 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
That's a lot of socks man.
[–]hihatfedora 194 points195 points196 points 1 year ago
But, what about when you wear shorts and sneakers? Or a business suit? Or khakis and brown shoes? Or black pants and black shoes?
Surely you can't wear the same socks for all of this!?!
Oh, wait. You're a redditor. Nevermind.
[–]coveritwithgas 137 points138 points139 points 1 year ago
Black for all business occasions (simplified by only having black shoes), 3 pairs of white socks for the gym visits I make never a year.
[–]section111 115 points116 points117 points 1 year ago
I use 6 pairs of white gym socks because I don't work out a lot.
[–]cynicalkane 73 points74 points75 points 1 year ago
Not that many people are going to care unless you're an important businessperson... but socks are supposed to match the pants, not the shoes.
[–]thebigbradwolf 71 points72 points73 points 1 year ago
(It's the belt that matches the shoes.)
[–]voracity 39 points40 points41 points 1 year ago
It's like I walked into a girls' night out with this kind of what-matches-what talk.
[–]RedSalesperson 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago
It's not complicated at all for men. Without getting into the details, the easiest rule of thumb when wearing a suit is that materials should match. Match your leathers, your metals, and whatever fabric your suit is (which is pretty obvious, unless you're mixing jackets and pants, which is either easy as hell or a voyage into a Land of Danger if you don't know what you're doing).
The only areas of difficulty are silks and socks. Matching a tie with a shirt has its own formulas (if you're not confident, always have the color of your shirt in the foreground of the tie and a color in your suit in the background), but people have trouble when it comes to pocket squares, ties, and silk knots. Never match your tie with your pocket square. Feel free to coordinate them, but if your tie comes with a matching pocket square, don't use it (keep it around, it might look nice with other ties/shirts/suits). As for silk knots, you should link them to a color in your tie, but don't feel the need to make them match. Alternately, you can just throw them out and buy some cufflinks.
Finally, socks. If you're very conservative in your dress, the old rule is to match socks to pants (if impossible, the socks must be darker than the pants). This is because the socks are, for all intents and purposes, extending the pants. If standing, your socks should never show, and even when sitting they will barely show, unless you have your ankle on your knee. However, if you think you've got the confidence and knowhow to have a little more fun with your socks, feel free. If you've got the look and skin tone to pull off black at the office, but want to be a bit more colorful so as to not look so funerary, almost any bright but rich color will do. In between your black shoes and black pants, it can be quite stylish to wear deep purple, crimson, or even yellow socks. If you're wearing a brown suit (and please do, they're incredibly underworn and look good on almost everybody), orange looks great. The trick with this is to keep in mind your position and the setting. If you don't have the gravitas and the rank to wear something like this without being questioned, don't bother.
So yeah, simple stuff.
[–]mattindustries 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
What is the rule when wearing jncos?
[–]barlister 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
See, it's not at all complicated.
[–]coveritwithgas 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
Wait, really? Why don't I see a lot more khaki socks, then?

Ignorance. The socks-match-the-pants thing is also more of an American 'rule'. It makes sense though - as it makes one's legs look longer. While socks matching the shoes makes one's feet look bigger. Additionally, matching socks and pant leg mean if one's pant leg is a bit too short, it's much less noticeable.
[–]jmone 15 points16 points17 points 1 year ago
Holy shit. No wonder my feet look so big and my legs so short.
[–]wevbin 40 points41 points42 points 1 year ago
First make sure you're not a hobbit because that may explain it too.
[–]Liberalguy123 37 points38 points39 points 1 year ago
Because people who want to be taken seriously don't wear khakis.
[–]rhllor 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
What matches blue jeans? Blue socks? :-\
[–]nixcamic 30 points31 points32 points 1 year ago
All black socks, the only way, white socks get way to dirty.
[–]fatpat 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago
Aha, but you can't bleach black socks (at least not the good ol' 'nuke-from-orbit' kind of bleaching that my socks, briefs, and shirts get when I've hiked/construction/yardwork all day.)
This is why I buy white: socks, briefs, work shirts.
[–]superiority 54 points55 points56 points 1 year ago
Yeah, it would be terrible if you got stains on your black socks. Why, just the other day, I was walking down the street when I saw a friend of mine. I waved to him, and he demanded that I take off my shoes so that he could inspect my socks. Noticing what appeared to be a several-month-old sweat stain (that had survived many wash cycles) on the underside of the heel, he mercilessly mocked me.
I felt so embarrassed. I think I will start buying white socks so that I can properly bleach them.
[–]reliq 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
Shittest Playboy letter ever.
[–]bomber991 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
I've just got black crew length gym-socks. So they're nice and thick and padded like those white socks, except their black so you can wear them with business suits too.
[–]Dirtylicious 31 points32 points33 points 1 year ago
eso si que es
[–]jayknow05 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
That's what it is. Also S-O-C-K-S
[–]MpVpRb 43 points44 points45 points 1 year ago
I did the same thing 20 years ago
[–][deleted] 121 points122 points123 points 1 year ago
Fucking sock hipster.
[–]serp 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I did this just 2 years ago and wish I'd done it sooner.
[–]Rafi89 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
About 10 years ago here. I replaced all of them every 3 years or so. Have 20 or so pairs of black and a half-dozen pairs of white. I do the same thing with underwear (boxer briefs) and undershirts. I also choose my dress shoes based on their availability in both black and brown.
[–]andtheniansaid 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
why do your boxers need to match anything?
[–]Rafi89 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
It's mostly the 'everything is the same'-ness. Removes the 'Gee, do I really only have this pair of tattered skid-marked Spiderman undies that I got from Santa when I was 12? Let me search some more...' time waste. Also the 'Gah, why did I wait to do laundry and have to wear these silk boxers? I've got half a chub all freaking day and we've got the sexual harassment team-building exercise today!'-effect is decreased. Basically, I figured out what I like, get rid of everything else, replace on a rotation, everything is simpler.
[–]Punkndrublic 30 points31 points32 points 1 year ago
I washed a duffel bag full of socks I had for some reason. I never wear matching socks so...life is always simple.
[–]mattyville 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I gave up on matching socks a couple years ago. I just pick around in the drawer for same color, and go on my merry way.
[–]PaulTheOctopus 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
I grab one flourescent green knee sock, and one black ankle sock, then go on my merry way.
[–]InternetsWasYes 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I had a professor who always wore mismatched socks. When someone said "I like your socks," He would always reply, "Thanks I have another pair just like it at home!"
[–]la_cues 25 points26 points27 points 1 year ago
Fuck that, give them to a thrift store or something.
[–]cunninggren[S] 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
I'm on it. Good idea.
[–]Ms_Gaea 29 points30 points31 points 1 year ago
OR you could go to a laundry mat and add one random sock to every unattended dryer...
[–]DrBrian 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
Normally I'd agree, but most thrift stores don't really like having mismatched socks sitting in their stores. Even the super thrifty are weirded out by used socks and they just sit there until they get moved on the next store or tossed.
Seems kinda shitty when you realize it, but most thrift stores exist to make money for organizations, not to provide cheap clothing to people.
[–]pyrrh0 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
I did this right about a year ago. It seems so trivial as a concept but I'm not joking when I say it streamlined my laundry/morning routine.
[–]dnew 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
My mother always bought socks that you practically needed surgery spotlights to have enough light to see the difference. Midnight blue vs Navy blue vs black, with ever so slightly different patterns, etc etc.
First thing I did out of college was throw it all away and buy three weeks of black socks and three weeks of white socks. Done!
As an aside, I have a colorblind friend. Whenever someone points out his socks don't match, he says "I have another pair just like this at home."
[–]MRRoberts 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
What an amazing retort.
Catalogued and filed for future use.
[–]srone 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago
Damn, that's rough dude.
[–]Brachinus 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
No, it's cool. After they get "trained," they fit like they're custom-shaped, and you don't have a big flap of empty sock dangling over your littler toes.
The only downside is your wife looking at you like you're an idiot.
[–]cunninggren[S] 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
Now how the hell am I gonna solve that problem? Mo' socks, mo' problems.

Or you can just wear socks that don't match like I do. Since they are beneath my jeans/inside my sneakers at almost all times, no-one notices. To be honest, even if I took off my shoes, I doubt anyone would notice or care =)
[–]jdk 21 points22 points23 points 1 year ago
Look down, look up. Reddit is now twitter.
[–]srone 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
I did the same....and then I tried to replace them. White Hanes ankle socks. For God's sake it's a f'n sock....why the hell are you changing the damn style of a sock??!! It's not an f'n car where you can make stylish doors and smoother aerodynamic lines...IT'S A SOCK!
I bought some socks a year ago and I lost some...others have holes. I want a damn batch of new socks I can mix in with the old socks. But they're f'n different!!! I have 4 DIFFERENT styles of white ankle socks made by the same damn company!!
Hanes!!!...Do you know how much of an idiot I feel like when I am staring at the last 4 ankle socks I own that are clean...and THEY'RE DIFFERENT!!!
I think...DAMN, I need to go out and buy more ankle socks...BUT I KNOW THEY'LL BE DIFFERENT THEN THE ONES I ALREADY HAVE.
You think life's easier now...just wait a couple years when you're right back to the hell you think you've escaped.
[–]shaonian 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
It's a trap specifically to make you give up, throw out the old socks, and buy all new ones in the new style.
[–]mythirdeye 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago

[–]GreatGo0glyMo0gly 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
My father worked with a guy who owned 100 white dress shirts and 50 pairs of pants. He went to a laundromat to have them cleaned and ironed 3 times a year.
[–]Icommentonthings 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Almost there... I've switched to three colors all one type. Dr. Scholls Diabetic socks... and I'm not diabetic. They are super comfortable and breathe well, no binding, etc. White, Tan, Black. Super simple, work for everything from the office to hiking.
At first I thought they were a bit noticeable and people might think them odd, but then I realized what could anyone say? "HA-HA! You have Diabetes!" Funny thing is that I've converted a few friends and family to the wonderfulness actually, also without having the disease. :)
[–]hearwa 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
There seriously must be something to this hivemind thing because I've been thinking about doing this a lot recently...
[–]Cynner 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I did the same thing with underwear. Tired of working late, getting three hours of sleep, jumping into a black pair of lacy panties -- then changing my sleepy mind and putting on tight-fitting beige pants... I was not pleased when I arrived at the office and realized what I had done. Knowing I'm a woman who changes her mind often, I made life simple. All nude, no worry, no embarassing moments.

[–]kayura77 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Another option for the socks you want to get rid of:
If you travel, take the crappy socks with you (and maybe one good pair). As you wear them, throw them away. More room in your suitcase for the way back! (Works for underwear, undershirts, bras, even t-shirts!)
[–]breakbread 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
This post has inspired me.
[–]ipeev 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I was enlightened.
Don't throw 'em out, man. Save them for, uh... you know, stuff.

I'm upvoting this because I have been trying to psych myself up to do this. laudry day ends with a giant basket of mismatched up socks
[–]jon_titor 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I agree to an extent, but I have 3 types of sock.
The low cut white athletic sock.
The normal white crew sock.
The black crew sock.
These three take care of all my sock needs, and it's still no problem to match them up.
[–]jat0369 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Wow. I did the exact same thing this weekend!
