Sounds just like the husky/dalmatian/etc our volunteer fire department "adopted" from the dog catcher (more like called dibs on her before she went to the pound). She was about 9 months old and had a frayed rope around her neck running around town. Super timid, had obviously been beaten. But in less than a week she was house broken and very friendly. I'll post pics if y'all want. Edit/pics: Her name is Adena btw, Greek for fire.

As we found her

Chillin' at the firehouse

:)

Hanging out with us at extrication practice

With her handler for the day

Even though it was 105 that day she did not like ice cubes in her water, she kept picking them out and dropping them in the grass

One more happy pic

Sorry I don't have any of her on the engine, but she looooooves riding it!

She also already knows 2 languages, she can do tricks by hand signal or verbal command. Though we have spoiled the fuck out of her, she won't stand for treats anymore lol

That is a very cool-looking animal. Congrats on adopting her and giving her a better life! For some reason the predator-build with the spots makes her look a bit like an albino hyena, but still-- very good stuff.

Thanks for the pictures!

[–]Pepper-Fox 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I originally thought blue heeler/Australian cattle dog, but the ears and eyes scream husky. I can't think of any explanation for the spots other than dalmatian. She's a bit small for both those dogs, and she's got some pale yellow areas on her fur.

[–]Grimjestor 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, whatever she may be-- is one cool-looking animal, and claiming Dalmatian makes her a shoe-in for the Fire Dept. Best of luck in the future, and I wish her (and you) every possible happiness.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would totally agree that she has some blue heeler and husky in her. The spots could very easily be explained by the heeler and their merle coloring. As a former shelter worker, that's my guess :)

Interesting about the ice cubes. My dogs go bonkers for ice cubes, even in the winter. They lurve the frosty little buggers.

Could be that when they were assessing him, they tried to get him to do "tricks" but he was too nervous?

[–]larwk[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What would they be assessing him for?

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Temperament and general health :) There's a whole series of tests that shelter dogs go through prior to being approved to go up for adoption to be as sure as they can that a dog isn't a danger to the public. One of the tests they'll do is give the dog some food and then use a fake hand to reach into the bowl while the dog is eating to see if the dog is food aggressive.

Depending on the shelter, they'll check for fleas and give appropriate flea control products as needed. They may check for heartworm. They'll usually give a deworming medication. Ears are cleaned and nails trimmed. Vaccines are given if there are no records brought in by a previous owner for the dog as well.

[–]larwk[S] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes sense. I meant untrained as in he'd just go to the bathroom all over the place, chew on everything, jump up into my lap. But nope, he even lets me know he wants to be taken out.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, one thing about seeming to be housetrained - be patient with him if he has accidents in the first couple of weeks. It's super stressful on them to get a new home (don't get me wrong, it's good stress, but it's still stress ;) ) and it's really common for previously, perfectly potty-trained dogs to have an accident while they're trying to figure out the rules of their new home :)

[–]reddittrob 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He looks like a great dog. Good luck to you both. Treat him well; he will always do the same for you.

The main things I've learned is 1) He's a dog, and will likely do dog things. Most of them will be harmless, so embrace it and don't worry too much. 2) He's the rare friend that will ALWAYS be happy to see you and go hang out in the park or go for a walk. Reward and indulge that every chance you get, even if it's not your thing. 3) Take time to train him every day. Feedings are a great opportunity, but always train. It's good for both of you.

Quick, important note, though : I see pennies on the floor? Just so you know (and cause I'd hate to see this end badly), pennies can be fatal to your dog. Here is the same article in quick view form, if it works.

Best of luck to you both!

I'm too rich for pennies, we're talking nickles and dimes and quarters there. Buuut they're picked up now. I've still got a lot of dog proofing to do.

Dogs are usually much more well-behaved while they become acclimated.

I adopted a dog in May. It took about a month for his mischievous side to come out: I came home to find he had consumed all the leather (or pleather) on a sandal of mine. Now I have to get anything chewable -- shoes, books, even area rugs -- away from him when I'm not around.

[–]Arntegio 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Food dispensing toys will help with this. Keep things away from him, but chewing on rugs and books sounds more like boredom. Kongs and Canine Genius toys are my personal favorites, but there are many out there. Throw in treats, cram them in with some soft treats or peanut butter, and boom, hour of dogsitting.

This is the most important piece of advice anyone can give a new dog owner. Kennel train your dog. It's best for the dog, and best for you. Do it. Now.

I kept my dog fenced into our kitchen when she was a puppy to minimize damages. It actually made it worse; she chewed through the fucking sheetrock to get out and then chewed up all the carpet at one end of the floor. I'm pretty sure it was just out of spite.

She's old and lazy now.

[–]Eighty-Sixed 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh my gosh, my five year old dog is spiteful. And the princess. I love her to death though. But leave her alone for longer than usual and come home to a wrecked house. Or if the grass is wet in the backyard, she uses the patio because heaven forbid she get her paws wet. And if she's ready to go to bed, and you're reading with the light on or whatever, she'll lay in her doggie bed whining/sighing until you turn the lights out.

[–]jonnaybb 6 points7 points ago

This is not a site I am familiar with, but I just wanted to say thank you for adopting Rambo. I'm the one that took his original video. I am a pro photographer that volunteers my time and talent with my still camera to present the animals in the best way possible in order to help make them more adoptable. The shelter staff helps tremendously--they bathe and groom the animals and bring them out for each to have their own individual photo session. I don't normally video the animals, but I have seen Rambo get passed over numerous times in the past month. I'm not quite sure why because he appears to be such a fantastic dog. I had told one of my friends on another board about him because his euthanasia day was 7-23 and I was worried he would not get adopted. My out of state friend requested video so that she could see some of his personality--a month in the shelter is too tough for some dogs to come back from. I did the video, but before she could commit to taking him, someone passed the link to someone else who passed the link to someone else and, next thing you know, he's adopted! She called me back to tell me she wanted me to go pull him and I had to tell her that a lucky local someone got him! I was thrilled to see he got a good home. And I wanted to also thank all of the other members here that volunteered to send donations for toys and things. It was very inspiring. :)

Someone emailed me and asked me why a lovely 4 month old puppy was being euthanized. The city and county shelters have so many animals coming in they don't have the room, resources, or ability to handle them all. There are far many more animals picked up off the street and turned in than there are adopters. The average length of stay in the shelter Rambo came from is generally around 10 days. He was there well over a month--that should tell you how much the staff was pulling for him to get a home. I was hoping with the adoption of Rambo and Daisy and a couple of others when I was there Thursday that nothing would have to be euthanized yesterday. But sadly, after I left, there were five more dogs admitted to the shelter which means several of the existing dogs at the shelter had to be euthed in order to make room. Rambo and Diasy for sure would have been euthanized this week. I did also pull Daisy on Thursday just after Rambo was adopted and she goes to her new home in Nebraska on Sunday.

Every dog or cat in the shelter is in danger of being euthanized. Please spay or neuter your pets to help control the unwanted pet population. Instead of buying from a pet store, please consider adopting a shelter animal and save a life.

If anyone in the Tulsa area is interested in an awesome pup, I picked up another one yesterday that was dumped. He is not in danger of being euthanized because my group is no-kill, but I really would like to find him a good home. You can see "Cola" at www.pawsinneed.petfinder.org

Thank you again for all that you guys did to save Rambo. I appreciate it because he has truly become one of my favorites over the last month. To the adopter: if you don't mind if I get your contact information from the shelter, I'll get in touch with you and donate a photo shoot for a family portrait for you and Rambo.

To all the haters of the music on the video--blame the damned blocking software on youtube. It muted the original I had on there and that song was the first on the audioswap suggestion list. I was in a hurry, what can I say? :)

Thanks again.

My sister's dog has a stomache of steel.

I was visiting her and her husband for easter one year and while we went out to dinner we stuffed everyones easter baskets in the back room. The dog managed to get into the room, tear through the plastic, and ate every bit of chocolate. Even opened the boxes to the chocolate bunnies and ate those.

He sat around bloated for a day but was otherwise fine.

Kennels aren't just for training or bad behaviour. Lots of dogs love their kennels because they feel safe and "cave-like". My dog sleeps wedged in-between the toilet and the wall, which she considers to be a fair substitute.

Sounds like Rambo is doing great! And good for you for getting a shelter dog.

He seems happy with where he is now. He's made his comfort zone off to the side in the living room. He's got a blanket down that he likes to lay on. I tried moving it but he just went back to the same spot. Seems like he's made that spot his place and we're both happy with that. He seems to really like it outside too, so I think it'll work out well if I leave him out while I'm at work.

He doesn't seem much of a barker. No neighbors around to complain really, and pretty much everyone has outside dogs that bark at anyone walking down the street, strays, etc.

If he does start to bark a lot, any tips or a quick general guide on how to train him otherwise?

[–]Arntegio 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Teach him to speak and be quiet on command. Then make sure whenever the mailman comes by, treat. Loud kids? Treat. Next step is how to greet people - sit, look up, and be quiet. He should do this for every person that comes into your home - have people give him treats only when he does this. Don't allow folks to pet the dog when jumping on them, etc.

[–]larwk[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He does the greeting people already, lets hope it stays that way. He'll sniff them a bit but no barking, no jumping up on them, no licking.

I can't stress this enough. I got my dog (a fierce and terrible shih tzu) as a puppy and knew nothing about dogs. By coincidence I stumbled across Caesar Milan and was amazed by what I saw. I proceeded to watch intently (I DVR'd and then watched segments over and over) and apply the techniques to my dog. Its been 2 years and I get compliments about my dog all the time, I can leave him with friends and family and I don't worry, and he is really a happy little creature.

You've done the first step for Rambo, and I commend you. You saved his life. Now give his life meaning. Watch the first couple of seasons of The Dog Whisperer (available on Netflix) and understand his needs. Be religious about following "the rules" from the beginning and you will truly make a happy dog and a best friend for life.

tl;dr: Dog Whisperer

[–]logic11 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When we first got our dogs we didn't have a fucking clue what we were doing. They are great dogs, but we caused them some issues. When we found Caesar it made everything so much better.

[–]larwk[S] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay I just now linked Caesar Milan to the Dog Whisperer. There's been a lot of comments saying to read him. The half a dozen times I watched Dog Whisperer it just seemed retarded to me. I think most of the people on there are just clueless as hell. I can tell the difference in barks between Rambo wanting attention and needing to go outside. I know it's useless to try and scold him an hour after he poops inside. I have enough common sense to generally know what a dog is trying to tell me.

That being said, I do have a dog now. I'll watch a few episodes and at least give it a shot and see if I feel the same.

[–]kerspoon 1 point2 points ago

I would seriously recommend "Don't shoot the dog". It's not about dog training specifically but is a really easy to read guide to different training methods. I found it great and it does have some really fun games to play with a dog.

If a velociraptor invited both a T. Rex and brontosaurus to a dinner party, what would they have for cocktails?

[–]Grimjestor 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would say that they'd have the velociraptor dunked in liquor for cocktails.

Hooray! Rambo looks like a love. Our pup was in the shelter for a long time before we got her (something like 6 months and 4 different shelters?) She is the best dog ever and we constantly marvel that we were able to get her. I've had people screech to a halt in their cars while I'm walking her to ask where I got her, what breed she is. Shelter dogs ftw!

One thing we've learned about shelter dogs is some of them do get blue occasionally for no reason and you may see some behavior changes in about 6 weeks. We've been told this is normal and just wanted to give you a heads up. It's like they're remembering their former lives or something.

[–]larwk[S] 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He was a stray that animal control picked up. He was in a shelter for a month. I guess if an animal is there for more than a month they don't have room and have to put them down.

[–]majorkev 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

OK, that clears that up...

My new question is now, why was Rambo brought to the spotlight when this happens every day all over the place?

[–]larwk[S] 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not even sure who or why the original poster picked him. I was fixing to go to bed at the time it was posted but decided I wanted to do this. There were hardly any posts when I first said I'd get him, so maybe everyone else that looked after was inspired. I certainly didn't expect this much attention but I figured I'd provide a follow up since everyone was so interested.

You did a good thing. You can take him hunting when he's a little older.

[–]OhManThisIsAwkward 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I cannot tell you enough to GET HIM A CRATE. It doesn't matter how good he is right now. Dogs naturally adjust to crates. Mine hated his at first, and now he goes in there whenever he's tired or bored. He loves it. It gives your dog a truly safe place, and it keeps your house from getting destroyed one day when you're gone and he decides to try chewing on your most valuable possessions. Trust me on this. I had a few dogs growing up as a kid, and now I have one of my own. I used to help teach puppy classes and the most important point was crate training.

[–]larwk[S] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's been enough people saying similar that I think I will when I get a chance. He's spent the last month in a kennel so I'm sure he's used to them, but he might hate them because of it also. Thinking long term it would be a good idea to have one and have him used to being in one if the need arises.

[–]OhManThisIsAwkward 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It really has been helpful for me. My dog was a rescue and I got him when he was 12 weeks old. When I have to leave him with other people, I feel much more comfortable knowing that they can put him in his kennel when they're gone and he'll be safe and happy without getting into something that may be dangerous or harmful to him. As he's spent most of his life in a kennels, he's likely used to and comfortable in one. Don't wait too long, because he might forget how much he likes it.

Congrats on the dog, by the way. I didn't think I was prepared for a dog when I got mine. I visited a rescue shelter on a whim and when I saw him all matted and ugly and sad (he had the worst case of kennel cough I've ever seen), I knew I had to get him. I went back for him the next day, and it's the best decision I've ever made.

I'm almost afraid to have kids in the future, because I don't think I'll love them as much as I love my dog.

Adopted dogs, if you get them young, are extremely well-mannered in their new homes, because anything beats the pound. They're just happy to have a human to look after/have look after them. Best of luck to you and Rambo!

I adopt a cat and get mugged on the way home from doing so, and nobody on Reddit cares.

You adopt a dog when prompted by a popular post and you're at 400 karma in 8 hours.

Brilliant.

[–]larwk[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In my defense I said I would adopt it less than an hour after the link was posted, and there were very few upvotes or posts at the time. It might have had 20 upvotes at the time but for some reason appeared on my front page.

Getting mugged does suck though, but at least now I have a dog to protect me instead of a cat! (bring on the downvotes but getting mugged does suck, adopting any pet is awesome, and it is more likely a dog would try and protect you than a cat)
