He is a former SEOmoz guy, he knows his way around to game the system and draw traffic. I have seen some of his work during his time with Seomoz and also after he left them. I think he also designed the original Seomoz site (which was nicer than the current one). He also made a dating site (I think in one week) called mingle2 which he later sold it.

When he started making these comics, each comic had their own unique domain name and he would get them on the digg frontpage. Usually after digg frontpage the traffic was still coming in so he would link them to mingle2 website to drive traffic there. I think I have seen him link to other sites too, possibly his other clients (including an insurance company, but I could be wrong, that was more than a year ago).

The reason I am telling you this, because I think its important to put things in to perspective. He is an SEO guy, he has been around for some time and he knows how to "game" the system.

It doesn't take away the fact that some of his work is genuinely very good and funny and I have personally enjoyed them.

Edit: Some notes I could find after short googling

This guy is much much better than I will ever be. But its good to have some perspective and knowledge. He knows the system inside out, while you guys are being amazed by raptors he is doing his thing.

I am writing this from my disposable account, because I seriously fear this guy and I think he can do some harm to me if I post from my regular account. Because I use the same name for my other online identities.

By the way, Congratulations on the book deal. I actually bought your self-published comic last year.

Edit2: I am proud of myself knowing that I have such good memories. Remember the insurance company I mentioned earlier? Here is the digg submission by him to StateFarm Insurance website from 2007. More Gems, if you have the patience to digg around.

Last word before I am done with this comment. Please do take me seriously when I say this, Reddit is as much prone to "gaming" as digg. It might not be as easy, but it is most definitely possible. You really think when there is $100,000s potentially on the line in the future to get something viral someone won't invest on few dozen machines (renting unique ips is literally peanut money) with unique ips to get their story/business/blog/ in to more eyes? It happens all the time, now they are just good at it.

We like to believe that Reddit is not prone to gaming, because we love reddit. It can't possibly happen. If you have some background on how SEO viral marketing works, you would also think like me and be skeptical about certain things.

Food for thought.

Saydrah -1702 points-1701 points 6 months ago[-]

I upvoted you, but I think it's important to note that Reddit is a site that explicitly invites self-promotion when it's conducted in an appropriate manner. I personally don't find most of The Oatmeal's comics very funny (though the one about why he hates talking on the phone made me chuckle) but he's a friendly fellow who is nothing if not honest about that he's promoting his own sites and making money. He's also a decent cartoonist and seems to be a hard worker.

In short, if he's "gaming the system" by creating original content that people like and presenting it in an attractive manner that's not full of gratuitous ugly ads, more power to him. I'd rather have 100 like him on Reddit than the people who start a blog and post one stolen image at a time with five or six Google ads per page and then spam it to r/pics.

SirOblivious 3160 points3161 points 6 months ago* [-]

You should be fucking Ashamed of yourself! Let me explain to all the redditors here as to why.

You are upvoting this because its your job in 'social media" to submit links to reddit and other websites per your linkedin profile

On your linkedin you boast (or you did before you changed/removed it) about how you were tied in to the 'community" and had "pull"

The difference in the oatmeal is he/she actually produces something , art, comics

You, on the other hand, just submit what you are "PAID" to submit, how do we not know that you don't block other submissions in the spam filter while pushing yours to the top? I mean you are getting paid by hits I would assume, so clearly the motive is there

In short, you worm yourself into reddit , as mod, and then use this site like a fleshlight

An issue came up not long ago, about Saydrah. She gets paid to submit to reddit, and boasts to her employers about her position at reddit. Saying she has a large following and can get any content she wants to the front page of a website with millions of hits

This wouldn't be an issue except she is a mod, so she adds that to her resume, she is paid to submit to reddit , so how do we know she doesn't abuse it? No one check up on her

There are some moderators on Reddit that do submits and are engaged in less than exemplary behavior. This has become obvious over the time of the subreddit system, but Reddit doesn't care or doesn't have the time/energy to patrol the content guardians.

WHO SAYDRAH'S THE SAYDRAHS?

deeple 17 points18 points 6 months ago[-]

I know I'm missing the point here, but wouldn't it be an awesome job to just submit to reddit all day?

FreeCandy 41 points42 points 6 months ago[-]

Saydrah has moderation powers on reddit and is paid to advertise on reddit. That is a natural conflict of interest.

Saydrah exploits a system of developing "authentic" friendships, I'd imagine typically other advertisers, to upvote and downvote according to potential profit, critical commentary, and information censure. Not the strength of the actual submission or comment. This undermines the democratized goal of this particular link aggregator.

Personally I admire this woman's tenacity and career in general. It sounds very stimulating. Puppeteering the masses on social networks would be an interesting escapist power trip that pays the bills and then some. However I don't have the vampire mindset that tunes out my moral obligations to prevent shitting where I eat, nor subverting a community's democratized goal for information sharing and exchange and polluting it with vapid submissions while creating a flock of vapid friends that are seen as nothing more than a means to an end. The end of course being money.

SarahC 4 points5 points 6 months ago[-]

But does that group over-ride the other day-to-day voters of Reddit?

Wouldn't half of all Redditors need to be with the Media sites to ensure all the articles they want to have exposure get it through their own votes, and to remove the "noise" of the honest Redditors?

If people like Saydrah posted, and voting was natural - from interested Redditors, then I don't see it as too much of a problem (besides the possible censorship)... on the other hand... if Saydrah's associates are voting the articles she posts onto the front page, then that upsets the content based on user's interests...

OriginalSyn 6 points7 points 6 months ago[-]

michaelmacmanus 4 points5 points 6 months ago* [-]

But does that group over-ride the other day-to-day voters of Reddit?

You don't need a majority share to effect the speed at which a story or comment rises and falls. Investigate how Reddit works and it's weighting system on your own to figure out why.

Wouldn't half of all Redditors need to be with the Media sites to ensure all the articles they want to have exposure get it through their own votes, and to remove the "noise" of the honest Redditors?

No, not in the slightest.

If people like Saydrah posted, and voting was natural - from interested Redditors, then I don't see it as too much of a problem

Did you watch her interview? The voting isn't natural.

Regardless, she is a moderator of reddit who generates revenue to submit links to reddit.

As stated before, that is a blatant conflict of interest.

paulfromatlanta 20 points21 points 6 months ago[-]

Question: If she is open about doing this as part of her job - is it inherently wrong? It seems to me that disclosure is the first step to transparency. If her position is, as you say "well known", isn't that adequate disclosure and then we can decide whether to consider it when evaluating her posts. For me, that makes her posts much less valuable - but to each his own.

forcing_factor_99 33 points34 points 6 months ago* [-]

There's lots of them. It's been happening for ages, and on most social media websites.

E.g. How many people really believe the whole Internet spontaneously came together on the side of a corporation hiring a guerrilla/viral/astroturf marketing firm engaging in vandalism? Really?

http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/awd9j/013107_never_forget/

Virtually all negative comments get downvoted/moderated out:

http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/awd9j/013107_never_forget/c0jquft

If the marketing firms do a good first response, as they did extremely well in this case (lots of other guerilla marketing companies joined in -- bad press from something like this could kill the fledgling industry), this gives the appearance of unanimous Internet consensus. People tend to follow crowds -- almost no Democrats in Dallas or Republicans in Boston. At this point, it becomes obvious, popular truth that not only law enforcement messed up (which it did), but that false corollary that Turner/Interference Inc./the vandals did nothing wrong. The few people who think deeply and critically about what happened exist, but are few enough and don't care enough to overcome the swarm of marketers on reddit.

Now you've got a successful viral PR campaign (in this case, damage control, but in other cases, political, or sales, or whatever).

I picked one example, but this kind of stuff happens all the time. You've got to be critical of anything you see on the Internet, but especially of comparatively anonymous, gameable things like reddit, digg, and slashdot. If someone has money -- and not that much money -- they can create 100 accounts on each major social media website and keep them going. Given crowd dynamics, that's way more than enough for any viral marketing campaign. I know of no way to prevent this. I can hire 100 people in India, China, or Africa to post comments on social media, periodically promoting client firms, for an order of magnitude less cost than running a Superbowl ad.

This one is only special in that she was stupid enough to get caught.

firefruze 30 points31 points 6 months ago* [-]

I'm a little nervous to say this but here goes. I'm in the 'social media marketing' business. And here are my thoughts on this BS.

While I'm not directly involved in any campaigns at the moment (I'm more metrics side of things) when I worked more strategy side spamming reddit/dig/any other site NEVER , I repeat NEVER came to mind. Why because its spamming people and doesn't make any real business sense, all it is is cheap hits.

Hanging out with other Social Media marketers Reddit doesn't even come up on people's radar. What Social media is is the creation of space on the internet where people can talk about brands/ the management of a corporate brand on the web. While I encourage bloggers/websites to us a social link tool to make their content easier to share with people who legitimately want share their content gaming any social sites just so you can have massive traffic is a waste of time and money.

All in all Saydrah should take any mention of Social Media w/e off of her online profiles as that is completely not what she is. She is a SPAMMER! Not someone who connects companies and interested consumers together to create value (wow this sounds so corporate....I'm sorry) she's just looking to give websites a quick hit of traffic and exposure.

TL:DR Saydrah is a spammer. Social Media Marketing isn't gaming reddit.

bubsy87 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

First of all, gaming social media is less spamming and more astroturfing. It's editing Wikipedia to make your company look favorable. It's posting comments to give appearance of consensus in favor of your company in against your competitors. It's moderating comments against your employer. It's upvoting comments in favor of your employer. It's posting positive reviews on Amazon for your products and on discussion sites. It's not obvious in the way that spamming is -- users don't notice -- they just come off with the impression that people like your employer.

Second of all, there are certainly good actors, but there are plenty of bad ones too (the majority, in my opinion, but presumably not in yours, since it depends on where you draw the line for what is improper or sleazy -- mine is admittedly quite high). Is giving your product for free to reviewers and A-list bloggers who give good reviews, and withholding it from ones who give bad ones sleazy? I think so. On the other hand, it is mainstream industry practice, and almost all product reviews are positive as a result (e.g. in the past year, DPReview gave 1 Gold Award, 14 Highly Recommended, 3 Recommended, 1 Recommended with Reservations, and 1 Above Average, so "Above average" means bottom 0-5 percentile).

Third of all, "cheap hits" are just that -- cheap hits. Spammers spam because it works. It's a very low-cost way to bring traffic -- low cost enough that even with low conversion rates, it makes huge economic sense, if you don't care about reputation. If you do care about reputation, you go one of the steps up. Astroturfing.

TL:DR Firefruze might not be gaming reddit, but many people are. We may also have different standards for what proper behavior is, since it is more than just spamming.

firefruze 5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]

Thanks for the endorsement. I was a little nervous about saying I work in the Social media field thinking I may be labled a social media douchebag ( of which there are many). I hope all of these poor practices get weeded out in the next few years and that people who act poorly land flat on their face but we'll have to see. All I can say is that everyone needs to continually stay vigilant of what is being put in front of them as there will always be those who try to fool you or present you with garbage. There will always be a group of people in business/politics/whatever work that will put their own interests above the general good.

I've enjoyed her posts in /r/awww

But that image you link showing the frequency of posts - that has disturbed me. It's not in the spirit of finding a few nice links and posting them. It looks at best compulsive, at worst organised/deliberate.

I don't know what to think any more because she posts a lot of interesting stuff, but that image of the quantity and frequency of posts really reeks of wrongness.

[deleted] 25 points26 points 6 months ago[-]

Yeah that's not the posting of someone, at least to me, who enjoy sharing and talking about stuffs. It's impossible to find, read, and submit so much links so quickly.

TheUnixFamily 10 points11 points 6 months ago[-]

All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again.

I won't be satisfied until Saydrah voluntarily decides to leave Reddit once and for all. Forcing her out won't work, because she can always create another account.

Aerik 17 points18 points 6 months ago[-]

Your theory would explain why she created a subreddit that is a prime example of the mainstream media "enlightened middle" scam (accuse two groups of being extremes, pull together a group of 'moderates', refuse to uninvite guests despite deplorable statements and behavior, insist that honest active-voiced comments are arrogant, and praise only the language of the co-opting concern troll) called 'equality'...

TheLoneHoot 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

Wow - I never even considered that sort of scam shit going on. That would sure explain a lot of stuff I've seen in the past.

Wow, just wow.

Quote - (And that's all I have to say about that. I love you girls, but I'm disappointed. Not because I'm surprised that 90% of Reddit is shitheads (I've always been here for the 10%) but because I'm surprised that Digg--of all sites--is a place where posting personally identifying information information about someone for the purpose of harassing them gets your account deleted (see: Olivia whatserface, AverageDigger/SouljaBoySucks), while apparently on Reddit it's just fine.) I'm not going away, it takes a better intervention than that to break my reddit addiction, but I'm disheartened.

citricsquid 52 points53 points 6 months ago[-]

I have to agree. There are people who game the system and do it in the most awful and inappropriate way possible, but I would go as far as to say that GBF doesn't "game" the system at all, he knows how to use Reddit (and Digg) to his advantage and does that while rewarding us with clever and unique content.

More power to him, even if he's not got here through 100% luck, hell I think it's even more impressive that he used his knowledge and understanding of "the system" to get here. We could all learn a thing or two from him.

SirOblivious 22 points23 points 6 months ago[-]

The person you are agreeing with games the system most of all

citricsquid 15 points16 points 6 months ago[-]

oh I know, but that doesn't make her point any less valid :-D

SirOblivious 24 points25 points 6 months ago[-]

She is mod as well, you know this right? and she gets paid to submit to reddit.

So you could post a picture " funny lol cats"

And she could post "funny lol cats" but she is paid and a mod, she could put yours in the spam filter and promote her own right? I mean , she is being paid to do so

kleinbl00 21 points22 points 6 months ago[-]

Fuck - I need me a piece of this!

citricsquid 14 points15 points 6 months ago[-]

I know and I've commented on how much I dislike what Saydrah does before and how I think it's pretty lame, but again that doesn't make what she says here any less valid or wrong, even if she does have a conflict of interest!

lolinyerface 20 points21 points 6 months ago[-]

As I was reading the OP, this is what I was thinking. He is using social networking sites, thats part of the purpose of them. I've seen Reddit used this way for many things, "Hey guys, check out my kid being AWESOME", "Hey guys, check out my cat, sleepin!", or "Hey guys, check out this thing I made that is AWESOME!".

Nothing wrong with that. I'm sure Randall at XKCD appreciates his work being mentioned on Reddit/Digg everytime he posts a new comic.

IOIOOIIOIO 9 points10 points 6 months ago[-]

I think the difference is that Randall at XKCD doesn't mention his work on Reddit/Digg every time he posts a new comic.

Even if The Oatmeal is entertaining, the shameless self-promotion is a bit of a turn off.

NotSoToughCookie 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

I've seen him being accused of creating multiple accounts to comment on his submissions. Comments like "This genuinely made me laugh." and 10 others just like it appearing near instantly when he submits. Basically, preempting a hive mind mentality. If this is the case, then underhanded tactics like that are definitely not welcome here.

After someone pointed it out, I started to notice it myself. Many of the first comments on his submissions were not 'reddit like'. They looked like comments that belong on other social media sites. Even more surprisingly, they were upvoted to questionable levels.

jerkmag 5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]

It's not anything fishy. He just posts the link to his twitter, and his followers go to it right away. There's nothing wrong with that.

NotSoToughCookie 8 points9 points 6 months ago[-]

Well that's border line spam then. If he is using his twitter feed to tell people to come HERE and upvote his articles instead of linking directly to his site, that's definitely gaming the system in a way reddit disapproves of. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

LoveGiantBatFart 21 points22 points 6 months ago* [-]

I respectfully disagree. A manufactured viral marketing is still a form of spamming. You (not you specifically) are being duped in to thinking the hive mind likes it, so you must like it too!

If people are creating GOOD quality content, they should be awarded, regardless of whether it was self-promotion or not. How else is somebody supposed to start something? Even moot over at 4chan had to post his links in the Something Awful forums. Not everyone has super uber advertising budgets.

The3rdWorld 8 points9 points 6 months ago[-]

if i've been tricked into thinking that a lot of people on reddit like bacon then i'll be amazed - As a lifelong vegetarian i've been very aware of the job flesheaters take in think slices of fried pig, actually it's the most common reason that new vegetarians lapse and certainly alongside steak the most common thing i will be told i'm 'missing out on' - people not just on reddit really do like bacon a lot.....

I of courses don't like bacon myself, i also fund much of the oatmeal stuff to be contrived and worn humor however some pieces have been very funny (e.g. printers) - when I hear people talking about bacon i think, wow those guys love the bacon. When i see a link to the oatmeal i might click if i wanna see light humor which for a change is actually (fairly) original content - I might laugh and click around on the site, i might meh and return to reddit for redirection.....

I see generally a few links to each really good oatmeal article and maybe one or two for the less exciting ones, exactly what i would expect on reddit - I know that when a piece is put up the oatmeal post links to digg and reddit, nothing wrong with that - i know they have a marketing strategy it's obvious from the very first time you see the page, the easy to remember name and catchy idiosyncratic design set it apart from much of the web - it's a flashy dresser in a gray suit boardroom. They are screaming out, I WANT TO ENTERTAIN YOU, is that such a bad thing? All they offer is an honest product, a page of truth or wild fancy which may or may not amuse you...

I know what sort of mood i should be in to click an Oatmeal Article or for that matter an Onion article... The basically free service we have been getting has so far asked nothing of us, we are entirely free to enjoy or ignore it as we are free to skipover the endless drama threads, my friend made, my daughter whore, your religion believes, reposted reposts and all the other endless wash of inane content...

Nothing forces you to like what others like is all i'm saying, some things are popular and these create a statistical sweet spot we jokingly call 'hive mind' - my being tricked into thinking the oatmeal is more popular than it is hasn't effected the world at all, if the gaming theory is correct then maybe some poor published hoping to jump onto an internet bandwagon will make a loss on a few books - i highly doubt it because as i'm sure most people will actually honestly agree the content in the oatmeal is much funnier than most the big selling coffee table books. Books of this nature are sold by putting them on display in shops, the customer pics them up opens them randomly and if they laugh at something they might buy it - i doubt very much that anyone will think, hmmm this books doesn't look like something i would enjoy but i seem to remember reddit liked it so i'll buy one anyway....

The whole point of reddit is to create a sense of community with shared interests, links and memes. If gaming the system means using it in exactly the way it was designed to be used then I suppose GiantBatFart is gaming the system.

p.s. You're not some whistle blower who has uncovered the dark side of GiantBatFart, the guy has fully admitted all of this in his IAMA.

LoveGiantBatFart 23 points24 points 6 months ago[-]

I didn't claim to be a whistle blower. I read and participated (with my real handle) in his AMA with questions. He also mentioned in his blog he worked for seomoz. Having information is worth nothing if you don't know how to connect the dots.

If you are glad the way things are, good for you.

bg2500 12 points13 points 6 months ago[-]

The first thing I thought when I read this submission is that this guy really knows his stuff when it comes to promoting himself online, especially if he can promote himself to the reddit community. We are not an easy demographic to capture.

The second thing that I thought is that if he could apply the same humor and understanding to the demographic my company sells to, he would be a great addition to our team, since we just created a SEO position.

Saydrah, I am a bit more biased though in that I love most of his work and find it hilarious. But that is just me. So, take this comment with a grain of salt.

Literally 47 points48 points 6 months ago[-]

Reddit, not an easy demographic to capture?

You include the occasional narwhal or bacon meme, address reddit as if you're talking to them specifically and make sure they know that you, the person who submitted the content also made the content, (dear reddit, this is something I made), reddit are suckers for anything that makes them feel like part of a community or a cool club. If you remind them that you are also an avid redditor, they love it too.

Say something that is generally agreed upon in reddit, but allow for reddit to forget that it is the dominant ideology (DAE think Christianity is silly, Fox news are sensationalist liars, Steam is better than a different form of digital distribution, and Australian censorship laws are bad?).

It is incredibly easy to capture the reddit demographic, you just have to start off on the right foot.
