[–]twillymarsden 4 points5 points ago

I honestly can't believe that Bad Brains were only mentioned once. Everyone needs to upvote this here recommendation list.

[–]soundsinspace 2 points3 points ago

OP: Here are 10+ albums that I think would be a good core foundation for a punk rock collection. I guess my bias is towards American Hardcore bands. If anyone want to add any suggestions feel free.

  1. Bad Brains - Bad Brains ROIR Tapes.
  2. Black Flag - Live in 84'
  3. Descendents - Milo Goes to College
  4. Dead Kennedy's - In God We Trust Inc.
  5. Misfits - Walk Among Us
  6. Germs- (GI)
  7. Adolescents - Self Titled
  8. Minor Threat - Complete Discography
  9. Bad Religion - Against the Grain
  10. G.B.H. - City Baby Attacked by Rats
  11. T.S.O.L - Beneath the Shadows
  12. Offspring - Self Titled
  13. The Vandals - When in Rome Do as The Vandals
  14. X - Los Angeles
  15. Social Distortion - Mommy's Little Monster
  16. Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
  17. Fear - The Record

Pretty good list I must say. So many records that changed my life.

[–]ext2012 1 point2 points ago

Saw this after I wrote mine. Good taste.

[–]Operation_Ivy 8 points9 points ago

I would recommend starting with the genre's first wave of artists, ex. The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Damned, Ramones. Use Last.fm to find the most popular tracks by artists like these and you'll be hooked in no time.

If you have indie inclinations, you may want to try Wire or Television. If you have a need for speed, try Minor Threat or Black Flag.

Of course, Operation Ivy is the natural choice for someone coming from ska.

Currently what's playing in the background as I browse Reddit.

The Descendents, ALL, Husker Du, Black Flag, the Ramones, The Minutemen, The Replacements, the Misfits, Armchair Martian

[–]soundsinspace 1 point2 points ago

Husker Du is what's up!

[–]dbqpdb 14 points15 points ago

[–]tomswartz07 5 points6 points ago

Fuckin Bad Religion. My first ever punk experience.

[–]platypuspracticus 2 points3 points ago

My favorites: I Want Something More, I Want to Conquer the World, Against the Grain, American Jesus. Yes, I'm totally biased to No Control and Against the Grain.

[–]dbqpdb 0 points1 point ago

And for good reason.

[–]platypuspracticus 0 points1 point ago

Last albums with Pete Finestone on drums. I actually like him better than Bobby or Brooks in the context of BR.

[–]soundsinspace 0 points1 point ago

Those are their two best albums hands down.

[–]robjensen 11 points12 points ago

Operation Ivy. NoFX. Old Man Markley (it's bluegrass punk).

[–]kendostickball 2 points3 points ago

I would have also said these three, especially NoFX. Also, Crass is a must. Reading about their exploits is also just as awesome as their music.

[–]Koresh93 0 points1 point ago

I've heard of extreme metalheads getting into NOFX simply because they are funny, but they learn to appreciate them later on.

NOFX is definitely entry level punk, but regardless, they'e always been one of my favorite bands.

[–]mongo11 1 point2 points ago

Yes! Op Ivy is the shit.

[–]WinterInJapan 5 points6 points ago

Andrew Jackson Jihad.

[–]GirlsSmellGood 3 points4 points ago

great question. As posted by "operation_ivy" pointed out, the first wave guys are a great choice but for something a little more modern, i'd recommend Off With Their Heads or The Bouncing Souls. Both bands are very listener friendly and fun. From there, its up to what you like...politically inclined? try Bad Religion (my favorite), Anti-Flag or even Rise Against. Darker and moodier? Try The Misfits. A little more new school and metal? Check out Pour Habit. Punk-esque/punk roots but not necessarily all out punk? Frank Turner or Gaslight Anthem.

wanna go straight to balls out?? Minor Threat, Against Me!, NOFX

and if its Ska based, check out older Mighty Mighty Bosstones. A lot of people only know their one radio hit but their older stuff (Devil's Night Out" and Don't know how to Party") are fucking excellent

[–]shavengopher 4 points5 points ago

If you want to use ska as an entry to punk check out choking victim, related bands like leftover crack and the star fucking hipsters are interesting too. Also, don't discount country before you hear hank III.

[–]xjudgex 4 points5 points ago

Try Rancid's "...And Out Come the Wolves" and "Life Won't Wait". "Wolves" was a bit more street punk with a few ska songs mixed in, but "Life Won't Wait" was a much more varied album. It includes two members of Operation Ivy, a seminal ska-punk band from the late 80s.

[–]ihatestairs 7 points8 points ago

Against Me!, Hot Water Music, Latterman, The Lawrence Arms and The Descendents.

[–]Hurling_Crowbirds 2 points3 points ago

festpunk

[–]Junglesass 0 points1 point ago

FUCK YEAH! I was wait for someone to mention Against Me and HWM! "NOT ONE MORE WORD TONIGHT!!"

[–]musickf 0 points1 point ago*

Bad Religion - The Empire Strikes First

Oxymoron - The Pack is Back

Rancid - ...And Out Come The Wolves

Operation Ivy - Self titled

Green Day - Dookie

Less Than Jake - Hello Rockview

The Clash - The Clash

Anti-Nowhere League - We Are the League

Swingin' Utters - A Juvenile Product of the Working Class

Cock Sparrer - Shock Troops

That should get you into it *edit: spacing

[–]goodguyatheist 0 points1 point ago

misfits, bad religion star fucking hipsters and left over crack (last two have some ska songs and same singer

[–]mongo11 2 points3 points ago

My suggestions:

Operation Ivy

Lagwagon

Descendents

The Misfits

Propagandhi

Also, if you are a fan of hardcore music, you should check out Choking Victim or Leftover Crack. People call their genre of music Crack Rock Steady, and it's like a combination of hardcore, crust, and pop punk along with ska and some reggae influences.

Also, as far as hardcore punk:

Minor Threat

Bad Brains

Gorilla Biscuits

[–]sgguitar88 1 point2 points ago

What kind of ska do you listen to? Less than Jake, Mad Caddies, NoFx, Suicide Machines, Choking Victim, and Streetlight Manifesto are all legit punk/ska bands. Check out the whole Southern California skate punk scene.

From there you can pretty much pick a direction and go with it. Bad Religion and AFI (esp. The Art of Drowning) are pretty accessible. Or you can back to more traditional British punk or 80s-90s American east coast punk like a lot of people here are recommending.

[–]tomswartz07 -1 points0 points ago

Early Rise Against and Millencolin are pretty awesome.

Less than Jake is pretty good too, but that crosses the line into Ska Punk.

Also, Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies are great if youre just getting into the scene.

[–]AbsurdityAtItsFinest 0 points1 point ago

First of all, Operation Ivy. It IS ska + punk vocals.

Then, other things like Rancid, Sex Pistols, Clash, Dead Kennedys (if you're willing to feel kinda bad about everything in word), and also the Adolescents. That's all pretty entry level and the stuff that got me into punk. The Clash especially, as they aren't too edgy and offputing, unlike certain other bands.

[–]PhilipkWeiner 1 point2 points ago

I'd start where I started, with the old Fat Wreck Chords compilations. Survival of the Fattest is canon.

Edit: comma

[–]uberscheisse 0 points1 point ago

The 1989 album Snuff Said by Snuff is one of the most accessible punk records ever. Good poppy song structures that'll catch your ear, but good and hard in spots.

Now You Don't Remember

[–]DiscoRage 0 points1 point ago

If you like punkish vocals, check out None More Black. I think Jason Shevchuk's vocals are pretty unique.

From their first album:

Trivia

  • Many of the song titles reference Seinfeld including "Everyday Balloons", "Dinner's for Suckers", "Never Heard of Corduroy", "Risk Management", "Bizarro Me", "Nods to Nothing" and "Wishing There Were Walkways".

  • "The Ratio of People to Cake" is a reference to Office Space.

  • "Ice Cream With The Enemy" is a reference to D2: The Mighty Ducks

[–]Beeristheanswer 0 points1 point ago

So far I only see lots of the newer wave American punk bands being listed here, I suggest you check out some of the more classic styles as well:

Stiff Little Fingers - Straw Dogs

Circle Jerks - Live Fast Die Young

The Exploited - Son Of A Copper

[–]j3107 0 points1 point ago

Buy some compilations. There are plenty to choose from, and I'm sure there'll be at least a few bands on each one that you'll enjoy. Look out for anything from the Punk-O-Rama, Give 'Em the Boot, or Fat Music series.

[–]MrUnappropriate 0 points1 point ago

GBH

[–]imacultclassic 0 points1 point ago

Some decent and recent punk bands are

Lawrence Arms Banner Pilot Smoke or Fire Cobra Skulls The Wonder Years (yeah yeah whatever)

The bands that got me into punk are: Bouncing Souls Mellincollin NOFX Less than Jake Lagwagon Bad Religion No Use for a Name Rancid Strung Out Saves the Day (yeah yeah I know)

[–]Kappers 1 point2 points ago

My suggestion? Go back and play the first 5 Tony Hawk games.

[–]bfrank72 1 point2 points ago

I dig Max Levine Ensemble to cure my pop-punk fix. Plus you can get most of their stuff for free here. I'd recommend "Ok Smartypants" if you need to pick just one.

[–]oedrex1 1 point2 points ago

Screeching Weasel, NOFX...I really like The Get Up Kids, The Weakerthans and Jets to Brazil, but I know some will argue they're more indie, less punk...but I'd say it's debatable.

[–]oedrex1 1 point2 points ago

And Fugazi. Don't forget about Fugazi.

[–]TOHCskin 0 points1 point ago

Night Birds are awesome. Opened for them in the spring, they were really nice dudes.

[–]ext2012 1 point2 points ago

Ramones, Black Flag, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Sex Pistols and BAD BRAINS!

I'd suggest some Johnny Cash to change that anti-Country music attitude you have there.

I'll do my best to keep this brief. If you are just starting out with punk, I'd suggest all of these albums:

  1. The Clash - London Calling
  2. The Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
  3. Ramones - Ramones
  4. The Stooges - All three of their albums really, but Raw Power specifically.
  5. Circle Jerks - Group Sex
  6. Black Flag - The First Four Years and Damaged
  7. Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegtables, Plastic Surgery Disasters and Bedtime for Democracy
  8. Germs - (MIA): The Complete Anthology
  9. Minor Threat - Complete Discography
  10. Fugazi - 13 Songs
  11. Husker Du - Zen Arcade
  12. X - Los Angeles
  13. Bad Brains - Rock for Light
  14. Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime

If you are interested in checking out some modern punk bands I highly suggest Refused, Fucked Up, Screaming Females, White Lung, OFF! and Trash Talk.

Mr T Experience. Get: Love is Dead, Revenge is Sweet and So Are You, and Night Shift at the Thrill Factory.
