Rick Santorum: I will not cut the defense budget, I will cut food stamps (self.politics)
submitted 1 year ago by emr1028
Literally the first answer of the debate...
[–]ScrubJay 1396 points1397 points1398 points 1 year ago
Right on, Santorum! Jesus loved military might and despised the hungry poor too.
[–]LettersFromTheSky 904 points905 points906 points 1 year ago
Yep, Jesus turned away the starving, the poor and the sick - I totally remember reading that in the Bible. Oh wait.....
I know, this is what Rick is talking about: Supply Side Jesus

[–]FermiAnyon 68 points69 points70 points 1 year ago
You don't seem to understand... if we starve everyone, Jesus will have to come back and turn the loaves to fishes or something again! It's a brilliant strategy!

Oh that's clever.
It's like an osmotic Jesus gradient.

Don't forget the Golden Rule! This is how it went, right?
"Do unto others what you want done unto you...unless your Muslim/gay/poor/sexually-'promiscuous', then it doesn't count lol"
-Jesus of Nazereth
EDIT: I will say that I have no qualms with Christianity/Jesus. In fact, that the Golden Rule is a perfect way to live your life, and almost every religion (if not all) mention something to the same extent. But leave it up to intolerant people to both love and hate people based on same religion or teachings. :/
[–]TooManyAlts 135 points136 points137 points 1 year ago
Do unto others before they can do unto you.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you... said the rapist"
[–]Irish_Whiskey 82 points83 points84 points 1 year ago
At one of the prior Republican debates Ron Paul brought up the Golden Rule in the context of foreign policy, and got massively booed by the audience. Not because he was quoting their faith, but because they disagreed with it.
Religions change over time. Both the text and interpretations of Christianity are very different from the past. But even in the modern context, conservative Americans really are off in a sect of their own. Supply-side Jesus with his militarism, capitalism, and American nationalism has nothing to do with the character of Jesus, or how he was previously interpreted.
[–]latitnow 44 points45 points46 points 1 year ago
This is so true, especially your last paragraph. As a European who was raised in a Christian family I often wonder if we read the same bible and if we're talking about the same Jesus as Americans. Basically what church told me is "be a (morally) good person", that's it. I'm not religious anymore but I don't think it's a bad thing.
[–]Supernumerary 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago
In many -- not all -- parts of the US, the Bible is taken rather literally. Stories told in it aren't moral lessons conveyed through metaphor and characters more appropriate to the times, but actual events which happened to actual people. I realize that's not behavior exclusive to the US, but we have Christianity in so many flavors over here: Catholicism, Southern Baptism, et al, that oftentimes it seems like the message of 'be a good person' gets lost in 'Jesus will be back any day now, really, He only went out for cigarettes and a pint of milk.'

Santorum's hits keep on coming.
And his bit about contraceptives. When called on it by King, he waxes on about the moral fiber of society and how we have "kids having kids." Is he intending to imply that contraceptives are creating this environment? That if contraceptives are removed, things will be fine and dandy?
He's as clueless as the Pope about AIDS and Africa.
[–]kingguru 25 points26 points27 points 1 year ago
Eh, so contraceptives make people have children. I'm pretty sure I learned the exact opposite in sex education when I was younger.

Every dollar invested in food stamps results in a $1.73 increase in GDP, making it a spectacularly reliable form of economic stimulus. Unfortunately, it involves helping poor people, so ... yeah fuck that.
Edit: For anyone who is interested in reading more. It's a report by Moody's Analytics, a subsidiary of the credit rating service.
[–]IMadeYourDrink 85 points86 points87 points 1 year ago
Source? I'd like to be able to point that out to other peoples.
[–]exoray 242 points243 points244 points 1 year ago
I also wanted to know and I found this:
When Moody’s Analytics assessed different forms of stimulus, it found that food stamps were the most effective, increasing economic activity by $1.73 for every dollar spent. Unemployment insurance came in second, at $1.62 and most tax cuts yielded a dollar or less.
[–]hiccupstix 82 points83 points84 points 1 year ago
Yup. And I'm sure Santorum would find some way to paint the subsidiary of one of the largest private credit rating corporations on the planet as a fringe extremist crackpot left-wing hate group.
[–]Zanhana 92 points93 points94 points 1 year ago*
Here's the thing you're not understanding. $1.73 is not more than less than a dollar. That's a lie the educated, leftist elite has been trying to sell to us for years, and the American people aren't going to stand for it any longer.
EDIT: I knew I should have used that sarcasm punctuation mark.

[–]apteryx_274 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
you're right, GHW Bush tried to ban porn- that's why you see some 80s porn but not in the late 80s until the early 90s. Anything from 89-91 is all no-penetration, but the natural tits give it away. Big tits went to small tits which then went to fake tits. All because of the 'moral majority'...

Are you a porn historian? Cause that would be an awesome job.

I'd say the media of our culture has a lot to do with it. When the most watched 'news' station of a country does nothing but instill notions of xenophobia, war, self-entitlement, and isolationism...it has a horrible effect on the general populace, or at least a good chunk of them. I know Hitler comparisons are done to death, but it's important to remember that he took over Germany's media during a liberal period of time in that nation's history (reconstruction after WWI) to entrench people in fear and 'nationalism'...years and years of this led to his rise to power. You can't fool all of the people all of the time, but if you fool the right ones, the rest will fall behind..that kind of thing.
[–]jrizos 15 points16 points17 points 1 year ago
There is a huge Christian Theocracy boiling up in America...it won't ever reach critical mass to really sway elections, but it causes this thing to occur in primaries.
[–]Karmaze 25 points26 points27 points 1 year ago
How did he make it this far? Easy. I'll explain.
The Tea Party movement is the chicken, and not the egg, and generally it's that, although the movement itself is pretty much dead, the ideology behind it at this point is what is carrying the Republican party.
In a nutshell, it comes down to what some people call "Neo-Calvinism". This is the concept that if God can intervene in our world, then he's picking winners and losers, and as such the winners and losers are all justified. Reward the rich, punish the poor, because that's what God wants. Of course, some people do have similar beliefs in non-theistic fashion, but it's really the theistic source of it that gives it a wide audience.
The ideology of Jesus is an afterthought to the reality, power, and glory of God. Punishing the poor and raising the rich become a testament to the power and glory of God.
The Tea Party was a coming out party of sorts for this growing ideology, which has been really brewing for the last few decades. Most people don't realize/forget that the Tea Party movement was really started by an on-air rant by a business "journalist" who was complaining about a proposed plan to assist underwater homeowners. (I.E. owed more than their home was worth and were getting pressure from the banks due to it)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp-Jw-5Kx8k
I.E. the losers who didn't deserve help.
So yeah. It's this Neo-Calvinism/Tea Party mentality that's taken over the Republican party to the core. And it's really sticky, because of the natural strong theistic roots. (If you believe in an interventionist god, quite frankly, these sorts of political beliefs are probably the most obvious and easiest result) And if you think this is wrong, and it's a bad thing, then you HAVE to get out and vote, and get out and vote actively against them (I.E. Vote Democratic)
The Republican party is a symbol right now of this theistic privilege, power, and glory. And until that symbol is destroyed TO THE GROUND, it's going to keep on spreading and getting worse.
[–]Wulvaine 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
An international panel of scientists are seeking research funding for the hypothesis that Rick Santorum has the most punchable face in the world. The evidence is strong, and suggests that even brief exposure to his facial features, voice, and opinions elicits production of a chemical called PH-5 in the brain that causes uncontrollable rage. Early trials have been conducted, and the results were promising; sets of ten individuals were shown a video of Santorum discussing his political stances, and an average of 8.7 out of 10 subjects punched holes in their monitors.
The panel is led by New York neuroscientist Martin Hendricks, MD/PhD, who has been digging at the roots of biological aggression for over 19 years.
"We've had this particular experimental framework in place for several years, but up until now, we were lacking a universal target," says Dr. Hendricks. "For a while, we thought we might be on to something with Spencer Pratt, but he was most likely doomed to transience from the start, and we weren't able to complete our tests before he became completely irrelevant. But Santorum is just an incredible specimen. I've never seen anyone who evokes such visceral rage so consistently."
Santorum's face is so potent, in fact, that Hendricks and his team have to be careful not to look directly at any of the portraits they use for testing.
"It's a very volatile environment, as is to be expected whenever you're working with such dangerous materials," explains Dr. Hendricks. "We have to wear protective equipment. It's very surreal to be surrounded by men and women, academics and doctors at the height of our field, all wearing special blinders to avoid catching a dangerous dose of Santorum in their peripheral vision and heavily padded gloves just in case an exposure somehow occurs."
If the funding goals are met, Hendricks hopes to be able to study the effects with a larger sample size.
"Some people do seem to be immune, and we've found that very often these people have a remarkably high punchability quotient themselves. We'd like to study the relationship behind this correlation."
Hendricks would also like to examine Santorum in person, though the feasibility of this is in question due to an array of complications.
"I would be interested in going straight to the source, as it were, yes. However, in addition to the difficulty of access, there's also the matter of safety. Even still images very quickly produce levels of PH-5 high enough to override basic motor function in most subjects, and audio/video representations multiply that tenfold. Actually getting that close to the real thing could be very risky, especially if he were to speak. It's entirely possible that that kind of raw, direct proximity exposure could result in brain hemorrhaging."
Despite the danger involved, there are clear benefits to be found in Dr. Hendricks' research; he believes that it may be possible to harness Santorum's condition.
"If we can isolate the part of the brain that produces PH-5 and come to understand why, there are all kinds of practical applications for it, not least of which is energy. PH-5 reactions cause the brain to produce a unique electromagnetic signature we're calling the wide tetrafaltric wave. One of my colleagues is working on a receiver that could intercept and amplify these waves and convert them into electricity. If his calculations are correct, we may be on the cusp of 100% clean, infinitely sustainable energy. His numbers suggest that a single person looking at an image of Rick Santorum accompanied by a quote (both carefully filtered to avoid dangerous exposure, of course) for just five minutes produces enough WTF waves to power a quarter of New York City for an hour. Santorum and WTF energy may be the energy source of the future."

Fuck this. Food stamps are the only way I can adequately feed myself (as in something more than nutritionally poor Top Ramen and I don't care what Maruchan fans say, you cannot survive on that.) I don't buy any meat or junk food with my stamps and the $130 I qualify for doesn't even last through the month. I work 25 hours a week at minimum wage, so I make about $720 a month. Without student loans and food stamps, I would be living off of 40 fucking dollars a month after all of my bills. This means NO rainy day fund, and according to DHS, I make too much for state health insurance, but don't work enough to get insurance from my employer, so just one medical emergency and BOOM: homeless, cat in the shelter, life=ruined.
What needs to change are food stamps policies. Having to work 5 days a week is seriously hurting my performance as a student. Before I was hired, I had a 3.8 GPA, I now have a 3.1. This pretty much guarantees that I will not graduate with my RN license on time. However, I HAVE to work to get food benefits.
Full time student, no job= No benefits (which means living off of about $2,000 a term [about 4 months] for me at least.)
Working full-time for minimum wage= No benefits.
Doing neither= Maximum benefits.
Seriously?!

[–]angelofdeathofdoom 40 points41 points42 points 1 year ago
also, why does everyone have a hard on for cutting taxes? I get people hate paying their taxes, but isn't that one of the primary income sources for the government?
With such a massive debt, shouldn't we raise some taxes?
[–]WingFinger 31 points32 points33 points 1 year ago
It has worked so well over the past decade...
[–][deleted] 58 points59 points60 points 1 year ago

There are a whole lot of poor people right now. I don't see cutting their food supply as a winning platform. Just saying...
[–]markca 27 points28 points29 points 1 year ago
GOP doesn't care.
[–]warehousedude 28 points29 points30 points 1 year ago
They need hungry desperate people for their war machine. They care, alright... but not about the things that sane people care about.
[–]adolfojp 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago
Don't be so sure about it. I remember a lot of poor people rallying against socialized health care.

And then he will blame it on class warfare.
[–]bobsomeguy 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
Unemployment among the poor is much worse than the national numbers indicate. If they think people are going to be content to just starve to death in the streets, they are fucking retarded. These people are going to start wrecking stuff if they can't feed themselves or their families anymore.
[–]NoxiousNick 88 points89 points90 points 1 year ago
Food stamps are the only reason my girlfriend can live reasonably. Fuck this.
[–]Dan_K 28 points29 points30 points 1 year ago

[–]MarlonBain[] 48 points49 points50 points 1 year ago
25% of people on food stamps claim they do not get benefits from the government. So, they may never realize they are on food stamps.
[–]EagleFalconn 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
Who the fuck do they think is paying for that? Do they live in a delusional world where if you're hungry someone will anonymously mail you a card to pay for food? God dammit people that dumb shouldn't be allowed to recieve food stamps.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I actually agree. I think that you must be able to correctly identify the source of your government benefits before you receive them. Something like a quiz with one question: "Who supplies X?", where X is the benefit is in question.

I am on food stamps. I am an adult who works full time for less than minimum wage because I am passionate about helping the homeless. I work in a youth homeless shelter, providing support for teenage runaways. I graduated from a good, private, 4 year college. To give you an idea of my monthly budget, half of my money goes towards rent. 1/4 of what's left goes towards gas money, and 1/8 goes towards utilities. At the end of the month, I am left with 1/8 of my paycheck. I need food stamps to survive, and the stigma that we welfare beneficiaries are uneducated and unemployed is not true.

[–]Thermoelectric 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
It's funny that the religious right is pro-christian and yet they feel like poor people are the problem?
Didn't Jesus help the poor, wasn't Jesus a fucking socialist, why the hell are they condemning the poor against their religion and yet claiming it's out of dignity for the economy.
It goes against everything their religion claims, yet they proclaim it well deserved to devour the poor's standard of living. They're everything they stand against, hypocrites of the century.
[–]tamrix 24 points25 points26 points 1 year ago
Alright guys this isn't funny anymore.
I know Santorum is going to lose in the end but when he loses, you guys will call it a victory. This guys so bad he shouldn't even be in the race and you guys call this freedom and democracy!
Do something to fix your fucked up country and get your real free vote back!
[–]auryn0151 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Well, the fact that any idiot can run IS freedom and democracy. The fact that so many people agree with him shows democracy isnt always the greatest system.
[–]ZorakIsStained 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago

Because he believes in Jesus.
[–]just_a_quantum_dot 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
I'm starting to suspect that The Frothy One's campaign is being run by imbecilic yes-men. Any sane contender would have at least one person around whose job it is to be brutally honest. You know, something like this: "Look, Rick, we've got to talk. Your political career has gone down the toilet since you lost the last election in Pennsylvania, the 18-25 demographic hates your guts, males 18-35 are just waiting for the inevitable gay scandal, you are incredibly unpopular among women of all ages, the first thing that comes up when people google your name is a website that redefined your name to something wholly unsavory, and even if you are portrayed favorably in the press it is only when compared to a filthy rich stoic who will tell you whatever you want to hear to get your vote, or a fat adulterer who lost all relevance ten years ago. Maybe it's time to stop."
[–]gl3bm 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
Does anyone have a link to this? the actual video or quote of him saying this?
[–]personofshadow 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Jesus hated the hungry so much that he gave them food so that they weren't hungry anymore. He wiped out the hungry, Santorum is just trying to do the same thing with a different approach.
[–]Tombug 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Who would Jesus starve ?
[–]CheapBeer 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago

For as bad as all of this is, all of the crazy ass bile that comes out of this guy's mouth, can you imagine being Mittens right now?
He must lay awake at night thinking, "I'm losing that THAT guy?"
[–]emr1028[S] 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago

[–]obviousoctopus 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Is it a rule for all republican presidential candidates to be certifiably crazy? Are these people human? What are the strategists, the party leaders, the ones saying "these are the best of the best, let's put them forward" really thinking? Are they really that crazy-stupid or is this some weird Machiavellian chess game?
[–]EH1987 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago

[–]HAHno 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
I am, I guess middle class. I have a roof over my head but I still rely on oil assistance and food stamps. I know a lot of people game the system. I run my own business and do O.K. at it but still get bent over at tax time. Keep our military at home where they belong.
I know that all wars are fought for greed, power, land, idealism and resources. We have a great potential as a nation. Use the fact that the U.S. has many nationalities and great minds too move forward mankind. Can we please use them?
Edit. Almost a huge rant.
[–]trippingwalrus 28 points29 points30 points 1 year ago
You are not middle class if you are on food stamps.

[–]bejeavis 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
The GOP: Rich people convincing middle class people to blame poor people.
[–]Akamaru 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Yeah, good luck with that. People are screaming bloody murder over 10's of cents in gas price increases right now all over the country. Cutting off a lifeline that is keeping millions of people from starving to death in the wake of the worst economic recession since The Great Depression, seems reckless, if not completely insane.
We're a much less agrarian society than we were 80 years ago, people can't simply pull themselves up by their bootstraps and grow their own food in most cases.
