Films with trailers better than the actual movie. (self.movies)
submitted 1 year ago by theBelatedLobster
Perhaps it's the use of Arcade Fire or a resulting disappointing film, but for me Where the Wild Things Are had a pretty awesome trailer.
Does anyone else have a favourite trailer that surpasses the movie?
[–]missmediajunkie 114 points115 points116 points 1 year ago
Sigh. The Phamtom Menace.
[–]SPacific 33 points34 points35 points 1 year ago
Also it had the best teaser poster ever. I nearly came in my pants when I first saw this in 1997....sigh
[–]ugladbro 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
I still remember leaving the theater after seeing that trailer for the first time. I couldn't believe it STAR WARS WAS BACK... and oh my Jesus... Obi Wan... lightsabers... droids? SPACESHIPS!!!! MOTHER OF GODDDD!!!!!! No matter how terrible Episode 1 turned out to be, I will always and forever have a hole burned into my heart about the movie I believed we were going to get.
[–]g2g4m10 19 points20 points21 points 1 year ago
I liked the Phantom Menace
I am the 1%
[–]blokeski 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
I came here to say this. Including the sigh.
[–]alison09 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
I sighed the other day when I saw a promotion for its theatrical re-release... In 3D...
[–]fantasygod777 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I was tempted to just downvote you for bringing this to my attention. I didn't.
[–]Syngman_Rhee 59 points60 points61 points 1 year ago
[–]Lonestar93 24 points25 points26 points 1 year ago
I can't even put into words how ridiculously disappointing that movie was. Honestly I'm tempted to argue it's a children's movie purely because it seems to cater to their level of intelligence. I walked out of the theatre feeling stupider.
[–]EltonJuan 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
I almost replied that 'stupider' isn't a word, but decided first to look it up and find that it is, indeed, recognized as a word. Upvoting because you finally gave me reason to look that up.
[–]huntersburroughs 93 points94 points95 points 1 year ago
Terminator Salvation. Awesome trailer, especially with the use of NIN. Shitty movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owrEMGg4x3M
[–]WildeNietzsche 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago*
Because of this trailer, I actually started trying to justify McG's past hack-work as growing pains, and began hyping the film to most of my friends. Well, as they say... fool me once... never again you bastard.
[–]Ken_ny 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Same here. I was so excited. Dragged all my friends opening night, and spent two hours trying to justify the film. So awkward sitting through it knowing it sucked and all my friends were only there because of me.
[–]huntersburroughs 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I convinced my friends to go see it too. They ended up liking it more than me.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago*
I remember quite vividly the excitement I had leading up to the movie. I was 9 when The Phantom Menace came out, and didn't really have the ability to grasp that it was a shitty movie. So for me, Terminator Salvation is my "Phantom Menace", so to speak.
[–]Pastlife123 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
I have to disagree, the trailer gave up a huge twist and that ruined the trailer and the movie.
[–]vanel 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
I guess you're right, but you pretty much know the "twist" the second time you see him.
[–]SuperMeatBoy9 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I think it's because they created the trailer for the wrong version of the film. Christian Bale was meant to play Marcus and have the film be about Marcus, but Christian Bale refused and wanted to play John Connor. As Christian Bale is the bigger name than Sam Worthington, they make a trailer about John Connor in order to attract audiences, and then give them a different film. Which was pants.
[–]Avatar_Ko 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
But for me, it actually worked. The twist made the movie interesting and I wouldn't have gone to see it otherwise. It's just a shame that nothing really came of it.
[–]ezekielziggy 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I actually slept a third way through that movie it was so boring.
Doesn't it feel weird that a movie with loud explosions and action involving robots in a post apocalyptic scenario can turn out to be boring?
[–]DougyM 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
All they needed to do was take the various 2 minute scenes from T1 and T2 of the future war and expand them.
Not some rubbish about the guy from avatar having a really strong heart, not some rubbish about the resistance being douches to Connor, and by all that is holy nothing absolutely nothing about skynet dicking around with little stupid traps and less than useless robots.
The terminator's are supposed to be walking death machines, not an endless horde that someone with plot armour can chew through as they go from A to B.
[–]tyd12345 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
If I wasn't shown the trailer through this thread I would be watching that movie right now.
[–]sortofSufi 86 points87 points88 points 1 year ago
The Batman Complex ..... the movie doesnt even exist.
[–]silversniper01 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago
That was amazing
[–]JonFrost 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
That looked like it'd be a 4 hour movie... and well worth sitting through!
[–]strallweat 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
Mortal Kombat 3 trailer too
[–]joebutters 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
I'm now slightly depressed that this film will never happen.
[–]deku12345 46 points47 points48 points 1 year ago
[–]crudeinc 25 points26 points27 points 1 year ago
God that movie pissed me off. It looked so cool but turned into an incoherent mess SO fast.
[–]obscenicus 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
I feel like I'm the only person on this planet who loves this movie.. :(
[–]amaterasu717 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I didn't think it was a bad movie but the trailer was just so much better. So intense. I still watch it every once in a while, but I'll probably never see the movie again.
[–]hexagoon 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
expected a deep, funny, somewhat epic piece of art
got a popcorn movie with great visuals and shallow characters
[–]Metroshant 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I was expecting the same, deep animated 3d movie, was disappointed, nowadays all 3d animated movies are only for kids.
Where is the creativity ? There are thousands of very creative short animated films, why can't we get a full movie in the same format?
The answer of course is kids movies probably make more money.
[–]thepinksalmon 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
9 was based on a short animation. It didn't end up translating well to the longer format (according to popular opinion). That is one reason why we don't have features like that.
[–]soonerguy11 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
9 the animated film, or 9 the Fellini musical?
[–]girafa 76 points77 points78 points 1 year ago
Battle: Los Angeles
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
Incredibly disappointing considering it was based on actual events.
[–]girafa 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
[–][deleted] 23 points24 points25 points 1 year ago
The trailers for Battle: LA had me pumped, intrigued, infatuated like no other trailer, ever. Only Cloverfield comes close. I was soooooo fucking hooked by the B:LA trailers, I'd watch them almost daily on youtube.
Then the movie came out, and was so close, yet so far away from being a masterpiece. They really did not need to do much more to make it better. Unfortunately, the result was a rather underwhelming piece of work. The aliens were not scary, when they could've been. The trailer gave the impression that the aliens were incredibly systematic, coordinated, ruthless, and not fucking dumb. And although they had all those qualities in some instances, the subsequent, baffling stupidity and lack of tact later displayed completely overshadows all that. And the whole military Rambo-esque operation was insulting to my intelligence.
Ever since Battle:LA, I've lost my enthusiasm for trailers. I've become a hardened skeptic. I can no longer be dazzled and wowed by movie trailers anymore. All because of Battle fucking LA.
[–]stuckit 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
What, you didnt think it was smart for aliens to not have a back-up system for the control of their entire overwhelming air campaign?
[–]TheNr24 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Sounds like the trade federation blockade.
[–]kunomchu 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
The movie went the transformers route. No story just action after action scenes. Not even well done.
[–]novawreck 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
There are a lot of them nowadays. Trailer editors are stepping up their game.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
They just need to stop putting damn spoilers in the trailers.
[–]DietJay 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Film student here. A few weeks ago, this guy Bill Batalato (a big-time producer on things like Top Gun, Hot Shots Part Deux, About Schmidt, Benny and Joon, Broken Arrow) visited our school and told us that trailers today give away major plot points because it gets more people in the seats. Focus groups/studies/etc. apparently show that movies that basically tell the whole story in the trailer wind up making more money at the box office.
Even though he's been working in the industry for years, even he doesn't get the logic behind it.
[–]karnoculars 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
People are idiots. Some of the best movies I've ever seen, I walked into the theater knowing absolutely NOTHING about the movie: The Matrix, A History of Violence, Sunshine, Big Fish.
[–]PunkRockMakesMeSmile 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
The 'Ransom' trailer was legendary bullshit
[–]DivineJustice 29 points30 points31 points 1 year ago*
Probably the most dramatic terms of goodness-of-trailer and shitiness-of-movie ratio is "The Happening". I totally wanted to see it until the overwhelmingly bad reviews rolled in from friends and critics alike. I was all like 'wow, maybe M. Knight isn't sucking anymore'... but nope.
[–]featpete 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Pretty much every Shamalyan trailer is better than its movie counterpart, but I agree that The Happening was like the worst piece of poop to fall off the feces tree.
[–]DivineJustice 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Well yeah, but the Happening trailer was legit badass. Lady in the Water for example looked stupid from the get go.
[–]runningtheblade 100 points101 points102 points 1 year ago
[–]Nate757 22 points23 points24 points 1 year ago
IMO, sucker punch was good depending on what you expected to see. i went into the movie literally not really caring about the plot; thus, I was actually impressed with the one they gave me. I went into the movie expecting random insane action scenes, and that was exactly what I got. so although the movie didn't do well, i still think it was fuckin awesome
[–]propagated 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Suckerpunch would have gotten a solid C from me, if not for the kickass soundtrack IMO. This bumped it to a B-
[–]miskatonicrich 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago
this movie broke my heart...I was in love with the idea of the movie they sold me in the trailers. I was very disappointed in the end.
[–]tbandit 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
It's one of the most unique historical documentaries I've ever seen.
[–]caracasa 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago
I saw Sucker Punch on the plane and after a few strange minutes of guilt because of the setting I enjoyed every single second of it.
And on the onward flight.
And again on the return flight.
[–]Murphistopheles 30 points31 points32 points 1 year ago
I saw it on a plane as well. Mixed reactions all around, and there were only two walk outs.
[–]pulezan 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
It's a very beautiful movie with great steampunk scenes, but there's one thing missing in it: a plot. But I loved it.
[–]BigBreakfast 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
There is a plot. It's not a GREAT plot, and it's sort of a "dream within a dream within a dream" re-hash thing, but I liked it. Definitely more cerebral than your run-of-the-mill action flick.
[–]somethingrelevant 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
But I really liked sucker punch :v
[–]girafa 35 points36 points37 points 1 year ago
Pearl Harbor's teaser is amazing. Largely because of the Thin Red Line soundtrack, and lack of Ben Affleck speaking.
[–]hivoltage815 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
To be fair, that portion of the film is also pretty damn good.
[–]dooster 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Pearl Harbor and it's not even close. I still watch this trailer when I need to get hyped.
[–]mpierre 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Hey, it had Kate Beckinsale in it...
thought I didn't have such a crush on her back then (well, I did, but I guess it's a very long story)
[–]discoparty 26 points27 points28 points 1 year ago
Although I did enjoy the shit out of Tron Legacy, I religiously re-watched the main trailer over a hundred times
[–]tiberone 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
I really did not like that movie. Like at all. But man that trailer was super badass.
[–]durntdehpirate 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I think the video for derezzed is better than the trailer, just because that song is fucking sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
[–]Wazowski 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I don't understand the hate for Tron Legacy.
It's a nearly perfect Tron movie. What were people expecting, exactly?
[–]bf01 29 points30 points31 points 1 year ago
[–]mosai89 22 points23 points24 points 1 year ago
No no no. Medellin's trailer is better than the movie
[–]passequalsfail 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
White Noise. The trailer scared the ever-loving shit out of me, but the movie sucked a big bag of Costner-shaped dicks.
[–]WadeWilsonO-o 32 points33 points34 points 1 year ago
Every Spider-Man 3 trailer!
[–]Awkward_Hugs 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I don't think I've ever been as hyped as when I first saw this trailer. First movie I ever actively tried to find news on back when I was 13. Oh the disappointment :(
[–]Pastlife123 30 points31 points32 points 1 year ago
Clash of the Titans
[–]Joephes 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
TITANS. WILL. CLASH.
[–]amaterasu717 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I didn't think the trailer for this movie was even all that good. It just showed how deeply they'd abandoned the original plot. Such a let down.
[–]Othy 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
That was one of the awesomest trailers I've seen in recent memory. That movie left withthe largest feeling of "meh" ever.
[–]UrbanGimli 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
UNLEASH THE KRAKEN!!!
"But Zeus, you know it takes 15 minutes for him to actually fully unleash, right? maybe we should release him a little early just so we don't spend a lifetime watching him wake up and walk a few feet? Maybe? No? okay"
The Kraken was my biggest dissappointment with that movie. They really dropped the ball on that creature design. The head reminded me of Godzilla 2000 and the whole thing looked very terrestrial with some tentacles slapped on as an after thought.
[–]rylan26 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago
Machete. the 'fake' trailer from Grindhouse.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Machete was a really weird exception to the Hollywood rule of having no plot, the problem with the film was that, in my opinion, it had too much of a plot.
The film was meant to satirise the plot-less, mind-less Hollywood films of late by being downright absurd and unbelievable.
Machete set out with good intentions, but somehow became the very thing it set out to destroy by taking itself too seriously.
[–]Noticethewrongthing 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Did it really take itself too seriously? It has been a while since i watched it, but the thing that sticks with me is the fight between Machete and Seagal at the end of the film.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Obviously if you look at it in comparison to certain other films then Machete just looks bloody ridiculous. But I feel that considering what the film tried to sell itself as, it ended up being too serious.
But thats just my opinion.
[–]vito_corleone 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
He repelled out of a window using someone's intestines. Plus the cheesy one liner's ("Mechete don't text"). It was an awesome homage to the "blacksploitation" films of the 70s/80s. This film definitely didn't take itself too seriously. Holy hell...the scenes with the bodyguards getting their asses whooped with gardening tools (complete with Three Stooges references). I must disagree with you.
[–]alexsc12 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Were you and I watching the same film? Because it was clearly a spoof of old 70s B-movies.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Really? Maybe I'm being a bit daft. I thought that there was certainly that B-Movie element to it, it was certainly evident in the original grindhouse trailer, but I feel that entire concept went out of the window in the final film.
[–]hcwdjk 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago*
I guess you must be a pretty wacky character if this is too serious for you.
(spolers in the link, it's the movie's climax)
[–]RSpencerFink 23 points24 points25 points 1 year ago
[–]mpierre 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
I actually love Daybreakers.
[–]tedkpagonis 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
As did I. Ethan Hawk is such a great actor and I would love to see more of his stuff.
[–]inthenameofmine 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
The final clusterfuck fighting scene is my favorite fighting scene of all time. It's mesmerizing!
[–]RSpencerFink 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
[–]eurrito 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
YES!!!...that song by placebo
[–]JohnnyWeapon 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
But it IS a Richard Kelly movie, and you should know what you're getting into. I actually love this movie, but I can completely understand why a lot of people don't.
[–]Solleret 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I really think more people need to give this movie a fair chance. It's one of my top 50 favorite sci fi films of all time.
You have to remember that its original (and much longer) version was panned at Cannes and tarnished the film's overall reception.
And it certainly does help to know what you're getting into: most mainstream critics like Ebert and Roeper gave it a negative review, while critics at avant-garde friendly publications such as The Village Voice gave it glowing reviews. That alone should give a hint as to the kind of film this is.
[–]JohnnyWeapon 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Very well put. I think people expected a more Donnie Darko type of movie from Richard Kelly... that is, something that is out there a bit, but more easy to digest. And that's just not what he's about.
By the same token, I really liked his more recent move, The Box. Same type of movie as Southland Tales - requires some thinking outside of... wait for it... the box. :)
I like Richard Kelly as a writer and director. I think he's underrated. There are some directors similar to him (read: David Lynch) who have this grand ideas, but put it together in a very head-scratching way. I think RK does it right.
[–]phraynk 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
The Last Airbender
[–]stratakus 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
"Lets make the trailer show the awesome scenes that we took directly from the cartoon so when they come they'll ignore the stuff we changed like Earth Benders in a prison made of Earth or Fire Benders who can't make their own fire!"
[–]Metroshant 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
After watching that stupid movie in "3d" (and I'm quoting 3d because at some point I removed the fucking glasses and kept watching normally)
I have decided to stay away from any Shyamlamanalamanaman movie.
[–]cunspirator 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
The movie 9. Mostly thanks to coheed's "welcome home." that movie would have been awesome if that song played the entire time.
[–]zombietoaster 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
I was so stoked to see this movie after seeing the trailer. Once the movie was over I rewatched the trailer to make sure I wasn't crazy. So much potential for a fairly meh reveal. I know it's supposed to have been true events, I was just hoping for some insane stalker type of stuff.
[–]RainyMonday 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I don't think I would have been as disappointed by the movie if I hadn't seen the trailers first. I think it would have really liked it if I hadn't gone into with this idea that there was going to be some freaky twist, like the trailer made it seem like there was going to be.
[–]OnlySon 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
I thought the trailers for the star wars prequels were actually cool as fuck. I feel dirty saying anything about those movies was good.
[–]LosAngelesSean 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
[–]errer 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Godzilla teaser trailer. Too bad the movie sucked balls.
[–]SpookyRockjaw 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
Transformers... unbelievably epic
Terrible terrible movie.
[–]joobuls 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Im gonna apply this to the second one as well. I rather enjoyed the first one.
[–]Drewdog15 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Movie was the tits!
[–]tiberone 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
I'm not going to say it's better than the actual movie. I thought the actual movie was great. I really loved it.
I'm just saying, the trailer to Tree of Life is probably the best trailer I've ever seen. I still get goosebumps watching it. Just... wow.
[–]bujweiser 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
90% of movies' trailers are better than the movie itself.
Most trailers leave you feeling pumped and excited afterwords, how many movies actually leave you feeling this way?
The post should be asking "which movies are better than the trailers?"
[–]mpierre 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I just posted a new thread here: http://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/mut9w/movies_that_are_better_than_their_trailer/
[–]kelseycliff 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Sofia Coppola's Somewhere
[–]Honey-Badger 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
The first Transformer Movie, after seeing the first one you knew the other movies were going to bad but it didn't stop me hoping.
Also im more sick of the trailers that show us the entier plot of the movie rather than the ones that just get my hopes up for nothing.
[–]themattbrown 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
9 had a pretty fantastic trailer in my opinion. Although I'm not a fan of Coheed and Cambria, I felt the riff for Welcome Home fit perfectly with the feel of the trailer. And way it was put together really left me with a curiosity of what exactly the movie was about. Too bad it ended up being boring and confusing.
[–]amalgamatedchaos 22 points23 points24 points 1 year ago
This can be said about almost every teaser trailer. J.J. Abrams is known for this.
[–]duderino13 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
Star Trek and Cloverfield were as good as I thought they would be.
[–]sickyd 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago
The teaser trailer for Super 8 had me thinking it was going to be an awesome thriller, not a Goonies remake.
[–]duderino13 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Yes - you did it - it was a Goonies remake - I couldn't think of how to explain it.
Overall I liked it, but something just didn't feel right.
[–]gabrielsburg 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Bummer for whoever downvoted this... this is totally how I felt about Super 8.
[–]DrKushnstein 24 points25 points26 points 1 year ago
Sunshine. Not to say the movie is bad, but fuck that trailer is unreal.
[–]Metroshant 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago
I love that movie
[–]theoneiwantedwasgone 15 points16 points17 points 1 year ago
I hear a lot of hate for that movie, but I too love it, including the end. Maybe I'm just biased towards Danny Boyle's stuff.
[–]Jofflic 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
Nah dude. This movie is awesome
[–]yoggiez 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
[–]tiberone 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
fucking village trailer got me so good. never again, m night. never again.
[–]vissuuh 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I remember watching this Avatar trailer like hundred times. Movie was decent too but trailer is just godly.
[–][deleted] 1 year ago
[–]Ipeunipig 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Where's the 'Village' key?
[–]omgiamnaked 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Oh Ipeunipig, Ill tell you when you're older...
[–]HenkieVV 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
The Village wasn't so much a bad movie, as it was a movie with a misleading trailer. If you don't go into it expecting the kind of movie the trailer seems to promise, the whole thing gets substantially better.
[–]EltonJuan 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I actually never saw the trailer for that and enjoyed it. Then again, I was 14 when that came out.
[–]GatewayKeeper 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
One day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GU4qLmIXbOE
[–]Metroshant 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
[–]KarthXLR 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Public Enemies. Actual movie is one of the most boring I've seen, and I watch 4 hour movies.
[–]afterthewar 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
You incredible badass, you.
[–]Birdzerk01 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Vantage Point had one of the most intense trailers that I've ever seen.
Too bad the movie was a bust. :-/
[–]Poopface11678 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Jarhead - Kanye's "Jesus Walks" accompanying Desert Storm troopers walking while oil fields burn in the background. Amazing actors, tons of "action" scenes ... little bit of humor makes you think it could be another Fullmetal ...
[–]starxdoubt 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
[–]Compumerk 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
avatar: the last airbender
[–]sh0ryuu 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I was so hyped for this movie from the trailer. Movie itself was awful.
[–]hipstersarepeopletoo 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Anything that uses NIN in the trailer instantly makes it epic. Most of the time, movie does not comply.
[–]Capatown 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
[–]MadBeard 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago*
X-Men: The Last Stand. That was really just a fool's hope, all things considered.
That movie makes me so angry... and the trailer is so good.
[–]MadBeard 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Me too. Nearly every aspect of the movie bothers me.
[–]MFLUDER 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Tree of Life.
[–]nlsimpson 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
The Tree of Life is an amazing film in my opinion. Classic Terrence Malick. Totally understand why a lot of people hate it though.
[–]darthmittens 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
The Rum Diary
[–]donnie_brasco 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
[–]LimeLou 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
The only thing that comes to my mind at the moment is the trailer for Tetsuo (1989) The whole movie wasn't really my cup of tea, but the visuals are damn impressive and the trailer shows that well.
[–]loupgarou21 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I'm going back a few years with this one, but I'm gonna say The Blair Witch Project.
[–]CaptainDecent 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
White Noise. The trailers scared the shit out of me, but the actual movie was just awful.
[–]rubberchicken2004 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
paranormal activity 3.

Not actually a trailer, but the ARG for A.I. (the Kubrick/Spielberg movie) painted a much more interesting world and told a better story than the movie it was an ad for.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
I watched that trailer so much, even though I was no real fan of Star Wars in particular (not saying I don't like it, seen the original trilogy about three or four times the last twenty years, but still it's way too overrated imo).
Then I saw Episode I.
In retrospect the only good thing out of that movie was Darth Maul, and even he died stupidly. Come on man, you can make superhuman jumps using the force, but when the Jedi you've been battling for ten minutes does a superjump, and he's been superjumping way too frequently previously, right in front of you, you just freeze like an idiot and let him slice you in two? Weak.

Yeh, big upset. I feel sorry for anyone that read the books it was based on, then went and watched the movie.

pineapple express. great movie, but amazing trailer.
[–]petryshka 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Ingrid Michaelson's "Can't Help Falling In Love" was perfect in the trailer, but it wasn't in the movie at all!

This post reminds me of a video on The Onion, where they were reporting on the 'controversy' of the Iron Man trailer being made into a full length feature film.

Star Wars: Episode I

The Day after tommorow, looked like a good apocalyse movie, but once they'd blown their wad on the 'Frozen New York' visual there wasn't much left.

Every comedy where they put the only good jokes in it...
[–]jam3zz 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Where The Wild Things Are had one of the best trailers ever. Movie was above average
[–]theclaaaaaaw 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Bit late to the party, but Cowboys and Aliens.
[–]IndianaJwns 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Anything by Tyler Perry:
Because it lays out the entire plot
You didn't just waste 2 hours on a Tyler Perry movie
That isn't to say you didn't just waste 5 minutes on a trailer, but it's still better than the movie.
[–]Emperor_Tamarin 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
My life is a series of movie disappointments.
Iron Man 2
Reign of Fire
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
And really every Zack Snyder movie. We'll probably have a good looking Superman trailer this time next year.
[–]thexton 54 points55 points56 points 1 year ago
dude, Watchmen was amazing.
[–]shen9089 26 points27 points28 points 1 year ago
I agree, Watchmen was awesome, and it stayed pretty close to the graphic novel with the exception of like the last 20 minutes of the movie.
[–]MurfDog07 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
BUT, with respect to the graphic novel which is amazing, the movie ending made way more sense. Cause instead of it being just some random giant alien that brings US and Russia together it's the fact that the hero the US once trusted has turned against them, and I find that much more dramatic.
[–]Puredeez 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Definitely, great movie and soundtrack.
[–]SirVanderhoot 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
With a re-casting it would have been amazing. But it had a lot of weaknesses that kept it from being awesome.
[–]joniblyth 19 points20 points21 points 1 year ago
I liked Iron Man 2.
[–]prince_of_tacoma 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Sky Captain was really cool... Not a great movie, but just a lot of fun.
[–]cualcrees 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
What!? Cloverfield is amazing!
"you will believe a man can mope"
[–]vanel 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I'm a huge Superman fan, but even I admit the movie is 75% shit and 25% awesome. The movie was butchered apparently in post, but that's Singers fault also.
Next one should be better, the acting talent is there, even though the set pics are making me very nervous.
If the entire movie sucks, I'm sure Zod will still be interesting to watch because Michael Shannon is batshit insane.
Reign of Fire's trailer might have been misleading, but the movie was still pretty good. The trailer was definitely not better than the movie.
Cloverfield was good also, the hype surrounding that movie was insane, there was almost no way they could deliver on the hype they created.
[–]abowlofcereal 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I'll probably go to my grave defending Matrix Reloaded. That movie delivered. Now, Revolutions... yeah that was the turd in the rose garden.
The only part of reloaded I enjoyed was the 14 minute chase scene of orgasms.

Every Michael Bay movie ever.
[–]redbedhaed 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Every Michael Bay movie ever. (I figured it needed stating twice)
[–]alwayssmileback 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
The Fall. Sorry for fans of the film, but I found the trailer much more captivating than the actual film.
[–]cobblestati 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
[–]spongemonster 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Gotta disagree here (opinion, i know). The trailers were indeed badass, but the movie delivered. Visually stunning, the sound, the music, the fights - all incredible. I am of the opinion that the movie exceeded the trailer's promise.

Star Trek: First Contact
This looked like it was going to be the coolest and most action packed Star Trek ever. I mean, THE BORG, one of the most feared and iconic baddies of all time get their own movie. Then it was meh, with a lot of plot holes you only realize later.
They killed the Borg long before ST:FC. I remember the first episode/s with them and they were scary creepy.
Then they kept dumbing them down. And humanizing them. And dumbing them down some more. So sad, they were the ultimate bad guys.
[–]DougyM 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
The guys who did the now infamous Star Wars prequel reviews delved into First Contact (and other TNG movies) pretty much hitting the nail on the head with them too.

Across the Universe
[–]Joephes 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
The movie was a 2 hour Beatles music video, you didn't get that from the trailer?
[–]stoopdapoop 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I know this thread is about movies, but fuck the rules.
Far Cry 2 had some decent trailers, but the game was awful.
[–]Joephes 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
On the topic of games, Dead Island's trailer was the best video game trailer I'd ever seen.
[–]professorhazard 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I still get chills every time I watch the launch trailer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Ok, game trailers. Try these one on for size.
Star Wars Old Republic.
And this one Ok, now look at some gameplay. 'nuff said.
While on the topic of star wars, here's the trailer for Force Unleashed II. That game was extremely disappointing (freakin' Lucasarts).
Ok, so pretty much any well animated cinematic Star Wars trailer will be better than the game it is advertizing.
[–]YourBoyEvan 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I love Far Cry 2 and will defend it to the death of me.
