I still remember leaving the theater after seeing that trailer for the first time. I couldn't believe it STAR WARS WAS BACK... and oh my Jesus... Obi Wan... lightsabers... droids? SPACESHIPS!!!! MOTHER OF GODDDD!!!!!! No matter how terrible Episode 1 turned out to be, I will always and forever have a hole burned into my heart about the movie I believed we were going to get.

I can't even put into words how ridiculously disappointing that movie was. Honestly I'm tempted to argue it's a children's movie purely because it seems to cater to their level of intelligence. I walked out of the theatre feeling stupider.

[–]EltonJuan 8 points9 points ago

I almost replied that 'stupider' isn't a word, but decided first to look it up and find that it is, indeed, recognized as a word. Upvoting because you finally gave me reason to look that up.

Terminator Salvation. Awesome trailer, especially with the use of NIN. Shitty movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owrEMGg4x3M

Because of this trailer, I actually started trying to justify McG's past hack-work as growing pains, and began hyping the film to most of my friends. Well, as they say... fool me once... never again you bastard.

[–]Ken_ny 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. I was so excited. Dragged all my friends opening night, and spent two hours trying to justify the film. So awkward sitting through it knowing it sucked and all my friends were only there because of me.

[–]huntersburroughs 2 points3 points ago

I convinced my friends to go see it too. They ended up liking it more than me.

I remember quite vividly the excitement I had leading up to the movie. I was 9 when The Phantom Menace came out, and didn't really have the ability to grasp that it was a shitty movie. So for me, Terminator Salvation is my "Phantom Menace", so to speak.

[–]Pastlife123 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have to disagree, the trailer gave up a huge twist and that ruined the trailer and the movie.

[–]vanel 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guess you're right, but you pretty much know the "twist" the second time you see him.

[–]SuperMeatBoy9 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's because they created the trailer for the wrong version of the film. Christian Bale was meant to play Marcus and have the film be about Marcus, but Christian Bale refused and wanted to play John Connor. As Christian Bale is the bigger name than Sam Worthington, they make a trailer about John Connor in order to attract audiences, and then give them a different film. Which was pants.

[–]Avatar_Ko 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But for me, it actually worked. The twist made the movie interesting and I wouldn't have gone to see it otherwise. It's just a shame that nothing really came of it.

[–]huntersburroughs 2 points3 points ago

Doesn't it feel weird that a movie with loud explosions and action involving robots in a post apocalyptic scenario can turn out to be boring?

[–]DougyM 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All they needed to do was take the various 2 minute scenes from T1 and T2 of the future war and expand them.

Not some rubbish about the guy from avatar having a really strong heart, not some rubbish about the resistance being douches to Connor, and by all that is holy nothing absolutely nothing about skynet dicking around with little stupid traps and less than useless robots.

The terminator's are supposed to be walking death machines, not an endless horde that someone with plot armour can chew through as they go from A to B.

I was expecting the same, deep animated 3d movie, was disappointed, nowadays all 3d animated movies are only for kids. Where is the creativity ? There are thousands of very creative short animated films, why can't we get a full movie in the same format? The answer of course is kids movies probably make more money.

[–]thepinksalmon 1 point2 points ago

9 was based on a short animation. It didn't end up translating well to the longer format (according to popular opinion). That is one reason why we don't have features like that.

The trailers for Battle: LA had me pumped, intrigued, infatuated like no other trailer, ever. Only Cloverfield comes close. I was soooooo fucking hooked by the B:LA trailers, I'd watch them almost daily on youtube.

Then the movie came out, and was so close, yet so far away from being a masterpiece. They really did not need to do much more to make it better. Unfortunately, the result was a rather underwhelming piece of work. The aliens were not scary, when they could've been. The trailer gave the impression that the aliens were incredibly systematic, coordinated, ruthless, and not fucking dumb. And although they had all those qualities in some instances, the subsequent, baffling stupidity and lack of tact later displayed completely overshadows all that. And the whole military Rambo-esque operation was insulting to my intelligence.

Ever since Battle:LA, I've lost my enthusiasm for trailers. I've become a hardened skeptic. I can no longer be dazzled and wowed by movie trailers anymore. All because of Battle fucking LA.

Film student here. A few weeks ago, this guy Bill Batalato (a big-time producer on things like Top Gun, Hot Shots Part Deux, About Schmidt, Benny and Joon, Broken Arrow) visited our school and told us that trailers today give away major plot points because it gets more people in the seats. Focus groups/studies/etc. apparently show that movies that basically tell the whole story in the trailer wind up making more money at the box office.

Even though he's been working in the industry for years, even he doesn't get the logic behind it.

Probably the most dramatic terms of goodness-of-trailer and shitiness-of-movie ratio is "The Happening". I totally wanted to see it until the overwhelmingly bad reviews rolled in from friends and critics alike. I was all like 'wow, maybe M. Knight isn't sucking anymore'... but nope.

[–]featpete 5 points6 points ago

IMO, sucker punch was good depending on what you expected to see. i went into the movie literally not really caring about the plot; thus, I was actually impressed with the one they gave me. I went into the movie expecting random insane action scenes, and that was exactly what I got. so although the movie didn't do well, i still think it was fuckin awesome

Machete. the 'fake' trailer from Grindhouse.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Machete was a really weird exception to the Hollywood rule of having no plot, the problem with the film was that, in my opinion, it had too much of a plot.

The film was meant to satirise the plot-less, mind-less Hollywood films of late by being downright absurd and unbelievable.

Machete set out with good intentions, but somehow became the very thing it set out to destroy by taking itself too seriously.

[–]Noticethewrongthing 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did it really take itself too seriously? It has been a while since i watched it, but the thing that sticks with me is the fight between Machete and Seagal at the end of the film.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Obviously if you look at it in comparison to certain other films then Machete just looks bloody ridiculous. But I feel that considering what the film tried to sell itself as, it ended up being too serious.

But thats just my opinion.

He repelled out of a window using someone's intestines. Plus the cheesy one liner's ("Mechete don't text"). It was an awesome homage to the "blacksploitation" films of the 70s/80s. This film definitely didn't take itself too seriously. Holy hell...the scenes with the bodyguards getting their asses whooped with gardening tools (complete with Three Stooges references). I must disagree with you.

[–]Solleret 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really think more people need to give this movie a fair chance. It's one of my top 50 favorite sci fi films of all time.

You have to remember that its original (and much longer) version was panned at Cannes and tarnished the film's overall reception.

And it certainly does help to know what you're getting into: most mainstream critics like Ebert and Roeper gave it a negative review, while critics at avant-garde friendly publications such as The Village Voice gave it glowing reviews. That alone should give a hint as to the kind of film this is.

[–]JohnnyWeapon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Very well put. I think people expected a more Donnie Darko type of movie from Richard Kelly... that is, something that is out there a bit, but more easy to digest. And that's just not what he's about.

By the same token, I really liked his more recent move, The Box. Same type of movie as Southland Tales - requires some thinking outside of... wait for it... the box. :)

I like Richard Kelly as a writer and director. I think he's underrated. There are some directors similar to him (read: David Lynch) who have this grand ideas, but put it together in a very head-scratching way. I think RK does it right.

The Village wasn't so much a bad movie, as it was a movie with a misleading trailer. If you don't go into it expecting the kind of movie the trailer seems to promise, the whole thing gets substantially better.

Not actually a trailer, but the ARG for A.I. (the Kubrick/Spielberg movie) painted a much more interesting world and told a better story than the movie it was an ad for.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

I watched that trailer so much, even though I was no real fan of Star Wars in particular (not saying I don't like it, seen the original trilogy about three or four times the last twenty years, but still it's way too overrated imo).

Then I saw Episode I.

In retrospect the only good thing out of that movie was Darth Maul, and even he died stupidly. Come on man, you can make superhuman jumps using the force, but when the Jedi you've been battling for ten minutes does a superjump, and he's been superjumping way too frequently previously, right in front of you, you just freeze like an idiot and let him slice you in two? Weak.

Anything by Tyler Perry:

  1. Because it lays out the entire plot

  2. You didn't just waste 2 hours on a Tyler Perry movie

That isn't to say you didn't just waste 5 minutes on a trailer, but it's still better than the movie.

My life is a series of movie disappointments.

Matrix Reloaded

Superman Returns

Cloverfield

Iron Man 2

Blindness

Hancock

Reign of Fire

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

The International

Watchmen And really every Zack Snyder movie. We'll probably have a good looking Superman trailer this time next year.

[–]shen9089 26 points27 points ago

I agree, Watchmen was awesome, and it stayed pretty close to the graphic novel with the exception of like the last 20 minutes of the movie.

[–]MurfDog07 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

BUT, with respect to the graphic novel which is amazing, the movie ending made way more sense. Cause instead of it being just some random giant alien that brings US and Russia together it's the fact that the hero the US once trusted has turned against them, and I find that much more dramatic.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a huge Superman fan, but even I admit the movie is 75% shit and 25% awesome. The movie was butchered apparently in post, but that's Singers fault also.

Next one should be better, the acting talent is there, even though the set pics are making me very nervous.

If the entire movie sucks, I'm sure Zod will still be interesting to watch because Michael Shannon is batshit insane.

[–]vanel 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Reign of Fire's trailer might have been misleading, but the movie was still pretty good. The trailer was definitely not better than the movie.

Cloverfield was good also, the hype surrounding that movie was insane, there was almost no way they could deliver on the hype they created.

[–]abowlofcereal 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll probably go to my grave defending Matrix Reloaded. That movie delivered. Now, Revolutions... yeah that was the turd in the rose garden.

Gotta disagree here (opinion, i know). The trailers were indeed badass, but the movie delivered. Visually stunning, the sound, the music, the fights - all incredible. I am of the opinion that the movie exceeded the trailer's promise.

Star Trek: First Contact

This looked like it was going to be the coolest and most action packed Star Trek ever. I mean, THE BORG, one of the most feared and iconic baddies of all time get their own movie. Then it was meh, with a lot of plot holes you only realize later.

[–]stuckit 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They killed the Borg long before ST:FC. I remember the first episode/s with them and they were scary creepy.

Then they kept dumbing them down. And humanizing them. And dumbing them down some more. So sad, they were the ultimate bad guys.

[–]DougyM 1 point2 points ago

The guys who did the now infamous Star Wars prequel reviews delved into First Contact (and other TNG movies) pretty much hitting the nail on the head with them too.

Ok, game trailers. Try these one on for size.

Star Wars Old Republic.

And this one Ok, now look at some gameplay. 'nuff said.

While on the topic of star wars, here's the trailer for Force Unleashed II. That game was extremely disappointing (freakin' Lucasarts).

Ok, so pretty much any well animated cinematic Star Wars trailer will be better than the game it is advertizing.
