I liked The Mist, ive never read the book but the film was really good and i couldn't believe the ending, When i told my friends to watch it they just called it shit :(

[–]devilsadvocado -4 points-3 points ago

It still blows my mind that the same man who directed The Shawshank Redemption directed The Mist. I mean, Shawshank was over-sentimental, horribly acted bollocks and The Mist...well, The Mist may just be the greatest film of our generation.

No, I love it. My comment was tongue in cheek, making fun of my parent commentor for thinking that The Mist was a good movie.

"The Life Aquatic". I get the impression most consider it Wes Anderson's weakest movie but I still watch it.

[–]Moosebomber 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That one is my third favorite. In my opinion, Bottle Rocket is his weakest.

[–]devilsadvocado -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wes Anderson's films from strongest to weakest:

  1. Rushmore
  2. The Royal Tennenbaums
  3. Bottle Rocket
  4. The Fantastic Mr. Fox
  5. The Life Aquatic
  6. The Darjeeling Limited

1 and 2 as well as 4 and 5 are interchangeable depending on preference.

I think they're all at least pretty good though, with Rushmore and Tennenbaums being the only ones classified as great.

I really enjoyed "The Watchmen" too. My all-time favorite movie line came out of there "None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with you. You're locked up in here with me." Epic line! I know it was in the comics too, I just loved the way it was delivered.

I know that there are obviously people out there who like this movie, but most people I talk to hate it. Watchmen was awesome. One of my favorite movies. That opening montage? Classic.

Really? I don't think I've met anyone who hates it.

Including the readers who, like me, were the hardest to turn. Everyone agreed that the opening montage was purely for the readers benefit and the changed ending was for the better.

I adore this film and think Mr. Nobody it is superb for the first two thirds especially towards the end of the teenage act but the final third lets it down somewhat, I just don't think it stands up to the rest of the film.

Hey, this probably doesn't mean anything but I'm living in India at the moment and when I was flicking through the discs at my local pirate DVD shop I came across, oddly enough, Mr. Nobody.

The Water Horse

It's about the Loch Ness monster. Think The Iron Giant, ET, How to Train Your Dragon, or any other movie where a kid finds a creature, has to hide it from everyone else, and then the military gets involved.

Unfortunately, the boy actor is terrible, but everyone else is good, and the special effects were amazing.

What! How can they not like Gattaca. Still hits me today, especially with the advances in science that go on every day.

[–]radol 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I guess for many people its just too calm/slow movie - they get easily distracted and stop paying attention. So in the end they don't "get" the message and it becomes some boring love/criminal story in wierd (umm, theatrical?) science-fiction setting with cheesy happy ending. Belive or not, but I know at least two girls who fell asleep when watching it.

That movie looks so damn freaking good. It's colourful, it's fast, it actually has a lot in common with the source material except that it's 1000 of times more beautiful.

I liked it till the end, when it tried to be meaningful and utterly failed. The whole lobotomist as escape was weak IMO. And I was a little peeved that we knew nothing about the girl who DID get out. We only met her in the fantasy worlds and nothing about that information was certain.

The Good German is one of my all-time favorites because I'm fascinated by post-war German history and redevelopment, and it's the only movie I've found that's set in the immediate post-war period besides The Third Man. Critics are tied up in how it "fails" as an homage to noir or in character development, and how there are no clear good and bad guys, while I disagree with all of them 100% on the latter two but wouldn't know about the first point. The fact that the characters have ambiguous morals and goals, and aren't very relatable, are huge points in its favor. I don't remember when it came out, but judging how so many people couldn't overcome the expectation of it being a 40s-style noir and nothing else, I guess it was marketed as only that.

A Serious Man is my all-time favorite movie. I'm not Jewish, I didn't grow up in the 60s or the Midwest, but I think it's as close to perfect as possible while being enjoyable, moving, and hilarious. Every character is a real person, and while they're designed to be Jewish in 1967, every conversation is one that real people have. I'm the only person I know who really likes it.

I'm the only person I know who really likes it.

I think you're right about that. For me, A Serious Man was just kind of sad without achieving anything. I left the cinema and never thought about the film again.

I loved The Third Man. I'll have to check out the Good German sometime.

Hey, there's no accounting for taste. I love Job-like stories, and I thought ASM was a great one. Despite the ending, I also think the way Gopnik (protagonist) confronts/avoids his problems is pretty heartwarming, but don't ask me to explain that further because I can't.

Live Free or Die Hard. I know the action is ridiculous but somehow Bruce makes it worth watching. Live Free is my favorite of the series, hopefullly they can do something similar in Die Hard 5.

[–]Jaraxo -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Die Hard 4 is exactly what you'd expect from a Die Hard film, an action film, over the top and often ridiculous but fun as hell to watch, and personally, it achieved that really well. Action films get a lot of bad press these days, as it seems any film that doesn't have a hidden meaning or a deep message can't be seen as good, as it's not "intelligent".

[–]girafa 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're forgetting that Die Hard was made famous by being an intelligent, not-crazy-over-the-top action film where the protagonist wasn't running up and down the eastern seaboard, but was confined, had limited resources, and was impossible to track down and kill.

Die Hard 4 was a fucking travesty to everything the franchise was built on. And I don't know what hidden meanings or deep messages have to do with anything.

[–]E-Step 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think they have to have deep messages, but they have to be good - the first Die Hard is a great example of an action movie done completely correctly. The sequels just aren't as good.

[–]YoullThankMeLater 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. Its annoying when people bash on this yet so many people love the Transporter movies. At least Bruce Willis fucking acts in his movies.

[–]girafa 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't like Die Hard 4 or the Transporter series, but people probably dislike Die Hard 4 more because the Transporter series started out idiotic, and the filmmakers know they're making stupid movies. Die Hard 4 was a sequel to a really good franchise (maybe not Die Hard 2) and they just pissed all over everything that once made it great.

[–]rabarrett 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sucker Punch was awful, except for the soundtrack. It tried way too hard to have a shocking twist ending and be a cult hit, but instead just ended up being stupid and boring. The acting was terrible, especially the man in all the flashbacks who would always say some lame, cliched quote. A total waste of money and I have no idea how anyone is viewing it as a good film.

[–]FuzzyLoveRabbit 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm with you there. If they had just tried to make a shoot-em-up with hot girls and fantasy worlds it would've fit the bill just fine.
