So is it legal to brew your own beer but not to distill your own liquor?

[–]Ambrose_Balin[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yep! You can brew up to 100 gallons of beer per year without any kind of license. You can gift it or share it however you please, but never sell it. As far as I know those are the only restrictions.

Looks like KY defaults to federal law on home brewing: http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/pages/government-affairs/statutes/kentucky

Thanks Jimmy Carter!

Huh. It appears I was wrong about sharing it. Well, they'll never catch me alive.

I am a member, although I am not very active, I think I can answer your questions. Everyone who has any interest in brewing is welcome, no matter the skill level! Just introduce yourself as someone new, and you will be tasting some homebrew in no time. I found the vast majority of people to just be beer geeks who wanted to talk about and share their brews.

Do not at all be afraid to go to a meeting. It is a pretty diverse crowd with respect to personalities, from introverted to extroverted, but tends to attract college to middle aged men (there are definitely women brewers at every meeting).

We have been meeting at the Red Mile, but I think that is going to be changing with Beerworks and Country Boy Brewing opening. I would say keep an eye on the website, but I don't think it gets updated regularly. I will try and drop you a line when they decide where the next meeting will be.

That sounds great, thank you! My girlfriend and I just finished our 5th batch, so we still have plenty to learn. I thought BOCK might be a good opportunity to get feedback on our beer and get some pointers in general.

Cheers!

i'm not a member because I don't often have the chance to attend the meeting, but am an avid homebrewer.

That's cool. We've been really enjoying the hobby for the past few months, but are still noobs. I just recently made the transition to small batch all grain. I'll find out how I did in about 2 more weeks...

awesome! I don't have the space for all grain so i'm suck with extract brewing still :\

I am not but I've recently started brewing my own beer and would totally be interested in this. Is there a website or anywhere I can get some more info on it?

[–]Ambrose_Balin[S] 1 point2 points ago

Here is their website. I've tried to contact them before and not gotten a response. Also, the pictures and event descriptions were all years out of date last time I checked.

One of the owners of Lexington Beerworks (Mike?) mentioned that BOCK was going to start holding some meetings there and also at Country Boy Brewing. I may try to crash one of those myself.

What sort of brews have you made so far?

I've only just bottled my first which was just a lager which the ingredients came with my brew kit. Just bottled it last week so I'm going to give it a little bit more time.

Next thing I'm going to try is a pumpkin ale, though. I got the ingredients for one for Christmas and I'm pretty excited about doing that. I think I need to get some more equipment before I rush into it, though.

edit: and oh yeah, thanks for the info on BOCK. They actually do seem to have some new events on the calendar so I may try to crash one of those too.
