Just wanted to say that as a Flames fan I was really excited about you and pretty upset when I saw that you were a part of the trade. Loved watching you play on that line with Reinhart and Baertschi during the prospects tournament. Best of luck to you!

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 45 points46 points ago

Thank you very much! I love those two guys and was just talking to Sven earlier today!

[–]redwings27 1 point2 points ago

I went to a Winterhawks game about two months ago. Sven scored the OT winner. It was awesome. Good luck as a Canadien!

[–]Rincey 2 points3 points ago

Hawks STH here. That kid is going to be something else. I will miss seeing him out there in a hawks sweater, for sure.

[–]anderrob 84 points85 points ago

Can I have your autograph?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 371 points372 points ago

Patrick Holland 41

[–]anderrob 115 points116 points ago

You're my new favorite player.

[–]xladiciusx 8 points9 points ago

[–]Langbot 25 points26 points ago

You know what they say. It's so cold in the D!

[–]the_guapo 13 points14 points ago

[–]Eighter 11 points12 points ago

How the fuck do we 'posta keep peace?

[–]Ob-La-Di 5 points6 points ago

Welp, you've gained another fan for this one. xD

[–]Aero93 5 points6 points ago

i laughed out loud...literally

[–]kmad 5 points6 points ago

Same. Early favorite for Best Comment of 2012 right there.

[–]Rincey 1 point2 points ago

Epic response

[–]poignard 41 points42 points ago

Is it weird playing as yourself in a video game?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 18 points19 points ago

It was cool the first time they put us in, but (as expected) they don't put nearly as much detail into our characteristics and skill points so it doesn't feel very personal. ***Not trying to sound ungrateful :P

[–]Eso 15 points16 points ago

This is the most important question in this thread.

[–]rpgguy_1o1 123 points124 points ago

Patrick, I'm five years older than you are, so I feel comfortable calling you son.

Son, are you ready to win some fucking hockey games?

Are you ready to eat a schwartz's smoked meat sandwhich?

get some fucking poutine?

Ready to start your life as a fucking celebrity in the greatest hockey city in fucking world?

Let's do this shit Holland, we're the best/worst fans in the world, and you've got my support mother fucker!

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 64 points65 points ago

Sounds about the right age difference for the nickname.

[–]rpgguy_1o1 168 points169 points ago

Also, my busty 21 year old friend Melanie is interested in meeting you. PM me if you'd like to have her and her big boobs show you around the city. Yes I am trying to pimp her out for tickets.

[–]bazurkk 84 points85 points ago

I wish all Canadiens fans were this guy.

[–]brenobah 65 points66 points ago

I think they are, until they:

A. Win something, and burn the city.

B. Lose something, and burn the city.

[–]illusiveab 19 points20 points ago

All I heard was big boobs.

[–]Ice_And_Fire 8 points9 points ago

I wish we could burn the city now to get rid of all the snow, too.

[–]halfhearted_skeptic 8 points9 points ago

You don't see any snow in Vancouver, do you?

[–]jimstr 2 points3 points ago

nope sorry.. we burn the city only if we win; we don't celebrate loses.

[–]BeamaQuickshift 1 point2 points ago

In Calgary when we win something we just party and look at all the girls showing their tits.....

More cities should adopt this method of celebration.

[–]Nicoscope 9 points10 points ago

Tri-City Americans tickets arent that expense... ಠ_ಠ

[–]emiliodelgado 2 points3 points ago

i think he;'s investing for the longrun

[–]Gonkulator 1 point2 points ago

Man I hate to be that guy but....pics or it didn't happen...

Sigh.

Schwartz's smoked meat sandwich? Please inform me of this, I have heard others from Montreal talk about it when they come up to Maine and all they do is scoff at me when I ask because I'm American. It always leads me to say to them "Well I'd be more inclined to visit your city but since you're being a complete asshole about it I'd rather not bother".

[–]thecapitalc 2 points3 points ago

http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/

Best sandwich ever.

And I live in Toronto.

[–]vog1 1 point2 points ago

You sir are a gentleman!

[–]retinarow 2 points3 points ago

I don't want to sound grave but listen to this fucking man about Schwartz's smoked meat sandwiches. He is looking out for you.

Also congratulations on your career and all that, but seriously. Get a smoked meat sandwich.

[–]Mastershake16 1 point2 points ago

Yeah get excited for Bruins games in Boston muahahaha

[–]imicit 5 points6 points ago

I called him son.. - Louis CK

[–]strongbad3689 82 points83 points ago

Are you prepared to be the most-talked-about player on r/hockey from now until you retire? You're going to be the Tim Tebow of Reddit. Also, are you planning to put a team logo next to your username? And I have to wonder, how much stock do you, and players, take in what people say about you on the Internet and social forums such as Reddit? Does what we say bother you?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 79 points80 points ago

Well I really hope I can become a good enough player to be talked about. I love reddit.

I'd like to say that we don't put much stock in it, but I remember being a rookie in the WHL and checking the fan forums from time to time to see what the fan opinion of me was. It would get to me if it was bad and it would help my confidence when it was positive. Now is a lot different because I am an established player and I know when I play good / bad and make a good play / bad play.

[–]taycky22 27 points28 points ago

Do you think it's fairly common for players to check fan message boards? I've always wondered this.

Thanks for doing this, and good luck in Montreal. Be sure to hit up jay baruchel on twitter. The guy is a die hard fan.

[–]emiliodelgado 13 points14 points ago

if Sean Avery checks he's probably crying himself to sleep

[–]intestinalworms 18 points19 points ago

I imagine him just soaking up all the hate and becoming even stronger, like it's some kind of ethereal energy source.

[–]theninjagreg 6 points7 points ago

On top of piles of money and supermodels.

[–]balls_of_glory 1 point2 points ago

There's a name I recognize from the STLToday boards...

[–]strongbad3689 8 points9 points ago*

Awesome, thanks for taking the time to answer all our questions! Don't let what people say about you on the Internet bother you; hockey fans are just very passionate and often take the extremes, as I'm sure you're aware (especially if you do play for Montreal).

Good luck making it to the big leagues! We're all rooting for you now so we can harass ask you all the questions we've all been dying to ask professional hockey players, and so we can tell all our non-Reddit friends, "Hey! I kinda know that guy!"

[–]ppjjmm 22 points23 points ago

I'm a Flames fan... disappointed to see you go, dude. You've got potential and have certainly been making a mark in Tri-City.

Just to satisfy my curiosity - did you get to meet/talk/play alongside Iggy? On a scale of amazing to mind-bogglingly amazing, how awesome is he?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 61 points62 points ago

The first time I saw him was just turning a corner in the dressing room and he smiled at me and I was completely shocked so had nothing to say and just walked away smiling.

This September at camp he was talking to a buddy of mine then introduced himself to me. Unbelievably classy guy and I'm sure you will hear the exact same from anybody else that has met him.

[–]bu77munch 43 points44 points ago

What are you doing on reddit? Best of luck in Montreal!

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 177 points178 points ago

Been a redditor for a while now. Hard to stop.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]illusiveab 8 points9 points ago

Can't be...these guys have lives AND girlfriends.

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 15 points16 points ago

reddit makes no exceptions.

[–]JewPorn 20 points21 points ago

Trevor May, the Phillies' top pitching prospect, did an AMA a few days ago, and admitted to being addicted to reddit too. There's probably more pro athletes on here than we realize.

[–]illusiveab 11 points12 points ago

I posted up a Roy Halladay AMA once and it got no hits much like most of the teams he pitches against.

[–]TL10 12 points13 points ago

I wonder what Sid is doing with all the spare time he has...

[–]emiliodelgado 30 points31 points ago

crying

[–]seaseme 2 points3 points ago

I hear it caused a minor rash to form on his face. He's expected to be out for an additional few months for observation.

[–]turismofan1986 4 points5 points ago

Patrick Kane surf's /sp/ on 4chan

[–]JokerSE 8 points9 points ago

Well, his story checks out

[–]KickapooPonies 6 points7 points ago

I bet those threads about buying new hockey skates are really enlightening then, eh?

[–]TL10 1 point2 points ago

Professional hockey player reddits... The possibility that he knows a fair amount of memes...

I- I need to sit down for a moment, my head might just explode.

[–]ABZC 58 points59 points ago

Are you disappointed that you will no longer get a chance to play with perhaps the great hockey player of all time, Anton Babchuk?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 49 points50 points ago

I got to play one exhibition game with him at least!

[–]psykomatt 12 points13 points ago

Did you get to play with and/or meet Iginla?

[–]NeohsReloaded 40 points41 points ago

Woah woah woah....damn this looks legit.

Pleasure to meet you, kid. But, as you know, I am required to hate you on principle.

Cheers!

For real though, good luck to you.

[–]mjc5077 15 points16 points ago*

How do you deal with just being handed a whole new set of teammates? It's like involuntarily changing families.

Edit: congratulations!

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 39 points40 points ago

I still play for the Tri City Americans in the Western Hockey League so it's not like I am getting traded from one team to another physically. I didn't know many of the flames players that well either. I'm excited about it, but only know about one person in the Canadiens organization so it's going to be cool to meet new people.

[–]mjc5077 3 points4 points ago

Oh nice well heres to hoping you see plenty of ice time in Montreal sooner rather than later!

[–]hypotheticalhighfive 2 points3 points ago

i think you guys ate at my restaurant when you played the Prince George Cougars :) Everyone noted how polite and respectful you guys were. Hope to feed you again!

[–]Pdotdot 27 points28 points ago

Do you think Dion Phaneuf is overrated?

[–]lovevolcano 12 points13 points ago

I'm another Flames fan sorry to see you get traded because I've been following your great season but best of luck in Montreal at least you are joining a premier franchise. In my NHL12 be a GM mode you're on my first line so congrats!

[–]vingt-deux 51 points52 points ago

First of all, as a habs fans, I welcome you here!

Now here's my question : Do you hate the Bruins?

[–]MrWizard87 10 points11 points ago

Bio says you were born in Lethbridge, so were you a Flames fan or an Oilers fan? If you were the latter, does this trade make it a bit easier to like them again?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 33 points34 points ago*

Was an Oilers fan growing up, but I was a Seguin fan in the 10 draft so ever since they selected Hall first overall I haven't really had a favorite team. Nothing against Hall, that was the same draft that the flames took me as well so I was in a bit of a moral dilemma.

[–]MrWizard87 17 points18 points ago

Better not let anyone in Montreal read that you are a fan of a Boston player ;)

Good luck in Montreal. Given that I'm a Leaf fan, hopefully I'm given the opportunity to hate you some day!

[–]mc66a 34 points35 points ago

Nonsense! I hate the Bruins more than Harry Potter hates Voldemort, yet I recognize and respect the awesomeness that is Tyler Seguin.

[–]livecoastal 4 points5 points ago

Marchand, on the other hand...

[–]LeMAD 4 points5 points ago

Same for me. The kid is the real deal.

[–]64bitrevolution 9 points10 points ago

did Hall do something to make you not like him? Just asking because that seems like a really bad reason to forget about your childhood team.

[–]MooseSteets 10 points11 points ago

Awww yeah

[–]Fedquip 2 points3 points ago

Great you like Seguin? Looks like you'll may have many opportunities to kick his ass on the ice now. Welcome to MTL!

[–]albh 10 points11 points ago

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 11 points12 points ago

Seems pretty accurate on the type of player I am.

[–]brokenseattle 10 points11 points ago

I'm sorry for screaming awful things about your mother the last time you guys played my Everett Silvertips. I had no idea you were a redditor. Now I'll just scream in obscure memes which will draw blank looks from those around me.

[–]martyshannon 30 points31 points ago

You got traded to Montreal? Well I guess I hate you now.

In all seriousness I don't have a question, I'm jealous of you because you're living the dream.

[–]chalms04 9 points10 points ago

Dear Patrick, Is it true that you were having difficulties signing an ELC with Calgary?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 25 points26 points ago

It was between the Flames and my agent.

[–]chalms04 11 points12 points ago

Thanks for your response and best of luck with your new team!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

How does that work? The agent must tell you how the discussions are going, no? Do you simply mandate him to fetch the max ELC contract?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

Hey man, it's not cool to leave Bryan hanging like that. Go see what he's messaging you about.

In all seriousness I've always wondered what it's like to be traded. Does it flatter you that Montreal picked you to sweeten the deal when maybe they could've picked another player in the system or gotten a draft pick instead? Are you looking forward to prospect camps and preseason scrimmages trying to impress a whole new set of coaches and teammates? Do you like poutine?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 13 points14 points ago

Yeah I remember my first camps with the Flames being full of nerves and so it got a lot easier once I knew I already had an impression on the staff and just had to do my thing so it will be interesting having to do it all over again. But they clearly had scouts watching me and I'd like to believe they liked what they saw so I just need to go in with the same attitude and do my best. This trade is different than a normal trade and I haven't been traded in the WHL so I'm not too sure what a real trade is like.

[–]Leido 7 points8 points ago

Congratulations Patrick, best of luck!

[–]ISISFieldAgent 6 points7 points ago

Good luck in Montreal! Hope you make it up to the show someday.

[–]Bellegr4ine 19 points20 points ago

I have no question for you, i'm just saying its nice to have you post it here. Good luck in you future!

[–]kmad 6 points7 points ago

What's your favorite hockey moment of your own career?

Also what's your favorite hockey moment ever?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 27 points28 points ago

-Tough to pick just one so a) Winning the western conference finals two years ago against the Vancouver Giants. (We went on to lose to the Calgary Hitmen in the finals) b) Getting drafted to the NHL. c) Scoring a hat trick in a 3-2 win against the Seattle Thunderbirds when I was 17.

-I really enjoyed watching Chicago win the cup a few years back because I am semi-friends with Kris Versteeg so that was awesome.

[–]FightingQuaker17 22 points23 points ago

I CAN BE YOUR FRIEND!

[–]kmad 44 points45 points ago

I really enjoyed watching Chicago win the cup

I don't think we can be friends.

[–]teknobo 14 points15 points ago

On the other hand, him and I can now be the best of friends.

[–]Rapturelover 21 points22 points ago

Winning the western conference finals two years ago against the Vancouver Giants

I don't think we can be friends.

[–]le_sean 17 points18 points ago

You're a redditor? I'm going to get your jersey ASAP.

[–]JackLalanne 10 points11 points ago

Hit me up in Montreal and I'll bring you to La Banquise for the best poutine in the city.

[–]funkyb 18 points19 points ago

I did not understand half those words, but if that is some sort of new food I want to try it too.

[–]Ahkahseekapoo 21 points22 points ago

You've never heard of poutine? I'm American and I know what that is. It's french fries covered in gravy and cheese curds. It's cream your pants delicious.

[–]Mcgyvr 2 points3 points ago

Watering mouth... must go eat poutine....

PS: We're gonna fuck you up Saturday. Just sayin'

[–]Ice_And_Fire 8 points9 points ago

You don't need to mention it, we're fully aware that it will happen.

[–]brenobah 5 points6 points ago

I've spent 6 hours in Montreal. I did two things: went to a Habs game, and went to La Banquise. Both were wonderful times.

[–]Gnome_de_Plume 29 points30 points ago

Are you excited at the thought of putting on the most famous and revered jersey in professional hockey? How's your French?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 57 points58 points ago

I considered my French to be fluent back in grade 9, but have used it very rarely since then so it is extremely rusty. I'm very excited with the trade, but am still very far off from the NHL so just have my WHL season in mind for now.

[–]TimeForSnacks 56 points57 points ago

grade 9

Yeah. He's gonna be ok.

[–]nogoodtrying 25 points26 points ago

That's almost as far as Ricky got.

[–]mattattaxx 3 points4 points ago

He got is grade 10 didn't he?

[–]calmlb 7 points8 points ago

Yeah he got his fuckin' grade 10.

[–]popups4life 3 points4 points ago

Now I'm going to have The Barenaked Ladies stuck in my head all day!

This is me in grade 9 baby, this is me in grade 9....

[–]Gnome_de_Plume 4 points5 points ago

You're having a great season out here in the west though, so it won't surprise me to see you up with the Habs in a couple of years.

And, thanks for doing the AMAA - very cool.

[–]BeBenNova 4 points5 points ago

Wanna practice your french with someone? i'm there if you need some WD-40 for that rust

Welcome to the organization!

[–]albh 4 points5 points ago

Do you feel different teams do a better job of developing talent like yourself?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 10 points11 points ago

Different players excel with different coaches and teammates.

[–]Rincey 5 points6 points ago

Hey there! Appreciate the AMA. I'm a Portland Winterhawks season ticket holder and pretty dedicated fan. Looking forward to seeing the Ams on Monday for the matinee (it'd be lovely if you let us beat you just this once, k thx). Just curious what the read is from a division rival on Portland's team/roster - guys like Ross and even Carruth, etc who clearly try to chirp - do you look forward to playing us, hate it, what? On my part I love watching Carruth play because he has so much personality, but I can definitely see how it'd be annoying as hell as an opponent!

Thanks a lot - mad respect for what WHL players go through to put on such awesome, high-level games for us fans in non-NHL cities.

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 8 points9 points ago

Ross is one of my best friends from back home actually. I am friends with Sven and Rattie and am friendly with a couple other guys on the team so it is weird, but we definitely play hard and maybe even harder because of the extra bragging rights.

[–]SexBobomb 4 points5 points ago

I think my twitter post (protected unfortunatly) sums it up - Patrick Holland - Redditor, tweeted about pokemon, habs prospect. Going to like this kid.

So naturally the important question is 'Bulbasaur, CHarmander, or Squirtle'

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 15 points16 points ago

Bulbasaur... not even once.... Charmander and Squirtle rotate turns with me, but I ALWAYS get a Magikarp and level it up to Gyarados. Imo most OP pokemon.

[–]FireisprettyOkay 2 points3 points ago

And to follow up, I'd like to personally congratulate Patrick Holland on becoming a Pokemon Master.

[–]denbub 5 points6 points ago

Could you encourage more hockey players to AMA's?

[–]Chilipeno 2 points3 points ago

Hey man, congrats on your year to date. How often do you or other players check out hockey forums, ie. hfboards and etc?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 36 points37 points ago

We check out our team's forum from time to time just for a good laugh. A lot of the stuff is really opinionated and have no facts behind them so it's pretty humorous. We see a lot of things about how if we lose 1 game the coach should be fired and stuff. Pretty dumb.

[–]KillEmAll83 23 points24 points ago

Haha, I think that's how most forums work.

Good game - Coach of the year, everyone to all-star game

Bad game - Fire coach, blow up team

[–]Eso 12 points13 points ago

As a Canucks fan, reading forums is like this:

After a loss, 90% of people are calling for Luongo's head.

After a win, 50% of people are calling for Luongo's head.

[–]Jankinator 5 points6 points ago

On my favorite Caps blog, some readers treat the comments sections like a giant forum post and just continue on when a new piece is posted. On every single post, there are recommendations for firing the coach (not so much now), players, the GM, and criticisms of the owner. Even after wins. They would not be satisfied unless the Caps team and organization was good enough to be guaranteed the Stanley Cup.

[–]Brandon0 2 points3 points ago

Favorite hockey-centered movie.

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 16 points17 points ago

Hard to pick just one. Young Gun, Slapshot 1-2, Mystery Alaska, Miracle. Probably forgetting a couple. Oh and the Mighty Ducks trilogy.

[–]brenobah 3 points4 points ago

no Youngblood!? Sacrilege!

[–]kittyroux 23 points24 points ago

There is no Slapshot 2.

[–]irishf1 2 points3 points ago

Hey dude, Bruins fan here, but I have a friend who has the exact same name as ya, jokes now he's a Hab haha. How do you feel your season has gone so far with Tri-City?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 9 points10 points ago

It's been going really well in Tri-City. We have a great group of players and we are playing really well. The guys are awesome off the ice as well. So much fun going to the rink everyday and I couldn't be happier with my own numbers. Again it's the team first and we are first in the league right now so that's the best part.

[–]baultista 3 points4 points ago

  • Can you tell us a bit about the worst game of your hockey career?
  • Worst hockey-related injury?
  • What grade did you receive in 10th grade math?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 25 points26 points ago

-I've had lots of bad games, but I consider myself pretty good at learning from the mistakes and then forgetting about it so I couldn't tell you the worst one. -Maybe a slightly separated shoulder? I've been extremely lucky as far as injuries go so far. *knocks on wood -In math, I was always around 92-96%. Both my parents are doctors so education was, and is, a big deal to me.

[–]Samizz 2 points3 points ago

Is it true that there was a bit of a dispute about your ELC with the Flames?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 9 points10 points ago

Who knows.. =]

[–]Ob-La-Di 3 points4 points ago

Do you/have you ever collected hockey cards? If so, have any of yourself?

Best of luck man! :)

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 8 points9 points ago

Had a lot of hockey cards when I was younger, but not anymore. Our team makes cards so there are some of me around.

[–]Beaker17 3 points4 points ago

Don't worry Pat, I'm in anglophone living in Montreal. Basic french is a plus, but you'll get around just fine in Montreal with English alone. Don't think Canadiens fans are crazy- I mean, yes, we are, we're emotional rollercoaster-type of fans- except we always love the player who "wears his heart on his sleeve." We just like seeing effort. Keep it up buddy, you seem to be doing well for yourself. Best city in Canada ;)

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 4 points5 points ago

Our game tonight is being played on Shaw TV if anybody wants to check it out. 7:30pm PST. I'm not sure if it will be played in all regions, but worth checking out if you're interested!

[–]tomot 7 points8 points ago

Good luck!

[–]Hammerklavier 6 points7 points ago

Can you still drop back to r/hockey every once in a while after you get called up?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 28 points29 points ago

It's not very likely that I ever make the NHL, but I'll do my best and if I ever do I'll be sure to redo this AMA.

[–]crystalcastles 20 points21 points ago

Why do you think that's not likely? You have a whole subreddit rooting for you now. That's like a superpower.

[–]jbillzz33 2 points3 points ago

Congrats? You think you'll just end up in their system for a while or do you think you'd get a shot at the big time anytime soon?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 37 points38 points ago

This is something that I'll never know for sure, but I'm currently unsigned so hoping that Montreal and my agent will come to an agreement and then we'll see from there. I'm going to do my best, but I don't see any NHL time in the near future. For me it's going to be a matter of playing really well in their AHL team around the same time as the big club suffering an unfortunate injury and me getting the call. First I have to make the AHL though!

[–]mc66a 10 points11 points ago

The GM seemed really excited about you as a prospect in his french interview. The team seems to be going with younger guys (especially this year). Here's hoping you'll be part of the future of this organisation for the upcoming years. Keep the positive attitude!

[–]jbillzz33 8 points9 points ago

Well cheers for doing more than most of us ever will!

[–]Gnome_de_Plume 1 point2 points ago

It's a positive that they want you, though.

[–]Stromster 2 points3 points ago

If you were to sign with any NHL team, besides MTL, who would it be?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 20 points21 points ago

This is a hard choice to make for a young guy like me. On the one hand we watch things like the HBO 24/7 and see those young exciting teams that look so appealing, but on the other hand, you want to go to an older team that would potentially have a spot for you in their lineup in the near future. Maybe Phoenix?

[–]3hirty6ix 39 points40 points ago

You mean Quebec?

[–]emacna1 2 points3 points ago

You mean Kansas City?

[–]NigelMK 5 points6 points ago

Hamil- ah never mind...

[–]psykomatt 2 points3 points ago

You've got pretty solid numbers this season. It would be cool to see you playing for the Habs in a few years. You know that Carey Price played for Tri-City, right?

I've got some questions:

  • How are you enjoying your new-found fame?
  • What's it like playing in the WHL?
  • Who was your fave NHL team growing up?
  • Whatcha torrenting?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 14 points15 points ago

  • It's pretty cool, but a lot to handle. The thing is that I know it will all be back to normal in a couple days. It was the same when I got drafted as well so it will blow over soon. -I love the WHL and my team. Can't say enough good things about it all. -Favorite team was the Oilers; player was Ales Hemsky. -I'm not torrenting anything..... =]

[–]hugemadeafan 2 points3 points ago

Hey, congrats on getting traded hope it works out. My question is what kind of gear do you use?

Bauer sticks (total ones 95flex with drury curve) Bauer skates (total ones) rbk and ccm everything else. (they sponsor our league so we have to use it.)

[–]erl 2 points3 points ago

dude, patrick swayze? i'd wish you luck but, i'm a b's fan for goin on 40 years, but since you're a fellow redditor the best i can do for you is hope you get traded again, otherwise it's "You Go to hell. You Go to hell and You die"

[–]brownmagician 2 points3 points ago

Hi Patrick, are you brushing up and getting ahead on learning some French?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 12 points13 points ago

I was in french immersion from grade 1-9 so I was fluent at one point. It's super rusty at this point, but if I were to spend a good amount of time in Montreal I'm sure I'd pick it back up.

[–]milkysongs 2 points3 points ago

Can you tell us any secrets or a look in behind the scenes in the dressing room? Also, favourite subreddit (besides the obvious r/hockey)?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 12 points13 points ago

I like funny, pics, science. WTF can be good if nobody is around to be like 'wtf are you looking at'. Aww is really redundant, f7u12 can be really good but i find it really inconsistent. Also like adviceanimals.

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 10 points11 points ago

Nothing too secret in the dressing room. We got a ping pong table this year and we play a ton before and after practices. I have been the number one ranked player in our rankings from the beginning of the season, but the rest of the guys got frustrated with me winning all the time so they switched it to a doubles tournament and I paired up with one of the weaker players just for fun. We watch a lot of movies and play xbox, etc, in our free time.

[–]jimstr 2 points3 points ago*

Thanks for doing this!

e also very important:

PLEASE DON'T TALK ABOUT REDDIT TO THE FRENCH MEDIA! thanks!

[–]vacuum2440 5 points6 points ago

How much time a week do you spend browsing r/hockey? I'm curious because you must be pretty tied up with hockey. Are we your go-to place for the latest hockey news, jokes, articles etc?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 14 points15 points ago

I am subscribed to it, but don't look too often. I checked a lot during the World Juniors and whenever something is going down. I am mostly interested in the news of my own league.

[–]BigBreastLover 1 point2 points ago

That's so awesome. Welcome to the extended Canadiens family. Say hi to your potential future teammate Brendan Gallagher tomorrow!

[–]fitltid 1 point2 points ago

How do you feel about developing through the WHL instead of other options, like college and other leagues? Why did you decide to play there, if you did make the decision.

What's the social life in the WHL? After seeing 24/7 two years in a row, you see teams on the road playing the credit card game and such. Is it similar or completely different?

Any good pranks that you have been a part of? There are some good ones about water bottles being unscrewed for guys and not celebrating goals and such.

Did you work with Brent Sutter at camp? Does he ever smile?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 17 points18 points ago

If you're a good player then you'll excel at any league, but as far as I know, the WHL has been the best for me. I decided to play here for the WHL Scholarship that they give the players. (One year of school paid every year that you play in the league. So basically if you play four years in the WHL and then don't go to professional hockey, you get four years of university paid for.) Brent Sutter was awesome. That whole family is awesome. We don't make much money so we don't do that credit card stuff and in the NHL they take care of themselves whereas in the WHL we get all our meals organized for us and such. Not much of a prankster.

[–]ohciel 1 point2 points ago*

I'm sure you will excel and play well in your new club, but how do you feel about the issues hovering over Montreal right now? Does the coaching situation concern you? Or is it pretty irrelevant given how exciting the opportunity is? Of course, best of luck and congratulations!

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 8 points9 points ago

A lot of things are out of our control as players. We just need to keep our head down and work hard every day. I just worry about trying to win every game for my current team and helping in any way I can.

[–]MooseSteets 1 point2 points ago

First off, congratulations. Second, I would like to hear your thoughts about the Bruins - Canadiens rivalry. Sorry you are now on the wrong side :)

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 3 points4 points ago

I grew up around the Oilers Flames rivalry so I didn't know too much about the east,

[–]SpaceVikings 1 point2 points ago

Bonne chance!

[–]Oleelee 1 point2 points ago

I played in the OHL 3 years ago, I wanted to play in the WHL though. Congrats though, a couple of my buddies are in the NHL now

[–]Brettersson 1 point2 points ago

were you also traded mid-game?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 16 points17 points ago

Mid-dinner.

[–]pseudoart 1 point2 points ago

Remember to harness the power of reddit to further your career. The all star voting in NHL comes to mind. ;) And congratulations, best of luck to you. :)

[–]JohnnysGotHisDerp 1 point2 points ago

As someone who just began to learn to play hockey this past year, i have to ask...

any pointers?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 4 points5 points ago

Just have fun. Everybody plays best when they are having fun. And that applies the most to people who take it seriously as a career so it should definitely apply to people who just play for 'fun'. As for actual pointers, I'd say the biggest tip I could give somebody is to learn to play with their head up at all times. If you can skate with the puck on your stick while keeping your head up the whole time you get a huge advantage.

[–]Soutael 1 point2 points ago

Might as well come on over to r/montreal it would be really cool if you come out to a meet-up if and when you're in town. Also it's a good community where you can maybe get some idea of the culture here. Also, happy to have you, best of luck.

[–]RiperSnifle 1 point2 points ago

Best of luck until you play the Senators :)

[–]chizzle 1 point2 points ago

If you make the NHL one day (hopefully you will!), will you still Reddit while traveling? Because you better.

[–]thenoble1 1 point2 points ago

I am a Tri City native and an Oilers fan to it's cool to see an Ams player/Oilers fan on Reddit. Good luck in Montreal!

[–]GenerationGreg 1 point2 points ago

How much free time do you have as a professional hockey player? What do you fill your free time with?

[–]MADBARZ 1 point2 points ago

I hate the Habs... but reading this AMA makes me like you a lot... You're ok, Mr. Holland.

[–]Snodgrass82 1 point2 points ago

I've been a Habs fan (by default and later by choice) my whole life.

1st of all Welcome!

2nd - If you don't know any yet, learn a few lines of french to address the media in Montreal ... this will earn you SO MUCH respect with the locals. Even if it is terrible, putting in the effort with pay off. The media and fans are ruthless if you get off on the wrong foot. (Let me know if you need any advise or help in this regards).

3rd - Please help, we need a motherfucking spark!

[–]Marcob10 1 point2 points ago

Can you put a puck in a net? Cause we're gonna need a lot of that in the next few years.

[–]loranis 1 point2 points ago

Whats your temple run high score?

[–]flawedless 1 point2 points ago

I'm on Vancouver Island, so we're pretty close at the moment. Ever been over here? How much time do you guys get to yourself on a road trip?

[–]APPaholic47 1 point2 points ago

As a young player yourself where do you rank Jeff Skinner amoung the young stars in the game? I feel like he is incredible and doesnt get the recognition he should because he plays for Carolina. Until the concussion he carried the team as a 19 year old this year. He has some insane moves and amazing balance for someone his size. I feel if he played on a team with a couple of more stars to take the pressure off him his stats would be up there with Eberle, Seguin, Nugent-Hopkins and others this season. What do you think?

[–]huskerfan4life520 1 point2 points ago

Sorry to see you go, but I wish the best of luck to you in Montreal. How does it feel to get traded? It seems a lot of players get offended when traded away.

Also, could you describe your time in Calgary? Great fans or great-est fans?

[–]mr_mojorisin23 1 point2 points ago

Do you speak French? I heard that's kind of a big deal there...

[–]nextdoorwilly 1 point2 points ago

what are some of the fun, traditions and team activites you have done? and for which teams?

[–]patrickhollandwhl[S] 4 points5 points ago

A lot of the guys on my team have Mario Kart for Nintendo DS and we link up to play 8 man Mario Kart games on the bus. This is awesome.

[–]mikey420 1 point2 points ago

just signed a 3 year deal congrats!!! how much you raking in?
