Not sure if they were horrible or not, but I totally rooted for Carthage in the Punic Wars.

I also tend to root for the people which the Roman faced during their expansionist wars. I can't help but smile when I read an account of 'barbarians' kicking their butts. My two favourites:

  • It took about 30 years for the Romans to conquer and keep the small area that is Wales. They just kept getting decimated by fast guerilla tactics. By the end, they were so pissed that the emperor apparently said that he would erase even the name of the Silures, the main tribe in the south-east of Wales, which was causing trouble at the time.

  • When the emperor Valerian decided to attack the Persian empire, he headed the army but was utterly defeated and captured. He spent the rest of his days as a prisoner in Persia, near Shiraz (you can visit the palace) and was executed after some time, some say by being flayed alive, others by having molten gold poured in his mouth. There are dozens of carvings all around Iran commissioned by the Persian emperor to show everyone how big his dick was.

I always feel bad and root for Japan in WWII. I know they did horrible things but lopsided losses like the battle of the Philippine Sea and the sinking of the Yamato get them my sympathy. Also all the soldiers facing larger, better equipped American forces and getting wiped out to practically the last man. They had a lotta gumption too. It was just never a fair fight.

Cheering for the underdog is pretty universal.

I too kinda cheer for the Confederates because it was about more than slavery which everyone forgets. Unfortunately they could have won the war with the first battle had they pushed onto Washington.

The Nazi's were not the underdogs, they were retards for starting a war on two fronts there is a difference. While I always thought the Russians were the underdogs having to throw everything at the enemy because they had no where to go. For example battle of Stalingrad the Germans could have retreated anytime until they where pinched all because what? Hitler wanted the city because of the name. Not to mention diverting resources from the front lines so they could exterminate the Jews.

I mean if Napoleon could not take France what chance did Hitler have. Now talking about Napoleon, a real underdog story was the Battle of Waterloo.

I guess I better clarify my rooting somewhat because I agree that it was a case of Hitler being a dick and biting off more than he could chew. The people who I end up rooting for are the Wehrmacht as they keep pulling off this seemingly impossible victories in '41 and then find themselves totally hemmed in not only by the enemy, but also by their own leadership. When you get to '43 onwards and the odds swing against them (especially post Bagration), I still find myself amazed that they just keep hanging on.

And yes, depite being British, I can't help but cheer for Napoleon at Waterloo. That guy had balls in abundance.

I occasionally wonder what it would've been like had the Nazis invented a high altitude, long range, heavy jet bomber, bombing the UK with complete impunity.
