Hell I can say "meow". I can say "moo", for twenty bucks I'll call the guy a chickenfucker. walks up to car License and registration... chicken fucker. BACOCK!!!

As an aside...the people Farva calls a chicken fucker are actually his parents IRL. Yes I watched this movie with directors commentary! :D

Hey Farva! what's the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy shit on the walls and the mozzarella sticks?

Only if he tells the reason why there are no new Ecco games.

I'm assuming he could answer that question. He's talked before in what he had planned for the third Ecco

Wasn't there an Ecco game for the Dreamcast? A game about a Dolphin is kinda weird actually.

[–]Prax150 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No weirder than a magical plumber who has to kill a bunch of sliding mushrooms in order to save a princess from a evil turtle :P

[–]Jurynelson 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Gameplay-wise it was kind of a weird thing in gaming. It was oddly meditative and deceptively open-ended. Remove the specifics and Mario was about a character who overcomes obstacles to reach a goal.

Ecco is about an Ocean whether there's water or not.

OP: YES. I would be interested in an AMA from the creator of Ecco the Dolphin.

[–]bklj2007 1 point2 points ago

"...overcomes obstacles to reach a goal."

Isn't that almost every video game ever?

[–]ingolemo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure it's everything that has any characters with motivations of some sort.

[–]Jurynelson 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, yes. But it was in response to saying the game was about crawling mushrooms. The mushrooms are just what we call the obstacles.

The Dreamcast game wasn't created by the original creator. I remember reading an interview with the original creator about notes he kept regarding the plot a third game would have.

I think the interview is on http://ecco-darksea.com/ somewhere.

I would like to ask if the Ecco games were actually meant for children, what with all the nightmare-fuel inducing segments. When I first played it as an adult it was like "Ooh cute dolphins! Relaxing, talking to the rest of your pod, swimming in the Ocean wait what the fuck is happening." And then you have the grotesque alien morphological womb levels ::shudder::

[–]annunziata 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it did get kinda dark at times. I have no idea what I was thinking at the time but it wasnt for children. I made ecco Jr. for little kids. :)

[–]jimmux 1 point2 points ago

[–]Jurynelson 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, what kind of asshole would think a combination cell phone and gaming system would be a good idea?

Oh, wait

[–]verisimilarity -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It wasn't designed for gaming.

[–]Jurynelson 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which ironically made it a much better gaming device.

But the point stands.

[–]verisimilarity 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think it made it a better gaming device. I don't think there was a causal relationship. I think it took off because it was just a better device in general and funded by a much more successful company and marketed better.

[–]mrtherapist 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did you just call apple more successful than nokia? Maybe in profit, but definitely not in market penetration.

http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/02/daily_chart_mobile-phone_market

[–]panfist 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being more profitable with less market penetration means that make more money by doing less. I would say that qualifies as "better."

Would you rather be a company that sells a million phones for $10 each, with huge overhead costs, supply chains, and all the other problems that go along with being huge, or sell ten phones for a million dollars each? Yeah, I'm exaggerating; shoot me.

By the way the last Apple product I bought was a 2nd gen ipod, so I'm no fanboy.

[–]panfist 0 points1 point ago

[–]frenchtoaster 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jurynelson is claiming that the article you linked to is saying that apple is better than nokia, contrary to what you are saying.

[–]Jurynelson 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No you aren't. But that article does.

[–]mrtherapist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Both Apple and Nokia have different market positions. They satisfy different niches. Market penetration matters. Apple can't sell an iPhone to everyone. The dumbphone still has a huge market and Nokia still has more broad range growth potential than Apple.

Apple is like a 30 story skyscraper that covers one square city block. Nokia is like a one level house on 35 square city blocks.

Apple can only grow so much in the phone market until they need to move horizontally to a different city block.

Nokia is bigger and has more growth potential if they can turn every block into an incrementally priced dwelling.

You may not be an apple fanboy but I am called it at times; I have stocks and products etc and defend them with passion. Margins be damned, if Apple is not selling an iPhone to lesser-developed-countries then Nokia is still going to keep existing and scooping up that margin. $10 of profit on a phone in a Djibouti is still $10 of profit.

[–]Jurynelson 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with you. It is a better device in general, and it is also a better device for gaming.

All's I'm saying is, don't be like, "What the fuck were you thinking coming up with the N-Gage?" when it was a really great idea.

I know you didn't say it, but that was the point.

[–]throwaway0109 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While the first N-Gage was awful, the second one was actually pretty decent. Got rid of that sidetalking garbage and during its time, the S60 OS was pretty powerful.

I'd love to know if he had a hand in selecting the musical soundtrack for the Sega CD version of the game. An incredible soundtrack for an unbelievably innovative game experience:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_LKRBP69ag

The whole soundtrack is definitely worth a listen. Some powerful tracks in there.

[–]annunziata 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As I mentioned the entire body of music was composed and preformed by my good friend Spencer Nilsen. I am proud to have worked with him on the project and hope I get to again on a new ecco! I agree, powerful stuff.

[–]vplatt 2 points3 points ago

[–]annunziata 0 points1 point ago

The original idea was you just happen to be in the air when the Vortex did it's feeding thing. I.e. You got lucky. But I guess it feels like you trigger the event, which you do. I can still hear that sound in my head.

[–]icansmackhas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, I would ask about the origin of the name and whether or not it is inspired/influenced by Dr. John Lilly. He was a neuroscientist who did a lot of unique studies including many with dolphins. He also was a heavy user of psychdelics, one of which is Ketamine and he was on a heavy dose when an extradimensional intelligence contacted him and informed that he and all humans function at the bidding of some higher sentience which was referred to as E.C.C.O. or the Earth Coincidence Control Office. It gets a lot nuttier but I'm facinated by this man and used to love Ecco the Dolphin and have wondered about that for a long time.

[–]Heartnotes 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a great question.

[–]icansmackhas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks, I never thought there would be a chance to learn more.

[–]annunziata 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, I was inspired by John Lilly. I read a few of his books but I didn't take any LSD (seriously.) The name ecco did not come from Lilly, however. That's either pure coincidence or sub conscious plagiarism. Another HUGE inspiration was a book called Sounding, by Hank Searls, which I highly recommend.

[–]Br3nd4n 0 points1 point ago

Any chance of also getting an AMA from the creator of Dolphin Olympics 2?

[–]Heartnotes 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hell fucking yeah! I loved Tides of Time as a kid, and I think that the level design, overall story, puzzles, boss battles, and even some of the plot was great. It was my favorite game on SEGA as a kid.

The final battle with the Vortex Queen still gives me the shivers. I mean, I thought the game was over, then you have to go through Atlantis which is quite possibly one of the three creepiest levels in the game... and then the ending. I remember actually crying at the end.

Anyway, I always wondered... Does Ecco ever find his way back home after getting lost in the mists of time?.

[–]annunziata 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ecco goes back in time at the end of the game, to Atlantis before the votex attack. But don't tell anyone.

In my first year of college i thought of an idea for a third ecco game that would involve a human, but she would be prehistoric human. It was awesome and totally assumed that there were no humans in the world of ecco the dolphin. Years later i went back to ToT snd there were sunken ships.

I didnt make this comment to contribute so much as i have difficulty concentrating and don't know how to keep track of a thread without making a comment :(

Edit:ecco, not zelda.

[–]PostCaptainKat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You know why ecco was a great game? Despite being essentially a 2-D game, it felt 3-D (If any of you are too young to remember, true 3D used to be impossible, and game sizes were limited by the hardware). Playing ecco you really felt like you were swimming around in the ocean. Gave your hands terrible cramps if you made him swim too much though.

Incidentally, yes.
