I cried a little at the beginning of ME2. For a few reasons, one it was a brutal start, two I had just finished ME1 and felt the character(s) were part of me, three I just build my new rig and it was beautiful.

PST was a little tough on the emotions as well. What makes the nature of a man?

In ME2 when Shepard gets the Normandy back. Girlfriends out, a wee bit drunk and I'm fistpumping Jersey Shore-style and bawling like a girl at the same time. Yeah, I'm 28 btw.

My brother saved over my KOTOR game, deleting hours of playtime. I got pissed off so I deleted his save too. Turns out he didn't delete it, you have a seperate profile for each character and hitting a key cycles through them...

Planescape Torment really brought a tear to my eye and I felt quite engaged. Same with Baldur's Gate 2, but the ending of P:T and a few moments (with Deionarra)... man, I get a bit of a thick throat just thinking about it.

Tali's loyalty mission in ME2 had some pretty intense moments (like the monitor which plays the woman recording for her kids). I didn't cry, per se, but it did tug on the ol' heartstrings.

Aeris's death in FFVII got a few tears. :'(
I didn't cry, but killing the colossi in Shadow of the Colossus was really depressing.

[–]IntergalaticJebus 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see many people post here about her death specifically but I'd would say it is more of the ending of any game( or any good story that is sad). After finishing games like ff7,ff8, legend of dragoon, diablo1-2, resident evil, etc, I feel like I lived through their story and their world.

It's the concept that every story will eventually end that is sad to me. I just wish those stories would never end! I feel that I want to see these game characters die of age or something for proper closure. For example in Legend of Dragoon, Dart and Shana is just getting married at the end of the game! Whaaat.....Another adventure can continue it's not really the end yet dammit.

[–]MrBagels 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just wish those stories would never end!

I agree completely. I get this feeling a lot when a good show comes to an end and I never get to see a satisfying resolution.

[–]anji123 4 points5 points ago

Dude I know they were supposed to be giant monsters but killing them still felt like butchering animals for some reason. I mean technically they were just defending themselves against an unknown attacker.

[–]lethic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That ambiguity is MEANT to be there I believe. You're supposed to feel like a huge dick killing some of those guys, especially the ones that don't aggro and don't fight back.

4 more or less explains everything you need to know from 3 (and 1 and 2, for that matter), but there will definitely be a few references to 3's bosses and fan-service moments that you won't be able to enjoy. the major plot points are all rehashed in 4's cutscenes/flashback moments

and I think mgs3 is one of the few games that no ps3 can play, unfortunately. could be wrong?

I don't remember if FFVII had it but in the past there has been a distinction between death and falling in battle. A felled character was considered KO not dead. Phoenix down can recover from a KO and the names of Life spells are just a metaphor.

Yeah, it's silly, thats FF for you.

[–]bbrizzi 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty much like in FFV when Galuf dies they try using potions/healing spells/phoenix downs on him but none of it works. =(

Don't even get me started wit King Zeza...

[–]Skanker 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually I thought they explained that he used up all his life energy when he went crazy against Ex-Death and couldn't revive him because of that. He just burned himself out standing up against the power of the crystals and the big bad guy. But yeah, Zeza sort of blew into pieces for no reason at all. How dumb can you get? "I'll stay behind and make sure the machine blows up!"

There are so many emotional moments in FF6. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it. One particularly sad moment was Setzer's flashback scene in the world of ruin that touch on his backstory with Daryl. But then there was also the scene where Cyan has to say goodbye to his wife and child while they depart on the train. It goes on and on, though, and there are probably at least seven scenes that get me choked up in that game.

When Crono died in Chrono Trigger, then going to the End of Time and hearing that song as a 'tribute' to him :(

[–]RSquared 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The ending with Marle and Crono beneath the tree got to me (probably because it's the only "romantic" ending), though I think I got more chills from the Magus/Frog ending.

[–]onthesub 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I loved Chrono Trigger because I really cared about the characters. If Crono was in my group, so was Marle, if I could help it. Usually if Lucca was in my group, I would pair her up with Robo too. It was pointless, but the characters were so human that I practically felt obligated.

[–]ThwompThwomp 1 point2 points ago

I haven't, but I've played games that have left feelings with me for days after. Kind of like after watching a great movie or reading a great book. There's been few books or movies that have made me cry, and I think it's doubtful I'll ever find a game that will.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not cried, but I've felt pretty sad in two occasions:

1 - Deus Ex: Invisible War - When I found Leo converted into an Omar and with second thoughts about finishing the process, I didn't care much about him before that, but at that moment I had a huge sense of pity for him and gave him 1k credits or whatever it was that he asked me for;

2 - Grand Theft Auto IV - I tried the deal ending (my original choice was revenge), and when after killing Dimitri Niko said "Roman has never hurt anyone" it was also quite a sad moment complete with the stormy weather (not sure whether that was scripted or random) at night.

The end of FF13. The combination of the music, the fact that one of your characters was visibly tortured for about 3 minutes just before that, was really both a sad/happy ending pulling on multiple emotional strings.

The end of Lunar: Silver Star Story. Much the same reason.

Not afraid to admit it, either. It's part of what I feel makes a game good (at least RPGs) - its ability to get you to empathize with the characters in it, to feel them as if they were real.

The only emotional reaction games can ever inspire in me is fear, or possibly intense anger, but I've never been pulled into a story enough to care about the characters and events to the point where I'd feel genuinely happy or sad for them, especially not to the point of shedding tears.

And, yeah, I've played all the classics. Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, FF7, whatever. They're just games.

Edit: Please don't downvote me if you disagree, I'm stating my opinion calmly and rationally and without passing judgment on others, and I certainly think I'm contributing to this discussion. The OP was not posted as a "Yes or Yes" question.

so you feel like you've never connected with a game or a character?

[–]oobey -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, never. I don't get emotionally invested in movies, either. I just don't understand how people can form emotional ties to purely fictional constructs. Anytime I start to I'm always reminded of the fact that I'm just reacting to the output of some anonymous writer somewhere, and that none of this is really happening. Those aren't real people or events. Aeris didn't really "die," she was never alive. All you ever saw were data structures and game mechanics.

I just don't understand how people can truly care about fake things. This isn't to say I'm not interested in the stories, I am, but only because I enjoy hearing a tale and seeing what sort of twists or developments the writers have in store. I'm interested, but never to the level of being personally invested.

seeing your inability to connect with characters in fictional work truely saddens me.

Yeah. Playing Heavy Rain was really underwhelming for me for basically that reason. When I did The Shark I killed that guy without a moment's hesitation and didn't think twice afterwards. He's just another entry in a long list of 'Enemies Killed to Achieve My Goal.'

This bugs the shit out of me, I'm sorry. It's really hard to believe you've never once felt any kind of emotion for anything in games, movies, etc. Nobody breaks down to their knees, shakes their fists to the heavens and screams "NOOOOOOOO!" when something unfavorable happens to a character, but you mean to tell me that nothing ever made you go "Huh, I like Character X. Sure hope he/she/it doesn't get killed."

By looking at everything at a purely mechanical standpoint, you're missing the point of every movie, book, game, etc you've ever experienced.

[–]graysonh 1 point2 points ago

I have the same strain of disinterest in the livelihood of fictional characters. I just could never emotionally care.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't either. Sure when a good character dies, the most I've ever thought is 'aww that sucked'. I see people here harping on about MGS4. To me it was just melodramatic boredom. same goes for HL2ep2; the most I thought was 'huh... game over'. Red Dead Redemption keeps getting mentioned, but all I thought was "well that was stupid, how could I kill all of them?".

Feeling emotions while reading or watching fiction is something that most of us can't control. Of course we know that it's fake, but part of what makes these things entertaining for us is that they do elicit emotion. How do you react to tragedy in real life?

[–]oobey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Calmly until I'm somewhere in private, then I break down when no one can see me. But someone has to keep their head cool and deal with things. It's why I am the way I am towards games/movies/etc -- anytime I start to feel emotional reactions, I always keep reminding myself it's all fake until I've detached myself again.

A technique I use is to try to obsessively focus on special effects, production techniques, and any other mechanical aspect, until I remember it's all just a grand illusion.

The Halo series was pretty much FUCK YEAH moments all the way through, but when I realized that Master Chief's story was over, I couldn't help but get a bit depressed. I've been following his adventure ever since I was but a wee lass and all of a sudden he's gone. Oh man, Reach is gonna have the biggest downer ending ever.

Valkyria Chronicles - When Isara and Selvaria died. Hell, I grew really attached to a lot of the characters in that game. I know I'd cry manly tears if Jann ever died, though.

Star Control 2, the beginning of the Yehat rebellion. Never mind that it's a speech by a pteranodon with a ridiculous Scottish accent - it's the tipping point of a conflict between the loyalties and principles of an alien species that's very serious about both its loyalties and its principles. I mean the "this is what defines us" sort of serious, and with those two things being in direct conflict with each other. You can bring them something that finally tips the balance... and plunges them into a bloody civil war. I still get shivers from that scene, and I'm pretty sure that the first time I heard it, I cried.

I got choked up at the end of BG2, when your whole party gets really gung-ho about finishing off the big bad even though most of them had gone through some pretty horrible shit simply for associating with me (I had kept Minsc, Jaheira and Imoen). They really had no reason to be that loyal to me, yet there they were.

FF7, when Aeris died, I got some dust on my eyes. Also the ending on Chrono Trigger on the Snes and when I saw the remade intro for the PS with the music, it reminded me of the game, just check the video until the first 35 seconds and it makes you feel along with the story if you played it how it was both a quest and a story about friendship http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dgk5cUGsz-U

End of MGS3.

For some reason when you finished the fight with boss and killed her to become big boss.

For some reason that was really emotional for me. Probably because she was your sort of adopted mother.
