A lot of people don't like them, but I like the How To Reassess Your Chess book and workbook. It's a nice change of pace from the "find the mate in 3" books and the "sparsely annotated GM games" books

I like most of Bruce Pandelfini's books.

The book that got me motivated to study tactics was De La Maza. But you can find most of the text online. The best tactics book I've found is Sharpen Your Tactics.

Chernev's "Logical Chess: Move by move"

It's kind of a dinosaur, but I think it put me on the right track.
