You really can't go wrong with Puerto Rico or Dominion.

Without really knowing your tastes, it's hard to just throw out recommendations. Have you looked at the common game suggestion threads on the right hand side of this page? Do you peruse boardgamegeek at all? If not, do that too.

Dominion is a must have. Puerto Rico is amazing and certainly deserving of all the love. You might also look at Race for the Galaxy which is a card game that shares a lot of similarities with Puerto Rico.

Unfortunately I didn't notice the sidebar until I made this post. I love Carcassonne, and really enjoy Settlers. I have never played Risk, which confuses people. I also tend to like card based games, played a lot os Magic, fair amount of Munchkin. I do hang out on boardgamegeek here and there, I've been on it all day at work today and I think I'm overwhelmed.

I'd say get a deck building game like dominion. One of my first few purchases was 7 Wonders, and my group loves that. Pandemic, Stone Age, Ticket to Ride Europe, or Survive would all by good games to expand

Is there a reason you reccommend Europe over the original Ticket to Ride? That's another one I'm leaning towards.

The Europe map is more complex and interesting, plus the game offers the addition of train stations, which are a neat tool. Marklin is good, too, but adds too much with the passengers, IMO.

I would add that you should definitely pick up a version of TTR for your collection. It doesn't necessarily offer new complexity, but it is such an entertaining system with long-term playability.

Dominion, as others have said, is a no-brainer. Puerto Rico and Race for the Galaxy never grabbed me, though. That's the thing: with this hobby, you have to be prepared to throw down $40 and end up disappointed sometimes. Games that seem like sure bets because they're in the top 50 on Board Game Geek aren't guaranteed entertainment for everyone.

I would also recommend Stone Age, based on our shared appreciation for Settlers and Carcassone. It's a step up in depth, but not too far.

Europe has a few extra bells and whistles. I don't actually own it, but i have Nordic Countries, which actually has even less complexity. Both, however, are more complex than the US version which is just basic set collection on rails (with destinations). They're all good though.

Dominion is a great deck building game, but if you really do enjoy MTG I would recommend Thunderstone. Very similar concept, but with the added bonus of fighting monsters, playing heroes, equipping weapons, etc. It's in my top 5, and one that hits my table constantly.

Check youtube for walkthroughs and you can get a pretty good idea how the games play. Like others said, you can't go wrong with either Dominion or Puerto Rico. Both are excellent games that should find a home in your game nights for a long long time.

Because of your background with Magic: The Gathering, I would recommend Dominion or 7 Wonders. This review compares them nicely.

I also recommend watching the rest of the episodes. Shut Up & Sit Down is my favorite BG review show.

It sounds like you have a wide variety of interests. Settlers and Carcassonne are both titles that don't have direct confrontation, where Magic and Munchkin are both very confrontational.

I would recommend Kingsburg as a Euro style game that has the same kind of confrontation that Carc and settlers has (no direct conflict, but a lot of jockeying for position) There are dice in the game too, which gives it a little bit of randomness, which you might be open too, seeing as you enjoy Munchkin and settlers. This is still one of my favorites, and I have a hefty collection.

Dominion is fun as well, but if you prefer the confrontational aspect of Magic, then you might enjoy Nightfall, which is a deck building game similar to Dominion, but also lets you attack your neighbors like in Magic. It has a cool chaining mechanic as well, so there is very little downtime in the game.

If you really prefer card games, you might want to take a look at San Juan. It's like Puerto Rico in card game format, and is a good introduction to some more complicated games that share similar Mechanics (Race for the Galaxy, Glory to Rome, Eminent Domain, etc..)

My birthday is coming up and Mom is getting me TTR Europe and Dominion. Thanks everyone!

Power grid is a great intermediary board game, decently strategic, doesn't take forever, and a fairly simple rule set.
