What do you think is the series' greatest moment? *Spoilers throughout* (self.asoiaf)
submitted 4 months ago by MiloMugginsI Do Not Sow
Personally, I had to put the book down and catch my breath following the battle between Oberyn Martell and Gregor Clegane. I can't wait to see what happens when Cersei's champion fights the Faith's.

"Is there gold in the village?" She shouted as she drove the blade up through his back. "Is there silver? Gems?" She stabbed twice more. "Is there food? Where is Lord Beric?" She was on top of him by then, still stabbing. "Where did he go? How many men were with him? How many knights? How many bowmen? How many, how many, how many, how many, how many, how many? ...is there gold in the village?"

[–]SillyBilly2The Bringer of Dragons 37 points38 points39 points 4 months ago
Arya Killing the Tickler, definitely fucking awesome
[–]precision_is_crucial 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
IIRC - Weasel and the Tickler meet for the last time.
[–]theymightbejenny 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
Arya killing the Tickler, one of Gregor's men who tortured the people of the riverlands for information, at the inn with the Hound. She retrieves Needle thereafter.
[–]Kittehhh 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
I actually got the chills when she re-took Needle. The fact that she never got it back was always in the back of my mind.
[–]Lannielief 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Agreed, an upvote for you. Even though there were many triumphant moments in the series, this one got a loud "FUCK YES!" from me :)
[–]MeadowlarkLevin 96 points97 points98 points 4 months ago
"The Wall will stop them," Jon heard himself say. He turned and said it again, louder. "The Wall will stop them. The Wall defends itself." Hollow words, but he needed to say them, almost as much as his brothers needed to hear them. "Mance wants to unman us with his numbers. Does he think we're stupid?" He was shouting now, his leg forgotten, and every man was listening. "The chariots, the horsemen, all those fools on foot . . . what are they going to do to us up here? Any of you ever see a mammoth climb a wall?" He laughed, and Pyp and Owen and half a dozen more laughed with him. "They're nothing, they're less use than our straw brothers here, they can't reach us, they can't hurt us, and they don't frighten us, do they?"
"NO!" Grenn shouted.
"They're down there and we're up here," Jon said, "and so long as we hold the gate they cannot pass. They cannot pass!" They were all shouting then, roaring his own words back at him, waving swords and longbows in the air as their cheeks flushed red. Jon saw Kegs standing there with a warhorn slung beneath his arm. "Brother," he told him, "sound for battle. "
[–]GreenSeerFor Stannis 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
First time I read it, when Stannis and his men appeared in the midst of battle, I was just like 'hold on did that really just happen?'. So awesome.

I agree this is the greatest and most awesome moment. IMO

"The North Remembers!"
When Doran Martell reveals his plans: ""Vengeance. Justice. Fire and blood.""
[–]McLargepants 53 points54 points55 points 4 months ago*
Everything of Davos in DwD is great, particularly The North Remembers scene, but even more when Davos is desperately trying to get help of Lord Manderly:
The enormity of the lie made Davos gasp. "Is it your claim that Robb Stark killed Wendel Manderly?" he asked the Frey. "And many more. Mine own son Tytos was amongst them, and my daughter's husband. When Stark changed into a wolf, his northmen did the same. The mark of the beast was on them all. Wargs birth other wargs with a bite, it is well-known. It was all my brothers and I could do to put them down before they slew us all." The man was smirking as he told the tale. Davos wanted to peel his lips off with a knife. "Ser, may I have your name?" "Ser Jared, of House Frey." "Jared of House Frey, I name you liar."

Now it's the second time I'm reading the books, and I can finally appreciate Davos. He is an amazing humble and honest man. Everything with him and Stannis is great.
[–]quivering_manfleshSteve 22 points23 points24 points 4 months ago
And of course there's the great moment with Manderly's granddaughter who doesn't take any of the Frey bullshit to heart.
[–]McLargepants 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Awesome chapter for sure.
[–]ReggieM83 6 points7 points8 points 4 months ago
"I'll meet him on the field of honor."
"What would a Frey know of honor?" Davos threw back.

When Jaime in a fevered haze tells Brienne the truth about killing Aerys and that he ended up saving the entirety of Kings Landing from being incinerated.
Let Robert be King of charred bones and cooked meat. Let him be King of Ash...
[–]jhudsui 34 points35 points36 points 4 months ago
When Jaime tells Brienne the reason he saved her life was because "I dreamed about you."
[–]MrFibbles 23 points24 points25 points 4 months ago
When jaime went back for her i was so fucking excited. I want them to bang so hard
[–]Lampmonster1 10 points11 points12 points 4 months ago
It's the moment when Jaime is finally saved imho. It's the moment when Jaime starts to do the right thing for the one reason that will keep him doing it. Because he wants to.
[–]Sweaty_Fumblings 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Just this minute read that bit.
Amazing.
[–]thisbusisemptySilent Sister 57 points58 points59 points 4 months ago
The entire red wedding, but the thing that made me freak out the most was the end of the chapter with the Hound and Arya, and Arya takes the axe blow to her head. I was convinced she was dead too and started freaking out.
Also, when you find out Drogon's eating people. The way that was presented made a chill run down my spine.
[–]imbeingkidnapped 11 points12 points13 points 4 months ago
I skipped ahead to make sure there was another Arya chapter. I couldn't handle it.
[–]thisbusisemptySilent Sister 8 points9 points10 points 4 months ago
Not gonna lie, I did too. I was freaking out.
[–]c3judgeStark of Winterfell 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
I did this for Bran and Rickon, as well as Arya
[–]DidntClickGuyHOT PIE! 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
This may not actually be true. It was just a claim made by a peasant, with only a set of bones for evidence.
[–]thersoivMormont's Raven 11 points12 points13 points 4 months ago
I think it's pretty well suggested by their reaction to the bones that it was a person.
[–]Matchlocke 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
Yes, but a set of human bones can be acquired in more than one way. The presence of a skeleton does not necessarily mean that Drogon was the one who killed the person.
[–]m2nello 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
Well whether or not Hazzea was killed by Drogon we know he has eaten at least one person.
[–]SuperCow1127 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
the end of the chapter with the Hound and Arya, and Arya takes the axe blow to her head.
It was worded so clearly deliberately vaguely that I was certain it was the side.
[–]ZeroOriginalContent 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
They should end an episode with this scene. Have it cut to black just as the hound is about to strike her with the axe so the audience isn't sure if shes dead or not either. Following the red wedding scene this would make for the most shocking episode of the series.
[–]MeadowlarkLevin 163 points164 points165 points 4 months ago

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points52 points 4 months ago
It's hard for me to pick the greatest moments but I'll pick some of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet.
Tyrion fucking shit up in the Blackwater
Syrio Forel fucking up armed and arnored knights with a practice sword
Victarion fucking up Ser Talbert Serry of Southshield
[–]QuickDickDeanBold 18 points19 points20 points 4 months ago
GRRM you son of a bitch. I can't believe he took Syrio away from us. "What do we say to the god of death? Not today..."

[–]thinker99Moon Boy 17 points18 points19 points 4 months ago
Great line from the show, but not in the book.
[–]DoctorQualifiedGreenseer 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
Just so.
[–]thersoivMormont's Raven 10 points11 points12 points 4 months ago
I'm not sold on the 1st swords death to be honest. He was a god of swordplay and Selmy felt that no one on the kingsguard at the time was really up to snuff aside from the kingslayer (not that he liked him).
[–]schneidroSome words are wind, some are treason. 8 points9 points10 points 4 months ago
But he goes one on one against Ser Meryn Trant, and we see Trant later in the series. He might be a great swordsman, but he didn't have a real sword nor the armor that Trant had.
[–]thersoivMormont's Raven 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
I'm not saying I'm sure he's alive/isn't alive, but I'm not sold that he's dead.
The obvious lack of finding out that he is dead is intentional. While I wouldn't doubt him dead, I believe there is more to the story than that.
[–]SuperCow1127 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
Hmm, why wasn't his head on display with Ned and Mordane?
[–]ClearandSweet 45 points46 points47 points 4 months ago
His eyes opened.
"You remember where the heart is?" he asked in a hoarse whisper. As still as stone she stood.
"I... I was only..."
"Don't lie," he growled. "I hate lies. I hate gutless frauds even worse. Go on. Do it."
When Arya did not move, he said "I killed your butcher's boy. I cut him near in half. And laughed about it after." He made a queer sound and it took her a moment to realize he was sobbing.
"And the little bird, your pretty sister. I stood there in my white cloak and let them beat her. I took the bloody song. She never gave it. I meant to take her too. I should have. I should have plucked her bloody and ripped her heart out before leaving her for that dwarf."
A spasm of pain twisted his face. "Do you mean to make me beg, bitch? Do it. The gift of mercy. Avenge your little Micheal."
"Micha." Arya stepped away from him. "You don't deserve the gift of mercy."
The Hound watched her saddle Craven through eyes white with fever. Not once did he attempt to rise and stop her, but once she mounted, he said, "A real wolf would finish a wounded animal."
Maybe a real wolf will find you, Arya thought. Maybe they'll smell you when the sun goes down. Then he would learn what wolves did to dogs.
"You shouldn't have hit me with that axe," she said. "You should've saved my mother."
She turned her horse and rode away from him, and never looked back once.
[–]c3judgeStark of Winterfell 11 points12 points13 points 4 months ago
Such a powerful scene! I loved it, and really glad that Arya didn't just kill him, it was so bad ass.
[–]NotHosaniMubarak 6 points7 points8 points 4 months ago
Already referring to it as "the gift". Arya got a head start.

As a few people have mentioned, Cersei's imprisonment. But what REALLY did it for me was Jaime burning her letter. I was literally jumping with joy after I read that.
[–]azraphael 10 points11 points12 points 4 months ago
Jaime rocketed upward towards the top of my list of favorite characters when he did that.
[–]jc214x 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago

Jaime's final chapter in ASOS:
Jaime sat alone at the table while the shadows crept across the room. As dusk began to settle, he lit a candle and opened the White Book to his own page. Quill and ink he found in a drawer. Beneath the last line Ser Barristan had entered, he wrote in an awkward hand that might have done credit to a six-year-old being taught his first letters by a maester: Defeated in the Whispering Wood by the Young Wolf Robb Stark during the War of the Five Kings. Held captive at Riverrun and ransomed for a promise unfulfilled. Captured again by the Brave Companions, and maimed at the word of Vargo Hoat their captain, losing his sword hand to the blade of Zollo the Fat. Returned safely to King’s Landing by Brienne, the Maid of Tarth. When he was done, more than three-quarters of his page still remained to be filled between the gold lion on the crimson shield on top and the blank white shield at the bottom. Ser Gerold Hightower had begun his history, and Ser Barristan Selmy had continued it, but the rest Jaime Lannister would need to write for himself. He could write whatever he chose, henceforth. Whatever he chose...

I loved that entire chapter. His discussions with the other knights to the mentions of Dunk in the white book. All genius.
[–]can-I-do-it-later 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
“I learned from the White Bull and Barristan the Bold,” Jaime snapped. “I learned from Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, who could have slain all five of you with his left hand while he was taking with a piss with the right.''

The discussion on the difference between broken men and outlaws between the septon and Brienne. I thought that it was a subtle but powerful conversation.

[–]yaredwCthulhu Pirates 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Probably my favorite passage in the entire series. Absolutely heart-touching.
[–]discsidI am no one 20 points21 points22 points 4 months ago
Ser Barristan heard a door open, somewhere to his left. He turned in time to see Khrazz emerge from behind a tapestry. He moved slowly, still groggy from sleep, but his weapon of choice was in his hand: a Dothraki arakh, long and curved. A slasher’s sword, made to deliver deep, slicing cuts from horseback. A murderous blade against half-naked foes, in the pit or on the battlefield. But here at close quarters, the arakh’s length would tell against it, and Barristan Selmy was clad in plate and mail.
“I am here for Hizdahr,” the knight said. “Throw down your steel and stand aside, and no harm need come to you.”
Khrazz laughed. “Old man. I will eat your heart.” The two men were of a height, but Khrazz was two stone heavier and forty years younger, with pale skin, dead eyes, and a crest of bristly red-black hair that ran from his brow to the base of his neck.
“Then come,” said Barristan the Bold. Khrazz came.
I loved virtually every scene mentioned here, but this passage was magnificent.
[–]ArthurBenevicciThe Golden Quill 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
I came here to post this. ADWD makes you root for Barristan so much, and I always had the impression that Barristan would end up fighting one of the pit fighters. However, GRRM is a heartless man.. I wasn't sure how it would end. I loved it.
[–]SillyBilly2The Bringer of Dragons 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago

Dany using her newly purchased Unsullied to retake her dragon.

Yes! It was great because its exactly what I wanted her to do. And then she did it...
Its nice when that happens with her, because she does so many other asinine things...
[–]ZedseayouAngry Angry Deer 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
I was actually expecting and hoping she wouldn't do it (for once I saw something coming :D)
I guess I just don't like the way she stooped to double-crossing rather than cunning or foresight.
[–]WillowTheFireArcher 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
''You are in difficulty,'' she observed. ''He will not come,'' Kraznys said. ''There is a reason. A dragon is no slave.'' And Dany swept the lash down as hard as she could acrossthe slaver's face.
So good. I loved this moment.

Lysa and the Moon door!
Joffrey's Wedding
[–]CatBrains 34 points35 points36 points 4 months ago
That moment with Lysa was so fantastic. That scene was one that was hard earned by both GRRM and the reader. The only reason we can read it with such palpable tension is that he has already established his "no one is safe" attitude. And clearly Lysa is batshit insane. It also allows LF to be a savior in a very odd sense and from a dangerous situation he set up himself, but it was still just a great moment when I realized we didn't have to deal with that treacherous crazy bitch anymore.
[–]Dovienya 44 points45 points46 points 4 months ago
I don't know about anyone else, but I was absolutely shocked to discover that she and Littlefinger were behind Jon Arryn's death.
[–]Hello-GingeKissed by Fire 22 points23 points24 points 4 months ago
Yes! I had gotten so used to assuming it was Cersi that I had almost forgotten about it.
[–]OryBallengerThe North Remembers 11 points12 points13 points 4 months ago
That was what really cinched that scene for me. First the shock of Jon Arryn, then the door, then blaming it on the bard...I just sat there, mouth gaping after all that.
[–]robototo 6 points7 points8 points 4 months ago
Yes, I instantly hated Littlefinger after that - the true extent of his scheming is revealed and everything bad that has happened to Sansas family can be traced back to him.
[–]c3judgeStark of Winterfell 14 points15 points16 points 4 months ago
It was a whole rollercoaster. The entire time I believed Sansa was done for, then to have Littlefinger walk in and save Sansa and reveal all. It was so enlightening and crazy
[–]w455up 9 points10 points11 points 4 months ago
It was an info-dump that revealed quite a few mysteries of the series and also made complete sense storywise

Joffrey's death was too easy. That little shit deserved something far more gruesome.
[–]imbeingkidnapped 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
It was worse for Cersei than it was for him. I kinda wish he'd been killed with more poetic justice, but GRRM don't play that. Eh well. We always have Ramsay's death to look forward to, right? I hope?
[–]Dodobirdlord 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
He's going to have his head hacked off from behind in the middle of a battle, and we are all going to feel let down.
[–]AlexisDeTocquevilleLord Admiral 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
I've always said it would be better for him to just catch a cold and die, just to further GRRM's tendency of breaking against fantasy tropes.
[–]c3judgeStark of Winterfell 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
It was still satisfying, reading him suffer, clawing at his throat.
I ran around telling everyone "The little shit is dead!" If they knew the series or not.
[–]timewarp 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
Yeah, but it was too quick. He deserved more than two minutes of suffering.

[–]kami71 17 points18 points19 points 4 months ago
For me it has to be when Davos came before the Manderly court. At this point I was very invested in the Starks. Holding on as a house on a thin strand of hair, I felt as everybody is against them. That everyone had abandoned them. Thats the atmoshpere that was in Westeros at that time too as I understood, and as I recall.
But then the girl started to speak. About how much they are in debt to the Starks, how they helped them and so on... That entire amazing and beautiful god damn speech.. And I went "Fuck Yeah!". And I shed a little tear of joy. Someone remembers!!! One of the greatest moments I've ever read in a book.
But then it became even more great when Manderly talked to Davos in private!!! But that's another story point.. And there are many more great moments. But the one above is the one I want every reader to experience.

The Red Wedding.
Oberyn and Gregor Clegane duel.
From the Tower of the Hand website recap, A Storm of Swords, Daenerys IV: "On the third day, the gates open and freed slaves begin pouring out. She has Missandei tell them to whom they owe their freedom as they walk by, and they begin to shout "mother" in many different languages. Soon she is being swarmed by freed slaves. She spurs Silver forward and rides among them as they touch her and call out to her."
From A Clash of Kings, Sansa VII: "Suddenly, a figure comes out of the shadows and grabs her; it is Sandor. He is more drunk than ever. He tells Sansa that he is leaving the city, but first he wants the song he was promised. He tells Sansa he could keep her safe so that no one would hurt her anymore. She refuses to look at his face, and he pulls a knife and tells her to sing or die. The only song she can think of is a hymn to the Mother, which she sings. Sandor begins to weep, rips off his white cloak, and leaves."
Bran discovering his abilities in ADWD, flying through past events.
The third horn, Others in ASOS.

You've nailed it on the head right here. All of these are amazing moments.

[–]OryBallengerThe North Remembers 13 points14 points15 points 4 months ago
I can't believe no one's said it yet: Dany taming Drogon in the fighting pits. The Valyrians needed powerful magic to tame dragons, and Dany did it with a whip and her maniacal laughter.
Close second: Genna Lannister talking with Jaime. "...but Tyrion is Tywin's son, not you. I said so once to your father's face, and he would not speak to me for half a year." Truer words have yet to be said in this series.

Jon - Janos Slynt.
Horn blows - Three times.
Red wedding could have been epic for me but some dumbass over at /r/got spoiled it for me :( .
Even then I didn't know the details, so out of curiosity I googled it to take a peek. And it was right there in the brief description of first search result. I facepalmed so hard, I nearly broke my nose.
[–]imbeingkidnapped 32 points33 points34 points 4 months ago
I was skimming through A Game of Thrones the other day, and in one of Sansa's chapters after Ned is killed she reflects on Janos Slynt holding her father down, and says something along the lines of hoping that "one day, a hero would come along and take off his head." I had one of those heart-welling moments. Her big brother did just that. Aww.
[–]classic101 8 points9 points10 points 4 months ago
Wow I didn't remember that part. That takes this already awesome moment and makes it more awesome and heartwarming.
[–]smuggy 9 points10 points11 points 4 months ago
Especially since Sansa only thought of Jon as her bastard half-brother.
[–]eidetic 16 points17 points18 points 4 months ago
Man, I almost got goosebumps during that scene with Jon and Janos Slynt.
It almost seemed as if that was the moment Jon really started to come into his own. You can also obviously say that he came into his own during the battle against the wildings, but I think when he ordered the execution of Slynt, he showed his true worth. He no doubt got some little measure of satisfaction out of it, but I don't think he necessarily let his emotions dictate his actions. And of course, the whole "he who passes judgement, should swing the sword", showed he really was his father's son (or maybe his foster father's son?!). I think it also showed the Watch that he was not to be taken so lightly, but unfortunately that might have lead to the events in Jon's last chapter of ADwD (since the watch might have grown fearful of openly defying Jon, and questioning his actions, they might have decided the only way was to attack/kill him)

Despite my best efforts to avoid spoilers, I found out about Catelyn and Brienne from an r/got post. From then on I unsubscribed from both until I finished all the books.
[–]eidetic 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
I recently finished the series. Before I had, I would occasionally peep my head in here and r/GoT, but I'd only look at topics I felt were pretty safe, and even then I usually tried to resist the temptation out of fears of spoilers.
I must say though, that when I did finish the series, coming here was like being a kid in a candy store. There was just so much that I learned from here that I either overlooked myself when reading, or just plain forgot.

A lot of mine was posted already but I'll add another one
The captain was turning away when she said, "What ship is this, my lord?" He paused long enough to give her a weary smile. "This is the galleas Titan's Daughter, of the Free City of Braavos." "Wait," Arya said suddenly. "I have something else." She had stuffed it down inside her smallclothes to keep it safe, so she had to dig deep to find it, while the oarsmen laughed and the captain lingered with obvious impatience. "One more silver will make no difference, child." he finally said. "It's not silver." Her fingers closed on it. "It's iron. Here." She pressed it into his hand, the small black iron coin that Jaqen H'ghar had given her, so worn the man whose head it bore had no features. It's probably worth less, but... The captain turned it over and blinked at it, then looked at her again. "This... how...?" Jaqen said to say the words too. Arya crossed her arms against her chest. "Valar morghulis," she said, as loud as if she'd known what it meant. "Valar dohaeris," he replied, touching his brow with two fingers. "Of course you shall have a cabin."

admittedly not as fist-pumping inducing moment as king in the north, wall defense, dracarys! dracarys!, etc nor as shocking as the various deaths, but very very satisfying

Littlefinger let Lysa sob against his chest for a moment, then put his hands on her arms and kissed her lightly. “My sweet silly jealous wife,” he said, chuckling. “I’ve only loved one woman, I promise you.” Lysa Arryn smiled tremulously. “Only one? Oh, Petyr, do you swear it? Only one?” “Only Cat.” He gave her a short, sharp shove.

[–]Dovienya 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
For me, that point didn't come until I read about Theon's torture and what had become of him. It was just so chilling to get that first Reek POV. Frankly, all of Theon's POVs in DWD were stomach churning.
[–]timeistickingaway 20 points21 points22 points 4 months ago
Danny conquering Astapor, not even a contest in my eyes. It sums up everything I like about her; her motherly instincts towards her people (not willing to give up her dragon), her hatred of slavery after what she endured from Viserys (freeing the city), her intelligence (tricking the slaver) and her badassery (self explanatory).
It also shows her naivety and that she's still a child, she frees the city and expects it to stay free. Danny thinks that because she became free and that she was a better/stronger person because of the ordeal, the slaves would react the same way.
[–]Adrexani 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago

The end of aFfC, where Doran Martell is revealed to be a patient schemer instead of a lazy fool (... not that aDwD undoes this or anything): "Vengeance. Justice. Fire and Blood."
My favorite piece of prose in the series is the last line of aCoK's prologue, after Maester Cressen fails to assassinate Melisandre: ".... the candlelight still gleaming in her red red eyes."
Something about those two comma-free "red"s gets me every time.

Nobody ever mentions this one, but it's my favorite Tyrion tidbit.
From Jaime ASOS:
When she reminisced to Jaime about his father Tywin and felt less protected with him gone, Jaime tried to reassure her that Tywin had left a son, her aunt replied she knew that and that was what scared her the most. When Jaime asked why her reply was... ..."Jaime, sweetling, I have known you since you were a babe at Joanna's breast. You smile like Gerion and fight like Tyg and there's some of Kevan in you, else you would not wear that cloak...but Tyrion is Tywin's son, not you. I said so once to your father's face, and he would not speak to me for half a year."

[–]hoagie888A Ghost in Winterfell 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
“They say I’m half a man,” he said. “What does that make the lot of you?”
That shamed them well enough. A knight mounted, helmetless, and rode to join the others. A pair of sellswords followed. Then more. The King’s Gate shuddered again. In a few moments the size of Tyrion’s command had doubled. He had them trapped. If I fight, they must do the same, or they are less than dwarfs.
“You won’t hear me shout out Joffrey’s name,” he told them. “You won’t hear me yell for Casterly Rock either. This is your city Stannis means to sack, and that’s your gate he’s bringing down. So come with me and kill the son of a bitch!” Tyrion unsheathed his axe, wheeled the stallion around, and trotted toward the sally port. He thought they were following, but never dared to look.
[–]DidntClickGuyHOT PIE! 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
Tyrion was dimly aware of a maester asking if he was injured. He pushed his way across the yard to where his nephew stood, his dung-encrusted crown askew. "Traitors," Joffrey was babbling excitedly, "I'll have all their heads, I'll-" The dwarf slapped his flushed face so hard the crown flew from Joffrey's head. Then he shoved him with both hands and knocked him sprawling. "You blind bloody fool." "They were traitors," Joffrey squealed from the ground. "They called me names and attacked me!" "You set your dog on them! What did you imagine they would do, bend the knee meekly while the Hound lopped off some limbs? You spoiled witless little boy, you've killed Clegane and gods know how many more, and yet you come through unscratched. Damn you!" And he kicked him. It felt so good he might have done more, but Ser Mandon Moore pulled him off as Joffrey howled, and then Bronn was there to take him in hand.

These are just my personal favorites, which mainly made me go "OH SHIT NO THEY DIDN'T!": Jaime in the bear pit. Sansa building a snow replica of Winterfell in the Vale (SO touching and well done). Dany sending her dragons and Unsullied on the slavers in Astapor. Tyrion's meltdown following Jaime's confession about Tysha. Lady Stoneheart's first appearance. Jaime tossing Cersei's letter in the fire (can you tell I freaking love Jaime Lannister?). Barristan opening a can of whoopass on Krazz.
[–]groverXIII 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
Ned's execution and the Red Wedding are the two that jump out at me. I also loved Tyrion killing Tywin. And Arya receiving the ugly girl's face was a moment that I reread several times because it kinda blew my mind.

Most of the ones I think are the greatest have already been mentioned (ASOS epilogue, "The north remembers" etc) but one that always got me was Davos' first chapter from ASOS when one of Salladhor Saans ships show up.
"Stannis" He shouted back at the Lyseni, "gods be good I serve King Stannis"."Aye" said the man in the boat "and so do we."
Also Sansa chapter where she's explaining her treatment from Joffrey to the Queen of Thorns.

Jon Getting Stabbed I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!!!!!!!
[–]delta4cainI hope Arya kills Dany 8 points9 points10 points 4 months ago
I saw that coming from miles away. Not in the exact fashion, but Jon's actions throughout the novel seemed very similar to that of Cersei in AFfC to me. She made blunder after blunders and got screwed big time.
Though everything Jon did like letting Mance and Val go, letting wildlings in, deciding to go to Winterfell and sending ships to rescue men, can be justified one way or another, it seemed like everything would pile up in the end and blow back in his face at some point.
[–]McLargepants 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
Jon did the only thing he could do, they would die otherwise. Now, with Jon dead, the night watch is going to be obliterated. I think in this instance the assassin's are reflective of Cersei.
Oh, so you think he's dead then?
I'm pretty sure he's dead yes, but I don't think he'll stay dead. And by dead, I'm quite sure he's going to be in Ghost for awhile, "a man then a wolf, then a man again". Regardless, the second after he was assassinated hell must have (will?) break loose on the wall. He just riled up all the wildlings to rescue Mance! They are going to slaughter the NW.

Not reading anything because I have put DWD on hold about halfway through for the sake of school/friends/etc. but wanted to say my pick for greatest moment is Stannis coming to save the wall. I did a lame "whoop whoop" whilst reading.
[–]frostflowers 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
"We never found the Horn of Winter to bring this cold thing down" - Ygritte, on the apparent failure of Mance's quest for Joramun's horn.
At least I remember her saying that - I could be misquoting. But that bit, where the desperation of the wildings becomes clear, and then the subsequent defence of the wall by Jon and the Watch and the people of Mole's Town... Yeah. One of my favourite sequences in the books.
There's something about the Wall and the Others and the wildings that really gets to me. I'm not sure I like how they handled the situation in ADWD, but I'm eager to see where we go from there.
[–]lostonrails 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Dany's vision: "He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire." Every time I read ACoK, I stare at that line. It's what the series is about, after all, and I feel like it has so many answers hidden behind it.

Aemon's lineage. Damn, that gave me the chills so bad. Very powerfully done on the show as well.
[–]lady_stone 5 points6 points7 points 4 months ago
You know, it's somewhat underrated, but I really loved Theon's taking of Winterfell as well. Hated the action itself, but thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling of it. His final chapter in ACOK was really gripping for me as he tries to desperately to hold it all together as everything falls apart, and there are a lot of really interesting moments that stick out from it - his botched execution of the kennelmaster to cover up how he killed the Ironborn that knew he didn't really kill Bran and Rickon, his nightmare about the feast to welcome King Robert to Winterfell (where it suddenly turns into a feast of the dead and dying), that moment of false hope where he thinks he might take the black and really enjoy it before everything turns to hell. Definitely one of the great moments in the series, to watch his great triumph turn to one of his biggest mistakes so quickly. And that's not even mentioning his comeback in ADWD.
[–]CopRock 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
I completely agree. Specifically, I love seeing it from his perspective- his take on why he thought he'd be a hero, his petulant fury at the Winterfell inhabitants, his refusal to take responsibility for his actions. It was a fascinating look at how someone justifies actions that I can only see as evil.

[–]i_like_jamA Bear 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
The Red Wedding, easily. It's the one moment in the books that hit almost every single reader like a brick wall. It has the biggest impact of any event in the books, and I think GRRM wrote the first 3 books entirely with the Red Wedding in mind and making it a powerful moment. That's why I think it's 'series' greatest moment'.
[–]Odog 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
There is a scene in the second book when Tyrion needs to go talk to Joffrey for some reason, and Joff is in the courtyard, practicing how to use his new crossbow. On kittens. So Tyrion is picking his way across the square, stepping over dead and dying kittens with crossbow bolts through them.
For some reason this is my favorite scene in the series, so sadistic, darkly funny and fucked up.

The confrontation between Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark in King's Landing as a result of Catelyn's capture of Tyrion. I had more or less considered GoT an average fantasy novel at that point, but as soon as I read this chapter, I realized shit was going DOWN. This event hooked me on the entire series.
