Can meteor impacts crack tectonic plates? (self.askscience)
submitted 3 months ago by man-vs-spider
Inspired by this post, I was wondering whether meteor impacts have enough energy to crack/shatter/break tectonic plates. As a follow-up question, how large would it have to be compared to the meteor associated with the extinction of the dinosaurs?

The meteor that hit the Yukatan Peninsula went all the way to the mantle, bringing up pieced of peridotite up in the rebound. It shattered it massively. It all depends on the size of the meteor.

It is possible that a object in space can crush the complete earth if it is big enough, so I think that is possible for a meteor to crack a tectonic plate. About what I am not sure is if the meteor gets big enough to actually do so, it would rather melt the whole surface of the earth.
