Could you maybe be dehydrated? Maybe that's contributing to the cramps.

Aging can cause alcohol to have different effects on your body, too. In my case, within the last year, I got the super fun side effect of waking up at 3 a.m. if I've drank anything alcoholic the night before. Anything at all - type and quantity do not matter. Two days ago, I drank 4 oz. of beer that was leftover from cooking, and I was wide awake from 3:00-4:00. Awesome, huh?

This happens to me as well, except I throw up hangover style and then can go back to sleep, even if I only tke a sip of someone else's beer to try it.

I think, in actuality, that it's related to dehydration.

I do spend most of my time in a perpetual state of dehydration. I just don't like drinking water. Whenever I go out with my husband he gets like 4 glasses of water and I only drink like 1/2 of mine.

Yes. I don't like water either. I either drink herbal teas or water with orange, lemon, lime, cucumber, raspberry, strawberry, apple, mint, etc

Did you start taking any new prescriptions or OTC medications? Could be an interaction maybe?

For a while I thought I had picked up an allergy to wheat beers. If you're drinking wheat beer, try something else, maybe a Miller Lite or a Coors Light (shitty, but really light). I wouldn't recommend Bud Lite though.

This happened to me as well - one day (after being a champion college-level binge drinker) a heavy wheat just put me out for weeks and I couldn't stomach beer for a few months after that. I am drinking beer again, but not like I used to.

I hear ya. I'm starting to have the same issue with ANY beer. I'm thinking it's due to me getting older. I used to be able to drink with the best of them...now, well now a couple of Millter Lites has me pretty good for the night...and sometimes the next day.

That's interesting. I've been kind of wondering if I'm developing some kind of allergy. I don't have these problems with food that I've noticed. Then again I've never been much of a bread or pasta person.

Yeah, I used to have problems like that after drinking beer. The next morning I'd have diarrhea, feel exhausted all day, have a sore throat and a headache even if I didn't drink very much. It was odd because I'd never had a hangover before in my life but I assumed it was just that, a hangover.

It turns out that I'm allergic to wheat. I'd never been a big bread or pasta eater either so I didn't figure it out until after the allergy got worse and I started having anaphylactic reactions.

If there is any chance you might have a wheat sensitivity you need to find out for sure before it develops into a full blown allergy.

I personally think I'm allergic to alcohol. I have almost the same symptoms as you. Half a bottle of beer the other night made me wake up at 7 the next morning feeling like death warmed over.

It's easy for me to cut alcohol out of my life altogether, but I suppose that choice isn't for everyone.

Could always switch to different and more interesting psychoactives.

I'm getting to that point. I've been drinking as part of social interaction for so long it's just a habit, but I don't want to feel like this anymore.

I sometimes get ill like this if I have alcohol if I don't make sure I've had a LOT of water within a few hours before drinking. I only really have a cider, beer, or one mixed drink and I still gotta make sure I'm well hydrated.

Yes! I've always been this way so I just smoke a lot of pot.

Yes, this happened to me after drinking for a few years. I think its because alcohol is a household poison and it eats your GI tract.

Before the last year, did you at any point have to take a great deal of antibiotics? In many cases, situational digestive problems can be caused by a change in the intestinal flora.

[–]lil_britches[S] 1 point2 points ago

Nope. I'm not currently taking any rx medications regularly either.

In that case, the most likely cause is a deficiency in ALDH, the enzyme that breaks down alcohol. High or low levels of ALDH can be a sign of liver problems, so this is something you might want to check out if you can afford to.

Yep. I can't drink at all anymore. I'm done at 1 beer, 2 if I push it. Instantly sick at even the smell of red wines or liquor. I studied alcohol/ethanol a LOT in the last 6 months and on top of not being able to drink it, am terrified to watch other people "get smashed." Just give it up, IMO. It's awful for you.

It took me a while to figure out (when I was much younger) that if I first had a few drinks and then smoked pot, I usually ended-up feeling nauseated, and often threw-up. Smoking and drinking together, equally, didn't seem to produce that effect.

That's probably not your situation, but I thought I'd mention it...just in case.

Isn't there a saying that goes something like "beer before grass, you're on your ass; grass before beer, you're in the clear?"

I've never heard that one. It's good. And definitely what I've experienced.

I used to drink like a fish. Now even two glasses of win have me puking all night. I don't know what happened, but it's quite sad and inconvenient.

I never drank like a fish - I can count on one hand the number of times that I drank to excess. Recently the vomiting such as you describe has hit me too. I don't know why.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

It happens as you age. The beer shits. I hit 28 or so when I started to get them regularly after drinking.

There's a spectrum of alcohol that does it to me. Actually red wine is the worst, then beer. Clearer alcohols like vodka, etc. don't have an effect.

It could be that you hurt your liver, it would be wise to see a doctor sooner than later.

Yup, sudden onset loss of alcohol stamina in a regular/heavy drinker should always send up warning flags. Obviously plenty of other explanations, but a simple liver function blood test can prevent you ending up with major liver problems (or at least doing so and being blissfully ignorant about it). Happens in about a fifth the time in women too, so I'd definitely check for a fatty liver - and start using silymarin to protect it.

Sounds like your body is telling you not to drink. You should probably listen.

I think I'm in the same situation. Three of the last four times I have drank (varied amounts and types of liquor), I have thrown up or had diarrhea the next day. I'm starting to wonder what's going on.

I've heard of having reverse tolerance to alcohol, but usually that happens with alcoholics, like they can drink a ton usually, but all of a sudden, they get very ill from alcohol. I haven't heard about this happening with non-alcoholic people and it sounds like the OP is not an alcoholic.

This happened to me after I started drinking heavily in college. I stopped drinking completely for about two years, and didn't drink beer at all for about 6 years. Gradually I started drinking again, first only wine and hard spirits and later started bringing beer back in. I still don't know what happened, but for me it was only temporary.
