My take on it would be "community of communities". I'm sure there is sexier way to phrase it, but that is how I feel about it. We also use "community platform" sometimes, especially in media with platform being key to differentiate that we do not have editorial control. Sometimes we discuss it as an "attention aggregator", as opposed to a "link aggregator" when it started. To be honest I don't know if there is really a perfect descriptor out there, and even if there was it may not always be accurate as reddit continues to evolve.

Reddit really is unusual in that way. Not unique, as IRC and other mediums do what reddit does - provide the basic engine, and allow users to alter and expand from there, with both 'localization' of interests and clustering of related communities.

It's something I like about reddit immensely. One single site often feels like hundreds and thousands, and yet still one, and whatever my mood, I can find something to suit it or to change it.

This has already happened to a degree on /r/starcraft. It doesn't look like Reddit and standard Reddiquette conventions are not often followed.

Additionally, it seems that most r/starcraft readers don't spend much time on the rest of Reddit, coming from other sites for Starcraft.

I have seenva few subreddits which have such a drastic layout change that you can barely tell they are part of Reddit.

One community that I've watched really develop is r/trees. While it may not be the quintessential example of what you are looking for, the mods of that Reddit - and the members as well - have really turned it into a community based subreddit. It has links to so many resources as well as several video and text chatrooms where people can connect and discuss something that brings them all together.

I've seen r/books and r/writing grow as well and believe they could eventually end up that way.
