According to the admins, reddit is primarily a community creation tool, no different than Usenet, IRC, or common imageboard software like Kusaba. Before this was declared I doubt anyone thought of reddit like that. Rather, most users thought reddit was the community, a cohesive group with generally similar interests and beliefs unified and exemplified by the front page. However, this is not so, at least if we're to listen to that seminal blog post "How reddit works" which put forth the aforementioned idea of reddit as a community building engine.
This got me thinking, what might it look like if we were to take that idea to its logical extreme? Could one create a subreddit so separate from reddit that it ceases to be a part of the site completely, except for sharing a common URL? Or do all communities share a fundamental "reddit-ness" that can not be escaped no matter how different the userbase, mod leadership, CSS layout, etc. is from reddit?
