I agree, I would be more interested in hearing people actually playing their guitars than seeing a pic. Unless their guitar has some unique feature or characteristic. It is fair to point out that there is already a subreddit for that anyway. /r/guitarporn

[–]absolutkiss -3 points-2 points ago

Really? You're really gonna sit here and click on every video/soundcloud link to see every person play? I find that hard to believe.

FWIW, I saw your last few videos and I look forward to seeing more.

The problem with performance videos is that everyone has slightly different taste in music. Guitar encompasses everything from classical to metal, with fans of every genre in between subscribed here. A photo of a vintage strat appeals to a broader audience than a video of someone playing a Megadeth solo. Doesn't mean it's not worthwhile but is harder to build an audience with a limited number of subscribers.

[–]bronyraurLes Paul/Taylor 1 point2 points ago

I appreciate that. And you are totally correct, I tend to forget how popular metal is. I fall victim to the line of thinking that "every guitar player has similar taste in music" which is crazy to think, but it's the truth.

I don't know the first thing about metal, but if I posted a pic of my amp, it's something that would get upvoted by anyone regardless of style. I completely I completely understand that gear transcends musical genre and I kinda feel stupid for bitching about it really. I think the best course of action would just to encourage more guitar-playing content. I love hearing different styles as played by members of this community, oftentimes it's what inspired me to try something new.

[–]rthrtylr -3 points-2 points ago

Guitar encompasses everything from classical to metal

With as much Blues as you can stomach in between.

[–]scuzzphut 29 points30 points ago

I sort of agree. New gear posts are ok - much better when the OP tells us why, how much, what it sounds like , caveats etc.

Posting a picture of a plain, made in Mexico Strat and saying "what do you guys think?" , on the other hand, is pointless. We think it's a blue strat.

Brandon - thanks for the heads up on /r/guitarlessons !

[–]VUX 4 points5 points ago

good, yes. We oughta downvote every post like you describe. People would get the point then. If these posts get upvotes, then there's a reward mechanism for posting smartphone photos of mundane gear.

[–]scuzzphut 1 point2 points ago

Maybe the solution is......

/r/smartphonephotosofmundanegear

[–]Wilderbeest 6 points7 points ago

I can see where you're coming from. But I do like looking at guitars and seeing other peoples collections. Plus then I get the chance to ask them questions about their gear. Also quality posts do find their way here. Did you see that video of Jeff Beck showing off his favorite guitars? It was great. But I think you just need to lead by example and post things you think are worthwhile, and others will follow suit.

PS. I'm also guilty of posting a family photo of my ukes and guitars.

[–]MoonRabbit 9 points10 points ago*

I don't mind the NGD posts so much but I do have a couple of problems with this subreddit.

• People who do post something different (inventions, avant garde music, technical posts) often get voted down.

• There are a of people who come here for advice. I try to answer quite a lot of them. I am a guitar teacher by trade, a studied musician, a studied audio tech and an amateur luthier. I often spend 10-20 mins of my time to try and help someone out with music theory, guitar setup, chord changes and the like only to be rewarded with some down votes. I get paid for advice when I'm offline, here I do it as a favour to help people out.

TL;DR If you want good content, you've got to stop discouraging it.

[–]scaryghosts 29 points30 points ago

I always liked this place myself. For some reason I always click on the photos and enjoy seeing them.

[–]absolutkiss 20 points21 points ago

No, you're a terrible person for disagreeing and possibly a monster for enjoying photos of guitars.

[–]bluetoeTaylor 710ce/ Gibson j50 8 points9 points ago

i click them too, knowing full well it's probably gonna be another ibanez or squier or epiphone. it's kind of like playing scratch-off lottery tickets... occasionally, it's something worthwhile.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

I'm still fairly new to this subreddit and have yet to figure out what this acronym means.

[–]liquidcola 40 points41 points ago

It stands for "neva' get 'dis". People use it to warn others of horrible guitars.

[–]njantirice 7 points8 points ago

And now that's all I'll see, thank you.

[–]raintree420 0 points1 point ago

THAT'S why everybody posts pictures of their boring ass Strats and ugly yellow Telecasters!! I knew it!

new gear day

new guitar/gear day

[–]ITalkToTheWind 3 points4 points ago*

You can use Reddit Enhancement Suite to do this, which alleviates the problem a bit (except for when people aren't courteous enough to tag their posts). Obviously it doesn't increase the amount of quality posts, but you can also have subreddits nested together so that you can see more guitar related subreddits at the same time. For example, you could just double click the subreddit link at the type and type something like:

Guitar+Guitarlessons+Learnmusic+tabs+WeAreTheMusicMakers+musicimprov+musicians+bandmembers+MusicNotes

and you'll see all of those at once.

[–]geodebug 16 points17 points ago

This is a subreddit? I thought it was a Guitar Center catalog.

[–]simpsun728 4 points5 points ago

I just submitted a video to this subreddit. You're right, it needs more videos of us playing.

[–]defected 4 points5 points ago

Lol, I posted an old, short video of myself playing last night, and go zero comments/votes (be it down, or up).

[–]shadowmic7Schecter/Ovation/Fender[M] 4 points5 points ago

This community is exactly what the users make it.

The only posts we dont allow are spam & memes.

We're not always around to clear things out of the spam filter that shouldnt be there, but we do as much as we can.

If any of the readers have problems with the content in r/Guitar, then you are the only ones with the power to fix that. The mods will not sway content in one direction or another (save for the no memes rule, which isn't going anywhere).

[–]mightycow 118 points119 points ago

Post some videos of your own. Start a contest. Suggest songs to play.

At least gear pics are more interesting than complaint posts.

[–]Devoidarex 112 points113 points ago

I disagree. Gear pics are far less interesting than complaint posts. I could google image search guitars and have a million guitar pics to look at in a second.

In this subreddit, I'd much rather hear people's opinions on how to improve things than see yet another visual representation of something we all aspire to make aural use of.

It's like offering a picture of the piano that Beethoven use to play on rather than linking to yourself playing one of his sonatas. What's the point?

[–]Cheeto333 15 points16 points ago

I agree with Devoidarex. I feel like complaint posts are necessary (in moderation of course). They might lead to some friction, but can help the subreddit in the long run.

My favorite posts are those with opinions/demos.

[–]TenaciousBe 3 points4 points ago

I think the point is to say "here's what I have!" Someone else might recognize it and go "Hey, I have that same amp! What kind of settings do you use?" and a meaningful discussion can breed from there.

It's not all about people showing off, it's often people trying to make connections and breed discussion ABOUT what they have, how they play it, etc.

Though, sometimes people do just want to show off.

[–]imagineyouarebusyRickenbacker360/Martin/Gibson/Fender 0 points1 point ago

And some times, people just want some place to get their licks in.

I just posted this, and yes, I realize one hand went out of camera. You can have your money back, but not your time! Ha. I'm keeping your time.

[–]moofy[S] 30 points31 points ago

youre right. I shall

[–]Zalamander 10 points11 points ago*

The subreddit is what its members make it. If you don't like it, contribute and fix it rather than bitching about it.

[–]VUX 49 points50 points ago

that's actually kinda unrealistic. What, one guy posts videos of himself playing and that counteracts the flood of pictures of mexican strats and solid state marshall combos? moofy actually makes a good point.

[–]moofy[S] 15 points16 points ago

thank you. yes I will try do my part by posting interesting guitar videos/songs but this post was a plea for others to also help the quality of the subreddit.

[–]VUX 6 points7 points ago

right on. I started r/advancedguitar to get more playing and less gear, but it never really gained the traction I would have liked. Like it or not, we are stuck with r/guitar. Might as well try to make it better.

[–]absolutkiss -3 points-2 points ago

Try being a little more positive instead of posting something juvenile, like, "Why this sucks."

[–]HonestCorporation 4 points5 points ago

Sometimes bitching is a contribution.

[–]Devoidarex 9 points10 points ago

Offering your opinion is a contribution. The irony is that you spent time to come here and bitch about bitching.

[–]Aikidi 2 points3 points ago

I don't see how vocalizing negative sentiments that many people share isn't productive. It usually takes someone pointing out a problem before people fix try to fix it.

[–]honestbleeps 3 points4 points ago

The problem with Reddit is that people upvote stuff they like way more frequently than they downvote stuff they don't.

As a result, posts that require low effort to consume see high rates of upvotes, but not many downvotes from folks thinking "this isn't the kind of content I want to see"

In turn, people see karma being earned for picture posts more often and at higher levels so that's what they post (yes, reddit karma is meaningless but for whatever reason it absolutely functions as a motivator).

The real way to fix it is for people who want "real" content to start downvoting "garbage" content. Problem is, most just ignore it and move on, because that's easier.

[–]Oldspooneye 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. Reddit is what you make it. Upvote, downvote, post your own stuff. Bitching about it isn't going to change things.

[–]GeorgePukas -1 points0 points ago

Nope, this is the first thread I've clicked on in the subreddit in a while. The man is right.

[–]megablahblah 1 point2 points ago

It wasn't until recently that they allowed YouTube videos again. They were blocked for the longest time.

[–]J_LaP 17 points18 points ago

Well this is the first thing I have upvoted in this subreddit in a good long while.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Maybe you should bother more often. The most relevant and interesting posts stay at the bottom while pictures get upvoted.

[–]J_LaP 4 points5 points ago

Well being the person who regularly downvotes all the guitar pics posts that's not really my fault. Get on the posters and the mods, they should push the guitar pics to their own subreddit.

[–]pertoosis 14 points15 points ago

I like checking out people's new gear.

[–]3ra1n1ac 9 points10 points ago

A picture of a guitar, buy itself may be a tad boring. But for a lot of people finally acquiring a that guitar you've had on layaway or got as a gift is part of being a guitar player. I have played for 20 years and it's a rare occasion that I get a new one. And when I do you will see a post on here of me showing it off. Furthermore someone might have interesting opinions about your recent purchase that you did not think of when you picked it up, and that info can go a long way in your enjoyment. Suck it up, you don't have to like everything about a community of people on the Internet.

[–]bronyraurLes Paul/Taylor 7 points8 points ago*

I suppose, but getting caught up in what gear you use is kinda stupid. One of my favorite guitars to play recently is a shitty 80s Yamaha tuned to open D. If I posted a picture of that no one would give a shit. I posted a video of me playing it, and still no one gave a shit.

The few posts discussing theory, or what have you, get little attention, and honestly I think it's because maybe 20% of the 25k subscribers care about stuff like that.

What I'm getting at is that people that put too much focus on their gear are missing the point. And that kind of mentality seems to be not only reinforced, but celebrated in this sub.

Not unlike how other subs split up-- gaming & truegaming, etc. Once subs get more popular they get overrun with vapid picture posts and advice animals.

That said, this is my favorite subreddit, but the constant NGD posts are getting tiresome.

I apologize for any grammatical errors, types this on my phone.

[–]3ra1n1ac 0 points1 point ago

Also, it's r/guitar, meaning all things guitar. Songwriting and theory, as well as playing style, are not part of the general public and 20% would seem natural.

[–]infinite_chaos 0 points1 point ago

So 80% of people who are interested in guitar don't care about songwriting, music theory, or playing style?

[–]3ra1n1ac 0 points1 point ago

Would you say that 8 out of ten guitar players you meet will talk about music theory as opposed to what songs they know how to play? This is taking the hobby guitarist into consideration not the one that regularly gigs. I think 20% is a fair estimate it may not be accurate but if you had a party with ten guitar players all with varying degrees of skill. Less than half are going to be talking about advanced, while the rest are likely to talk about what they know how to play or what they are imitating. Most people spend a lot of time learning through imitation, they don't jump right into the advanced stuff.

[–]fprintf 0 points1 point ago

It is nice when people use NGD, because then I can filter them out in Alien Blue and RES. Problem mostly solved.

[–]3ra1n1ac 1 point2 points ago

No worries on grammar. Look this is a bit of a side rant, but, who cares what people think. It's the Internet. Someone is bound to be interested, it never ceases to amaze me the lengths that people go to do what is popular. If you put that picture on here, most may not care because it's not a les Paul or a strat but some tech geek might think the way you set it up is interesting. Just because there wrent millions of tech geeks drooling over your guitar...who cares.

Anyway, I like looking at people's gear because I like to get ideas about what I might do with my upcoming projects.

I like that there are subreddits because it's a place on the Internet where I can get a more refined group of interests, as opposed to say Facebook or YouTube. I don't really use those because that's a popularity contest and that shit sucked in high school and still does. Here at least I know everyone likes something similar to me. It's never perfect but it's close enough that I don't feel like someone is gonna start yelling ignorant racist and unrelated remarks to make their point. Anyway, I'm only ranting here because I don't get any joy from most community Internet conversations and knit picking one that is well above the average of what is out there is lame.

[–]bronyraurLes Paul/Taylor 0 points1 point ago

Tru dat.

Also, on a side note: of you're into the blues, I just watched this really cool documentary on YouTube called "black white and blues.". Very cool stuff in there.

[–]3ra1n1ac 0 points1 point ago

Ha, so I say YouTube sucks and you direct me to a YouTube link. Thanks though.

[–]bronyraurLes Paul/Taylor 0 points1 point ago

Haha to be fair you said you hate YouTube because of the popularity contest. This is just a cool movie.

[–]3ra1n1ac -2 points-1 points ago

I know, I was just pointing out the irony.

[–]oldtomfoolery 9 points10 points ago

Agree 110% NGDs are so fucking stupid. How about a review and sound clip of new guitars and amps. I really don't care if someone I didn't know got a guitar unless they are going to give me some insight on it.

[–]dyancat 4 points5 points ago

It is also kind of annoying when people post a LP, SG, Strat, Tele, etc... Everyone has one of those guitars and knows exactly what they look like etc. I like seeing interesting gear, hidden gems, etc.

[–]finest_bear -1 points0 points ago

I disagree, LPs alone vary wildly from one another, with a figured maple top no two are identical, some with a better flame than others, etc

[–]darkwarrior006Hughes&Kettner,ESP 2 points3 points ago

It kinda sucks too because i have submitted a couple of gear test that i did (its actually guitar playing) and it only got one upvote. It seems people only care about pics of gear now.

[–]MoonRabbit 1 point2 points ago

Yep. I think a lot of people do this once or twice and then don't bother anymore due to their posts being ignored or downvoted. To me that is the real problem.

[–]imagineyouarebusyRickenbacker360/Martin/Gibson/Fender 3 points4 points ago

Okay, I just made this today. Be gentle.

Scuttle Buttin style lick

[–]odinsbane 1 point2 points ago

This is cool, if I may make a suggestion. It would be good to hear it in a song/rhythmic arrangement. Maybe a bar or two. Also when you slow it down, it helps if it is actually played slower. Anyways cool riff, I gave it a shot, might give it a go tomorrow to.

[–]imagineyouarebusyRickenbacker360/Martin/Gibson/Fender 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the input.

I am trying to do it differently than everybody else on YouTube. Most videos have ten minutes of explanation for one minute of guitar lick.

I'm making it quick and easy to get to the lick, and solve the problem where everyone asks if you have the tab. I supply it without asking, for free.

I was hoping the half-speed option might be usable rather than playing it a second time. I know the sound is funky, but minimally, for a fast lick, it gives you a better idea what is being played. No?

[–]odinsbane 1 point2 points ago

I like how you did it, and I don't like the 10 minute intro's people do. Its as though they just like to hear themselves talk.

The half speed is good but it is still hard to catch the rhythm. The sound doesn't line up as well, plus it isn't quite the same as playing it. Maybe just a lead in to the lick would help.

| lick | 2,3,4 | lick | 2,3 4.

[–]imagineyouarebusyRickenbacker360/Martin/Gibson/Fender 1 point2 points ago

Thanks. Some videos I cut the lick out of a piece I was playing. But for those I played straight out, no question, I'll put a little more time on. I'll also try playing some of the next quick licks slower as well as at speed.

Something to think about. When you learn to play by ear, you are forced to figure out the rhythm by ear, and I think that helps you develop the ability to figure out licks more quickly. Obviously, with videos including tab, you aren't figuring anything out by ear, but some necessity to figure it out to a degree, could still be good.

What do you think?

[–]odinsbane 0 points1 point ago

That is something along the lines of what I am getting at. I can read the tab (which doesn't have the time on it) and guess at the rhythm, but it is really hard to find the rhythm from just a short lick. I sorta imagine scuttle buttin' and try to fill in the blanks. If there was a little more context, I think I could figure the rhythm out rather simply. Especially with the slowed down version.

Maybe even including a link to the piece being used in a song would help.

[–]imagineyouarebusyRickenbacker360/Martin/Gibson/Fender 1 point2 points ago

I'll have to figure out how to accomplish that without using the artist (YouTube can pull it) or making it too long.

Do you think it is necessary on the pieces that aren't as quick? Like this one, which has a bit more than just a lick? That is more the intro, rather than just a lick.

[–]odinsbane 1 point2 points ago

This one is a bit easier because there is some sections in it that are straight beats. For the other ones a count in would really help. Or put it together 2x's in time.

[–]imagineyouarebusyRickenbacker360/Martin/Gibson/Fender 1 point2 points ago

Appreciate the input. Thanks.

[–]hcregular 2 points3 points ago

I like seeing people's gear. G.A.S. is a real medical condition...

[–]RMULE 2 points3 points ago

I agree, it seems that people just want a guitar Tumblr more than anything unfortunately.

[–]viz39 1 point2 points ago

Honestly, I pretty much agree with what you are saying. However I think a big part of the reasons there aren't more videos or clips of people playing their gear is that people are hesitant to put themselves out there like that. While there's definitely a lot of circle jerkery all over reddit there are also a lot of people who get off on just being insulting jerks. So people may not be that confident enough in their playing skills to feel like they can post a clip of them playing their gear (even if it's just to show how it sounds and not as a testament to their skills as a player) without a small but vocal contingent of people telling them it sucks or what they did wrong.

Yeah, I definitely think part of being a musician or a player is being able to handle the criticism, but I think probably a fair chunk of people on here are just hobbyist bedroom players who enjoy the instrument and don't necessarily want to put themselves upon youtube for the reddit community to judge.

Just my take on it.

[–]BattleBeeear 4 points5 points ago

Here's a link of me playing! You can look at people's guitars while they play them. In my opinion guitars aren't meant to be ogled as functionless trophies, they should be played!

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guitar/comments/oqh52/not_enough_playing_heres_me_playing_the_fisherman/

[–]Honest_Benjamin 2 points3 points ago

I'm unhappy with most of the comments here. Maybe moofy is right, and it would be better for both the people who got the gear and the people who love gear if the people who got gear give some samples of what it sounds like.

[–]unlovely 0 points1 point ago

I figured this subreddit sucks because playing guitar is so much better than posting about it on the internet lol

[–]MongrelNymph 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. I kind of assume everyone here has a guitar of some kind. That's why they're on the guitar subreddit. I don't need to see its picture. I trust that you have one or you wouldn't be here.

[–]VelvetElvis 0 points1 point ago

Maybe not all of us have recording equipment and put enough pride into our playing to not share it in a crappy iphone video on youtube?

[–]absolutkiss 5 points6 points ago*

If you don't like it, submit content that you like or leave and create your own sub-reddit. Bitching doesn't solve anything.

Personally I love seeing photos of guitar and gear. I also love reading interesting posts. I'm not interested in seeing a million posts of everyone on here playing guitar, but wait, hold the presses-that's my opinion, and if this place turned into that, I'd just leave.

EDIT: I mean, really man, I just looked at your submission history and the last time you submitted anything to this sub-reddit was 8 months ago when you asked, "What is your favorite string to play?" ಠ_ಠ

[–]strongestgimp 2 points3 points ago

this subreddit is show and tell for guitar geeks

[–]mdeckert 5 points6 points ago

Materialism/consumerism circle jerk for people that don't have time to practice because they are too busy buying crap. Look at my pretty guitar . . oh shit is that a text message

[–]jevon -2 points-1 points ago

It's the same on /r/starcraft. Lots of posts of other people playing games... but very little on playing your own...

[–]themontereyjack 0 points1 point ago

Not really, as those posts are more about education than vanity. They're more to the tune of "hey check out this crazy micro / wonky build order / timing, that'd be awesome against x" rather than "hay guyz look I bought something lol."

[–]GeminiLife 4 points5 points ago

I hear ya man. I used to post songs on here pretty regularly, but when you only get like 4 views, and the guy with a picture of a guitar gets 200+ you start asking yourself "what's the point?"

I'd love to see a subreddit that actually listens to the music people post.

[–]THEoriginalBRIEN 0 points1 point ago

A-FUCKING-MEN.

[–]offworld92 0 points1 point ago

Cool story.

I like seeing and talking about gear. I don't care about someone playing the millionth cover of Hurt.

[–]kahaweCarvin/Diezel/ENGL 1 point2 points ago

These complaint posts keep popping up once in a while... and without any exception, the people complaining in the original post and in the complaining replies have hardly contributed anything of the sort of posts they want to see in /r/guitar.

So this is definitely an excellent starting point. Instead of complaining about /r/guitar, why not start contributing the posts you are missing?

[–]jim_swanky 1 point2 points ago

Pardon me but this is r/guitar and those people are showing guitars, it is relevant, whether or not you like it is not

[–]gtani 0 points1 point ago

I think other subreddits like /luthier and /guitarlessons are heavily moderated, tho "Where do you buy neck for Chapman stick" just got thru

anyway How about you click "Preferences" in upper right and under "Link Options"

don't show me sites with a score less than (blank for none)

(try, I dunno, "7")

unfortunately, this setting is for all subreddits, and I have to do this a lot, but haven't thought anything better

[–]fyoory 1 point2 points ago

there is always /r/guitarlessons ;D

[–]NoTimeForFools 0 points1 point ago

Videos are cool. I like seeing the gear and reading reviews.

[–]Popozuda72 1 point2 points ago

So be the change.

[–]realfinkploydTurner 1 point2 points ago

Then contribute the kind of stuff you want to it. There isn't a Guitar subreddit cabal responsible for determining what goes here, we do.

[–]HyceGibson/Blackheart 1 point2 points ago

I posted audio clips of me playing. They got one comment and a couple upvotes, but nothing else...

[–]milliondollarboy1 0 points1 point ago

Can we please please please bring back the reddit guitar jams please?

[–]MoonRabbit 0 points1 point ago

Okay, you start.

[–]Sr_Manos_Globos 0 points1 point ago

It's too bad it was soo much work for those involved in coordinating and editing those jams.

There was a lot of really sweet stuff happening there, and a lot of really great players in this /r/, but I personally would hate to have to organize and edit all that.. I think we're lucky those jams even happened in the first place, due to the extreme generosity of time and dedication Rellim and JamGrandMaster, et al provided to make it happen.

Who knows, maybe someone else will offer their services.

[–]shadowmic7Schecter/Ovation/Fender 1 point2 points ago

that amount of work is what drove Rellim out, and he was a damn good mod.

This kind of stuff is definitely not easy, but we're always open to volunteers.

[–]ravendta 0 points1 point ago

You don't want clips of me playing. My guitars look a lot better than they sound in my hands.

(Note: No, I have not posted pictures of my guitars thus contributing to the aforementioned overabundance of gear pics)

[–]Canadian_Infidel 0 points1 point ago

I've considered posting tabs that I've made.

[–]mmaluff 1 point2 points ago

I agree with you. The reason why this happens is probably because it takes less time to see an image and upvote it than it does to watch a whole song, decide whether you like it or not, and then upvote it.

[–]imagineyouarebusyRickenbacker360/Martin/Gibson/Fender 2 points3 points ago

How about a thirty-second lick?

You can hate it in a fraction of the time it took me to suck at it.

[–]Vietcong_Junglebunny 1 point2 points ago

Don't forget about old mate who brags about how much pussy his 'playing' gets at parties.

[–]MoonRabbit 2 points3 points ago

Yep, why do we never see women post here more than once? It's a pretty brutally sexist environment.

[–]valadil 0 points1 point ago

I find subreddits above 10k users get boring for this reason. This one is at 28k so I'm shocked I'm still reading it.

I was planning on suggesting setting up a separate sub for guitar pics, but it looks like /r/guitarporn is already out there. Maybe you should be pointing the [NGD] posts there?

Are there any other smaller subreddits that serve a similar purpose as this one that the OP should look into?

[–]SupermanKickedMyAss 1 point2 points ago

I'd rather see more guitar discussion here than guitar pictures to be honest. I would like to have discussion about different guitars, pick-ups, amps but I never actually see that. Sometimes I get some advice here but it's just filled with pictures.

[–]sinemetu1 0 points1 point ago

Completely agree with OP. I started coming here not too long ago because I wanted to find interesting ways to improve my playing. Now I rarely come here and when I do it's because I'm really bored and basically want to see if there is anything besides NGD posts.

Maybe if there was a separate NGD subreddit that would help.

[–]Sup_Guyz 0 points1 point ago

I dunno, everytime I ask a question here it gets answered fast. It's nice.

[–]sinndogg 0 points1 point ago

"post a cool chord progression" posts.

Too many basic major/minor progressions in those, I've found. Where the sus2 and diminished chords at?

[–]rootmonkey 1 point2 points ago

Honestly there are much better sites and forums for guitar related stuff out there. I don't think reddit can replace the entire web.. Most guitarists probably don't know about reddit and most redditors are not guitarists.

Basically move along and look else where for what you seek.

[–]shortbusoneohone 1 point2 points ago

I agree 100% brah! PREACH IT!

[–]monkpants 0 points1 point ago

Well I was going to contribute a first world problem that said "finger calluses finally get hard"

"now they interact with my laptop's touchpad and it won'/t recognize me"" But i couldnt figure out how to make memes so I said screw it.

[–]guitarnerd 1 point2 points ago

Man, /r/guitar has improved a lot after you post - thanks! :)

[–]moofy[S] 1 point2 points ago

haha your welcome, I also noticed a whole lot of awesome posts today :)

[–]AnarchistTrotskyist 0 points1 point ago

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guitarporn

This should be in the side panel.

[–]Thea70 0 points1 point ago

i completly agree with the OP. the average # of comments on each post is about 7 or 8. most not even.

this subreddit is dead until somebody posts their strat they got at woodstock from jimi himself, then suddenly then entire page is alive. you cant answer a simple question or give somebody your opinion but you can type " WOW" to something that youve probably already seen?

[–]bloodmoney 0 points1 point ago

Well I admit that I did post a pick of my new guitar recently but it never went up. But for fucksake, it was my first Les Paul.

[–]DStroya -2 points-1 points ago

try being a metal guy in this sub reddit. I fucking hate fenders.

[–]rthrtylr 3 points4 points ago

I feel your pain, and I play a Fender. Don't ever mention sw*p pck*ng.

[–]howisbabbyformedIbanez/Boogie 5 points6 points ago

Cliche blues licks or GTFO. Also, DAE like Clapton?

[–]rthrtylr 6 points7 points ago

[Instant assumption that preference for Metal implies Malmsteenism]

[–]howisbabbyformedIbanez/Boogie 6 points7 points ago

[Bitching about technical players lacking "soul"]

[–]rthrtylr 7 points8 points ago

Calls Metal stupid. Plays pentatonic exclusively.

[–]sinndogg 2 points3 points ago*

Rags on technical guitarists, can't play anything more complex than Nirvana.

Says he could, but he's a "soulful" and "emotional" player.

[–]rthrtylr 0 points1 point ago

Hey, Nirvana has emotional complexity, not like soulless wank Metal like Bon Jovi.

[–]sinndogg 0 points1 point ago

Not sure if worst or best joke ever...

[–]rthrtylr 0 points1 point ago

I'm manic/depressive, it could easily be both.

[–]sinndogg 0 points1 point ago

The string tension makes trying to play metal more difficult than it should be, I've found. Not to mention that you need to replace the pickups, or track down one of the Fenders with stock humbuckers, to stop the damn things from hissing all the time with distortion.

[–]SociableIntrovert -5 points-4 points ago

Pics of guitars/amps > whiny, bitching rant.

[–]xelested 3 points4 points ago

You can find 10 000 pictures of guitars/amps from Google in 3 seconds.

[–]Popozuda72 0 points1 point ago

yeah but those pics are rather anonymous. What the hell is so wrong with a community of guitar enthusiasts sharing pictures of their gear?

[–]xelested 0 points1 point ago

I never said it was wrong, and new gear is always sweet, but everything has limits.

This subreddit is about all things guitar, but the majority of posts consists of NGD/NAD posts, and I'm sorry but I just don't see the appeal of Oh look I got a new Fender Strat! Yes we are all happy for you but it is just a regular strat, and we have seen a thousand of them before.

[–]Popozuda72 0 points1 point ago

yes but it's that person's particular strat and it's special to them, and they're proud of it and want to show it off. that seems to be what reddit's about. I'm sick and tired of cat and dog pics, they all look the same to me, but someone up votes it.

[–]moofy[S] 2 points3 points ago

I think one post pointing out facts > 100 look at shitty photo of my new pedal post. And look at the healthy debate this post has started.

[–]marcoroman3 -1 points0 points ago

I agree, very much. I actually wish posts about gear were prohibited -- I just have zero interest.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Put up or shut up. Or go ask more questions in /r/drugs

[–]mainsoda -4 points-3 points ago

It seems like the mods agree. I had just posted a pic of my guitar and it was left off this subreddit. (I, for one, love drooling over gear)

[–]shadowmic7Schecter/Ovation/Fender 0 points1 point ago

We don't have an immediate say as to what makes it on the front page. Sometimes the spam filter grabs things that it shouldn't, and we're not always around to clear them out.

Sorry if we missed your post, but please feel free to delete and resubmit it.

[–]VUX -3 points-2 points ago

there are plenty of sites for that.

[–]Popozuda72 3 points4 points ago

...and r/guitar is certainly one of them. Nothing wrong with that.

Don't listen to this man!

I like seeing gear. I also like seeing videos.

Por que no los dos?

[–]oldtomfoolery 0 points1 point ago

musiciansfriend.com

[–]cob24 0 points1 point ago

Stop complaining and try starting one or two of those posts yourself if you feel that strongly about it.

[–]pibroch -2 points-1 points ago

Wow, lots of bitching. Why can't we just post what we want, and if you don't like it, ignore it or downvote it? I'll post a video of my band playing after this, and let's see if it gets upvoted. I doubt it will, because I'm not that great a guitar player.

[–]ELDERPE 0 points1 point ago

Where's your posts playing guitar? Visual aesthetics are just as important to a guitar player as the sound.

[–]samjowett -2 points-1 points ago

Clearly some people want to see these posts -- otherwise they'd be downvoted off of the front page.

[–]PforPanchetta511 1 point2 points ago

What makes it boring is the stupid questions posted by newbies. "How do I plug in my guitar?" with a picture of the patch cord hanging out of the soundhole of an acoustic or " My guitar is broken how do I fix it?" then they post a picture of a broken e string.

[–]Oldspooneye -3 points-2 points ago

[–]nnanook9 -2 points-1 points ago

Live and let live?

[–]carlEdwards -3 points-2 points ago

Because guitar players (end especially bass players) are such bad photographers?
