I was thinking about the past ones I'd had as I sit here alone for the first foreveralone NYE I've had in a while and realised that I kind of forced them to happen in a way that may have been interpreted as creepy. All three times I was spending NYE with my current significant other and each time they were distracted with getting champagne or lighting up some tree or just ignoring me and being an asshole. I didn't know a Midnight Kiss on NYE was even a thing. Maybe it's because I'm not American. Or because I always spend it at home with my parents (well, only one parent now) to watch the Sydney Harbour Bridge fireworks on TV.

The last two years, I actually had an opportunity for one (versus the previous 20 years of being finitely alone), but both times my g/f was 400 miles away at the mercy of her overbearing, anti-relationship-y parents.

Drinking had been going on for several hours, we were all in out mid-20's, and the female in question had worked with me for almost a year. We'd been out in social situations many times, I'd never made any inappropriate advances, basically I was "friend-zoned" for a long time.

She was attractive, and I would have gone after a chance any time if she had instigated it, but I kept my distance, and remained a good friend. We had spent countless hours talking on the phone to the wee hours of the morning, confiding secret details that usually are reserved for couples. I had been her presence while only in underwear or less multiple times (2 times skinny-dipping with several friends, another just hanging out and changing outfits for halloween).

I approached her and coyly asked: "I have no one else to kiss tonight, can I get a peck on the cheek too?"

Re-buff city, she made a point to not let me have a kiss, and then kiss 2 other guys at the party. She said: "I can't kiss you, you're too nice and it would be weird."

All other new years I've celebrated have been either rejected in another way, alone, only with a buddy or two, or didn't stay awake until midnight.
