Me right fucking now! I have to get up at 6am, it's 1am rightnow...I'm gonna hate myself in the morning.

[–]alphabeat 50 points51 points ago

I'm the same. In a way, there's two of me. Night me hates morning me, and doesn't give a shit, staying up until late playing games watching movies etc, morning me will curse night me for being such a douchebag and delivering such a shitty body in the morning. "What is this piece of crap? It's all tired and incoherent?! I'll show you night-me, I'll drink a metric shit-ton of coffee and dump you on your ass come 6 o'clock"

Oh damn. I've been reduced to Jerry Seinfeld?! I did watch a fair bit of it as a kid. What's the deal wiNO. NO! As a funny note though, it's 2am here, I'm on a huge sleep deficit, and I have to be up in a little over 5 hours. Self fulfilling prophecy FTW

There's actually a few theories about "willpower" as a series of economic trades made by slightly antagonistic different versions of the self at different times. The one that first comes to mind is called "Picoeconomics."

Same here, I only have two classes one at 11 then another at 3. I know when I wake up in the morning I'll be thinking how I'm definitely taking a nap between my classes. I'll be groggy all the way through class, then the moment I get to my car I get a second wind and I'm ready to spend the next two and a half hours surfing the internet.

Ok so I went to bed late last night, and had to get up really early this morning. I wake up and I am TOTALLY miserable. Like I would kill a child to sleep longer. But after 2 hours or so I felt totally awake, when I got back home around 5ish, I felt totally tired. I didnt want to sleep though, cause i know if I took a nap I wouldnt be able to sleep at night. And now its 12 and I'm not even tired. Bloody sleep.

How does this cycle correlate to your food intake? A big part of the problem could be that you're suffering from blood sugar peaks and valleys. Pay attention to it and see if you notice a pattern.

Edit: It could also be that you're not eating good food and not just the time of the day you're eating.

[–]yabbadabbadoo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I noticed this to. Now I make an effort to minimize my sugar intake and to eat smaller meals more frequently.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I follow this exact same pattern. wake at 7.20am feeling like shit, improve during day, exhausted to the point of passing out as soon as I get home 4.30pm, then wide awake until around 2...if I'm lucky.

[–]toastyfries2 0 points1 point ago

[–]mothsmoke 16 points17 points ago

The worst is when you actually give in to the exhaustion and actually decide to take a nap.

[–]sennheiserz 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

and then you wake up two hours later, covered in drool convinced its the next morning and completely unsure what to make of the fact that its 9:30 at night...

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if you keep your nap under 25 minutes, you wont give yourself a chance to reach the deeper phase of REM, which is what screws you up if you don't get through the entire hour and a half cycle.

[–]toastyfries2 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I take a nap or go to sleep early, it's a guarantee that something at work will break, and I'll get paged around 9:30PM.

If some of you feel that you have problems with getting to bed in the later hours of the night even if you've been up a long time and are really trying, , read up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_sleep_phase_syndrome Try not to self-diagnose, there could be many factors in your lifestyle that differ from something like this, which is a legitimate albeit less heard of sleep disorder.

I am currently trying to fix it myself but more severe cases require medication and vitamins such as melatonin supplements, avoiding bright lights at night, and changes to work/school shifts.

I'm fucked from 4pm-6pm. I catch the train to work, for a while my company placed me onsite at a client where I was forced to drive to work each day. This led to me taking naps in the car during my lunchbreak, I'd get 45-55 mins sleep in my car and be revitalised for the afternoon. It was absolute bliss. I even had a pillow!

So often. it's pretty frustrating. there's a few hours of mental deadness where you know it's too early to get to sleep and hold your schedule, but then you know if you ride it out you'll be struggling to relax later on.

Melatonin will put me nicely to sleep, but only for about half the night, sadly. So if I'm shorting myself on sleep it helps, but otherwise I wake up halfway through.

My weekends are routinely like this.

I usually stay up most of friday night, the whole of saturday night, and then most of sunday night, then back to a semi-normal pattern on weekdays.

I just like night time more than day time, and naps during the day are nice anyway.

[–]DanOlympia 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yep. Normally it's fine with me, but this last quarter (and this upcoming quarter) I've had 8am classes, which really screws up my schedule. Rather than getting tired earlier, I basically just get by with less sleep. If I'm left on my own (no job, vacation, etc) I tend to go to sleep between 12-2 and get up around 9-10.

So I decided to try and cave into the exhaustion when I got tired. Usually I fall asleep around 4am or so, but tonight, I crashed at 9pm, and woke up at 2am. Guess I'm used to only 5 hours of sleep, and I have no idea how I'll make it through the rest of the entire day. Seemed like a good idea at the time...

[–]zakool21 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It just means you should go to bed when you're tired at 10, before you have that second wind. To me, it seems like you're setting yourself up for a trap of sleeplessness if you ignore your body's own cues to sleep.

[–]InfinitelyThirsting 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, the point is you're tired at SEVEN, dead tired, for an hour or so. But then wake up more and more as it gets later.

[–]milliamp 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

After 8 PM or so I start to get my second wind. If I go to sleep at 8 I will be wake up around 1:30 or or so and stay that way for several hours (just in time to have to be getting ready to leave).

I was exhausted last night at 10:30pm and I went to bed only to find I was even more exhausted in the AM. But when I go to sleep around 1AM and wake up around the same time I am fine.

[–]sfgeek 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everyone is raised to believe we need 8 hours of sleep, when in fact SOME people need 8, but for many it's too much. I recently learned that I operate best on about 6-6.5 hours of sleep. Anymore and I'm tired, any less and I'm tired.

[–]rox0r 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you snore? I have a friend who figure out after he got the "darth vader breathing mask" that he hadn't been sleeping right b/c of the apnea for like 2 years. His mood significantly increased.

[–]sidoma_kismet 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope. I'm not a snorer. I know a few people with sleep apnea and it's pretty intense. I just think I need less sleep than others. I also function more efficiently at night.

[–]rox0r -1 points0 points ago

[–]ryy0 0 points1 point ago

I get that sometimes, as in several times a week. When that happens I would just let myself pass out for 6-7 hours (overshoots happen). I'd wake up some couple hours past midnight and don't sleep until the next night. Caffeinate as necessary during the day.

[–]Astronoid 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fortunately for me I'm often able to do my work in the late night hours and sleep as late as I desire. When I don't have that option, I walk around like a zombie all day. Post midnight is when my brain is awake and at it's most productive. Shame to have to waste those hours trying in vain to sleep.

[–]Optamix 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I started taking Melatonin to help regulate this. It's been really bad the last few weeks.

The first 2 or 3 nights it seemed to help, but last night I was up all night again.

[–]transfuse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. So I go to sleep about an hour or two after I get home from college. I also use Flux and a screen dimming tool (ScreenShade). It's so much easier to sleep with the light on, above the covers, fully dressed and with the TV on at 6pm than it is with everything turned off, under the sheets at 1am.

What is your evening schedule like? Do you stimulate yourself with the computer at night? Do you get enough natural light in the morning? Optical stimulation is the worst for making your brain follow somewhat natural cycles.

If you play WoW and expect to go to sleep right away good, f-ing luck. I quit WoW which would leave me wired and now i don't stay up l ate playing, and i can fall asleep much easier. Also, the PvP aspect would make me twitchy with adrenaline.

[–]dude2k5 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well Im always on the computer of course, half is my job, other half is fun. I ride bikes to get tired. I smoke to get tired. I try pills to get tired. I dont do really crazy shit on the internet, just basically read anything on reddit and stuff. I dont play games much, though I just got a ps3, and I know thats not going to help at night, hahahah. But I have no idea, I've tried everything in the book. On the internet and doctors. Still sucks. Im up and around all day, and so I think Im getting enough sunlight. Its not always falling asleep however, I cant stay asleep. I wake up like 6 times + every night, which doesnt allow me to get much REM sleep. I wake very tired. So If i cant fall asleep, Ill just stay up, and if I can, Ill wake up so many times, I rather not sleep. Sucks

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, and that's why I missed both of my classes today. Well; add to that some anxiety that prevented me from falling asleep.

I usually crash at about 8pm but am wide awake by 10:30-11:00. If I try to go to sleep at 8 I just wind up waking up at 1 am, otherwise I can't fall asleep until about 1am. Two things help:

  • Light diner
  • Energy drink at about 4-5pm
