[Episode Discussion] S02E05 - "Gershwin and Bunkum" (self.BoardwalkEmpire)

I loved this episode. Everything that Boardwalk is capable of being when running on all cylinders, a deep character study, a twisting political drama, and a violent action series this episode nailed. The Richard scenes were at times tragic, hopeful, and even badass. We got to see a glimpse of Jimmy's capabilities as a a political player and leader. He did well with his speech but he lacks powerful allies. I don't doubt his intelligence but he can be impetuous and can underestimate his other political players. Nucky was downright ruthless as ever, and it seems obvious that he is the best man for the job of running Atlantic City. Whether he was entertaining the attorney general, getting crucial info out of Eli, or putting Jimmy on the spot, Nucky expertly juggled so many situations. The eruptions of violence were certainly welcome as well. The Eli Nucky wrestling scene showed how beneath everything else, their relationship boils down to brotherly resentment, which for Nucky seems to be about supremacy and for Eli seems to be about respect. We see Eli losing control again later as he murders an nervous "ally" and seemed to enjoy doing so. Jimmy and Harrow killing the old racist was of course very satisfying but it will be interesting to see whether Jimmy can learn to solve his problems more diplomatically going forward. I could have gone for some more scenes of Van Alden, as seeing him slowly unraveling has been an awesome place to see his character go and he will certainly be a huge wildcard going forward. I also missed Chalky and his always engrossing monologues. I'm excited to see where the season goes from here and I hope the show can hit a high note like this episode again this season.

Nice comment. My favorite part of the episode was seeing Nucky entertain his prosecuting attorney, who stumbles drunkenly into the office demanding cold champagne and oysters. And it's Nucky, the town's biggest criminal, sitting in stark contrast - in his office quietly doing paperwork. Oh, the irony.

Shea Whigham (Eli) was amazing this episode! He felt somewhat underused this whole season, and we didn't really see much of his capabilities last season, but now this! Such a perfect episode...
[–]UncleVinnyShe begged for it 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Whigham's acting just prior to the fight with Nucky was astounding. He was contrite and humble, but also -acting- more contrite and humble than he actually was! Incredible stuff.
[–]snappergk 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
Yes that was a beautifully shot scene. I can't get over how perfect this episode was
[–]eazy_eastwoodAl Capone 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Reminded me of the scene in goodfellas when they were digging up billy batts. Also in the godfather when clemenza leaves his car next to the reeds with his dead traitor driver inside

Laughed at Christopher MacDonald playing golf. Shooter McGavin!
[–]KyleFromNJ 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
I was hoping someone was jokingly referred to as "Shooter" or "Happy."
[–]BubbaBexley 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
Lol I didn't catch that

Pete: "People come out here, they get up to all kinds of foolishness. That's not what these woods is for....These woods is for living."
This season, each new episode becomes my new favourite.
I loved the opening shot of Margate Beach. Beautiful. The visuals on this show are always so gorgeous. The final shot, the marshland framed by the moonlight as Eli dug ... wow.
I didn't think it was likely Richard would die this episode, but I was so worried when he put the gun in his mouth and so relieved when the dog showed up. The scenes with Richard and the trappers were wonderful.
Glenmore: "He's an old soldier who just keeps on fighting. Don't you, boy?" Richard: "What does he fight for?" Glenmore: "You'll have to ask him."
Glenmore: "He's an old soldier who just keeps on fighting. Don't you, boy?"
Richard: "What does he fight for?"
Glenmore: "You'll have to ask him."
I liked the parallels between the dog and Richard. Pete said the dog knew who he was. The dog saved Richard, and Richard's trying to figure out what the dog knows -- who he is and what to fight for.
I was so relieved that Jimmy told Richard he would fight for him "right down to the last bullet."
The Richard-centric parts were what I enjoyed most, but the rest of the episode was fascinating too. Nucky's federal case is being taken care of (or so he hopes). The Commodore's health can't be kept a secret from everyone much longer. Margaret is getting more and more frightened the more aware she is about the world she and Nucky live in. Jimmy's a prideful loose cannon or a player to be reckoned with, can't decide. (I watched the scalping scene through my fingers. Yikes.) Nucky's taken off the gloves where the people who betrayed him are concerned. Katy is sleeping with Owen already. And Eli killed George. Damn. I can't wait to see where all of this leads.
(Happy Reddit birthday, OP!)

Jimmy's neither... he's a pawn.
[–]Eddiemag247 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
Van Alden is my favorite character closely followed by Richard. The scenes with Richard were very heartbreaking. Jack Huston is a great actor.
This episode just had so many great moments. The fight between Nucky and Eli was especially great.
[–]baelwulf 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
When he popped open the book with Angela's drawing and his old photograph on adjacent pages I was like "Shiiiiiit"
[–]Everything-is-MagicTime to come home. 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
Not to mention how good he looked throughout the whole episode; it seems like the show wanted to attract attention to it more than before. All the lighting and angles just made him look downright handsome, as if to emphasize that maybe he's putting too much power into his injury defining him as person.
[–]baelwulf 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
Completely agreed. He's developing into a character that's very easy to identify with, even if his situation is somewhat unique. I find it hard to empathize with many of the characters on this show; he's the exception.

I want that old photograph. It was a nice photograph.
[–]TedFromTheFutureThe Specialist 20 points21 points22 points 7 months ago
Katy is nude! My life is complete.
[–]treycash 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
I am pulling for a Owen,Kate, and Margret threesome.
[–]WTFalreadytaken 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
Awesome episode, cant wait to see how it pans out down the line. I hope the Attorney General is not setting up Nucky. Also, not really sure how Jimmy can handle whatever is coming up. This season is sooo much more intense than the last one.
[–]Tepoztecatl 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
It's too early in the season for everything to be alright for Nucky.
[–]goonerredandwhite 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
God. i had a feeling that nucky was being set up. i thought he ws going to ask what assurances he had, and was dissapointed and confused that a man of his office And experience didnt ask tgat question
[–]genericwit 18 points19 points20 points 7 months ago
This episode was amazing... I was so worried about Harrow, and I'm so glad Jimmy handled his question ("Would you fight for me?") well. This episode really hammered in what an amazing pair the two of them really are--how well they work together. Especially when you consider the fact that Harrow is probably the only good ally--and asset-- that Jimmy has left.
Also, happy cake day!
[–]Everything-is-MagicTime to come home. 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
My favorite subtlety during the episode was the parallel between Jimmy and Angela, and Jimmy and Richard. When Angela asked Jimmy if there was anything else that he's fought for, he doesn't respond; he goes over and cradles her head. Later, after realizing why Richard was in the woods and seeing his reaction to "right down to the last bullet", he does the same. It just shows that Jimmy really cares about both of them, and I think he realized during both those moments that he was severely disconnected from them since he's started the whole business with the Commodore. The cinematography and writing in this show is beyond superb, IMO.
Also, I was in shock and amazement at the last scene with Jimmy and Richard--- "Who are you?" "I'm a soldier." BAMF all the way!
[–]genericwit 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
I missed that parrallel at first! Thanks for reminding me. And I whole-heartedly agree with the badassitude of the "I'm a soldier," quote, and especially the ironic scalping of the person who proudly slaughtered the Sioux.
[–]DrNgo 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I would've loved to see what Harrow would've done if he was at that meeting when the old guy smacked Jimmy
[–]dustin_pledgeDrunk on Hootch 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
I feel so bad for Richard every time I watch BE. I'm so rooting for him to be happy, even in some small way.
[–]towerofterror 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
Was anybody else surprised by the scalping? What's the point, just to kill of your creditors?
[–]birds_the_word 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
That scene was great. I liked the irony of it.
[–]turtleshellmagicThese woods is for livin. 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
The scalping was beautiful! Serves that sadistic Indian killer right.
[–]Tepoztecatl 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
You may need to rewatch the episode. People are nervous because the Commodore hasn't been present lately, and money from the investors was lost in the explosion. Jimmy needed to take charge as the boss and teach people not to fuck with him. The more gruesome the punishment, the clearer the message.
[–]krucz36 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
i agree with this...more of his way of saying I will be respected, and all your forms and rituals are bullshit. kind of letting them know they're dealing with someone who will do whatever it takes.
[–]klyonradGovernment 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
it seems right what you're telling there; still... it was quite disgusting.
[–]towerofterror -8 points-7 points-6 points 7 months ago
I'm not asking for a plot recap, and you're just repeating exactly what Jimmy's mom told him.
A message is great, but presumably he wants these people to help him in the future, not just fear him. Killing the dude seems incredibly disproportionate, and likely to alienate his few potential allies, UNLESS he's planning on not paying the investors back.
[–]Tepoztecatl 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
You would be a terrible gangster.
[–]towerofterror -2 points-1 points0 points 7 months ago
Real gangsta ass niggas know how to get respect WITHOUT destroying their sole support system. Jimmy has a lot to learn.
[–]Smithy021 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Some say you can rule by respect.. but other say you rule with fear! which is it :P
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
I think it was to send a message, since that guy was telling him to be respectful in a pretty disrespectful and condescending way. It kind of solidifies the type of Crime boss he is going to be completely opposite of Nucky's political methods.
[–]Chipmoonk 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
Jimmy joined the Inglorious Basterds with Richard as the head scalper? Badass.
[–]AviciiFTW 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
Incredible. Harrow and Jimmy make one of the most dangerous pairs out of anyone involved in the trade. I was convinced harrow was going to end himself, you could tell he felt extremely alone, and thought he was a pawn to Jimmy...Jimmy's response was extremely significant.
[–]DistantRelatives 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
Best episode this season.
[–]AppleAtrocityThe Tin Woodsman 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
Eli and Nucky duking it out...just awesome. Anyone else think Nucky was going to ask him to kill Jimmy when he said there was one thing he could do for him?
[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 7 months ago
Nanana na ...na. The reason that I disagree is because Eli broke Nucky's trust first. He turned his back on his blood and only returned to avoid his unholy wrath when he felt his only way to succeed against Nucky was basically out of the picture. He shows his treacherous nature by confessing his collaborators weaknesses and just overall proved he was not a very honorable person. Nucky could have never trusted him again.
[–]AppleAtrocityThe Tin Woodsman 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
I know. That is why I thought Nucky was going to accept his apology and tell him to kill Jimmy to prove his loyalty. Family over everything is how I thought he would roll, but no.
Also how fucked is Eli now? Jesus christ that was a dumb thing to do in the heat of passion.
[–]n1njaro... I bet it all 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
Nah dude, Nucky could react however he wanted. The fact the Eli was willing to back stab his own blood is far more worst than if they were just friends. I mean can you just imagine if you had a brother do that to you? There's no coming back from that.
[–]hoojman 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
Hooray for me finding this subreddit. Hooray for this episode! Shit just got real.
[–]AppleAtrocityThe Tin Woodsman 13 points14 points15 points 7 months ago
Fuck yeah it did. When Richard put the gun in his mouth my heart stopped.

I screamed "NO!" at the computer monitor. Soooooo glad it turned out okay.
[–]GringoDeMaio 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
A tv show hasn't really had me worried in a long time. I was actually scared he'd do it. I mean I sort of knew he wouldn't since he just got bumped up to series regular, but Jack Huston still sold me on the possibility that he'd pull the trigger.
[–]rastafaustian 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
Dude, just found this subred today. This season is going to be epic.
[–]krucz36 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
the scene at the very end was amazingly photography.
[–]handsomewolves 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
i was surprised this episode didn't cut away after the initial violence. Normally we see blood and guts for only a second then we cut back and we understand what happened. with this episode the director pulled no punches and we get some pretty gruesome scenes. Face splattering and scalping.
[–]ichibanstunna 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
I wonder if they're going to use the moonshiners in the woods for future business. Richard does say that it's very strong. Also, since Jimmy's supply is blown up, are the two agents going to take the blame for this or will there be a war against Nucky? On next weeks preview they show the butcher (going to be a very interesting character) hanging somebody. Any guesses to who that might be? Can't wait until the next episode.
