Reddit, one truth you have a hard time accepting. (self.AskReddit)
submitted 3 months ago by iisbaws
It could be philosophical, situational, whatever.
One truth I have the most difficulty accepting is: taxes will rise
[–]iamstephano 132 points133 points134 points 3 months ago
That I can't think of a new color.
[–]BeamServer 29 points30 points31 points 3 months ago
Colour of Magic. Go find it.
[–]leakycauldron 31 points32 points33 points 3 months ago
First off, only Wizzards and cats see Octarine, so iamstephano will never see it.
Secondly, Octarine is not a different colour. It's just a greeny yellow-purple (if it were seen through a mauve lense).
Lastly, Ook.

There's a 50% chance you're above the median intelligence.

There's a 50% chance you're a bear.

Wrong. If you are on the Internet and reading this, there is a 0% chance that you are a bear.

There's a 50% chance you're equal to or below the median intelligence.
There's a 50% chance you're equal to or above the median intelligence.
... You guys are not that smart.
[–]baconisokay 60 points61 points62 points 3 months ago
Actually, since intelligence is a continuous distribution rather than a discrete one the odds of being precisely a particular value are 0. So a 50% chance of being above the median and a 50% chance of below the median is completely correct.
[–]Hi_Kate 10 points11 points12 points 3 months ago
If there are odd people on the planet, one of them has median intelligence.Precisely.
[–]selflessGene 10 points11 points12 points 3 months ago
Individuals below 50% are much less likely to know how to read, type, use an internet site such as reddit, and have the self-awareness to post a comment saying "I'm not that smart"
You're not that smart.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago*
Smartness is a matter of state. Motivation is really the main quantifier of living a fulfilling, thoughtful, and progressive life.
It's not the ability of being able to play the piano at the level of the virtuoso, or produce ground breaking research, or even be able to interpret a movie or book on a deeper level that most people do. Every single person starts off with pretty much the same kind of brain and body, capable of learning and restructuring itself for adeptness.
The biggest difference in why those people were capable of reaching that level of virtuosity is that they were capable of motivating themselves through all the difficult stages of learning. That they still practiced the piano, continued on with their PhD, read through things that they disagreed with fundamentally, even when they wanted to defenestrate the piano, thesis, or book.
Find things that you find valuable to yourself, that you truly believe are valuable things to work on. Motivation comes easier that way. It's only when we start doing things because we think other people will find value in them, that motivation for the long term becomes an arduous and demoralizing characteristic of our lives.
And anyone that makes you feel bad for not being at the same state of progression in their lives as them is a fucking idiot. They don't actually understand that each person is capable of pretty much the same thing, and that the world would be a much better place if we helped each other reach our full potential, rather than quash each other for being slightly ahead. Those people value primarily looking superior, and that's ultimately going to prevent them from reaching their full potential.

Kids who do absolutely no school work all year long and who skip half of their classes and disrupt everybody when they do show up will pass for the year.
[–]starlinguk 33 points34 points35 points 3 months ago*
I know a boy like that. Hyperintelligent, spends most his time playing WoW and skipping class, other kids hate his guts because he's a pain in class/the ass, and he only has As and A+s.
To be honest, I think he's bored out of his skull.
[–]GlueNickel 11 points12 points13 points 3 months ago
Its hard to care when the formula for success has been the same for the past 20 years. Learn some shit, take a test, learn some shit, take a test. I dont understand how this is hard.

Question: My grandchildren are being home-schooled. Will this prepare them for life?
[–]mbgluck 119 points120 points121 points 3 months ago
no
[–]orangefly 32 points33 points34 points 3 months ago
not necessarily true....you would need to get them in a ton of outside social activities though....
[–]VonWolfhaus 21 points22 points23 points 3 months ago
Ignore everyone on here. I was homeschooled up until college, got in a good school, had a ton of friends, graduated on time, and now have a normal job. The problem with Homeschooling is that kids tend to have no social experience before they are submitted to (college/highschool). My parents had me involved with a lot of outside social activities so I was forced to become social.
Sports, clubs, activities, home-school co-ops, make them get jobs from a young age.
Homeschool kids are smart, and put a lot of merit in their scholastic performance, they just don't tend to have social skills. This is something that can very easily be remedied.

In all honesty: Not everything is about me. i.e. what anyone else is doing is not because of me, or due to me, or has anything to do with me- that's their thing, issue, problem or whatever. And vice versa.

What a bloody relief, eh?
[–]Nondescriptdude 7 points8 points9 points 3 months ago
but I thought everything was about you...
[–]MissIsis 234 points235 points236 points 3 months ago
Some people are really just not nice. Like, not a single part of them cares about other people. Blows my mind that they can live with themselves.
[–]Flamesblade4 56 points57 points58 points 3 months ago
I'm a real cynical bastard, and I have a hard time accepting that there are people out there who actually ARE nice with no strings attached. I meet a few of these people every now and then, and my mind absolutely refuses to believe that they are genuinely nice people. Because of that, and other issues I've had with people in my life, I trust very, VERY few people.
[–]evenstarwen 57 points58 points59 points 3 months ago
My boyfriend can be like this. He thinks I'm naive for wanting to believe the best in people. He once said that I lived in a fantasy world. I told him I know his experiences made him the person he was, but so did mine. The world that shaped me isn't any less real, just different. That means we can help each other out. With him, I might learn to be more street smart, and hopefully to me he might also open himself up more and more.

[–]dawnnieee 52 points53 points54 points 3 months ago
always blew my mind and still does as I drive a highway and see so many lights (cars) going their ways. "Where are they all going?" On another tangent, can you imagine us all being able to transport like the "Jetsons"? Would that even be possible? Would hate to be the "air traffic controllers"!
[–]killer_tofu89 17 points18 points19 points 3 months ago
Nah, we're all just in your head.
[–]Veonik 24 points25 points26 points 3 months ago
This is simply mind-boggling. Driving on the freeway, I get caught up in wondering where people are going and where they came from. It's absolutely unfathomable to imagine SEVEN BILLION people all just living out their lives.
[–]raabbasi 10 points11 points12 points 3 months ago

[–]evenstarwen 370 points371 points372 points 3 months ago*
The heart is more fickle than the songs would have you believe. You can promise forever today and mean it with all that you are, but in five months, a year, maybe more...everything has changed. It's hard when it's nobody's fault, just the two of you growing apart as you grow up. Then you don't have some huge, dramatic fight to blame the broken promises on, just two good, decent people who used to love each other and then changed their minds. Or maybe just one person moved away, while the other got left behind, and that's even more hurtful.
From then on, you'll start second guessing yourself, because if you were painfully wrong about something that once felt so absolutely, perfectly right, then what if you're wrong about this, too? You can no longer trust how you feel. But eventually, if you're lucky, maybe you'll learn that after the heart has done its job of falling in love, you'll need the will to stay there. Love isn't just about feelings; it's a day to day commitment to making it last.
When you're young, however, it's so difficult to let go of the myth that when you find that one person, everything will fall into place. Because it's meant to be. Well, there is no "meant to be". You have to make it happen. What you need is to find a person who's worth the work of making it happen.
EDIT: I can NOT believe someone gave me reddit gold for this. And on my cake day, too! Thank you so much, adubbz. That was a wonderful, if undeserved, surprise.
[–]aprildh08 15 points16 points17 points 3 months ago
This almost made me cry at work.
[–]rhapsodyinblue 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
And I just cried. The one I thought I was going to spend my life with is leaving me, and it's hard to accept. Where did I do wrong, and what did i do? I loved him with every part of me, and was willing to do anything. But he wants to "be alone for awhile".
It hurts. I can't even picture myself wanting to be with anyone again, because I just can't see it ever being as good as this was.
[–]evenstarwen 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
hug It's alright, just cry. You can't see it right now, but it won't always hurt like this.
[–]brauchen 17 points18 points19 points 3 months ago

I went through this for the first time last year. You've put it into words very well.
[–]evenstarwen 11 points12 points13 points 3 months ago
Maybe because I've been there, too. I had to accept that no matter how much someone hurt me, it wasn't because he intentionally set out to break my heart. He was just a person who loved me at one point, until he grew and became a person who no longer did. He wasn't evil, just human. Sucks, but moving on became easier after that.
[–]oneAngrySonOfaBitch 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
i love you... for all that's worth :'(.
Thanks for putting this into words.
[–]atatassault 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Relationships are like any other process. Left by itself, with no work provided to maintain, it will erode and decay. You have to take measures to continue a relationship and want to make it work. If you just treat your partner as somebody who's there to please you, you will never be able to form any long term relationship.
Commitment, Selflessness, and the willingness to make something work are required for any relationship.
[–]showtimesynergy 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago
I want to show this to a guy I just called it quits with. He is younger than me and acting like I am ruining some chances he thinks we had for a great relationship. But the problem is that one person cannot do 90% of the work; there needs to be mutual efforts. He won't admit it, but he doesn't think I'm worth the effort yet he still wants to be in a relationship.
That person needs to grow up. My parents have been together 26 years, and they say that the first thing you learn about marriage is that you need to work towards happily-ever-after for the rest of your lives. It doesn't just fall into your lap after the wedding kiss.
[–]ellister 35 points36 points37 points 3 months ago
That those beautiful pictures of nebulae are actually colorized.
[–]BrosephineBaker 9 points10 points11 points 3 months ago
What? I can't believe that. So sad.
[–]CDchrysalis 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
Not colorized as in changing the colors to make it prettier, but giving visibility to gases that aren't visible to the human eye. They're not making up the way it's laid out, just the color it appears to be, and only so we can see them. Does that make it any better?
[–]BrosephineBaker 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
Yes. Thank you.
[–]WadePool 66 points67 points68 points 3 months ago

Not trying to be tactless or blunt, just genuinely curious (and hey, maybe it's something that only seems insurmountable).

Isn't there a Agoraphobic Hookup Website, sort of like Christian singles? Then you can meet another with your condition and stay home together all day.

I have chronic unipolar depression and I'm pretty sure I'll always have that too. At least you get to be manic, that actually looks kind of fun. I'm sure it actually isn't, but it looks like it from my perspective.

[–]ManicParroT 17 points18 points19 points 3 months ago
I'm not sure that things would automatically be better if you had more intelligent people in power.
I mean, look at Zimbabwe. They have one of the best educated Cabinets in the world. Robert Mugabe has something like 7 degrees. Not Mickey Mouse degrees or honorary degrees either - he got a gang of degrees from the University of London, mostly by distance education.
And, well, we all know what he's done to his country.
Of course ideally you want intelligent, well meaning people in charge of your country, but failing that I think it would be better to have stupid malicious people instead of smart malicious people. At least the stupid people will hopefully have trouble working the system.
[–]ninjarxa 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
think of all the time, money, and effort we would save if we didn't have to fight politicians on shit like SOPA, basic human rights, and religion in politics. we could focus on actual problems and not burn money trying to fight dumb shit. for fuck's sake there are still states that have to fight creationists trying to get their bullshit into the classroom.
[–]40oz2freedom 15 points16 points17 points 3 months ago

[–]JaronK 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Yeah, I just can't contemplate it without being really... off. So I just adopted the motto of "Immortality or Die Trying" and I'll stick with that without thinking about it.
[–]kevinstonge 33 points34 points35 points 3 months ago
This used to bother me but recently I discovered a great way to think about it. If you want to imagine what it will be like after you have died, simply remember what it was like before you were born. You lacked consciousness for about 14 billion years straight and it didn't bother you so I'm sure another 14 billion years + will be fine as well.
[–]zerton 50 points51 points52 points 3 months ago
Yeah but that sucks.
[–]jeni_cote 13 points14 points15 points 3 months ago
It's a really shitty end of the stick on one side, but an amazing, marvellous end on the other. We got the chance to actually experience this and live this, whereas a bajillion of other sperms didn't. I imagine that when the time has come when I'm old and have lived a long life, a forever-sleep won't seem so bad. But being 22, it scares me so much. I have legit panic attacks about this. Especially since right now, it just feels like everything is going by so quickly. Every day is just increasing in speed and I have no idea how this has happened, since what felt like a few years ago when I was in grade 5 / 6 / 7 I couldn't wait to get out of school because time would be passing so slow.
[–]ChrisJL 17 points18 points19 points 3 months ago
Nah man, it's different. In death you are having something taken away, whereas before you were born you had no consciousness to begin with. It's ones loss of their consciousness after having known it that is frightening.
[–]iamstephano 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
I used to think about that a lot, but one day I decided to live my life without thinking about the future because you are going to die whether you like it or not, might as well enjoy what you've got left.

[–]Worst_Idea_Ever 70 points71 points72 points 3 months ago
I work with children. The worst thing is realizing that you can't help some kids. That they're problems are beyond what you are capable of changing.
And then there are the kids who's issues are beyond what anybody is capable of changing.
Usually, it's not their fault; malnutrition during infancy, awful genetics, etc. But those kids are going to be fucked up forever because that's the hand they were dealt.
But that's not all.
Then there's the implication. Those kids are fucked, and there's nothing that can be done about it. The fact that you or I can be successful/smart/read is just as arbitrary as those kids' situations.
Never feel entitled. Never feel like you deserved/earned something. You didn't. All the causative factors to what you have become are completely beyond your control. You are what you are, the people around you are what they are, and all you can do is make the best of it and try to make a positive impact.
Then there's the other thing I realized a few weeks ago. One kid I have asked me to look up some words. For the sake of anonymity, I won't say what they were. She couldn't even pronounce one of them, but she knew exactly how it was spelled.
She wouldn't tell me where she got the words from, but I figured "Fuck it, I'm always down for kids learning new shit," so I looked them up. They were both different types of cancer. She got the words from her doctor, who said she might have either one. Nobody would tell her what they meant, so she found out from me.
I have no idea why she didn't google them herself, though. Or why she asked me of all people. Maybe she didn't want her friends to know. Maybe she had an inkling that it was something bad and was afraid to do it yourself (like checking your exam grades online, but 100 times worse). Or maybe she made up the whole thing for some reason beyond my understanding.
Regardless, it's popped into my head whenever I've come across something I'm scared of doing, like talking to a girl or facing an interview. How fucking insignificant are those things compared to facing death as a child?
I've got some issues in my life, but frankly, I've got it pretty good. Most people have bigger problems in life than I do, and I have no right to complain about anything.

I cannot believe that the universe is an infinite size. I just can't. How can something go on forever!?!
Yeah, I'm a physicist.
[–]Dymn 12 points13 points14 points 3 months ago
IMO, it'd be just as hard to wrap your mind around a finite universe.
[–]asswipe_johnson 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
I don't even get that far. I'm struggling with the "something" part, the fact there is something rather rather than nothing.

That people are just assholes because they can or are just hardwired to be. It's not because they are having a bad day or whatever, it's just that they get satisfaction out of making other people feel terrible.
[–][deleted] 23 points24 points25 points 3 months ago
There's a lots of stuff I WONT do. That cute girl I see everyday on my college? Won't meet her. All those great books and music? Won't read/hear it. Finishing and record some of songs I write on guitar? Won't happen. All cool things I could build in my work? Won't happen. All kinds of science that are interesting - biology, physics, maths - you can't know even 0.001% of fun stuff there is to know. Thousands of beautiful places around the world? Won't see 98% of them.
I guess my expectations towards life were a bit exaggereted when I was a kid.
[–]Crimeodial 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago
Why not try to make some of that stuff happen?
[–]popwhatpopwhat 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
You can change the cute girl situation. Just go say hi.
[–]m_Pony 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
You won't get to experience those things sitting on your ass bitching about it.
First: never listen to a song you've already heard unless you really like it. Constantly find new music to like. If you have trouble with that you can start with the "1,000 albums to listen to before you die" (2005 version).
Cute girl? You see her everyday. Go say hello, even if it's just a hello, or a "hi, I'm really shy but I think you're pretty."
Sounds like all you need is one success to build on and you can go from there.
[–]wadely 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
Why not?
[–]BigToasty 22 points23 points24 points 3 months ago

That I'm probably not going to be a senator, or otherwise hold a position of wealth, prestige, and power (from which to do good of course!).
The reasons are many, but one of the biggies is that masturbation video floating around that I made when I took some Adderall awhile back. What a dumbass.
[–]Veonik 12 points13 points14 points 3 months ago
You think a masturbation video is going to keep you from being a massively successful entrepreneur? Dude, get over it. You are The Next Big Thing. Believe it, make it happen. That's all it takes.

also the whole universe is expanding but not techincally into anything(cant wait for the ndt ama)
[–]showtimesynergy 12 points13 points14 points 3 months ago
We don't actually ~know~ if our universe is singular or part of other in a clump of multiverses. So, infinity may not be correct in relation to our universe.

That despite the fact we think of down as down, it really isn't and technically everything is always upside down. We're also rotating constantly and traveling through space pretty fast. I'm not clever or good looking. To be honest, I accepted the latter a while ago, but I always felt ok because I got by on smarts. But now I'm in college, it's obvious that I'm far from smart.
[–]Mighty_Morphin 9 points10 points11 points 3 months ago
That in 200 years, no one will know that I had existed.
I will be irrelevant. No one will know the things that I've done or what I liked/disliked. Who I loved. It'll almost be like I had never existed. Like the thoughtpolice had vaporized me.
Of course, I could always try and make a legacy or become famous or whatever. But the likelihood of that is slim. I'm sure that maybe down the line my decendents will try to trace the family tree or whatever. But even then, I'll only be a name.
[–]ignoramusaurus 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago
I cant go back and redo things which are so obvious to me now.

"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
[–]philge 43 points44 points45 points 3 months ago
But that's what makes everything so precious. Let's face it, if life were eternal, it would be pointless. The only thing that gives life value is death.

Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.
There is no escape from the drudgery of life. I can overlook it most days, but some days it feels like an avalanche. Dirty dishes, laundry, toilet, etc. I know I could hire someone to do these things, but the grind is there, regardless.

Once you are born that's it, you don't get a second pick ... If you don't like your family/culture etc then its fuckin hard to leave.
The fact that nothing in life lasts, if there is afterlife then life loses it's meaning. And if there is no afterlife, then life was wasted.
I will probably die a lot younger than most people, if not, I will probably die alone from old age.
A lot of people stupider/less hardworking than me are doing better in life just because of circumstance.

We will continue destroying the Earth. I don't care how many singers/bands make songs about it. I don't care how many documentaries there are. I don't care how much 'awareness you raise'. People won't give a fuck UNTIL they see the negative effects in action. Otherwise they'll shrug it off..
