Part of me wants to be a Chicago homer and pick Goose Island, but I feel like no one holds a candle to Unibroue out of Quebec. If you told me I'd be stuck drinking no other beer than their La Fin du Monde for the rest of my life, I'd be okay with that.

[–]deepfriedbutter 7 points8 points ago

Man,... La Fin, Trois Pistoles (My fav), Maudite, Terrible, Ephemere, Blanche de Chambly, Don de Dieu, Raftman... the hits just keep on coming!

Goose Island is fairly boring outside of Bourbon County Stout.

I drink a lot of Fin du Monde. It has a really, really impressive quality:price ratio.

[–]V1llage1diot 1 point2 points ago

Fucking yes! In Louisiana many people haven't heard of La Fin du Monde yet because miller light is "just too damn tasty to pass up." Knowing someone else shares epicness of Unibroue makes me want to open a bottle right now, hold my pinky finger out while drinking, and yell "I was drinking this shit before it was cool, bitches!"

I have a growler of Terrible in my fridge right now and no one to drink it with. (I just had to grab it when it went on tap at a local store) I think I'm just gonna have a really good night or two. Can't waste it.

La Fin is the most absurdly delicious beer I have ever tasted. I tried it a year ago and when choosing fancy beer for fancy night, I havent chosen anything else since.

[–]Corriemuchloch 1 point2 points ago

This is such an amazing example of a weissbier. It's expensive, but it's absolutely worth it if you've never had it before.

Also, I'm not sure I could ever drink only this beer. It's amazing, but I think I'd prefer something darker and maltier for my singular beer experience.

EDIT: Fun fact - Weihenstephaner is the oldest continuously operational commercial brewery in the world =)

Surly is my favorite brewer, located here in Minnesota. My favorite beer of theirs is Surly Smoke, but they are all really good. It's delicious.

Other honorable mention favorites: Great Divide Brewing, Breckenridge Brewing, Rush River, Flat Earth, Avery Brewing, and Southern Tier.

Also hailing from the great state of 12,000 lakes, I will have to try some Surly Smoke.

My favorite beer from Minnesota has to be Grainbelt Nordeast from the August Schell Brewing Company. It's a different type of tasting beer, but one I just can't get enough of.

[–]Eisnel 2 points3 points ago

As a fellow Minnesotan, I love Surly. Both for their fine beers, and for the incredible force that they've become in the MN craft brewing scene. They fought to get one of our dumb Blue Laws changed. One down, dozens to go.

And I concur about Avery, their Maharaja imperial IPA is currently my favorite beer.

Bell's is my favorite... Whenever their Oberon brew is out, I keep my fridge stocked :)

  • Rogue Dead Guy

[–]snowpup 2 points3 points ago

I am a huge fan and former employee of Great Lakes Brewing Company. I worked in the restaurant and did some odd jobs in the brewery. People in Cleveland lose their minds over Christmas Ale, grocery stores have a problem keeping it stocked and the kegs run out long before Christmas. Try their others! The Edmund Fitzgerald Porter has always been a favorite of mine but they are all good.

As a Minnesota guy I'm a huge fan of our local breweries. Surly, Summit, Town Hall, Flat Earth, and New Glarus (Wisconsin) all make some incredible beers and they're all made within an hour of where I live.

Brewdog. I love their origins, their ethos as a company, their personality, their fantastic beers, their bars AND their food.

I don't like their casual misogyny in both their beer names and their promotional material.

Their best beer is a hard choice, depends what you're after and what you're eating/doing... but Tokyo is staggeringly good (and it's 18.2%... so that's nice...).

Good god man, I'm from Portland!! You can't just say "favorite brewery," or "favorite beer," there are so many to choose from!! You have to define your parameters. Even just for, say, IPAs. I love Bridgeport's IPA for it's flavor and availibility, but I like Ninkasi's Total Domination for the aftertaste. I happen to enjoy Widmer's Drop Top Amber, but I also like Sam Adams. And as much of a fan of Guiness as I am, I still think Deschutes' Obsidian Stout is superior. Now, how do you compare Obsidian to Total Domination? They are vastly different kinds of beer, brewed in different manners with different ingredients and consumed for different reasons in different ways.

Dammit, now I want a beer. What to choose, what to choose...

My favorite Brewery is probably New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins, CO. Most famous brew is Fat Tire if you aren't familiar with them. My personal favorite of theirs is Mothership Wit, a Belgian-Wit-ish beer supposedly made from all organic ingredients. I always try to try out the new offerings from New Belgium, but have fallen behind recently as they have upped their seasonal offerings lately. Missed the latest Winter one (Snow Day, I believe) and haven't checked out the new Spring one, which I think is called Dig.

Current favorite overall beer though is Milk Stout by Left Hand Brewing. Most unique stout I've ever had, and just insanely drinkable, regardless of season/weather.

COOP Ale works out of OKC. I love their DNR but I had a tasting of a beer they haven't released yet called the Farmhouse Ale, and I would never drink anything else after that.

Epic Brewery - It's a relatively new one in Utah, but holy hell they've got some good beer.

My personal favorite is the Hopulent IPA. I'm not sure how many are in their current line, but I like to try the new ones when I get the chance.

Stone Brewing Company's Ruination IPA. mmmmmmm Also, can't help but consume huge quantities of PBR, and any time I'm in Maryland, it's gotta be National Bohemian.

Cooper's, hands down (South Australian). They're all good but the sparkling ale is AMAZING, especially if you can find it on tap.

Just never make the mistake of not rolling the bottle. Dear God....

I'm going to sell out and not name a specific microbrew that you can only get in certain states, or have to mail order it, or suck off the brewer's dog to get.

St. James's Gate Brewer (i.e. Guinness). And I like just plain ole Guinness Draught.

And yes, there are plenty of good breweries around the world. But a good stout is just damn good.

I've always loved New Castle. But then I moved to Wisconsin and you can't swing a cat without hitting an original micro brew. Some are terrible, some a pretty good, some are excellent. America's popular lagers are objectively bad compared to "good" beer around the world, but we've got a hell of a lot of awesome micro breweries that could rival any region of the world.

There are just so many hundreds of different kinds of beer out there, it's impossible to pick a favorite.

Lately, I've put more consideration into my favorite kind of beer (brown ale) than my favorite company. There's just too much variety. I hate to sound like a beer snob, because I'm definitely not. I don't know nearly enough about beer to be a beer snob.

In summary, try reaching out and sampling craft beers you've never had. There's so much good stuff out there.

As an IPA drinker,

My daily drinker: Sierra Nevada Torpedo - Very available, decent flavor, pretty cheap.

Favorite strong IPA: Shipyard XXXX - Extremely well balanced, considering the ABV, haven't seen it available in bottle yet, only on tap at one bar.

Favorite expensive in bottle: Stone Ruination - Insanely Hoppy, but awesome flavor, INSANELY expensive.
