Larry the Cable Guy and Jeff Dunham. Seriously, stop. No one thinks you're funny.

[–]chaos_is_me 6 points7 points ago

David Cross has an excellent chapter in his book about Larry. I recommend a read. Actually, if you have a chance to listen to the audiobook it is fucking amazing.

[–]steegyn 2 points3 points ago

I don't have his book but here's what's on wikipedia

ALSO: Fucking love David Cross.

[–]coffinoff 1 point2 points ago

Part 1

Part 2

Awesome.

[–]thetasigma1355 9 points10 points ago

Larry the Cable Guy's humor relates to a specific group which is essentially rural americans. I can understand where most people not from a rural area wouldn't find him funny though. I consider him above-average but then, I can relate to some of the stuff he talks about. And yes, I know he is nothing like that in real life though I am worried that he now considers his "stage" life to be more real.

[–]John_Fx 3 points4 points ago

Larry is actually pretty funny. He just needs to get some new damn material.

[–]migraine_relief 1 point2 points ago

If i'm not mixing people up, it's actually interesting how intelligent Larry the Cable Guy is compared to what he attempts to portray on stage. If I remember correctly, the accent was developed over a fair amount of time to add to the persona. That said, I don't find him particularly funny since I think a lot of his style of humor is relational / 'you had to be there', kinda things.

[–]TheRandomRetard 57 points58 points ago

Jeff Dunham, Dane Cook, and Carlos Mencia

[–]gallbladder895 71 points72 points ago

TIL Carlos Mencia is a comedian.

[–]ThatGuyWithPants 7 points8 points ago

He got exposed by Joe Rogan a few years ago. Funniest thing was the video of both of them going up on stage confronting each other.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Speaking of Carlos Mencia, I saw him on some infomercial crap the other day. Poor bastard had it all. All he had to do was stop being lazy and make his own jokes and he would have been okay. Although some will argue that the only reason he got his own show was from the jokes he stole. I don't know if it's true or not, either way I didn't like him much.

[–]lowcomotion 24 points25 points ago

jeff dunham, god i cant stand him. he just uses those puppets because he cant set up his jokes properly by himself.

[–]tits_hemingway 3 points4 points ago

The one lyrics to describe Jeff Dunham is "I can say this and you laugh 'cause there's a puppet on my hand". I've seen his specials, and when he's doing stand-up sans the dolls it's painful to watch and he knows it. Also, holy shit he's got some racist bits.

[–]weiss5256 4 points5 points ago

Eminem - Ass Like That

[–]wslawson1 32 points33 points ago

Jeff. Dunham. Hate him.

[–]40kfreak 9 points10 points ago

Pretty much every comedian comedy central has given a show to in the last 5 years.

[–]zerton 5 points6 points ago

Does that include Chapelle or not? The years are going by. If it does, you're wrong.

[–]Confucius_says 5 points6 points ago

i think dave chapelle simply managed to get out on a high before he let himself be dragged down into shitdom. He played it quite smart. He'l always be remembered as awesome.

[–]finalcut19 3 points4 points ago

The Seinfeld route

[–]prances_with_pantses 1 point2 points ago

I fucking hate Jerry Seinfeld.

[–]40kfreak 4 points5 points ago

I think his show was older than 5 years...

[–]zerton 1 point2 points ago

Ok then I agree.

[–]QueenMyrrahh 103 points104 points ago

Dane Cook. He doesn't make me laugh

[–]andrewsmith1986 36 points37 points ago

I'll go against the grain here.

I think that he has a decent comedy album.

Yeah, it's cool to hate dane cook but there is much worse.

[–]patarack 10 points11 points ago

I agree. He may be a douche but I can't listen to a full set of his without absolutely losing it few times. I thought Isolated Incident was actually pretty damn funny.

[–]NeededANewName 17 points18 points ago

I thought he was pretty hilarious. His old comedy central stand-ups were golden. However, as he got really popular his jokes got repetitive and seemed to lack creativity. He has excellent delivery but as of late that seems to be all he relies on. Instead of clever jokes he just tells mediocre stories in a funny tone. This worked for a while but just doesn't interest me much anymore. I'll take clever content over delivery any day. Mitch Hedberg is a pretty good example I think of plain delivery but just awesomely clever content and I could listen to him all day.

[–]mrminty 5 points6 points ago

Mitch didn't quite have a plain delivery, his unique phrasing and elocution made it his own. If you retell one of his jokes without his stoner drawl behind it, they're pretty lacking, to be honest. I love the man and all of his albums, but a great deal of who he was as a comedian was based on his persona, which was communicated through his delivery. He seemed almost like a friend, not a guy who you would ask to be best man at your wedding, but you would call him up and go shoot the shit with him for a while.

There was a hidden brilliance behind many of his jokes that hints towards an intelligence lurking beneath the "burnout" facade, which is why I think his bits continuously stand up to the test of time. Of course it's hard not to say now that Mitch was a comedic genius, but I personally probably wouldn't have given his act the necessary multiple listens to really appreciate it had it not been the reinforcement of friends and others who already liked him.

As for Dane Cook, I feel like his explosion onto the pop comedy scene combined with the subsequent shunning by the comic community was what lead to the negative attitude so many people use about him now. He did a great interview with Marc Maron where he talks about how the Speak 'n' Spell bit catapulted him out of obscurity overnight and into selling out arenas across the country within the year. He's a tightly wound guy, as evidenced by his kinetic stage presence. I think the pressure of having to live up to his newfound reputation wore him a bit too thin, and that in turn lead many in the comedy world to deride him as he wasn't putting out similar quality material. He is a decent comic with real talent, I think he would have built up quite a following by now if he had ended up going a more traditional route.

tl;dr: Listening to multiple comedy podcasts at work every day has made me way more versed in comedy analysis than is probably healthy. I need help.

[–]Phoequinox 2 points3 points ago*

Totally true about Mitch. I try my damnedest to imitate his manner of speech when re-telling a joke, or it ceases to be funny.

[–]andrewsmith1986 12 points13 points ago

Check out Steven wright.

The original king of the one liner.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

You pretty much nailed it.

[–]chaos_is_me 1 point2 points ago

I think that his shtick just did him in. It was definitely fresh at the start, and I used to love him back in the day. After a couple years though the love faded, and it started becoming kind of annoying.

[–]aowens717 14 points15 points ago

The funniest Dane Cook Joke is: Dane: "When I was a kid I told them I wanted to be a comedian, they laughed. Well, no-one's laughing now."

[–]Brochoose 14 points15 points ago

Does he actually tell that joke? Because that's a reallllllly old joke. I think Barry Cryer even used to tell that joke on Jokers Wild....

[–]YoullThankMeLater 2 points3 points ago

Brave man.

[–]Confucius_says 2 points3 points ago

I think he's funny, just his targeted demographic is like 16 year olds.

[–]BW2K 37 points38 points ago

Whitney Cummings, fuck her and her dumb show.

[–]dontcallmewanda 4 points5 points ago

I wanted to like her, I thought she was funny at the roast of whoever, but that standup was waaaay too WOMEN ARE THIIIIIIIIS WAY. AND MEN ARE THIIIIIIIIIS WAY (STUPID).

[–]hattfatt 2 points3 points ago

Fuck her I would, listen to her? Not if I don't have to.

[–]faeriechyld 81 points82 points ago

JEFF DUNHAM. Also Daniel Tosh, all my friends love him but I just... don't see what's so funny.

[–]40kfreak 43 points44 points ago

HAHA GUYS ITS THE INTERNET

I have now saved you 4 seasons of tosh.0

[–]Lectril 31 points32 points ago

I'd like to think that any true Tosh fan would point you to his stand-up. Everyone knows his show is horrible.

[–]homeyG75 8 points9 points ago

Exactly. Most Tosh fans would recommend his stand-up. I've seen many on Reddit.

[–]spund[!] 7 points8 points ago

I went to go see him live in 2009, funniest fucking show I've been to. His standup surpasses his show tenfold.

[–]brewhouse 2 points3 points ago

Agreed, although some parts of his show can be good. His bit on Human Centipede is comedy gold!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I am so close to liking his stand up, but he laughs at his own jokes and it really irks me.

[–]hattfatt 2 points3 points ago

Apparently he's got some social anxiety going on and I guess his laughing is part of a coping mechanism. It also undermines the horribly offensive stuff he says and makes it even worse, which I like.

[–]Kinseyincanada 4 points5 points ago

I find this comment amusing on a site like reddit

[–]kekepulia 13 points14 points ago

Daniel Tosh, man!! Daniel fuckin' Tosh! His voice sounds too scripted for me to even find him funny. He needs to fix that shit.

[–]iShavedMyFaceForThis 9 points10 points ago

I saw him live long before the t.v. show thing. He's exactly the same on his delivery, but his humor has gotten a little more tasteful. No more fetus-burger jokes.

[–]MonitorMan 6 points7 points ago

which is saddening

[–]abijnk 2 points3 points ago

Tosh is fantastic in person, but I can't stand his show and have a hard time with his big-room specials.

[–]zach2093 2 points3 points ago

Watch his old stand up before he became popular. It is some of my favourite stand up ever.

[–]hurstlogan 1 point2 points ago

Agreed on both accounts. I think what catches most people is the fact that he toes the line on a lot of issues typically considered taboo.

It's like his schtick is "OH CHECK IT OUT IM MAKING REALLY RAUNCHY GAY JOKES WITH BITING SARCASM AND FUNNY".

I'm over it. Cheers to those who enjoy it, though.

[–]eldog 3 points4 points ago

I like Tosh's stand up, but that fucking tosh.0 shit needs to stop.

[–]Jackbonjour 7 points8 points ago

Ray William Johnson. He's just not funny at all.

[–]ADPowers001 14 points15 points ago

lets not give him the honor of referring to him as a comedian

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

He's not, he takes funny bits and ruins them for us.

[–]russianout 27 points28 points ago

Andy Dick. Not really a comedian anyway.

[–]Dr_fish 5 points6 points ago

He sure lives up to his last name.

Especially this part.

On July 17, 2007, at the Laugh Factory comedy club in Los Angeles, Dick was in an altercation with his former NewsRadio co-star Jon Lovitz, who claimed that, a year earlier, Dick had approached Lovitz at a restaurant and said, "I put the Phil Hartman hex on you; you're the next one to die," and demanded an apology from Dick. Lovitz has accused Dick of re-introducing Hartman's wife to cocaine, who had a relapse, killed Hartman while he slept in his Encino, California home, and then shot herself.[45] When Lovitz joined the cast of NewsRadio as Hartman's replacement in its fifth and final season, he told Dick: "I wouldn't be here now if you hadn't given Brynn that cocaine."[46]

[–]Voduar 5 points6 points ago

Yes, while I agree with your dislike, I feel it is a stretch calling him a comedian. Shatner feels like more of a comedian.

[–]AskMeAboutMyScrotum 3 points4 points ago

A buddy of mine is a manager at a local comedy club.

They had Andy Dick there to perform one weekend, and the saturday night show was cancelled because he Mr. Dick had

  • gotten drunk,
  • locked himself and some male stripper in the manager's office,
  • spent an hour counting money stolen from the club,
  • sniffed cocaine off the desk,
  • and had sex with the aforementioned guy on the manager's desk.

Edit- Andy dick's not allowed in any Fat Fish Blue/Funnybone locations anymore.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Andy Dickface needs to die.

[–]shazzyzam 35 points36 points ago

Chelsea Handler has not ever made me laugh. Ever.

[–]GameLoser93 4 points5 points ago

I disagree, I can see how she can get annoying though.

[–]Monicabyte 49 points50 points ago

I absolutely loathe George Lopez.

[–]newtothelyte 4 points5 points ago

Among the Spanish-speaking community he is really popular, obviously. Not that many good Spanish comedians these days.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

George Lopez is alright compared to others. I don't think he's all that great, but I wouldn't go as far as saying I loathe the guy. Just my opinion though. Curious, why do you hate him?

[–]homeyG75 4 points5 points ago

I don't remember people thinking he was funny in the first place.

[–]UnfoundHero 7 points8 points ago

The TV show was pretty good.

[–]homeyG75 11 points12 points ago*

"That show only furthers the stereotype that George Lopez is funny." -Chris Griffin from Family Guy

[–]Confucius_says 1 point2 points ago

I think he has the essence of funny. But his jokes aren't really relevant to anyone whose family isn't identical to his. He keeps making jokes about family members but never explains who they are or what theyre like so you can't get in to the jokes.

[–]Cptn_Janeway 14 points15 points ago

ITT the usual Reddit circlejerk.

[–]raskolnikov- 1 point2 points ago

HEY, WHAT DOES "OVERRATED" MEAN GUYS LOL?

LET'S LIST CRAPPY COMEDIANS!

[–]John_Fx 5 points6 points ago

Jeff Dunham, George Lopez, Frank Calliendo, Carlos Mencia.

[–]yyx9 1 point2 points ago

Frank Calliendo was forced to take on the Sisyphean ordeal of trying to replace Will Sasso on Mad TV. I'm shocked by how underutilized someone of such talent and hilarity (Sasso) was and to this day I can't tie his name with anything other than Beverly Hills Ninja and the beginning of Sum 41 - Still Waiting.

[–]godafrid 10 points11 points ago

Came here to say Dane Cook. Quite a few people beat me to it.

[–]mustardontoast 12 points13 points ago

Most comedians are overrated. It's a tough job

[–]iamrory 1 point2 points ago

Just reading the answers here is enough to make any aspiring comedians think twice. You don't see too many nuanced or middle of the road opinions. Even if you made someone laugh five minutes (or seconds) ago, there's still a decent chance that they think you're a hack or total garbage.

They talk briefly about being judged on the HBO documentary Talking Funny, which I would highly recommended to any fans of comedy. It used to be on youtube but it looks like they took the full version down. It's definitely a rough job.

[–]DarthContinent 18 points19 points ago

Dane Cook.

[–]aowens717 21 points22 points ago

Katt Williams

[–]Liz_Asher 7 points8 points ago

I can't stand Katt Williams. Especially when they air it on Comedy Central. All I hear is a loud censor bleep ever other word, and I can't understand what the hell he is saying.

[–]KALASH69 3 points4 points ago

I cannot fucking stand this idiot.

[–]dontcallmewanda 1 point2 points ago

UGH. This guy is the worst. I don't understand who is buying all these fucking records he sells, he sucks.

[–]Yorkb 5 points6 points ago

Tom Green. Just an idiot.

[–]bendemolina 5 points6 points ago

I feel SO HORRIBLE for saying this, but I don't like a pretty big chunk of George Carlin's standup. I mean, I completely understand why he's important and significant, and I really do love his writing, but his standup I could never get into. It's really weird.

[–]cool_hand_luke 3 points4 points ago

Jerry Seinfeld

[–]pr0crastinate 1 point2 points ago

Him and leno. Probably the richest but least funny for me. For as cool a dude as Saget appears to be, his stand up blows hard. Was good in the Aristocrats thouh.

[–]Juniper123 3 points4 points ago

Jack Black, he's a shitty actor and doesn't deserve any kind of praise, admiration or money for the way he behaves.

[–]nsaman6359 4 points5 points ago

Louis CK

[–]Horrours_of_Secks 10 points11 points ago

We've forgotten the meaning of "overrated". Dane Cook is not overrated. You and I think he blows a fat choad, but almost no critics or intelligent people disagree.

[–]bibliofille 26 points27 points ago

100% agree with you about Sarah Silverman.

I maybe just haven't been exposed to many good ones, but I generally don't find female comedians funny (I am a woman). It's like they're trying SO HARD to be outrageous (period jokes, ew), or 'one of the guys' (FARTS! haha!). Not funny to me.

[–]yyx9 11 points12 points ago

Maria Bamford makes me tear up and red in the face in such a good way. "Cutting out pictures from O magazine that resonate with me."

[–]Liz_Asher 2 points3 points ago

Maria Bamford was the first comedian I ever saw on Comedy Central Presents, and she made me cry I laughed so hard.

[–]positive_anarchy 11 points12 points ago

Kirsten Schaal. She's wonderful. :) But I agree...too often, the women that get the limelight...Silverman, Handler...they do so by being vulgar, nasty. Not that women can't do that sort of humor. But they aren't creative with it. Saying turd in a cute voice over and over is trying too hard.

[–]bibliofille 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for the suggestion, I will check her out!

[–]Jeff_Drake 7 points8 points ago*

I fuckin' love Silverman. I'm a sucker for a good deadpan delivery style. You have to appreciate dry humor to enjoy it, really.

I generally don't find female comedians funny

Tina Fey? Amy Poehler? Margaret Cho? Tig Notaro?

[–]Starslip 7 points8 points ago

One of the few I enjoyed was Ellen DeGeneres when she was still doing standup, though to be fair all her bits were pretty gender neutral.

[–]escape_velocity 1 point2 points ago

i get what you're saying. i always enjoy small-time female comedians at live shows. they have a lot of clever material and don't really go into the period jokes (probably because the audience is always 95% male most nights and it goes whoosh).

[–]unfknreal 22 points23 points ago

Kathy Griffin and of course Dane Cook

[–]newtothelyte 1 point2 points ago

I never in my life will understand how Kathy Griffin is funny. I do think she's kinda hot though.

[–]Fletch71011 10 points11 points ago

Ok, everyone has said Dunham, Dane Cook, Larry the Cable Guy, and Tosh, like they don't get hated on all the time here at Reddit already... so it's hard to rate them very highly. As for me, I cannot or just do not get Jerry Seinfeld, and this goes for his show as well. It just doesn't do anything for me.

[–]floppy_camel_anus 4 points5 points ago

I agree with you man, I find his humor really dim and slow. That makes me sound pretentious as fuck. I'm sorry.

[–]Aleksander73 10 points11 points ago

Jeff Dunham. If you think he is funny, I don't want to be friends with you.

[–]phone_scissors_pen 24 points25 points ago

On Reddit: Louis C.K.

Again, this is not a popular opinion, but honestly there's a reason Dane Cook stole from him: he knew their jokes and styles were similar enough to where you could consider them interchangeable. I like Louis C.K. fine, but he is not as great as Reddit has anointed him.

[–]Tyrannosauruswrex 5 points6 points ago

Aw man I know. I've watched his shows a few times and maybe chuckled once or twice, but never really found the appeal of it.

[–]That_Other_Person 5 points6 points ago

Carlos Mencia

[–]Lemlems 2 points3 points ago

I don't know if this has already been said but Russel Peters. It was funny for the first while and now it just feels like the same old comedy routine.

[–]sheffers 2 points3 points ago

Lee Evans

Michael McIntyre

Matt Lucas + David Williams

It's what I like to call, comedy for stupid people. There's more but it's neary 7am and I'm drunk/tired.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

It's what I like to call, comedy for stupid people.

That's convenient. They're all incredibly popular, but you don't like them. This must mean that everyone else is stupid. That's the only possible reason that you can see.

[–]SilentScarlet 1 point2 points ago

Me too about Lee Evans. HAHA, IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE HE'S SWEARING

[–]AWizardDidIt 1 point2 points ago

And he's running around! Look how sweaty he is! Hahahahahahaha!!

[–]beginpanicsequence 2 points3 points ago

David koresh, because he isn't very funny

[–]Clearly_a_fake_name 2 points3 points ago

  1. Lee Fucking Evans
  2. Al Fucking Murray

[–]GalacticNexus 2 points3 points ago

TIL I don't know who any American comedians are.

[–]cwaiggie 2 points3 points ago

Sandra Bernhard and Kathy Griffin - OMG really? GTFO

[–]United99 9 points10 points ago

All of the red-neck tour people I just find awful. Also, Jeff Dunham is so bad it hurts my head.

[–]sotech 13 points14 points ago

Ron White is pretty fucking hilarious actually. Check him out on spotify or netflix.

[–]GerniePain 14 points15 points ago

Zach Galifianakis... I just dont laugh, maybe too dry for me

[–]Alt_ 1 point2 points ago

Funniest thing I have ever seen him in I just love his reactions to the insults.

[–]Confucius_says 1 point2 points ago

He has some moments of funny. but I wouldn't be able to watch a whole special of him.

[–]bpkrillen 4 points5 points ago

Rodney Rude and Kevin Blood Wilson. These are aussie comedians which find crude humor to work for them. Meh i dont find those jokes funny.

[–]atrocious13 5 points6 points ago

Larry the cable guy, can't stand that guy

[–]herpette 4 points5 points ago

Russell Peters was funny the first time around, but I had to stop watching the Green Card Tour 10 minutes in. Same old, same old.

[–]nebula27 4 points5 points ago

Probably gonna get down voted to hell for this but Louis C.K. I understand that some of his jokes are mildly funny but still overrated. Sorry.

[–]happenedagain 1 point2 points ago

so brave

[–]anon120 7 points8 points ago

Fuckin' DANE COOK.

[–]G1ng3rPaul 20 points21 points ago

Russell fucking Brand - He's just a twat, pure and simple

Actually, Noel Fielding as well - he infuriates me, wierdo

[–]onlineidentity 34 points35 points ago

Beg to differ. Russell Brand is one of the most incredibly articulate comedians out there. Just listen to any of his interviews or stand up and listen to the eloquent language he uses. He forms sentences on the spot that I could not form with a dictionary and a day to think.

[–]G1ng3rPaul 2 points3 points ago

I myself, when I wish to can construct very articulate and beautifully flowing sentences, yet I am no a comedian. Furthermore, the manner in which he delivers these "jokes" i.e. going waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too far with elongating a word/syllable whilst spiking the pitch of his delivery and thickening up the accent for a second or two... just gets on my tits tbh

[–]Teekoo 13 points14 points ago

but he's not funny.

[–]TheSpeedy 4 points5 points ago

Right. A good vocabulary doesn't make up for him not being very funny. I guess that and a British accent are enough to impress most people.

[–]chimpychimp 1 point2 points ago

He also has a particular manner of speech, im not sure whether its enunciation or not, but everything he says is totally wrong. Its hard to describe, but its like he places massive emphasis on the wrong parts of a sentence, and its incredible annoying to listen to.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I didn't really think Noel Fielding was rated high enough to be considered overrated to begin with. Most of the people I know have never even heard of him. But I do think he's pretty funny, though.

Russell Brand, however, is okay in my opinion.

[–]ApatheticElephant 1 point2 points ago

I love Noel Fielding but yeah, Russel Brand annoys me. I watched the TV show he had for a little while, where he basically commented on youtube videos for half an hour. It seemed to be like he was trying to bombard me with jokes until I laughed, which I don't like.

[–]G1ng3rPaul 1 point2 points ago

I don't like fielding purely because he just seems to want to rub his strangeness in everyone's face like "oooh look at meeee, I'm the guy from the awful TV show that people somehow found funny.... here's a song about soup" ಠ_ಠ

[–]Inebano 1 point2 points ago

This. A million times this. I loathe Russell Brand, I don't understand how anyone could find him even remotely amusing.

[–]dylanausing 4 points5 points ago

Fucking Dane Cook.

[–]jackya 3 points4 points ago

Carlos Mencia. I cannot stand him

[–]motown_missile 3 points4 points ago

Dane Cook and David Cross and Kevin James and George Lopez have never ever made me laugh. Also the "You might be a redneck guy" and the "they call me Tater Salad" guy just don't do it for me, either.

[–]yyx9 2 points3 points ago

Maybe not David Cross' standup but have you seen some of the situations him and Bob Odenkirk put themselves in on Mr. Show?

[–]GeneralTry 2 points3 points ago

Brian Regan... not funny.

[–]nateaff 1 point2 points ago

THANK YOU

[–]Liz_Asher 1 point2 points ago

I love Brian Regan, but his bits I saw on Comedy Central made me hate him. My ex made me watch his stand up on Netflix and I laughed so hard. But yeah, I can see why someone wouldn't like him though. He does waaay too many 'retard' like voices in my opinion.

[–]Tufty89 2 points3 points ago

Ooooh boy. I'm gonna eat it for this one, but....I really don't care for George Carlin.

It gets worse. I also don't really like Bill Hicks.

[–]gallbladder895 5 points6 points ago

I came here to say Sarah Silverman, but nice work OP!

[–]andrewsmith1986 20 points21 points ago

Jimmy Fallon.

Not fucking funny at all.

[–]Ranger33 6 points7 points ago

I saw him do live stand-up and it was hilarious. Much better than on TV.

[–]zoso33 3 points4 points ago

Also agree.

He really pisses me off when he's laughing at his own joke halfway through it

[–]Raiancap 10 points11 points ago

Lewis Black.

[–]Nebakanezzer 4 points5 points ago

almost everyone in this thread will be people who arnt overrated.

carlos mencia is not overated. people liked him, then he caught a bad rap for stealing jokes, everyone roasted him, now hes irrelevant. dane cook had a strong couple of years, then everyone made fun of his style of comedy now it's not cool to dig his shit anymore. that's not overrated, that's being a has-been because the mainstream is fickle.

you wanna know what is actually overrated? Seinfeld. show went out with a bang, had a ton of "good" seasons, and is heralded for it's awesome writing and style, yet has never made me laugh. I can't get into it, and i LOVE comedy. I like everything from zoolander and louis ck (which seems to be popular opinion here) to shit people hate like sarah silverman and will farrel. I can appreciate well written, witty dialogue and situational humor, or crude dead baby jokes, but Seinfeld falls flat with me. i dont get how it can be one of the greatest comedy series in television and i cant get anything out of it.

[–]fuzzywork 1 point2 points ago

Came here to say this myself. I could not agree more. I like both Cook and Mencia. A few others you could add to the list would be Jeff Dunham(has a wonderful talent) and Larry the Cable guy(a more rural/southern type comedian).

[–]raskolnikov- 1 point2 points ago

I think you misunderstood the poster above. Mencia isn't OVERRATED; rather, he is generally reviled. That's different. He's not saying he's good...

[–]raskolnikov- 1 point2 points ago

Finally someone who can read English and knows what "overrated" means posted in this thread.

That's the problem with aggregation sites like reddit and questions like these. The least controversial answers tend to rise to the top, but they're less on topic by default.

Anyway, if I were to respond to this topic, I'd say George Carlin is overrated. Swearing a lot and making banal observations about culture that appeal to disillusioned 16 year olds isn't my idea of comedy. His bits just weren't funny. And he wasn't that groundbreaking, either. A relaxation of FCC censorship of TV was inevitable with or without Carlin's take on the matter.

I loved Seinfeld (the show). But I appreciate your on topic response. I haven't been really impressed with Seinfeld (the man, minus Larry David) since the show ended.

"What's next, the flapping dickey?"

[–]TheUnknownAsian 1 point2 points ago

this may have been said before, but. Jeff Dunham. sure, I may have found the first show he did with Achmed the dead terrorist. but after the first time watching it, lost all interest.

[–]cool_crip11 1 point2 points ago

Carlos Mencia.., I just typed only his name and this is how google finished my sentence: "carlos mencia steals jokes" even google hates this guy.

Richard Lewis. Seriously tedious and not the least bit funny. (I've been doing his act for years and people just tell me to shut the fuck up and stop whining.)

Also agree with OP on Sarah Silverman. I think she's cute, but her act is a fucking bore.

Also can't stand Rita Rudner.

[–]ApatheticElephant 1 point2 points ago

I have to be honest, I find very few American comedians do anything for me. I'm yet to find a stand-up american comic whom I like, and there are few American comedy actors who actually make me laugh. I'm not a huge fan of most of the American comedies redditors seem to like. Community is pretty average and I find Arrested Development a bit over-the-top. I usually watch UK/Australian comedians.

Having said that, I'll pick out one non-American comedian: There's something that's always annoyed me about Ricky Gervais. I can't put my finger on it, and it doesn't stop me from watching his shows, but I get frustrated whenever I see him.

[–]fishnetdiver 1 point2 points ago

Leno, Jimmy Fallon, George Lopez and Dane Cook.

[–]resistedsuicide 1 point2 points ago

The =3 dude on youtube.

[–]Southpoles 1 point2 points ago

Gabriel Iglesias and Jeff Dunham

[–]anorexia_is_PHAT 1 point2 points ago

Ricky Gervais. I love TV, radio, and podcast work, but his stand-up doesn't do it for me.

[–]tuff_gong 1 point2 points ago

Ralph Nader. I just don't see it.

[–]ChoadFarmer 16 points17 points ago

Bill Hicks. He's only 'thoughtful' and 'deep' if you're 15 and just found out that the world sucks.

[–]chaos_is_me 4 points5 points ago

I still haven't got in to him. I hear really good things, but it doesn't even seem like comedy, and I'm not very entertained by it.

[–]goodbetterbestbested 10 points11 points ago

He's also quite good to watch when you're 35 and have just realized that your 15-year-old misanthropy wasn't entirely off the mark.

[–]newbizguy 9 points10 points ago

Sacrilege!!

[–]Mushroomer 3 points4 points ago

Same here. I watched "American" the documentary about his life - and while he had some genuinely clever bits early on, the final special they showed off was just full of whining. Absolutely intolerable.

[–]InferiousX 5 points6 points ago

Was going to post the same thing. I don't get it. It's like George Carlin if he screamed a lot more and minus the wit.

[–]ataripixel 2 points3 points ago

I saw this title and thought, "This will be known as the Daniel Tosh thread."

[–]steegyn 5 points6 points ago

Sarah Silverman and Demetri Martin are usually a hit-or-miss for me.

[–]Allumina 4 points5 points ago

Margaret Cho makes me see red.

[–]yyx9 6 points7 points ago

i saw her doing an interview that had to have been shot in the last 2 years. The premise of the show was what makes comedians funny. She was spewing this bullshit about her early life and how she got into comedy, and how people who haven't been discovered yet need to keep trying. She came off as a bloated concubine that radiated extremely shallow and lackluster motivations. I wanted to step into the television and kick her in her fucking mouth. I didn't though.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I agree. She is just awful.

Except for when she does impersonations of her mother, but even then it's only kinda funny.

[–]ILikeBumblebees 2 points3 points ago

She's Korean, not Chinese.

[–]taozero 9 points10 points ago

Carlin

Early material was genius, later stuff became self righteous and preachy

[–]Lyme 16 points17 points ago

100% agreed. After a certain point, it feels like I'm listening to a crotchety old grandpa complaining at me about everything that's wrong with the world. I think he got too bitter in his last 10-15 years to be funny.

[–]YoullThankMeLater 4 points5 points ago

I thought some of his stuff was genius too early on but I watched one stand-up on Netflix where he just bashed on religion for the entire 50 minutes or whatever. It doesn't bug me a bit that he was making fun of religion, but you can only talk about a certain topic for so long before it just becomes repetitive.

[–]TopHattedGentleman 3 points4 points ago

This, all the way.

In his last few shows, he just sounds like an angry old man who hates not getting his way.

[–]ChoadFarmer 8 points9 points ago

He has some good bits and quotes, but actually sitting through a 1 hour show isn't easy.

[–]pitosamigos 2 points3 points ago

I don't find him laugh out loud funny most of the time, but I still think he is good to listen to, and he makes me crack a smile a lot. It is definitely a different approach, but I still think he was always great.

[–]JAF2 8 points9 points ago

NOT Louis C.K.

[–]sunsunsun 9 points10 points ago

I consider him to be overrated not because he's a terrible comedian but because he's an above average comedian who is treated like the second coming of Jesus by the exact same people that are commenting that Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia and Jeff Dunham are overrated. His perpetual existential crisis shtick gets on my nerves.

[–]Confucius_says 1 point2 points ago

hes not overated, but hes not the best. He doesn't deserve a nomination of being a "not" in this thread.

[–]Teekoo 0 points1 point ago

His last show wasn't that funny.

[–]steegyn 1 point2 points ago

I agree, the web special wasn't the best.

[–]windy444 2 points3 points ago

YES Louis C.K.

[–]jeremyjack33 4 points5 points ago

Most political comedians(lewis black/janeane garofalo/bill maher/george carlins later stuff).

I do not give a shit about your political opinions. Jokes or GTFO.

[–]violetjoker 1 point2 points ago

Thinking makes my head hurt too.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

I hate Demetri Martin. Hate.

[–]JAsherP 24 points25 points ago

Noooooooo!

[–]kekepulia 4 points5 points ago

Is he acting now? When I saw him in Contagion I was baffled. I died of laughter at the ridiculousness of it. Interesting how the time he made me laugh the hardest was when he was trying to be serious...

[–]tegaychik 1 point2 points ago

I love him. Leave him alone.

[–]mlikweblue 5 points6 points ago

Louis C.K.

ducks

[–]notaboutlove 3 points4 points ago

Jenna Freaking Marbles. I can't even deal. Anyone can hold up their dog and talk in a funny voice. She's not impressive.

[–]deadaim86 6 points7 points ago

I wouldn't classify her as a comedian. She's more of an "entertainer," if anything. More specifically, she's just a youtube commentator. I find her more entertaining than any of the other youtube "stars."

[–]Osiris32 2 points3 points ago

Wow, went through this whole thread and not a single mention of:

WILL FERREL

No, he's just not funny. He pushes punchlines way too hard, has three facial expressions (confused, angry confused, and pained) and doesn't have great comedic timing. His physical comedy doest come off well, either, I think he ends up looking like an awkward newbie trying to be good instead of a veteran comic trying to look awkward. The only times I've enjoyed him are when he's playing the straightman and others are being funny, Alex Trebek on SNL and the IRS agent in Stranger Than Fiction are prime examples.

[–]guamaniantreerunner 1 point2 points ago

I feel like the only reason people find her so shocking/funny is because she's a she. If she were a dude, she would be nothing more than a radio shock jock.

[–]Voduar 2 points3 points ago

A cute she. Roseanne could do all that and we'd barely notice.
