My 2 cents: Having worked in media/advertising agencies, this was clearly some douche in the marketing/PR team trying to push awareness of this film through 'social media channels' (yukk!)

Most brands I've worked with follow a very ill-informed approach to promote their shit online. Spray a bunch of PR stories about your brand/product to get exposure on whatever is the latest platform people are spending their most time on. (Facebook, Reddit etc) That is probably what happened here.

What they didn't expect is a question about Woody banging some 17 year old. They should have just ignored the question and moved on. But whoever it was responding for Woody, decided to get obnoxious about it, gave that 'story' more credibility and here we are.

I hate this stupid trend of 'social media marketing' (sic) coz very few companies/people get it right. Even then, it mostly involves stroking the massive collective ego of the internet - akin "I would like to thank my 'fans' speeches. i.e. pandering b.s. Consequently, if you don't pander to the hive mind, you create lynch mobs...like this.

Does Woody and everyone else involved in making the film deserve to be boycotted coz of some dumb shit like this? Probably not. But it will happen.

I'm still a Woody fan, he probably came in uninformed thinking it was going to be solely about promoting his new movie, then the first thing he see's are questions about him banging a high school chick and his lunatic estranged father.
