Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, and AVG. They're all free and work very well.

[–]pointmanzero 9 points10 points ago

BUT NOT ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Running multiple anti-virus software messes them up. MSE is free and excellent.

AVG is pretty meh these days, very bloated, can hog system resources, and loves to find conflicts with other programs. I'd agree with the other two. AVG's detection is not significantly better (or worse) to justify the large performance hit imo.

Does it detect and remove Digital Restrictions Malware?

[–]Votesareno 0 points1 point ago

NO NO NO on AVG, reason: read the EULA

[–]adomental 1 point2 points ago

TL;DR, do you want to tell us which parts you object to?

[–]linkmh 5 points6 points ago

I've heard many people say that Microsoft Security Essentials is basically all you need if you have Windows and are not a complete fucktard when it comes to viruses(as in surfing suspect websites).

I personally use Avira, but Avast works as well, read some specs on both of them and you'll find what you need.

If you have a laptop, I would recommend not using AVG because it is quite...slow I would say. It may work for most people for their desktop but I stopped using it.

lots of "free 3d screensavers" as well as toolbars, lots and lots of toolbars

Avast or MSE.

Norton has gotten better, but it is still a dire piece of software.

What operating system are you running?

[–]thersx2[S] 1 point2 points ago

Windows 7.

[–]vertexvortex 1 point2 points ago

Thank you.

Microsoft Forefront; Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

[–]thndrchld 0 points1 point ago

Used to be a BIG fan of AVG, then they went to crap. I recommend ESET now. Much better, and about the same price as (the real version, not the shitty free version) AVG.

And yes, the free version of AVG is shit. The paid software used to be awesome, but they went down the crapper the last version or two.

Comodo is an excellent firewall. Never any problems, and I do not even have antivirus.

another vote for eset. their suite is fine, it's what i use on my personal windows machines. to save some coin, you could get the eset antivirus (if it's still sold standalone), and use a free firewall solution like comodo, zone alarm, whatever (google). eset's tools are typically fast, lightweight, and do their jobs very well.

if you use windows: microsoft security essentials.

[–]Votesareno -2 points-1 points ago

Let MS decide what's bad? I think not.

[–]ViniTheHat 1 point2 points ago

suit yourself, its a solid product.

[–]Laser_Stronghold 1 point2 points ago

MS SE is great. You don't need some bloated software like McAfee or Norton. MS SE light, free and gives great protection... that and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware as an on demand scanner

[–]Votesareno 0 points1 point ago

Lol, mcafee? Who the hell still uses that? And norton of course was exposed as having spy backdoors for the 'security services', and is generally a POS anyway.

[–]IamAhamsterAMA -1 points0 points ago

AVG

[–]YOU_ARE_REPOST 1 point2 points ago

In my experience, AVG will catch almost everything, but can slow down your PC immensely. Not always the case, but just from my experience.

[–]mostoriginalusername 0 points1 point ago

AVG is terrible with system resources and we have had multiple machines come in for service where the problem specifically was AVG. Course, like 75% of machines with norton on them that have a network problem, norton is the problem, so...

[–]IamAhamsterAMA 0 points1 point ago

I dunno what to say. I've used it for years and my computer has never been bogged down. I suppose it all depends on the machine and how the user customizes it.

[–]too_many_bats 0 points1 point ago

AVG was good until a year ago. Now it'll bog you down terribly. It can be good to use for the occasional scan but MSSE is way better IMO for daily protection.

[–]Votesareno 0 points1 point ago

You don't read EULA's then.

[–]pointmanzero 0 points1 point ago

you sneaky son of a bitch, thats a virus.

[–]Ging287 -1 points0 points ago

It's binary, and translates to "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware".

[–]A_for_Anonymous -1 points0 points ago

In what encoding?

[–]pointmanzero 1 point2 points ago

ಠ_ಠ

[–]A_for_Anonymous 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Encoding. Binary data has to be encoded in some way to represent characters.

[–]pointmanzero 0 points1 point ago

I agree with you...I just think this is pointless

[–]A_for_Anonymous 0 points1 point ago

True. I was just being pedant.

[–]A_for_Anonymous 0 points1 point ago

Kaspersky.

[–]SlashMatrix 0 points1 point ago

THIS. Kaspersky solved some major viral issues I had that even survived a full reset to factory conditions!

[–]mostoriginalusername 0 points1 point ago

Kaspersky, while historically having the best and latest virus protection and removal, does use some system resources and does sometimes cause conflicts with other applications. Also, it's the most expensive personal anti-virus software on the market. I do recommend it, but if you want something free and very good, I recommend Avast.

[–]timothytandem -1 points0 points ago

McAfee Antivirus

It'll never go away
