Futurama did a great one-two punch to the "standing right behind me" one in the episode "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back".

Bender: "Uh oh, she's standing right behind me, isn't she?"

Morgan: "No, I'm in front of you."

pans right to show her in front of him

[–]keghiaguy 111 points112 points ago

That scene was made all the more hilarious by the resulting squeal from Bender.

[–]athennna 847 points848 points ago

Whatever situation/shenanigan that causes huge problems for the main character, but could be solved easily if he/she explained what happened. Instead, there's another 90 minutes of bad decisions before they finally tell the truth and the problem goes away.

[–]anthozan 246 points247 points ago

YES! It's so unbearable watching the a whole god damn film while screaming in your head "JUST TELL THE FUCKING TRUTH! JUST TELL THE FUCKING TRUTH!".

Smart, sassy wife who seems to run the household paired with an overweight, semi-retarded husband who only seems to want to watch the big game or hang out with the boys but can't because he fucked up and has to make it up to wifey.

[–]jaytrade21 467 points468 points ago

This was funny though, due to the context of the movie it worked as everything was just batshit crazy.

[–]Wolfram161 295 points296 points ago

Also, because she did it in a way that suggested it was practiced and felt natural for her to speak in that way, which increased the absurdity, instead of forcing something that seems obviously unnatural, which leads to forced awkwardness in the guise of humor.

Also because it was fucking Florence fucking Henderson.

The big football game (no mention of teams) is on but the wife says the husband has to go to a wedding/childs birthday party/etc. The husband tries to get out of it but fails, and ends up watching part of it with a portable tv/radio, then screams out a reaction to the game at an inopportune time.

Simpsons did it

[–]LLv2 78 points79 points ago

They also sync'd the words of the announcer (in Homer's headphones) with Reverend Lovejoy's mouth movements. They did it so well it was almost fresh.

[–]DoctorDeath 1634 points1635 points ago

So... all of Tyler Perry's movies?

[–]redditfromwork 491 points492 points ago

I tried to watch a Tyler Perry movie once, thinking it would be so terrible it would be hilarious. Turns out it was not so much funny, but extremely preachy.

[–]Repyro 403 points404 points ago*

I watched the "Family that preys" because my gf at the time dragged me into that theater. It was one of the shittiest, cliched, unoriginal films I had ever had the displeasure of seeing. They used the same "cheating wife", "corporate successor", "I have Alzheimer's and now I want to see the world" bullshit that has plagued the movie industry for decades now.

They basically just did it with black characters thrown into the mix. Shitty movies blackified, just like BET. Fuck, I'm black and I hate that shit in other movies, what the fuck would replacing or adding black characters and stereotypes, add to that horrendous movie making concept. I hate Tyler Perry.

Now that I'm done ranting, I need to watch some of Christopher Nolan to make up for bringing Tyler Perry up.

[–]Waldo_Jeffers 238 points239 points ago

Dude. See the Boondocks episode "Pause." They rip Tyler Perry to little pieces.

[–]firebadmattgood 35 points36 points ago

His movies always struck me as offensive minstrel shows (credit for that description to Spike Lee). I mean, I get the fact that I as a middle class white dude am not his target audience, but he's got the resources available to him at this point to be making and successfully marketing accessible "Black" movies like How I Spent my Summer Vacation (1997 one, not the Mel Gibson one). Instead he's making movies where a matriarch solves problems by beating children and having come to Jesus talks. What the fuck?

[–]p4nda 1746 points1747 points ago

Perfectly normal / actually attractive protagonist portrayed as too nerdy / too ugly for love, ultimately fixing hair and/or removing glasses and pairing up with co-star.

[–]Lazar_Taxon 1039 points1040 points ago

TVTropes calls this "Hollywood homely" (I'll spare the link).

[–]Trobot087 47 points48 points ago

In Hollywood, there are only inhumanely attractive girls, and moderately attractive girls with glasses. Also, the fat girl there for the fat girl jokes.

The Bumbling Dad trope.

[–]MisterAlways 62 points63 points ago

I make only one exception, and that's Hal from Malcolm In The Middle.

Yes no, maybe, I don't know...

[–]scourge_of_carpathia[S] 898 points899 points ago

Protagonist fumbles through the entire plot of the movie. He makes every mis-step possible with ever character he interacts with and situation he finds himself in. Rather than actually showing the other character(s) how he is a better person, he gives a long heartwarming speech at the wedding/board meeting/party/product launch/dinner that manages to change everyone's opinion of him.

Guy proceeds to mention how he'll kick so-and-so's ass when he meets him. Turns out so-and-so is built like a line-backer. Protagonist throws one pathetic punch.

Scene cuts to protagonist with cuts and bruises all over his face sitting on the floor of his apartment leaning against the wall with an ice pack on his hand.

[–]TheFarceUnleashed 440 points441 points ago

Girl walks in.

"you should see the other guy"

Canned laughter

And scene

[–]iglidante 1309 points1310 points ago

The hilariously misinterpreted scene that drives the entire angst-ridden plot. For example, imagine a series of events that leads to a girl walking in on her boyfriend in a manner such that it appears he is masturbating to pictures of her grandmother.

[–]caprican27 1021 points1022 points ago

What's worse is when a romantic comedy film does this. Husband's hot secretary accidentally falls on husband sitting in chair, then the wife walks in. 90 minutes of shitty punchlines, misunderstandings and the inevitable reconciliation for something that could have been cleared up in a minute

[–]genital_furbies 567 points568 points ago

It makes me wonder about the trust the characters have in one another. One little, misinterpreted act, and the wife/girlfriend/etc. is ready to throw the relationship out the window?

[–]WolfInTheField 307 points308 points ago

This is so often the case! Really, if you look at it, 90% of sitcom/romcom conflicts are little bitchfits that could be resolved in .5 seconds if even one of the characters in question would have a flash of maturity, drop the neurotic bullcrap and get the Fuck over it.

[–]discidius 324 points325 points ago

I like that you said "bullcrap" and "fuck" in the same sentence. Ya gosh-darned cunt.

[–]Tibyon 515 points516 points ago

Yup. If it were a good show, the scene would go like this.

  • Hot secretary falls in lap.
  • Wife walks in, says something like, "RICHARD! What are you doing?"
  • Richard: "She just fell."
  • Wife: "I don't believe you."
  • Richard: "I'm telling the truth, but frankly I'm deeply angry that you aren't willing to take my word on this. I'm tired of you always making assumptions and trying to catch me in compromising situations! Fuck you." Makes out with secretary

[–]t3yrn 263 points264 points ago

And then the wife joins in!

Wait, what were we watching, again?

[–]TheKeg 54 points55 points ago

Now that I would watch

[–]hyperblaster 33 points34 points ago

That results in:

  • Harassment lawsuit from secretary
  • Loss of job and black-balled in entire industry
  • Wife leaves you and gets everything you own
  • Unemployed, but still on the hook for alimony
  • Most of your family won't speak to you any more

/debbie downer

[–]ryeguy 203 points204 points ago

Yup. It's always "it's not what it looks like!" But before the guy has time to explain, the girl is long gone.

[–]scourge_of_carpathia[S] 537 points538 points ago

DING DING DING. Absolutely this. Without this and "pairing complete opposites" we'd never have another romantic comedy.

It drives me nuts when people tell me I can't take a joke when I don't laugh at this shit. It's not that I'm a shrill man-hating feminazi, it's that I've heard this joke a hundred thousand times already and it was NEVER FUNNY.

[–]kingneckbeard 565 points566 points ago

If by "x", you mean the "complete opposite of x" ...

[–]scourge_of_carpathia[S] 1005 points1006 points ago

Not really from a movie but this makes up nearly 90% of sketches on SNL these days: repetition.

Let's repeat the same joke/punchline for 5 minutes until the audiences decides it's funny. One wacky character that just says the same thing or a slight variation. Keenan, I'm looking at you.

[–]domdunc 132 points133 points ago

Pop, Pop!

[–]cockstereo 440 points441 points ago

[–]PepperSticks 134 points135 points ago

Community did this, but it was well done. Clip from Football, Feminism and You

[–]uhbijnokm 62 points63 points ago

Community is a big exception since a lot of it's humor is playing these tropes. Love this scene.

[–]color_me_impressed 650 points651 points ago

As I'm reading each one of these, I can think of examples when they weren't funny and examples when they were. It's all about delivery. Makes me think of the quote about there being only 7 different stories in this world, the rest are just variations of those stories.

[–]ruleofnuts 570 points571 points ago

There is always a love story. Stop that shit.

[–]baconated 275 points276 points ago

This annoys me beyond belief. Not every movie needs a love story wedged into it for no reason. This applies not only to comedies, but movies in general.

[–]inkonpaperhero 124 points125 points ago

"I'm sorry, it's just that I have attention deficit dis... wow, look at that shiny object/butterfly!"

Female stand up comics that only make jokes about sex.

[–]lockstockedd 242 points243 points ago

On the same note, comedians that do all race jokes. We get it, cultures are different. Just because you are black, mexican, asian, or indian doesn't mean that you have to do all race jokes.

Everyone tells me russell peters is funny but I can't stand the guy. I wish he would take note of aziz. He has a couple nods and jokes to race but it does not define him.

[–]scourge_of_carpathia[S] 360 points361 points ago

The mean/angry kid that kicks or irritates the protagonist until he does something mean back.

Other characters see the protagonist do this and fawn all over the "poor little child".

[–]Rantingbeerjello 297 points298 points ago

Sitcoms about attractive people with hip, spacious apartments in New York City who never seem to have to actually do any work in order to pay for said apartment which is made even more ridiculous by the fact that the humour inevitably revolves around how said attractive people fail at life by being generally incompetent.

Laughtracks, laughtracks, laughtracks, and laughtracks. I judge how awful tv shows are by how badly they abuse the laughtack.

Just to piss my sister off when she watches the Disney channel, I laugh historically every time they use the laugh track. Its so obnoxious when you realize how often they do that shit.

[–]jdeliverer 1563 points1564 points ago

What era of laughter do you aim for?

[–]DrTinyCat 67 points68 points ago

Their abuse has gotten so bad that they will use a laugh track even when nothing is funny. I sat down and watched an episode of "Wizards of Waverly Place" with my siblings and they would use a laugh track in the strangest of places. In one instance they magically traveled to a house and a laugh track was played when they appeared in a perfectly normal house with nothing weird going on. I still don't know why that was funny.

Chuck Norris once walked down the street with an erection. He got mugged.

The new WOW commercial, looking at you.

Way to show just how disconnected you've become...

[–]stickerface 208 points209 points ago

Nobody has mentioned fat suits. The black guy in a fat suit is the absolute worst premise ever.

Animals having the ability to talk.

[–]thesteelyglint 415 points416 points ago

In a similar vein, animal reaction shots. If I see a trailer which follows a joke with a shot of a dog cocking its head to the side, I know the movie is shit.

[–]CaptainLeader 80 points81 points ago

100% of the damn time, it's a fun romp for the whole family

[–]p4nda 599 points600 points ago

Also babies.

[–]djembeplayer 65 points66 points ago

This actually creeps me out. I also don't like when they photoshop an adult face on a baby...freaking strange.

[–]Waidawut 313 points314 points ago

You don't like animals having babies?

[–]coffeeisblack 81 points82 points ago

I was a mildly disappointed six year old to find my dog wasn't like the one in Homeward Bound.

[–]YourCommentBoresMe 189 points190 points ago

So much classier when talking animals didn't move their lips.

[–]Vitto9 200 points201 points ago

The scratching record, followed by awkward looks and silence. It's like they are telling me "Hey, this is funny. Pay attention here and you'll see something funny."

No. Fuck you. You don't get to tell me that it's funny. I'll decide if it's funny. If it is indeed amusing, I won't need you to fucking point it out. The inverse is also true. If you have to point it out, it's probably not funny. Fucking stop.

Character loses at something (like a coin toss): "Best two out of three?"

The wife putting her husband down verbally. Not funny.

[–]LatwPIAT 214 points215 points ago

Jokes about how, if a male character goes to jail, he will end up being raped by another man. Especially when the "other man" is black.

To a lesser extent, I am fine with unsympathetic characters using this as a threat, but I hate it when a show/movie wants me to think that a man being raped is somehow funny, or that having a male antagonist end up raped is "karmaic justice".

In a similar vein, "man doesn't want sex with beautiful woman, so he's forced into it for his own good". Because it's, y'know, rape.

Basically everything from Two and a Half Men.

[–]ExplorersBlood 161 points162 points ago

"I'm getting too old for this."

[–]GianterGinger 1205 points1206 points ago

Awkward does not equal funny.

[–]caex7 71 points72 points ago

Similarly, quirky does not equal funny.

[–]theleftenant 650 points651 points ago

Ugh yes, this a million times. Painfully awkward movie hilarity makes me anxiety-ridden as I watch it. I can't stand it.

[–]JeremyKean 340 points341 points ago

It gets even worse when they have to be like "Awkwaaaaaarrrrrd".

I mean really. Fuck subtlty.

[–][deleted] 1134 points1135 points ago

The idea that every dude is a fucking moron. This also applies to movies and commercials.

I guess it depends on the demographics the adds/shows are targeted at.
