Modern Family is one of those shows that makes me go "Holy crap, X is my favorite character ever!" where X is the character who last spoke.

The best episode is the clown one, I think.

The clown episode is like one of the better Frasier or Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes, where everything throughout the show just add up to an absurd crescendo.

And they still found room at the end to have a good positive family moment. Fantastic.

[–]Reptarftw 4 points5 points ago

I don't know about you, but this show doesn't feel anything like Arrested Development to me. It has 10% of AD's creativity/brilliant writing/replay value/etc...

it is a fairly normal show with, with some attractive mothers. It is a better show than most things out there, and true it has some unique moments and it makes you laugh, but this show doesn't have what it takes to be a Curb, Sein, Arrested, or Sunny. Especially after that Ipad episode, I just felt that this thing has way too much of an agenda. Yea, that episode really pissed me off. Anyway, it is a better than usual show. lets leave it at that, and that is my opinion.

[–]vanel 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The actors on modern family don't have the level of talent of the people on AD but modern family probably is the best comedy on TV right now.

All the characters really are funny, almost every character can carry a joke on their own, which in that regard is similar to AD. In AD you could give almost any character their own EP and it would be funny, you could probably do the same with modern family. Obviously the standout though is Phil, he is really why i started to watch the show.

[–]mobiusm 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I watch Modern Family but it isn't nearly as clever as Arrested Development. It doesn't have the crafting or hidden jokes. Better Off Ted reminded me more of AD, but maybe that's because Portia de Rossi is in it.

[–]bjs3171 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Better off Ted also has the same type of non-sequiters AD had. Not as creative, but the writing was similar.

[–]lacokat67 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed.... mostly. AD is art- nothing compares. And, Community (as Scarker mentioned) and Parks and Recreation are MUCH better than Modern Family. That said, i still like Modern Family alot.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think what Modern Family has that the show you mentioned don't is relatable characters. I like AD/Curb/Seinfeld/Sunny, but the people in those shows are not relatable. Arrested Development even admitted being unrelatable near the end of the show.

I'm usually not a huge fan of child actors, but I have to say that all of the quality actors and actresses across all age groups in Modern Family complement each other very well and play their part quite convincingly. Immensely enjoy Julie Bowen (<3) and Ty Burrell!

Phil is the new Michael Scott.

[–]Klass 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He kind of has that Michael Scott'ish way about him, doesn't he? Though Michael is way more self-interested and has far more depth (or sadness?) in his personality than Phil.

[–]ratbastid 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think there's depth to Phil that's just hinted at. You can sort of see behind the bluster sometimes into a deeply scared and small little human being. He's like Michael Scott if Michael HAD the wife and family he always wanted, and it still didn't fill the gaping hole in his soul, but he now has to pretend that it did.

I've never seen Ty Burrell in anything before, but I've got to say, it takes some serious chops to play a lovable buffoon like Phil Dunphy and pull it off as successfully as he does.

The iPad birthday episode made me cringe a little bit. The advertisement was so blatant that I couldn't just write it off as an ironic moment. The episode was still funny overall, though.

[–]thedragon4453 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually kind of liked that they just used apple rather than going with a made up approximation. Plus, it was damned funny. "it's like steve jobs and god made this for me on my birthday."

[–]phogasmic 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the episode made perfect sense. They didn't get any money from Apple for that episode. The writers wrote an episode about Phil wanting a hard to get gadget for his birthday before they knew about the iPad. Furthermore if that episode had been about any other gadget but the iPad it would have seemed fake.

[–]fancytalk 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Product placement (wherein companies pay shows to use their products instead of other products on screen) is incredibly common in the US entertainment industry. There is a reason why they use apple computers versus HP computers and the like. Why they use toyota instead of Ford. This sort of product placement is supposed to subliminally suggest to people to buy their products. It's sort of like The Joneses, but on TV instead of next door. Just another way to be assaulted by advertising for crap that you aren't looking for.

It doesn't make that much of a difference to me, I'm never buying a crappy over priced and over hyped apple product, but brand recognition is very very important in advertising and shopping, and believe it or not, but this sort of thing does make a huge difference in people's consuming habits.

[–]sodoh 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was an ad. Product placement is pretty much a given in all US entertainment. Just sometimes it gets horribly tacky.

Verizon wireless has the BEST coverage. One of those popular Verizon Wirless phones. Can we get our money now?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does it still count as product placement if they get no gain from using it? The show runner wrote an article or something about how they just used it as a nerdy plot point for nerdy Phil, not to get money (which they didn't).

[–]greenplasticman2002 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true, there is plenty of product placement, but I can't say it was product placement.

Say you wanted to tell this story, the fool wants a gadget and his wife fails to get it for him, there are two way to tell it.

  1. Use the IPad.
  2. Basically use the Ipad, but call it something else, like the URpad or something.

Option 1, you say product placement. Option 2, it looks hokey. The way it is, you are basically saying they can't tell their story the way they want to tell it.

[–]axemachine 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The producers denied it but Arstechnica did some research and found out it was just not as "clear" as they said. After all, we see Apple products (note how the logo is hidden) all over their house but for that episode the logos were clearly visible. Just watch the last episode, the logos are hidden again.

Modern Family hits the same sort of notes as The Office, Arrested Development, and PaR, but it has something that these shows all lack — heart. You really do care for these characters and feel like they are more than just caricatures. I'm looking right at you Michael Scott season 4.

[–]adolfojp 14 points15 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You hit the nail on the head. The show does show a lot of heart and I really like the fact that they treat their characters with a lot of respect. Most of the characters are absolute stereotypes, but they're not empty shells. They could have gone the easy route and made fun of the stereotypes that the characters portray, but instead they gave them a humanity and depth that really makes you care about them. You keep tuning in because you wish the characters well and not because you want to make fun of them... most of the time. And that takes a lot of skill and a lot of work.

But I wouldn't say that the other shows lack heart. They're just a lot more cold and cynical.

[–]fancytalk 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I definitely agree. My favorite example of that is Jay and Gloria's relationship. She seems like such an obvious gold digger/trophy wife but there is real affection between the characters and Jay works really hard to be a good father to Manny even though he is so weirded out by the kid.

i ran in to the girl who plays haley at a party a few weeks back. she was a sweetheart. i told her i was a big fan and she was very gracious.

I couldn't believe she was 19. She's almost 8 years older than the actress who plays her younger sister.

I'm from the UK, and usually American comedy shows are a bit too in-your-face and obvious for our sensitive British temperaments (I guess we like to work hard for our laughs ;-) ).

But Modern Family. Wow. It's literally the only American comedy show that has made me constantly laugh out loud. Utterly brilliant. The characters, the foxy mothers, the script-writing, the timing, it's all perfect. I never want it to end.

Fix that step.

Alex: "Did you draw on my poster?"

Haley: "Yeah, I did. Maybe you'll think about that the next time you read my journal."

Alex: "I didn't read your stupid journal, and I waited in line to get this signed, Haley."

Haley: "Oh, don't be such a baby. It's just some dude with weird hair."

Alex: "That's Maya Angelou, you idiot."

Haley: "Sorry I don't follow the WNBA."

reddit introduced me to it when they informed me it was a comedy with no laugh track.

with mind totally blown that I would not have to be told when to laugh.. i had to check it out.. I watched every episode that had been out.. about 15 minutes after reading about it on reddit.

thanks

I reluctantly watched with my girlfriend one evening...now, it's the only show I go out of my way to watch. It's the best show on network televison right now...hands down.

I do understand all the Phil love around here, he is a great character, but where is the love for Cameron? IMO the most consistently funny character on the show, and the most loveable. His relationship with both his daughter and boyfriend is heartwarming, and the fact he and his boyfriend are complete opposites adds a hilarious dynamic.

[–]Andoo 3 points4 points ago

I didn't think ABC was capable of making me laugh that hard. I mean not as hard as Philly of course, but still for a major network television show it's something just short of amazing.

[–]hintlime9 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My thoughts exactly. I originally heard it was pretty good but most/all ABC comedies have seemed unoriginal, unfunny, and a waste of time. I was surprised at how well done it was when I finally got around to watcing it.

The exchange that made me fall in love with the show, when Mitchell and Cameron were at the playgroup and Mitchell had begged Cam to turn down his gayness so they wouldn't stand out as weird. Might not be word-for-word, but:

Playground Leader: We're just over there blowing bubbles.

Cameron: Well, how nice for...the kids.

Favorite moment so far - when Jay has an actor who played a part in a horror flick come over to show Manny he's not so scary in real life - and ends up scaring the $h!# out of him! I couldn't stop laughing for like 10 minutes with that scene!

My girlfriend kept asking me to watch an episode with her because she thought I would enjoy it. I didn't think I would. After watching, I think it's great! I've laughed through entire episodes (well not quite). I think what the creators really nail on the head is that essence of the average person family and all of their quirks.

I've been describing it to my friends as a "more appropriate, slightly less funny, and a little less ridiculous form of Arrested Development"

I love the bit with the Asian doctor where she says she was raised away from the Asian stereotypes... then backs up into a few trashcans. I actually laughed out loud. There's definitely at least one laugh-out-loud moment each show - like the ADD sequence with Phil. Priceless.

I will give it a shot. "Community's" last episode had me laughing aloud, which is a testament to good comedic writing. Give it a look.

Noooooo, don't compare the show to Arrested Development. It's not bad, but you can't watch it with AD expectations. Oh, and Community is a way better and funnier show, how come no one is talking about it?

[–]DoinTheCockroach 2 points3 points ago

I have never watched more than maybe ten minutes of Arrested Development at a time. I guess I can relate to it about as well as a walrus can relate to a filing cabinet.

My wife and I enjoy Modern Family though. I think it is the variety the show offers. It exploits stereotypes but at least switches them up.
