Who here enjoys Modern Family? (self.AskReddit)
submitted 2 years ago by noer86
Anybody else watch this yet? Just started and I'm pleasantly surprised. It's kind of like Arrested Development, not quite as absurd or bawdy, but still pretty decent.

"Alex, honey, when you're out shopping, you might want to pick yourself up a training bra. I know you don't need one now but your little boobies are going to come in soon. Mommy loves you, kitten"
[–]emalik25 41 points42 points43 points 2 years ago
Claire is an extremely attractive MILF
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 2 years ago
Did you know she's in Happy Gilmore also?
[–]boyBlue32 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
She was a main character in the show "Ed," which I thought was actually pretty good, but nobody seems to talk about it ever.
[–]hangoneveryword 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
I loved Ed!
[–]MattJayP 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
She also had a sizeable stint in Boston Legal.
[–]bosstwizz 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Wow, didn't realize that until just now. Thanks reddit!
[–]lostonrails 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
She was also Jack's wife Sarah on Lost.
[–]Cyclick 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
What?!?! How did I never pick up on this!!! Oh my...I can't believe...Jesus Chr........
L O S T
[–]wee_man 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
And Weeds. She gets oral sex performed on her by the 18 yr old son.
[–]KeepJerseyDirty 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
This is by far the funniest line in the show. Just pure annihilation by Claire.
[–]fancytalk 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
I laughed so hard at that. She was just so cold.

[–]os851 21 points22 points23 points 2 years ago
i seriously loved that whole exchange, was fricken hysterical.
[–]kel-c 10 points11 points12 points 2 years ago
My boyfriend doesn't usually watch the show with me, but he happened to see that scene. That scene convinced him he should start watching the show.
[–]I_scored 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
your bf is so lucky he has a gf
[–]darknecross 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I bet he's even touched a boob. Or two!
[–]KaylaChinga 36 points37 points38 points 2 years ago
I LOVE this show!! I want to be the "trophy wife" that Cameron calls himself.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
"I want to go back to being a stay-at-home dad/trophy wife" I laughed so hard.... Love this show.
[–]distilledawesome 167 points168 points169 points 2 years ago
Modern Family is one of those shows that makes me go "Holy crap, X is my favorite character ever!" where X is the character who last spoke.
The best episode is the clown one, I think.
[–]diddydiddy 69 points70 points71 points 2 years ago
"So, yeah, I'm pretty much not afraid of anything. Except clowns. Never shared that with the fam' so shhh, I have an image to maintain. I am not really sure where the fear comes from; my mother says it's because when I was a kid I found a dead clown in the woods, but,who knows?"
[–]saintwhiskey 12 points13 points14 points 2 years ago
"As you can tell by the lack of goats in the street, we are not in Columbia."
[–]REInvestor 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago
"To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.”
[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 2 years ago
I drive through only recently gentrified neighborhoods
[–]MonikerInteger 14 points15 points16 points 2 years ago
The clown episode is like one of the better Frasier or Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes, where everything throughout the show just add up to an absurd crescendo.
And they still found room at the end to have a good positive family moment. Fantastic.
[–]Reptarftw 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
Agree. Mostly because the whole joke of the episode is that Luke's injury is entirely anticlimactic. It's almost just mentioned in passing haha.
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 2 years ago
Fizbo. The kick ass gay clown. Hilarious.
[–]irelayer 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago
Fizbo! That episode, Phil's Bday, and the Valentine's Day episode are my three faves (in no particular order) although they are all good. I am also equally attracted to Sophia Vergara and Julie Bowen.
Great show. Can't wait for next season...
[–]mondt 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
My mom went to school with the guy who plays Cam, so she made us watch the first ep.
Turned out to be great. =D
[–]UnemploydInGreenland 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Exactly. My favorite character is Mitchell. And Gloria. And Phil. And Alex. And Manny. And Claire. And Dylan.
[–]FetishOutOfNowhere 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
I don't know about you, but this show doesn't feel anything like Arrested Development to me. It has 10% of AD's creativity/brilliant writing/replay value/etc...
it is a fairly normal show with, with some attractive mothers. It is a better show than most things out there, and true it has some unique moments and it makes you laugh, but this show doesn't have what it takes to be a Curb, Sein, Arrested, or Sunny. Especially after that Ipad episode, I just felt that this thing has way too much of an agenda. Yea, that episode really pissed me off. Anyway, it is a better than usual show. lets leave it at that, and that is my opinion.
[–]vanel 23 points24 points25 points 2 years ago
The actors on modern family don't have the level of talent of the people on AD but modern family probably is the best comedy on TV right now.
All the characters really are funny, almost every character can carry a joke on their own, which in that regard is similar to AD. In AD you could give almost any character their own EP and it would be funny, you could probably do the same with modern family. Obviously the standout though is Phil, he is really why i started to watch the show.
[–]mobiusm 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
I watch Modern Family but it isn't nearly as clever as Arrested Development. It doesn't have the crafting or hidden jokes. Better Off Ted reminded me more of AD, but maybe that's because Portia de Rossi is in it.
[–]bjs3171 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Better off Ted also has the same type of non-sequiters AD had. Not as creative, but the writing was similar.
[–]lacokat67 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Agreed.... mostly. AD is art- nothing compares. And, Community (as Scarker mentioned) and Parks and Recreation are MUCH better than Modern Family. That said, i still like Modern Family alot.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
I think what Modern Family has that the show you mentioned don't is relatable characters. I like AD/Curb/Seinfeld/Sunny, but the people in those shows are not relatable. Arrested Development even admitted being unrelatable near the end of the show.
[–]SamuraiSevens 50 points51 points52 points 2 years ago
I was hooked the second they made a joke about the asian kid being named lily in the pilot
[–]neutrinosaurus 23 points24 points25 points 2 years ago
"Let me see the little pot sticker."
[–]manny130 25 points26 points27 points 2 years ago
Same here. "Lily? How's she ever going to pronounce her name?"
My thoughts at the time were that if they went there on the first episode, this show was going to be gold!
[–]shift6 23 points24 points25 points 2 years ago
I'm usually not a huge fan of child actors, but I have to say that all of the quality actors and actresses across all age groups in Modern Family complement each other very well and play their part quite convincingly. Immensely enjoy Julie Bowen (<3) and Ty Burrell!
[–]Chaser892 11 points12 points13 points 2 years ago
Yep, great characters and actors. The younger daughter has some of the best lines in the show.
[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 2 years ago
Alex: I think the problem is you're not jumping from high enough. You should get on top of the garage.
Claire: Alex stop trying to kill your brother.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
Luke: My parents keep telling me that I should stop talking black. I don't even know what that means! Fo Shizzle? Alex: They said talk back not black!
[–]whyioughtta 22 points23 points24 points 2 years ago
Mannnnnnnneeeeeeeee! that kid makes this show pure gold.
[–]DamnRandall 66 points67 points68 points 2 years ago
It's one of the best written shows on television right now.
Don't talk black to me!
[–]jelllyfish 16 points17 points18 points 2 years ago
How do you talk black to somebody? End every word with izzle?
[–]Poromenos 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
Yizzle.
[–]sablon 21 points22 points23 points 2 years ago
I've been watching it when I can. It cracks me up.
Favorite episode to date is the one where Manny is doing fencing and Mitchell's feeling inadequate. God, the figure skating scene with Mitchell and Claire had me in stitches.
Good show.
[–]mexicanidle 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
This is my favorite episode as well. Cameron's home "films." And Manny telling Jay "that's really as loud as I can go." I love this show. It's all so funny.
[–]karmainfection 19 points20 points21 points 2 years ago
fix that step!
[–]HighInsights 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
That is one of the best running gags ever. Just like the characters, as soon as you start forgetting about that darn step, someone trips over it.
[–]Erdos_0 53 points54 points55 points 2 years ago
Sophia Vegara!
[–]waltbomb 21 points22 points23 points 2 years ago
My wife is from Colombia. Everyone enjoyed her accent before, but since MF began, people get all giddy and say to her, "JES!!!" This, of course, is their way of requesting an "impression" of SV, at which point my wife rambles in her best "costeño" dialect.
Las tetas de Sofia PLV (para la victoria) [FTW].
[–]ismokeblunts 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
Her voice is almost reminiscent of fran drescher but oh god that accenttttttttttttttttt
[–]atrich 10 points11 points12 points 2 years ago
And those tits. Let's not forget those.
[–]jtkatz 25 points26 points27 points 2 years ago
Sofia* is smokin
[–]ratbastid 20 points21 points22 points 2 years ago
And hilarious.

[–]manny130 14 points15 points16 points 2 years ago
There's nothing wrong with Claire...other than she's ordinary in the Hollywood-hot-wife-in-suburbia scheme of things. Gloria is beyond smoking. And as mentioned above, fucking hilarious.
[–]Shaunward 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
I like when Phil calls them both his women.
[–]HoldingUpTheBar 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago
God Damn
[–]duckphobic 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
I found her to be much hotter when she didn't wear makeup (or little makeup I'm not sure) in the episode where she had dinner with Cameron when their car tires got stolen. Anyone else?
[–]schoogy 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Check her out on google images. . . I've been a Sophia fan for years. If I were to design my perfect woman. . . she would look just like her.
[–]StuGovGuy 69 points70 points71 points 2 years ago
Phil is the new Michael Scott.
[–]Klass 11 points12 points13 points 2 years ago
He kind of has that Michael Scott'ish way about him, doesn't he? Though Michael is way more self-interested and has far more depth (or sadness?) in his personality than Phil.
[–]ratbastid 26 points27 points28 points 2 years ago
I think there's depth to Phil that's just hinted at. You can sort of see behind the bluster sometimes into a deeply scared and small little human being. He's like Michael Scott if Michael HAD the wife and family he always wanted, and it still didn't fill the gaping hole in his soul, but he now has to pretend that it did.
I've never seen Ty Burrell in anything before, but I've got to say, it takes some serious chops to play a lovable buffoon like Phil Dunphy and pull it off as successfully as he does.
[–]lecomish 10 points11 points12 points 2 years ago
I rewatched Blackhawk Down a little while ago, and was amazed to find Phil Dumfy as an Army Ranger combat medic.
[–]hmasing 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0123092/
You've seen him in more than you realize. A friend of mine who has worked with Ty tells me that he is a chameleon of an actor - he can disappear in to about any role he takes on.
[–]BackspaceMan 14 points15 points16 points 2 years ago
He's good, but I'll never stop thinking of how much of a dick Steve was in Dawn of the Dead every time I see him.
[–]hmasing 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
http://www.entertonement.com/clips/gnkdrcjkdj--Ham-sandwichDawn-of-the-Dead-Steve-Dawn-of-the-Dead-
[–]purplepansy11 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Go watch Dawn of the Dead.
[–]dallen 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
Ty Burrell looks exactly like our Senior VP at work. He's in the office so seldom that we've started joking that the SVP doesn't exist and the company just hires Ty to come in and play a SVP whenever there is a company event or a big meeting.
[–]rajulkabir 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
It took Michael a while to get there.
[–]ILikeAppleJuice 30 points31 points32 points 2 years ago
JJJYESSS.
[–]notthesizeoftheboat 31 points32 points33 points 2 years ago
"She said Phil, not feel."
[–]sloppenis 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
I could fap to that.
[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points 2 years ago
I love it so. I don't think there's been a weak episode so far.
[–][deleted] 52 points53 points54 points 2 years ago
The iPad birthday episode made me cringe a little bit. The advertisement was so blatant that I couldn't just write it off as an ironic moment. The episode was still funny overall, though.
[–]thedragon4453 27 points28 points29 points 2 years ago
I actually kind of liked that they just used apple rather than going with a made up approximation. Plus, it was damned funny. "it's like steve jobs and god made this for me on my birthday."
[–]phogasmic 15 points16 points17 points 2 years ago
I think the episode made perfect sense. They didn't get any money from Apple for that episode. The writers wrote an episode about Phil wanting a hard to get gadget for his birthday before they knew about the iPad. Furthermore if that episode had been about any other gadget but the iPad it would have seemed fake.
[–]fancytalk 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
I agree on some level but I really liked that Phil's character was an Apple fanboy. It just seemed so right.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 2 years ago
It wasn't an ad. At least, they deny it was -- and Apple fans are pretty like that IRL
[–]genki008 10 points11 points12 points 2 years ago
dude. sometimes the whole show is like an extended ad for apple and toyota. its not even subtle. they're always listening to their ipods, using their mac laptops, and talking about the features on their toyotas. i guess i'm used to that sort of thing in media by now because i do like the show.
Product placement (wherein companies pay shows to use their products instead of other products on screen) is incredibly common in the US entertainment industry. There is a reason why they use apple computers versus HP computers and the like. Why they use toyota instead of Ford. This sort of product placement is supposed to subliminally suggest to people to buy their products. It's sort of like The Joneses, but on TV instead of next door. Just another way to be assaulted by advertising for crap that you aren't looking for.
It doesn't make that much of a difference to me, I'm never buying a crappy over priced and over hyped apple product, but brand recognition is very very important in advertising and shopping, and believe it or not, but this sort of thing does make a huge difference in people's consuming habits.
[–]sodoh 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
It was an ad. Product placement is pretty much a given in all US entertainment. Just sometimes it gets horribly tacky.
No one remember Claires birthday present in Heroes season 2? Or the XPS laptop in the last season of SG-1.
[–]Driyen 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
I remember the Nissan in Heroes, it was so annoying
NISSAN VERSA!
[–]Poromenos 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
While we're on the subject, is what 30 Rock does product placement? They make it really over-the-top and egregious, which makes it more of an awesome joke than an ad.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago
Like the Snapple placement? That was hilarious. I call it the "Wayne's World" ad.
[–]ferio252 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
Verizon wireless has the BEST coverage. One of those popular Verizon Wirless phones. Can we get our money now?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Does it still count as product placement if they get no gain from using it? The show runner wrote an article or something about how they just used it as a nerdy plot point for nerdy Phil, not to get money (which they didn't).
[–]greenplasticman2002 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
This is true, there is plenty of product placement, but I can't say it was product placement.
Say you wanted to tell this story, the fool wants a gadget and his wife fails to get it for him, there are two way to tell it.
Option 1, you say product placement. Option 2, it looks hokey. The way it is, you are basically saying they can't tell their story the way they want to tell it.
[–]axemachine 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
The producers denied it but Arstechnica did some research and found out it was just not as "clear" as they said. After all, we see Apple products (note how the logo is hidden) all over their house but for that episode the logos were clearly visible. Just watch the last episode, the logos are hidden again.
[–]kingjehu 60 points61 points62 points 2 years ago
Modern Family > Glee.
[–]ahadiel 36 points37 points38 points 2 years ago
I didn't know that was even a question
[–]randall82 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
Glee was actually funny for a few episodes, then they turned it into High School Musical and ruined it
[–]hitogokoro 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Glee was actually funny for a few episodes, then they... ruined it.
| FTFY
It's not b/c its anything like HSM, it's just plain bad now. The plot is ridiculous and the characters and their actions are annoyingly unrealistic and difficult to believe.
[–]nosayso 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Yeah, it's pretty much the definition of "contrived" now... really disappointing.
[–]Creepybusguy 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
Glee = High School Musical for adults
[–]oski2005 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
for adults?
[–]PlankToTheFace 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
anything > glee
[–]roger_ -2 points-1 points0 points 2 years ago
Community > Modern Family.
[–]johnb 22 points23 points24 points 2 years ago
I love how the characters on Community are this close to just admitting that they're on a TV show.
[–]20stud 10 points11 points12 points 2 years ago
do you, do you, wanna do me? do me?
[–]citruselectro 31 points32 points33 points 2 years ago
It's damn hilarious. I like how it's filmed documentary style. Adds a whole new level of hilarity.
[–]notsoanonymous 11 points12 points13 points 2 years ago
I've also noticed them adding in flashbacks / inserts for a joke. Claire doing doing Luke's paper route.
[–]kitler 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Hahaha that was so funny. I literally couldn't stop laughing.
[–]Weenie 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
Always a fan of mocumentary, I have to agree. I love those moments where characters will look to the camera crew in a small acknowledgement of the spectator's presence. And I love that they don't overdo it.
[–]Etheo 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Yeah i kept picking up those little moments when they will just look in the camera constantly reminding you that they're aware they're on camera.
At first I thought it was a slip up, and then I noticed the pattern and realize it was intentional. Brilliant.
[–]deliciousmeats 21 points22 points23 points 2 years ago
Definitely feels like Arrested Development, but has with its own hilarious merit. I just love when the "normal" mother gets revenge on her daughter by embarrassing her in front of her friends at the mall and says to herself, "that'll teach her to screw with me."
[–]ajflo 11 points12 points13 points 2 years ago*
The scene where Alex is reading aloud the symptoms of ADHD while Phil is in the garage absolutely kills me every time.
[–]eez28 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago
Just started? wow, you have some catching up to do. Great, hilarious show.
[–]heytherejesus 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago
One of the lines that really had me laughing was in Starry Night. When Haley made cupcakes for school, Luke walks in and says, "my mouth is asleep like at the dentist" with a bitten cupcake in his hand.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago
I discovered it when a friend linked me to the iPad episode. (My guy paralleled Phil, sadly.) Since then, I've tried to catch a few episodes. I really like it and will get around to downloading all the episodes.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
The iPad episode was really emotional. I almost cried with happiness when he blew out the e-candles.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
Oh, god, it's a great show.
In one of the earlier episodes, Gloria (hot latina wife) is telling a story and can't remember the English word for helicopter, so she does this fast chopper sound and her accent comes through while she's doing it...I don't know why, but I found it ridiculously hilarious.
[–]dagurb 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
Her accent (the actress') is actually like that. Here she is on Ellen.
[–]KevinMcCallister 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
I've watched every episode. I honestly think it is the best comedy on television. Every character, from Luke to Cameron bring something to the table. Plus I think Claire is ridiculously hot.
She really is.
[–][deleted] 25 points26 points27 points 2 years ago
Modern Family hits the same sort of notes as The Office, Arrested Development, and PaR, but it has something that these shows all lack — heart. You really do care for these characters and feel like they are more than just caricatures. I'm looking right at you Michael Scott season 4.
[–]adolfojp 14 points15 points16 points 2 years ago*
You hit the nail on the head. The show does show a lot of heart and I really like the fact that they treat their characters with a lot of respect. Most of the characters are absolute stereotypes, but they're not empty shells. They could have gone the easy route and made fun of the stereotypes that the characters portray, but instead they gave them a humanity and depth that really makes you care about them. You keep tuning in because you wish the characters well and not because you want to make fun of them... most of the time. And that takes a lot of skill and a lot of work.
But I wouldn't say that the other shows lack heart. They're just a lot more cold and cynical.
[–]fancytalk 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
I definitely agree. My favorite example of that is Jay and Gloria's relationship. She seems like such an obvious gold digger/trophy wife but there is real affection between the characters and Jay works really hard to be a good father to Manny even though he is so weirded out by the kid.
[–]thefortitude 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
What is PaR?
[–]marxsydc 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
Parks and Recreation (I think...)

[–]thewibbler 15 points16 points17 points 2 years ago
I'm from the UK, and usually American comedy shows are a bit too in-your-face and obvious for our sensitive British temperaments (I guess we like to work hard for our laughs ;-) ).
But Modern Family. Wow. It's literally the only American comedy show that has made me constantly laugh out loud. Utterly brilliant. The characters, the foxy mothers, the script-writing, the timing, it's all perfect. I never want it to end.
Fix that step.
[–]razorbeamz 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago
We watched an episode of this in my sociology class yesterday. I had never heard of it prior. I throughly enjoyed it.

[–]Weebles_Wobble 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago

reddit introduced me to it when they informed me it was a comedy with no laugh track.
with mind totally blown that I would not have to be told when to laugh.. i had to check it out.. I watched every episode that had been out.. about 15 minutes after reading about it on reddit.
thanks
[–]MindStalker 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
You watch every episode in just 15 minutes? Mind Blown
[–]peteyH 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
It's brilliant. I hope it runs forever.
[–]MaverickTTT 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
I reluctantly watched with my girlfriend one evening...now, it's the only show I go out of my way to watch. It's the best show on network televison right now...hands down.
[–]safetydance 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
I do understand all the Phil love around here, he is a great character, but where is the love for Cameron? IMO the most consistently funny character on the show, and the most loveable. His relationship with both his daughter and boyfriend is heartwarming, and the fact he and his boyfriend are complete opposites adds a hilarious dynamic.
[–]Andoo 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
I didn't think ABC was capable of making me laugh that hard. I mean not as hard as Philly of course, but still for a major network television show it's something just short of amazing.
[–]hintlime9 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
My thoughts exactly. I originally heard it was pretty good but most/all ABC comedies have seemed unoriginal, unfunny, and a waste of time. I was surprised at how well done it was when I finally got around to watcing it.
The exchange that made me fall in love with the show, when Mitchell and Cameron were at the playgroup and Mitchell had begged Cam to turn down his gayness so they wouldn't stand out as weird. Might not be word-for-word, but:
Playground Leader: We're just over there blowing bubbles.
Cameron: Well, how nice for...the kids.
[–]joshdick 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I loved that scene, too.
"I just stole that baby's intellectual property."
[–]UNHDude 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Haha yeah I was hooked after that scene. "how nice for ... the kids" was so perfectly delivered.
[–]laughingwater 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
Two things flaming at once!
[–]vodman 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
There's a fantastic PHO... ... place right around the corner from our house. Am I pronouncing that right, is it PHO?
[–]tblarson 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
Favorite moment so far - when Jay has an actor who played a part in a horror flick come over to show Manny he's not so scary in real life - and ends up scaring the $h!# out of him! I couldn't stop laughing for like 10 minutes with that scene!
Great show, I found out about it recently and watched all 22 eps in about 2 days.
Cam is my favorite. "oh, don't tell me this is your first moon landing"
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 2 years ago
it's nothing like arrested development. no no no. that is so blasphemous.
that said, i enjoy modern fam. <3 phil. and the manny + jay dynamic.
Steve Jobs and God got together and said...."We love you Phil!"
[–]kabuto 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Great show, best new comedy show this season in my opinion.
[–]theinterned 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
My girlfriend kept asking me to watch an episode with her because she thought I would enjoy it. I didn't think I would. After watching, I think it's great! I've laughed through entire episodes (well not quite). I think what the creators really nail on the head is that essence of the average person family and all of their quirks.
[–]andnothinghurt 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
I've been describing it to my friends as a "more appropriate, slightly less funny, and a little less ridiculous form of Arrested Development"
I love the bit with the Asian doctor where she says she was raised away from the Asian stereotypes... then backs up into a few trashcans. I actually laughed out loud. There's definitely at least one laugh-out-loud moment each show - like the ADD sequence with Phil. Priceless.
[–]lobido 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
I will give it a shot. "Community's" last episode had me laughing aloud, which is a testament to good comedic writing. Give it a look.
[–]prameya 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
I enjoy it. Been watching even since it came out. The fat gay guy is probably my favorite. And I love the kid too, he is creepy smart :)
[–]Hiro-of-Shadows 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Yeah, Luke's a real genius, isn't he?
[–]prameya 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I meant Luke's uncle... but I lie Luke too :)
[–]derilyn 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Yes! I started watching because the skinny gay guy is one of my favorite comedians (Jesse Ferguson) but he is so funny as well, almost funnier!
Oh, and TIL that the licence plate on their car is the same as Larry Davids on Curb your enthusiasm.
[–]MrHeavySilence 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
I love Glee, but this should've won the Golden Globe
[–]mmmbot 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
Noooooo, don't compare the show to Arrested Development. It's not bad, but you can't watch it with AD expectations. Oh, and Community is a way better and funnier show, how come no one is talking about it?
[–]DoinTheCockroach 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Seriously, I was hooked to community, but I couldn't get into Parks and Recreation even after a few episodes.
[–]hookedupphat 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
It's an amazing show, I absolutely love it.
I love that show!
[–]mahelke 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I love this show. It reminds me of my own family. I'm a big fan of Manny and his "That's too much cologne!"
[–]megafly 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I haven't watched it, but they don't give just any show a Peabody so I'll have to get it on DVD
[–]bluehawk_one 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago

[–]kulinsjr 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I enjoy it.
[–]Baresi 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Yeah, I've watched it since it started. I love it
[–]frakbuddy 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I saw a few episodes and really enjoyed it.
[–]os851 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
chill phil, chill.
[–]ooglag 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
modern family, along with the office, are the two shows that have me smiling throughout the entire episode. modern family is freaking hilarious.
[–]electrolemon 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Hell yeah I do.
[–]brufleth 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I have never watched more than maybe ten minutes of Arrested Development at a time. I guess I can relate to it about as well as a walrus can relate to a filing cabinet.
My wife and I enjoy Modern Family though. I think it is the variety the show offers. It exploits stereotypes but at least switches them up.
I have a crush on Phil Dunphy. He's just so adorable.
[–]JCell5 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
i just got hooked on it. although Mannie is starting to piss me off. he is not that funny
[–]tentativepunter 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago*
I haven't seen the program, but found a clip on youtube. My first thought was: I wonder if this is a US remake of Outnumbered? EDIT: Here's another clip of Outnumbered.
My second thought was: no it isn't, and ooh look, there's Al Bundy.
[–]OneLifeLiveIt 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
This and how i met your mother.
[–]beccaonice 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I like this show, but I don't see the Arrested Development similarity at all.
all it takes is a username and password
