Google Latitude (a feature of Maps).

[–]Imnotknown[S] 2 points3 points ago

So it is, thank you! :)

[–]SirHugh 2 points3 points ago

You might find latitude doesn't update frequently enough for your needs. Glympse might do what you need. You can share a 'gympse' with non-android users too.

Latitude has (or at least had) a feature that would force maps to update your location every 30 seconds, or something, for a limited time.

(I'm using an alpha ICS release, so my latitude doesn't work right, otherwise I would check to see if this feature is still there.)

They removed this feature a few months ago. No explanation was given.

[–]pconwellpassion | CM nightlies 0 points1 point ago

Ah, okay. I wonder why, it seemed like a pretty useful feature, I know I used it a handful of times.

[–]dionysuslives 0 points1 point ago

They did but it seemed to be a change of approach thing. Used it last week and as soon as you keep it on someone (ie shown on map) they start updating faster. Only use it once a week or so, so I'm no expert user.

Can you tell glympse "I am here"? or does it need a location lock-on?

[–]SirHugh 0 points1 point ago

I think you need a lock on.

[–]MercurialMadnessManGalaxy S i9000m, ICS, Bell Canada 0 points1 point ago

That sucks. There don't seem to be many apps that allow you to tell it your location. In many cases, location services absolutely blow. And some of the best selling android phones have had notoriously horrid GPS.

There is a fairly large festival in Australia called Splendor in the Grass. It's a few days of truly amazing fun and each time I have gone I have come across lovely young ladies, with whom you only have fleeting moments, somewhat like Carnival. While at a festival you can sometimes get stuck by yourself (I have always gone with a group of people) and depending on your state this can suck. Mobile reception is toast at festivals and batteries never last a day due to loads of poncy self photography and updates to bookface.

10 years ago I had the idea of a bracelet (thing clear plastic "Live Strong") that when you raised your hand in the air, would flash at a certain rate alerting you to both the distance and direction of your closest "buddy" or person whom you had paired with. Very much like a super even wristband. When you and your crew arrived you would all "synch up" think hands in "Go team" pre sporting matchtype of thing. Then lest on of you be lost your closest buddy could be found. anyone by themselves would flash red say persons coupled up or in more than 2 would be green etc. And even better when you met up with that handsome chap or lovely lass you could "make a connection" and then perhaps find him/her again if chance or 15,000 people going mental to Matisyahu split you apart.

I assume before the festival was setup the entire grounds would need to setup with a massive wifi like mesh and you would need various "FestiTrak" waypoints where upon running out of battery you could have your bracelet (and contacts) duped and replaced with a fully charged unit.

Obviously it's all much more complicated than that buts it's a 10 year old idea that I would pay $20 bucks for at a festival. Now I must shower.

Battery life (and yes reception) are definitely valid concerns.

Also i really like the idea of the color changing as people are separated or grouped together.

Blinking led's in a bracelet doesn't sound too demanding

[–]Imnotknown[S] 0 points1 point ago

I meant in reference to a cell phone app :)

[–]xanxittoDroid Razr -1 points0 points ago

OK check this video out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxnKOQkWwF8

It worked perfect on my Droid and Droid X and for some reason it won't work on my Razr. But you and your friend(s) should give it a try if you want to find someone with Airshot (see video at 2:50). It really blows my mind that this kind of app aren't too popular although this is the first one of its kind i know. Any ways here's the market link if you wanna give it a try. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.tonchidot.sekaicamera

[–]Imnotknown[S] 0 points1 point ago

This is actually pretty close to what i was thinking also. The only difference would be your phone gives off a continous "air tag" to people looking on their phonethat you allow to see your air tag.

[–]xanxittoDroid Razr 0 points1 point ago

what you mean by continuos?

[–]runeanGalaxy Nexus, AOKP M4 1 point2 points ago

I think he means the persons (being found) phone constantly sends out its GPS coordinates and then sends them to the other phone frequently so the finders phone can map their tagged locations on the screen in real time, therefore if either of them move the phone can compensate.

[–]xanxittoDroid Razr 1 point2 points ago*

What I would do in a situation like that will be to send the other person a text telling them to open the app so you can find them. And you fire it up and do all the searching and stuff, when you find the person you both can exit the app. Of course the other persons profile needs to be public i believe, you really don't need to leave an AirTag. When you use the app and make yourself a profile and you upload a profile picture if someone has the app fired up and you're around "searching" you can see their profile picture(no airtag neeed) in the air thought the AR. You need to experiment this with two phone to see what im talking about if im not too clear.

Edit: if the person is lets say 50 yard away from you and you're walking straight to them the "airtag/profile picture" is show on top of the person with the other phone that has Sekai Camera fired up. Of course you are seeing the airtag and profile picture throught your phones camera AR.

[–]Imnotknown[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yes exactly. Though it would be cool if the person searching for the person had the sbility to force the persons phone they were looking for to broadcast gps signal as needed.

[–]sasky_81 0 points1 point ago

I would think a feature like that would need to be opt-in (parents + kids, for example), as it is entirely possible someone might not want to be found by a specific person at any given time.

I can certainly see the usefulness of this app, though.

[–]Imnotknown[S] 1 point2 points ago

Oh definitely thats why i used the google + circles reference in the original post. If you've never used g+ you have full control over who sees your posts from 1 to 3 to everyone on g+

Part of the functionality can sort of be done with Handsent. It allows me to text a location link via...um text. They click on it, load the map and find me.

[–]roofuskitAtrix 4G, CM7 Ba2tF 0 points1 point ago

That function is also built into Google maps.

[–]kevan 0 points1 point ago

The function to tell someone where you are when the two of you only have smart phones?

[–]roofuskitAtrix 4G, CM7 Ba2tF 0 points1 point ago

Texting somone your location.

[–]kevan 0 points1 point ago

If someone is looking for you or vice versa, chances are one of you is already looking at your texting app and answering a text that says, "where are you?"

[–]giveitago 0 points1 point ago

family locator

[–]Imnotknown[S] 1 point2 points ago

Holy crap there are a lot of apps named family locator. Anyone in particular?
