I had a cat once. Well, I've had many cats, but this is the only one I claim. It was a pure, black cat named Max. We named it Maxine when we found out it was a girl. Best cat ever... It would let me hold it, pet it on it's stomach, and I even fed it duck carcasses when I was through cleaning them.

I also had a dog at time time. Name was "Sassy"; my mom named her when I was 7 or 8. My sister used to antagonize this dog, pulling her from underneath the couch to play with her. The dog was also the best dog I've ever had too, and I LOVE dogs.

It was a Shih'Tzu. It slept in the bed with me even though my father didn't approve. My sister was her favorite though. We used to have these contests to see who the dog would go to. We'd put her in the middle of us, sit down Indian-style and call her. When I acted like I had food, she'd come.

At this point the dog had become very old. It wouldn't move much, and she stank to high heaven. Maxine would groom this dog every chance we let her out. It would spend all it's time licking this dog, and sit close by guarding her it seemed. One day Maxine got hit by a car right outside our driveway, I mean pancacked. No one gave it much thought, because no one really liked cats in my family. I was decimated.

I didn't let anyone know how I felt about that cat, and I wasn't much of a cat person. I'm still not... About a year later, Sassy had a seizure. I watched the dog flop around helplessly in my sister's arms after she awoke me, and lead me to her room. The dog looked drunk, and unable to lift her own head without swaying.

The vet promised that she would be ok, but I knew once my parents left with her that she wasn't going to be. I refused to go to the vet with them, and told my parents that I would stay home with my sister because she was hysterical. She went to school the next two days with eyes looking like Bob Marley's. I never cried over either of the animals, but I think they both offset each other. It was like they both repaid kindness to our family, maybe unknowingly, maybe the cat just liked grooming, maybe the dog was just submissive; I don't know, but to this day I have never felt love for another pet.

For some reason this post made me think about Maxine and Sassy. Thanks, OP.
