thats beyond adorable. heres mine

[–]elastigirl 8 points9 points ago

I am beyond jealous of you. I have always wanted a pet squirrel. Does it just hang out with you and chill like any other pet? What goes into the care and feeding of a domesticated squirrel?

[–]R88SHUN 29 points30 points ago*

its really hard to care for them - most people dont have the time money or knowledge to keep a baby squirrel healthy and happy and they usually die from it. plus they simply cant be entirely domesticated. thats why theyre illegal in most places.

thankfully despite all of that he bonded with me when he was a baby. i fed him formula through a syringe every few hours for months, its a very time intensive process - you need months of 24 hour care. i laid down with him as he would take naps curled up under my beard every day. i was the first thing he saw when his eyes opened for the first time.

now he hangs out on my shoulder all the time. he runs around me like a tree, and wanders off here and there around the house for some exploration. he combs his little claws through my hair and beard like a monkey - its not like he finds bugs in there like he would with a wild squirrel, but its a nice social behavior. he wrestles with my hand and sometimes when he bites me a little too hard he grabs my hand and licks the spot where he hurt me as a sort of apology - its amazing. now and then he does what they call a "face plant" which is when they jump and latch on to your face as a sort of full body hug that happens to hurt like hell, but ive mostly trained that out of him with "time outs"

they also need a varied diet. i feed him this stuff i order online called rodent blocks(i have a special thing where i grind them up and mix them with applesauce, nuts and powdered formula to ensure he gets all of his vitamins) and i supplement it with lots and lots of vegetables and fruits/nuts/berries as treats.

i wouldnt recommend a pet squirrel if you dont have the time and money they require. most people dont have such good experiences with raising and keeping them - even the professionals are amazed at our relationship.

[–]darthcarnate 3 points4 points ago

and shits on the carpet like a field.

[–]R88SHUN 10 points11 points ago*

hes actually pretty particular about where he does his business. he has a box like a cat - to be fair i positively reenforced that behavior when he was still a baby and it isnt fail safe - but his droppings are easily the most inoffensive shit ive ever encountered in my life. just little pellets.

male squirrels are meticulously clean creatures.

[–]darthcarnate 4 points5 points ago

Yeah I guess like rabbits, if you housetrain them from babies they'll be pretty clean. Just wanted to make a third comment about an animal shitting in 5 minutes - I'm on a ROLL.

[–]corntortilla 2 points3 points ago

You can easily train a rabbit to use a litter box, even adult ones. Just keep a litter box lined with newspaper and dump hay in it. They tend to shit and piss during or right after eating, so as they eat hay they'll train themselves to use the box. HOORAY!

[–]catscan1 1 point2 points ago

Just curious, does he leave a strong scent in the house? I'm babysitting my friend's medicated ferret- pretty smelly. And of course his name happens to be Stinky.

[–]R88SHUN 6 points7 points ago*

i have a pretty acute sense of smell and as far as i can tell he doesnt have a noticeable scent at all. even when i mush my face against him i dont smell anything - and my house smells the same as it did before i brought him home.

his pee has a smell when it accumulates but its not terrible(not sure if its actually not bad or i just love him too much to be bothered by it) and i clean his bathroom area fairly often - but ive never noticed a smell from his poo.

scale of 1 to 10: 1 being "odorless" and 10 being "cats definitely own this house" he is at most a 2.

[–]lunameow 0 points1 point ago

Heh. Feeding through a syringe is fun, especially if they get distracted. I volunteer at a wildlife rescue, and I usually show up hoping no one's fed the opossums yet, because they're so much easier than squirrels. It's super-crazy-hard not to habituate them, though, because you just want to play with all the little baby animals and cuddle them, and you can't, because then they can't be released back into the wild (and while an occasional squirrel pet is acceptable, a few hundred wild animals who aren't afraid of human contact is a Bad Thing).

All this just to say "Aww, baby squirrels!" and "For most people, the best course of action on finding a baby squirrel is to contact your local wildlife rescue."

[–]R88SHUN 0 points1 point ago

yeah as daunting as the schedule was i miss the days of feeding him through the syringe. its almost never in their best interest to give them too much affection and get attached but my little guy is blind in his right eye so i will never be comfortable releasing him - which isnt so bad considering wild squirrels only live a few years while captive squirrels can live up to ten.

though now that i have the skill set to keep the babies alive i have to be very careful to avoid falling for more of these painfully adorable little creatures.

[–]Darksider94 1 point2 points ago

That. Is. Awesome. I want a pet squirrel now that I've read all of what you've posted :(

[–]definitelynother 6 points7 points ago

adorable! do his/her eyes look milky because of the flash...?

[–]R88SHUN 12 points13 points ago*

no he is blind in his right eye. im fairly certain its because he fell about 30-40 feet from his nest to the sidewalk when he was a week or two old. thats when i found him and brought him home - but i nursed him back to health and now were best friends.

if you look at the last picture you can see the bruises and scrapes all over his right side. thats a few days after i found him.

[–]definitelynother 8 points9 points ago

awww. he's adorable!

[–]Citizen_Snip 0 points1 point ago

As a kid, my pop pop found two abandoned baby squirrels by the side of the road and took them in. We named them Nippy and Dippy and they were the most bad ass pets. We (me and my cousins) only had them for a little bit because unfortunately, my cousins cat ended up getting to them.

[–]Beebig 116 points117 points ago

Read "Baby Squirtles." I was massively disappointed.

[–]Se7en_Sinner 9 points10 points ago

They're only found in Japan.

[–]JoshMachines 1 point2 points ago

and not tanned.

[–]justformypenis 4 points5 points ago

From the thumbnail, they look like the motorcycle from Akira.

[–]skakruk 4 points5 points ago

[–]Beebig 1 point2 points ago

skakruk to the rescue. Appreciate it, man.

[–]TKrohn -1 points0 points ago

I was going to post the same thing, but it would be considered a repost and multiple downvotes could come my way.

[–]cognitive_science 1 point2 points ago

So did I, but I wasn't disappointed.

[–]Jaredmf 1 point2 points ago

I was JUST about to post this... Are you me from the future?

[–]silent_p 1 point2 points ago

When I looked at the thumbnail, I thought it looked like the squirrels were covered in butterscotch. I was also massively disappointed.

[–]triscuit540 1 point2 points ago

This was my exact thought..but then again I am high so it made perfect sense until I saw the picture and was like "aw man" :[

[–]SonicFlash01 1 point2 points ago

This. Verbatim.

[–]zumbazumba 0 points1 point ago

Aww nuts this is cute.

[–]d3jg 1 point2 points ago

Came in here precisely for this comment.

[–]AgnosticJesus 0 points1 point ago

Up vote for same misreading

[–]dyoano 26 points27 points ago

Not gonna lie, the thumbnail makes it look like BBQ chicken on rice.

[–]doubleyoshi 8 points9 points ago

It looked like poop to me. So many poops. I avoided it until I was really bored. Then it was squirrels. I was disappointed.

[–]whitehat2k9 1 point2 points ago

I can't imagine the taste is very different either.

[–]arsalan1230 1 point2 points ago

Or a picture of a turd. A very weird turd.

[–]StephenBeard 1 point2 points ago

Tastiest looking squirrels i've ever seen.

[–]victor54113 2 points3 points ago

Did anyone see a caramel bike when looking at the thumbnail?

[–]meAndb 1 point2 points ago

Going to be honest, it looked like a pile of dung.

[–]wmurray003 0 points1 point ago

I saw a squirlie riding a motorcycle.

[–]tauroid 0 points1 point ago

[–]DitchTits 1 point2 points ago

Your face when you see that the thumbnail is a motorcycle :0

[–]Reddevil313 0 points1 point ago

[–]jumbo-shrimp 2 points3 points ago

[–]born_slippy_ -1 points0 points ago

They're not sleeping, they're dead.

[–]pettysoulgem 0 points1 point ago

Semi-relevant. Squirrel doing backflips

[–]Havokk 0 points1 point ago

I was doing a field training course in the mountains for a summer to finish up my degree. we lived in tents and hiked bringing everything we needed on our backs. it was a small size group and after we would have a meal we would have to do clean up. we had 3 (5 gallon) buckets, one with soapy water, one with a 10% bleach solution and one fresh for rinsing. well someone forgot to empty them and food was floating in it from the left overs on the plate. it was my turn to clean dishes from breakfast. i get to the first bucket and its full of fucking dead squirrels, 3 or so but it look like this but with hot dog chunks and water. i just thought i would share the memory this reminds me of. . . . (O )_( o)

[–]spalad 5 points6 points ago

What sort of training course was this, out of curiosity? I ask because experienced backpackers know better than to leave buckets of poison out for the local residents to discover. You were lucky it was squirrels and not a family of bears.

[–]Havokk 0 points1 point ago

Field geology and we were more concerned with rodents since we were in plague country. the guy just screwed up is all. if you leave food in yoru tents they tend to eat holes though them.

[–]tinyirishgirl 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for the smile.

Such sweetness!

[–]pengwins 0 points1 point ago

Pretty much everywhere, it's gonna be hot.

[–]collegeisascam 0 points1 point ago

[–]Parthenonn 0 points1 point ago

Last Thursday, as I was walking to the my last class a squirrel fell out of the tree, and the splat was unbelievable... It did live however, though not sure if it was ok. It fell like 20 feet from the tree....

[–]TheB-man 0 points1 point ago

[–]farcus 0 points1 point ago

[–]shapoopshoot 0 points1 point ago

yeah, cute... until they get older, and decide to get into your engine compartment of your vehicle, and stockpile a few hundred pine cones in there. yeah, realllll cute. -_-

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Relevant: We put our car in the garage for the winter. Somehow a squirrel got in and made a nest in the insulation under the hood. Since we didn't drive it for six months the squirrel had a family in our hood insulation. We had to get it replaced since it was all torn up and was a fire hazard.

[–]skateboard34 0 points1 point ago

Sleeping? That's what they all say.

[–]Ngawa 0 points1 point ago

In case anyone was wondering, baby squirrels smell like a homeless person's asshole.

[–]tamar 0 points1 point ago

Did you take these squirrels in as pets? The makeshift bed seems to indicate such....

[–]debbieknapp 0 points1 point ago

AWWW! So cute! Do you have picture of him curled up under your beard?

[–]g_a_b_e_2_0_1_1 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry but they look like turds.

[–]dinoignacio 1 point2 points ago

I came here to say that the thumbnail looks like a picture of Kaneda's bike from Akira.

[–]RussianRushNRobot 1 point2 points ago

Exactly what I was going to say!

[–]dinoignacio 1 point2 points ago

Glad I wasn't the only one who saw it that way.

[–]Kentang93 0 points1 point ago

Ahhhhh! The cuteness, it burns!!!

[–]FlicksMan 0 points1 point ago

So. Freaking. Adorable.

[–]pbnutbutter 1 point2 points ago

Those are red squirrels, and therefore, I will assume you are not of my continent.

[–]poktanju 1 point2 points ago

Meet your new fabulous pet squirrely!

[–]grimeygimley 0 points1 point ago

[–]finest_jellybean 0 points1 point ago

Just browsing through, saw this picture, and my mouth literally dropped open in the aww position.

[–]jacstroop 0 points1 point ago

Hm, too young to eat yet.

[–]Phooto 0 points1 point ago

I want to think this is cute and go "aww", but them I remember that these little shit heads scrape holes into my attic and make a fucking mess, chew on the wires and shit in my attic. They also fucking hiss/screech at me when I walk into my backyard.

Assholes.

[–]BobbleBobbleBobble 0 points1 point ago

[–]trekbette 0 points1 point ago

All sleeping babies are cute. All of them!

[–]realgenius13 0 points1 point ago

I'm afraid of squirrels but goddamn those are adorable.

[–]mark331 0 points1 point ago

Question: Can squirrels be domesticated, or is domestication a process that takes several hundred years?

[–]Squirrelson 1 point2 points ago

The one on the right is my cousin George, nice guy.

[–]lifebytheweek 0 points1 point ago

Is it bad if I thought they were dead at first?

[–]chilicatcasserole 0 points1 point ago

:D

<3

[–]Squirrel_Nuts 1 point2 points ago

:3

[–]mrkibblesthedog 0 points1 point ago

At first glance I thought the picture was of a big pile of shit

[–]always-right 0 points1 point ago

i was almost really jealous because i thought they were yours. it's too bad they just grow up to be such goddam pigs. no respect for the sanctity of birdfeeders.

[–]Shexerz 0 points1 point ago

[–]kadoi -1 points0 points ago

[–]KaylaThePope 0 points1 point ago

[–]FallingSky1 0 points1 point ago

For some reason I thought of Evee and all his/her evolved forms from pokemon.

[–]InternetPersona 0 points1 point ago

How adorable! Look at the itty bitty paws _^

[–]jrrowe 0 points1 point ago*

Where are these squirrels from? The ones where I live are grey, fat little fuckers.

[–]PenguinFiesta 0 points1 point ago

My jaw literally dropped when I clicked on this. _^

[–]PaladinZ06 0 points1 point ago

Quick! Kill the tree rats while they are still larval!

Little fuckers keep trying to invade my house.

[–]HyzerFlip 0 points1 point ago

I thought the title said Squirtles sleeping. I am disappoint.

[–]rabblerabbler 0 points1 point ago

I just had an awwgasm.

[–]untrustableskeptic 0 points1 point ago

[–]ABKTech 0 points1 point ago

Holy sweet baby fucking Jesus that's the cutest damn thing I have ever seen in all my years of living.

[–]KingOfRibbles 0 points1 point ago

But they'll grow up to be asshole squirrels, so screw them .

[–]Drewu271 0 points1 point ago

The thumbnail looks like a nasty shit...

[–]pooponascoop 0 points1 point ago

Quick, throw a pokeball before they wake up!

[–]APOPTO5I5 0 points1 point ago

Definitely read this as "Baby Squirtles Sleeping." Still cute though.

[–]koadan91 0 points1 point ago

Misread this as "Baby Squirtles Sleeping." I was disappoint.

[–]luigisfuckingpeach 0 points1 point ago

So adorable.

[–]pdxbone 0 points1 point ago

That's so cute, I just vomited.

[–]jimbojamesiv 0 points1 point ago

It's very interesting that they're all touching one another.

If I had to bet, I'd say it's more to do with than just warmth, and it's common among all mass-born babies?

[–]gattack 0 points1 point ago

Thank you. This just may out-cute the rest of internet cuteness.

[–]Calimhero 0 points1 point ago

Aww factor 10000000000000

[–]atomicox 0 points1 point ago

"Squirrels are just rats with cuter outfits".

[–]ittehbittehladeh 0 points1 point ago

My cat dragged in a baby squirrel once... We were fostering a new litter of kittens at the time and the mother cat allowed the squirrel to nurse and sleep with the kittens. It was ridiculous and awesome. Eventually we have the squirrel to a squirrel person.

[–]JapanNow 0 points1 point ago

Aww, very very cute. Thank you!

[–]Obsidius27 0 points1 point ago

Read this as baby squirtles sleeping. This is a bittersweet feeling.

[–]nmhai3 0 points1 point ago

i love chipmunks!

[–]PenguinBob 0 points1 point ago

We must slaughter them before they turn into the malevolent, scheming beasts they will become.

[–]ExoStab 0 points1 point ago

Arent they called kittens? Not hating....just curious.

[–]Uberninjaa 0 points1 point ago

Anyone else think this was some kind of meat on a plate when they looked at the thumbnail?

[–]cbybee310 -1 points0 points ago

Hide them quickly before the Republicans catch wind that they're still alive. They hate preciousness.

[–]delebird -2 points-1 points ago

anyone else thought this said "baby squirtles sleeping"?

[–]korin125 -1 points0 points ago

Yep, then I realized I wasn't in /Pokemon anymore. :(

[–]iamatoad -2 points-1 points ago

Ribbit.

[–]rebmemerem -2 points-1 points ago

My dog would love to have those in the house.. he would "EAT ALL THE SQUIRRELS!

[–]xmagneticx -2 points-1 points ago
