How about UNA (it means "one") - since she prefers to be the only cat in her houseold?

Another suggestion is HANNAH SOLO (sort of a female version of "Hans Solo",again playing on the notion that she prefers to be the "solo" cat in her family).

Both of these names could help demonstrate to prospective adopters who see her name that she does need to be in a one-cat home.

(She sure is a cutie. We already have several kitties, though.)

for the dog (Sugar is already a good name) GINGER is really the only thing I can think of for her - isnt it a pity that nice dogs are always the last to get homes - hope this helps. I used to work at an SPCA in Canada, one of my main things was to give the pets good names.

kn0thing [S] 12 points13 points 1 year ago[-]

By having this contest for the next week, we're hoping to draw attention to the SF SPCA and these two pets in particular. There's a chance someone here on the Interwebs could become the new owner.

Worst case, these two animals will end up with very creative names. I think a lot of folks would look twice at a goldfish named "Mister Splashy Pants." There aren't many goldfish at the SPCA, though.

kathaclysm 10 points11 points 1 year ago[-]

I think it'd also be nice to remind people that if you aren't anywhere near SF, but either of these two cuties tugs at your heart strings, there are many, many animals in need of a forever home, waiting in shelters across the U.S., across the world even.

qgyh2 6 points7 points 1 year ago[-]

indeed. In summary - never buy pets, always adopt.

One thing I can say, from having many cats and dogs - breed, pedigree are all insignificant. even the simplest common dog can be as awesome as the fanciest one. So please (if you can) always adopt pets from shelters

kathaclysm 3 points4 points 1 year ago* [-]

I can't take the stance that breed or pedigree are insignificant, especially with dogs.

People should do a lot of research into the type of breed of dog they are getting. Terriers and Great Danes are completely different balls of wax, with different temperamental and physical issues to be aware of.

So while mutts are often wonderful, they can carry traits from their pure-bred parents. With this in mind, I can understand if someone wants a pure-bred dog in order to avoid the complications of certain breeds (you might not want a herding dog in an apartment, or a sledding dog in southern florida, or a dog that will aggravate your allergies, or a dog that will get very large if you have small children). So many dogs are sent to shelters because people didn't do their homework on the breed they were bringing home.

Second: pedigree is important in pure-bred dogs. Good breeders avoid breeding dogs with medical problems and bad temperaments. The things that make for good show dogs also make for good and healthy pets. People who don't know what they're doing shouldn't be breeding dogs. (Side story: my sister bought a shitzu puppy for her son from a friend of a friend who just happened to have two dogs she let have sex. Out of a litter of 5, 2 died at birth, and the little bundle of fuzz she brought home suddenly started coughing up blood at 4 months old, and later died of a heart defect. My sister and nephew were heart broken.) Good breeders have their puppies checked for medical issues before they are sent to their forever-homes, and require that their dogs be returned to them if the dog becomes unwanted; not to a shelter.

So yes; adopt when you can, if you can. But definitely do research on the breed you are bringing home. And always have your pets fixed!

qgyh2 1 point2 points 1 year ago[-]

that's a very insightful answer.. you are right

kathaclysm 2 points3 points 1 year ago[-]

Thanks, it's something I've put some thought into. That and I watch too much Animal planet. Watching Cesar Millan and that crazy British lady, and then Animal Cops, it's just so sad how so many people don't put any thought into their pets.

kn0thing [S] 3 points4 points 1 year ago[-]

I totally agree. And lemme highlight a closing remark I made in the entry. If you've got an SPCA in your hometown that you'd like to see featured on TheCuteList, message Erik.

Mr. Barky pants.

We already have two cats and live in a small apartment, but Sugar is beautiful. I've wanted to own a dog (and a gun...) for a while now; stupid transient living.
